Pretty straight forward process. That there have been over 1.5k views at the time I saw this video that indicates there are a lot of home mechanics who broke or stripped a screw in their stem through their own stupidity. I won't say why I watched this video. Thanks again.
Why did you?
@@JulianHutchings Because I'm stupid :-). The smart thing I've done is becoming a subscriber to your channel.
I would like to know how the stem tube screw broke if I used a torque wrench set at 6 nM and the spec is 7.5 nM.
Simon did a very good job on that, I always have trouble with the drill bit first step where your drilling with the small bit. That was a great tool with the tree steps. I have a zip stem that seems to want to round out and of course I have been removing this stem often due to bike part changes… You did a good job hard to drill without a punch. I have been trying to determine the correct bolt you use in a bh90 grx810 lever for hydraulic brakes.
Two things.
It's not a vice to have soft jaws in your vise, get or make some.
Where Loctite® is a factor, use a heat gun to soften it: 150°F (66°C) to 200°F (93°C), same for many adhesives like labels, old tape and such.
A heat stripper or propane torch will do it on non flammable areas. Usually you can loctite if you really don't want it to slip or come loose. Aero bar pads are an item you really don't want to slip if you're a big guy!
Often the screw strips the forged threads before breaking. I stripped an aluminum thread on an aero bar which was in a less obvious spot. By getting a long M-5 hex bolt and rounding the hex on a grinder I tightened it past and into threads that were intact. 4 nuts were placed on the protruding overly long bolts. By jam nutting the top 2 with red loctite and turning the second one anti clockwise I tightened the hell out of it. The 3rd and 4th nut were tighten with a spanner, loctited after tightening the hell out of it and jam nutted. Length of the bolt and top nuts cut down with a hacksaw. Additionally I had coated the contact points with red loctite. It hasn't moved since! Could do the same on the other side if it ever slips. I could have clearance drilled the works, but felt the remaining threads would have been enough. Belt and suspenders!
I didn't understand a word of that.
@@JulianHutchings I through bolted damaged threads with extreme prejudice!
Wil this method work with a ti bolt?
Only one way to find out!
As an American I can guarantee we say VIGHYHZE, and not vice. We make sure to follow the laws regarding this.
absolutely found the vid knowledgeable and helpful tho. thank you.
Hmmmm... (rubbing chin... strumming fingers on desk...) are you sure that it is a subscriber who had this unfortunate stem related accident Julian, and not perhaps, your good self? You can tell me, I won't tell a soul, honest.
Simon made it look easy though didn't he - obviously a handy chap to know!
You may think that, Mick: I couldn't possibly comment.
It did resemble a blue Secant which a well known vlogger owns!
@@JulianHutchings He He ;-)
@@davidburgess741 It did look suspiciously familiar didn't it!
I think the honourable gentleman should come clean - confession is good for the soul and all that!
@@micks61 Making mistakes is when we learn the most. It's character building, but not sure which one!
There are no ‘she’s unfortunately and Simon should compete with his own YT channel called Simon Says… just a thought
However…he will have to say something..
@@MK-rn2hm He's not allowed.
@@JulianHutchings 😂
Handy tool, thanks for sharingJulian. The poor stem at 5.02 seems to be pulling a face like it’s having a tooth out. 😬🫤
