  • Pennsylvania has a case as the best state for roller coasters. You have a little of everything. You have multiple hyper coasters such as Skyrush and Phantom's Revenge. You have some thrilling launch coasters like Storm Runner and Sky Rocket. You have the deepest collection of wood coasters with rides like Phoenix, Ravine Flyer II, and Lightning Racer. And then you have the weird with things like Steel Curtain. So in this video, I rank the top 35 coasters in the Keystone State.

    Pennsylvania is a wonderful state for anything with "rails" I also enjoy the scenic steam train rides & museums there. Many of them near or going to those wonderful parks. Kingdom coasters paint scheme threw me at 1st. Once my eyes adjusted I was "enchanted!" I almost like it better than Blue Streak. Great color choices for a wooden coaster. Candymonium also has a delicious paint job (pun intended)

      You have to rank this coaster based on its age and design of the time it was built. I have ridden it several times and find it exciting for its age and riding in a single car with no major restraints. You can feel some air time even though the drops are as advertised more as dips than hills.

    Great list my man! Kennywood was my very first park ever as a kid so it's definitely cool to relive the coasters of my youth. I think the smell of oil for the track is stronger at Kennywood than at any other park, but that's probably my big nose.
    Did you ever get to try Potato Patch? I know you are a fish and chips guy and those fries are out of this world. There's also a really good cafe there that has some nice hearty meals with a menu that switches daily.
    I personally feel that the Racer is the most photogenic coaster in America. There's something about the red wooden track, the retro lighting that makes me feel like I'm on the set of Boardwalk Empire, and seeing how the entrance to the coaster is next to some games non-nonchalantly makes it really charismatic.
    Thunderbolt & P's Revenge are 2 of my personal favorite coasters of all time, which is pretty awesome because right next door, is Noah's Ark and The Turtle, two of my favorite flats (along with the Whip and Kangaroo)

    One fun thing about the Pennsylvania coaster collection is that they have my favorite kiddie coaster which is Kozmo's Kurves. While "best kiddie coaster" isn't necessarily anyone's highest priority, that thing is just wild. I don't think it's a good starter coaster for little ones. It has ejector airtime in the back seat and it feels out of control.

    Thanks for your count down of Pa roller coasters. I made it a point to visit all the parks except the one with the wacky taxi. We have some of the best coasters in the United Sates. I have ridden many other coasters outside Pa but still rank our collection as some of the best. I prefer wooden coasters so for me the best coaster is the Phoenix coaster at Kenobles. As mentioned in the video you can’t beat the air time you get especially those last small hills on the way back to the station. This park is also highly ranked due to free parking and your choice of either paying by the ride with tickets or on most days an all day ride pass. I recommend viewers visit any of our parks and see how good they are. Many are close enough you could do more than one in a day.

      I have been to all these parks and will really miss Conneaut parks Blue Streak. It was old and defiantly needed more updating before the new owner took it down. But it is again another great coaster that was lost due to where it was located and the greed of the new owner not wanting to invest and try to make the park work for the area. So much has been lost at this park it most likely will be permanently shut down.

      ROcky Glen's Million DOllar COaster didn't even cost a million bucks, it was $250k in 1940's dollars. The only reason the ride closed is that the lift hill diag supports where put into the lake and as the lake froze in the winter it compromises the structure, after just 11 years it had to be torn down. As they were dismantling it the good lumber was used to build the comet, which was also named Ghost Town Jet, Mighty Lightning and one other name escaping me. That coaster built and opened in 1959 was designed by JOhn Allen using bluePrints from Schmecks adult Junior comet layouts, adjusted for terrain. The coaster opened with 2 PTC buzz Bar Trains, which were not maintained and were junked for a used single 3 car grab ring train which stayed with it until it was burned down and razed in 1994.
      There is video footage of the 1988 auction and Dick Knoebels was seated in the front seat of the ride, he didn't buy it because it needed a lot of work. Stricker's grove bid $3000 for it and got it, but took too much time to get it down and moved and by that time the aeroplane tower collapsed onto the 2nd turnaround and then the local scum of the area tried to burn it down every single year until they finally got lucky burning the right half of the ride. AFter the last fire it was razed 5 days later. A BUlldozer hooked on to what was left of the lift chain and pulled it down. The remains are buried in the same area it stood and if you walk the park you can see portions of the steel road rails and some of the stack sticking out of the ground.
      Stricker's luckily still had the blue prints and built their replica (Mirrored) and it still operates today. for a 55ft drop and less than 2100 ft of track, it packs a wallop, some call it a junior phoenix.

