Glad to come across a finance guy like myself. I'm also considering a MacBook but have some reservations regarding key apps not working as well. So is Parallels a perfect solution to running Windows on Mac and are there any drawbacks to not running Windows natively? I'll be using Excel, PowerBI, Dynamics, SAP and the likes. Also do Windows apps on Parallels lack functionality, for example Alt shortcuts on Excel?

    • @LukeBarousse

I have a question, Alex: have you noticed any hit on the battery performance when you run parallels? As Windows 11 (or 10 for what matters) runs on a x86-64 architecture and parallels does that translation as far as I know. I believe that would be possible. However, it would be good to know from someone that had this experience.

A good alternative is running Windows on a separate machine using a hypervisor. I chose that route because I had some 24/7 workloads I wanted to run. A great internet connection is a prerequisite but that’s not too hard to come by in an urban setting.

    • @kerrydaniels8460
      @kerrydaniels8460 Před 11 měsíci +2

Parallels is what we in ghe business call a type 2 hypervisor. In fact, to run a VM you cannot without a hypervisor involved. I too run hypervisors. I prefer Vsphere products, but there are indeed multiple options. The benefit of a type 1 hypervisor is also awesome which sounds like they may be what you could be doing. The downside with the setup is that you don't have access as easily on the go. Happy computing!

I loved my 2012 MacBook Pro with Bootcamp. I still use it! What is holding me back from upgrading is the lack of nested virtualization (and bootcamp to some extent). Asahi Linux announced nested virtualization on M2's so there is hope that Apple will release it in their virtualization kit. As for Bootcamp type of functionality, I'm assuming that's in MIcrosoft's court.

The "MacHUB" killed me! 🤣 I use Parallels 19 on a Mac Studio and it runs really well and seamlessly. I prefer to run it in non-coherence mode because I like to keep OS interaction completely separate, it is just a preference. One huge caveat with Parallels 19 that perhaps you mention in another of your videos is that for version 19, it now ONLY installs Windows "Pro", unlike earlier versions where you can install the cheaper "Home" version. I bought an "OEM" version of Windows 11 Pro for $80 instead of paying the full $200 license since I do not intend to use it in any other machine. Anyhow, great information!

Parallels and hardware Rosetta translation is very impressive, the only unsolvable issue I found was that certain software I used that uses Intel NEON instructions didn't work (scientific visualisation stuff, mainly)
Also the platform is reported as "ARM64" so certain developer tools will think that they need to build for ARM, when in fact they are running on what appears to them to be a native x64 machine. That can cause issues with some dev toolchains in my experience, not unsolvable but difficult to resolve.
But for standard consumer programs it works extremely well.

  • @rafaeldomenikos5978

Question about parallelization. I am mostly a Mac user and 80% of my work is coding, maths and writing papers, my Mac is good for that (I got a 14” MacBook Pro base model, so 16gb ram 512 ssd). But there is a part of my work where I have to run CFD simulations in ANSYS and Solidworks. These take weeks to run so I offload them to my work pc that’s a beast (desktop worth more than 10k), but I need to have a way to run smaller simulations in my own pc prior to offloading the full ones. For this reason I have been using a windows laptop, but it’s becoming cumbersome as it is heavy and I don’t want to carry two laptops.
I am thinking of upgrading my Mac to an M2 Max 64 GB one and run parallels to install ANSYS there (it is not available for Mac), and allocate 8 cores and 32-48GB to the VM (leaving basically something like a MacBook Air equivalent performance for the base which is more than enough most of the times. I am not gonna run AI training and ANSYS at the same time 😂).
Do you think that allocating so many resources in the VM is worth it, or no matter how much I allocate it will still be very slow?
My current windows laptop is 32 GB i9-8950h, so similar specs to what I’ll allocate to the VM.
I really want to have one laptop instead of two but I am worried about how good it is going to be considering that it is going to be crazy expensive (the spec that I am thinking is like 4k).

It will probably be fine but you will have to try it out yourself first. Prob will have to buy, test and then return if unhappy because you have such a specific use case. Also, M3 max will be coming out in 2024 and be a 50% or more performance boost. It will have 12 performance cores (50% more than m2 pro and max) and will be 3nm. They are also increasing the base ram of all models.

i haven’t, but a console app is just a console app. There is no reason not to run it under the latest framework (unless you have x64 dependencies or accessing some old APIs). The latest framework runs really well

Video idea/request : Make a video with windows 11 development tests (not wsl) like java/android/npm/c++/C# big projects builds. Parallels with windows probably OK too. And compare speeds in windows with Windows Defender ON (default) and then fully OFF(turn off Realtime protection, Self Protection and everything else you find there). From my experience, results could be drastic sometimes. Especially in multicore/multiprocess scenarios.
Note that for quick tests its easier to turn Defender off temporarily in settings, because if you want to add full exclusions you need to add EVERY dev-related path as "folder exclusion" AND "process exclusions" or Defender will still scan it and slow it down.

So can anybody tell how smooth is the gaming experience on Mac? Also, some of the applications that I use require at least 16 GB of RAM and 8 GB of graphic card. Is it doable using a Mac? Or the configuration will be too expensive? Integrated graphics are not usually recommended and I do need a dedicated graphic card. So can any Mac user tell if a MacBook will be fine for such tasks. Also if I install a Windows then it would need more space. which means further upgrading the configuration, not to mention the size of outputs generated through work. Any suggestion? TIA 🙂