    Someday when I have the time to go on a solo trip dedicated to roller coasters (if I haven't gotten too physically decrepit to ride them), I have this dream of just doing a tour of Pennsylvania. Only it'd almost make more sense to break it into Eastern PA and Western PA trips. And then the eastern trip could incorporate SFGA and the Jersey shore and the western one could extend into Ohio. And and and...
    (The less-ambitious version would just be a Knoebels-Dorney Park-Hersheypark three-fer, which seems much easier to do. The western version would be mainly Kennywood and Waldameer.)
    Hersheypark was a regular visit and my favorite theme park when I was a coaster-phobic kid, but between one thing and another, the only coasters I've ridden there (and in PA in general) are Fahrenheit, sooperdooperLooper and Trailblazer. It's enough of a taste that I want to ride the rest.

    I rode Skyrush this year for the first time, and even though I had no issues with the restraints, I honestly found it very underwhelming. The first drop gave a pop of airtime on the kink, and the three hills have good semi sustained ejector, but half the ride felt like filler. I honestly prefer Stormrunner, which I think is extremely underrated.

    My only suggestion would be that Comet at Hersheypark should have been maybe closer to the top than it was rated. This is a 75 year old coaster that has a good first drop and fun bunny hops on the return that you can hear the top wheels of the train leave the track.
    I'm assuming that trailblazer and sidewinder both at Hersheypark were just outside the list.
    Trailblazer was the first coaster I went on as a kid and the first "real" coaster I took my daughter on. It is a very smooth ride with a good hillside corkscrew at the end.

    I've been on some defunct coasters from zyklon( it changed names several times during its lifetime- ended up last in Florida and hurt some people but could of been worse- at del Frisco it may have caused chills and excitement but no one got hurt on it during the time there...tho I can't say much about other parks it was in..del grosso knew how to keep upkeep besides pa has stricter restrictions in safety then other states) del grosso(blands park at the time) the coaster was razed last year in 2022, and high speed thrill coaster, jet star (whirlwind is still in use today but under different name) and this one at dorney a wet log gloom type ride called journey to the center of the earth, so I liked coasters a lot.
    Tho you had phoenix at 3 I'd say I would put it at two flipflopping your 2 to 3 well that would be mine feeling.
    Anyways the black diamond(golden nugget at Morey's pier in new jersey) the Knoebels built indoors coaster(New Jersey it was a outdoor coaster) showing the area where miners and the on fire town of Centralia well underground I've been there several times is up there if rank this one way above the flying turns I really don't like it , I've only been on it 3 times since it was built , I don't like the one area on it so avoid it like the plague , the twister at Knoebels would drop to around 25 cause if the area before the tunnel that throws a twist which caused my back to hurt and how heavy rickety around those turns it has, the one coaster in Knoebels that I dislike and if I had a list would be last on any coaster list is the Cosmo Curve which is a purple tragedy(oops) I say it may be for children the meter if many people liking it is low(this replaced the better coaster called high speed thrill coaster)
    I liked this video it was fun watching all these coasters
    The blue streak should been called mean streak or something wicked this there came for that one was a torture rack of hurt getting on it,
    I went at the park while the 13 floors of fear, and got on the blue streak and wow going thru pitch black night time through the valleys of death oops meant fear it was one wicked rude of pain to me and it was a great yearning not to go it again and I didn't.
    To bad the tide was tore down I would of thunk it could've been fixed yet the cost would of been outrageous for the park that barely is striving today.

      Yes, the Blue Streak was a rough ride but due to its age and lack of major repairs it still was a great coaster to ride. I loved the fact that you went through 3 big hills before the turn back to the station. It is a shame the new owner of the park choose not to upgrade it rather than tare it down. However due to his continuing removing old rides I don’t think he has any intention of keeping the park running. This park is also not close to any major city so it would be hard to get enough people to come and keep the park in good condition. At least I got to ride it several times and have to add it to my list of dead coasters I have ridden in the past.

    We definately have very different lists. I would put Skyliner in my top 10 in PA, being that the violent airtime it has really appeals to me. It reminds me of Phoenix to some degree. Yea it has some rough spots but the ride quality is so good that I don't care about the roughness. I also would rank Candymonium very low, with how loaded the state is perhaps outside the top 20 even. I see its airtime as very weak in comparison to other B&M hyper/giga coasters. I agree with the top 2 but I'd probably flip them (I'll admit both coaster con bias with Skyrush and that ride playing a big part in my enthusiast arc due to riding it its opening year and feeling it was too much for little 11 year old me so it was actually something to conquer on revisits), so I have a soft spot for it).

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  Před rokem +1

      I can see the rationale for putting Skyliner up there. My rides just weren't strong enough start to finish to go that high

    • @Whatchamawhozit
      @Whatchamawhozit Před 9 měsíci

      Skyliner is nowhere near what it used to be. PLus it operates with PTC Junior trains instead of the stad PTC coaster Train. I was lucky enough to ride it when it stood at ROseland in Rochester, NY. By the time Roseland closed the coaster was in such bad shape. WHen it was moved to Altoona, the park reached out to Dick Knoebels to give them insight on the logistics and the cost involved with the move.
      Knoebels pulled phoenix from Texas, which is quite a distance... Rochester, NY is much close so the cost wasn't as intense as Phoenix. 900k for SKyliner versus 1.3 million for phoenix
      Funny though when Knoebels built Twister it cost $3,000,000 USD and that was added 14 years later. Had knoebels built a ground up new version of Phoenix back in 1985, it would have cost them 700k more than doing the relocate, but they had the benefit of getting one of the Herbert Schmeck Comet Triplets.
      Skyliner is doomed, as the current owners of lake mont do not have the money to do a restoration and the coaster is getting very rough and showing signs it may need to be shut down. They cannot afford a re-tracking and it needs new trains which is another cost they cannot take on as PTC won't build the original Juniors anymore and the newer juniors are too heavy for the current support structure.. A retracking plus new trains would cost as much as it would to build a new Gravity Group basic out and back ($3.7 million).
      However, should lakemont close, I know from working at Knoebels, that DIck Knoebel was offered the ride if it was ever to be torn down/closed. I don't know if they would take it today, or where they could put it, but it is his to take as long as they bare the cost of relocation.
      I am hoping it makes it to 2024 so I can get another ride on it when I make my cross state trek to Kennywood with my kid to introduce him to Phantom Revenger and Thunderbolt.

    • @urbex_coasters
      @urbex_coasters Před 9 měsíci

      @@Whatchamawhozit No way Skyliner runs juniors. Its trains are a lot bigger than Sea Dragon or Waldemeer's Comet (which I know are juniors). And from what I understand it isn't in bad shape, it just is at the point where it would need a repaint for the aesthetic. The park would rather spend that money on other things. Something will ultimately need to be done about it in the future (repaint or chemically treat the wood) but as of now it is not in bad shape. And when I rode it this past year I could tell trackwork had been done in the first valley. Also, from what I understand, the Curve/Pirates have invested money in the ride over the years since it is used as an element of their games. I know they've gotta have spare paint lying around somewhere, would be nice if they'd use it for Skyliner.

But if you want to do it you could most likely break it up by visiting the western Pa parks and then the ones more in the middle of the state and finally an eastern trip to finish visiting them all. I don’t think you will be disappointed in both the variety and relatively low cost compared to going to Disney or Universal type of parks. As for days, I’d say Hershey, Dorney, and Knoebels can be done in three straight days - they can easily be done using the same lodging as a base even. Then it’s a long drive across the state, so maybe that drive could be combined with a half-day at Waldameer, which is a very small park. And then a full day at Kennywood. So that’s five days in total (not including travel days to and from PA).

      @@CanobieCoaster Hopefully the park can get enough help to run it fulltime in 2023. I believe it takes a crew of seven or nine to run it
