As a CPA, I use Parallels to run my accounting software on my M1 MBA. Each version works better and I am looking forward to trying version 19.
What is the name of that accounting software?
@@gaurav1252 I used Quickbooks, Quicken, TValue, and Asset Keeper with Parallels. Quickbooks and Quicken have Mac versions but they don’t have the same features as the Windows versions. I also use Caseware IDEA but I have to use a Windows laptop because they don’t allow for virtualization due to licensing issues.
Just buy a window laptop
parallels is great but i got sick of the annual upgrade fee. i bought a refurbished LG laptop on ebay for $600 bucks to run windows on it and it's a lot less headache. plenty of great shape used windows laptops out there!
@@chriswright8074 I have one but ultimately I want to use the Mac most of the time.
Windows and Visual Studio for ARM were a well timed gift for us users with a macbook M1/M2. I can only hope that others will follow swiftly (for soft and hardware). :)
I was worried after the M1 debut that I’d have to get a PC to work on excel and powerbi. Ive been using the same VM as you since and super impressed with how fast it’s still been working on large datasets. 📊
Glad to come across a finance guy like myself. I'm also considering a MacBook but have some reservations regarding key apps not working as well. So is Parallels a perfect solution to running Windows on Mac and are there any drawbacks to not running Windows natively? I'll be using Excel, PowerBI, Dynamics, SAP and the likes. Also do Windows apps on Parallels lack functionality, for example Alt shortcuts on Excel?
@@emadahmed7145 yeah, it's not a perfect solution. If you are going to be working in Window apps all day, I recommend just getting a PC instead of a Mac. Shortcuts are a little bit more difficult to use.
For my use case of using Excel and Power BI using this only an hour or two a day, I think that it's worked out well for me minus the shortcut limitations
You can run excel native on a Mac.
I've been running Excel on a Mac natively for 30 years now, In fact Microsoft released Excel on Mac before they did on Windows back in 1987.
@@Applecompuser correct! it's just limited with things that I need to use for more advanced analysis like PowerQuery, VBA, and now their Python in Excel feature
I have a question, Alex: have you noticed any hit on the battery performance when you run parallels? As Windows 11 (or 10 for what matters) runs on a x86-64 architecture and parallels does that translation as far as I know. I believe that would be possible. However, it would be good to know from someone that had this experience.
A good alternative is running Windows on a separate machine using a hypervisor. I chose that route because I had some 24/7 workloads I wanted to run. A great internet connection is a prerequisite but that’s not too hard to come by in an urban setting.
Parallels is what we in ghe business call a type 2 hypervisor. In fact, to run a VM you cannot without a hypervisor involved. I too run hypervisors. I prefer Vsphere products, but there are indeed multiple options. The benefit of a type 1 hypervisor is also awesome which sounds like they may be what you could be doing. The downside with the setup is that you don't have access as easily on the go. Happy computing!
In my experience, parallel does not support GNS3 to integrate VMs, like VMware Workstation Pro does.
I hate that they switched to a subscription model years ago! A deal breaker for me!
Yeah for me too, just like Adobe with their ridiculous expensive Software
The standard version can be on the 1-Time Purchase, but then you won’t get all the updates. I don’t like the subscription service, but I have sucked it up.
Adobe’s is a different matter. You need a mortgage to afford the latest versions.
They have student discount; if that helps. It’s not hard to get a student email for a few bucks. I enrolled in $50 online video editing course and was able to get student verification from that as well.
I hate that too! But I'm pretty sure they hate I've switched to a cracked version.
Yes, I agree. A subscription model was what ,ade me go for a model which was a windows machine and an iPad as opposed to a Mac running parallels.
I loved my 2012 MacBook Pro with Bootcamp. I still use it! What is holding me back from upgrading is the lack of nested virtualization (and bootcamp to some extent). Asahi Linux announced nested virtualization on M2's so there is hope that Apple will release it in their virtualization kit. As for Bootcamp type of functionality, I'm assuming that's in MIcrosoft's court.
Like torturing your self
The "MacHUB" killed me! 🤣 I use Parallels 19 on a Mac Studio and it runs really well and seamlessly. I prefer to run it in non-coherence mode because I like to keep OS interaction completely separate, it is just a preference. One huge caveat with Parallels 19 that perhaps you mention in another of your videos is that for version 19, it now ONLY installs Windows "Pro", unlike earlier versions where you can install the cheaper "Home" version. I bought an "OEM" version of Windows 11 Pro for $80 instead of paying the full $200 license since I do not intend to use it in any other machine. Anyhow, great information!
Hello I didn't think you could run a purchased windows license on more than one machines?
First off I want to say I love your videos and the channel. Excellent stuff all around :)
I bought a fully spec’d out M3 iMac for the home and it’s been wonderful. I installed Parallels without a hitch and am running a few older games that work perfectly. Once question I have is what do you recommend I use to capture the gameplay from Parallels? I’ve seen a lot of videos talk about screen recording but I haven’t found any way to record the audio and video within a specific window within Parallels. Any advice would be super appreciated.
Great video hey i have a question do you have a video showing how to use parallel and windows on a external ssd drive with my mac book pro m2. i prefer not put it on my mac hard drive and just run it on a external drive to save space on the mac drive if possible Thanks for you Help
Parallels and hardware Rosetta translation is very impressive, the only unsolvable issue I found was that certain software I used that uses Intel NEON instructions didn't work (scientific visualisation stuff, mainly)
Also the platform is reported as "ARM64" so certain developer tools will think that they need to build for ARM, when in fact they are running on what appears to them to be a native x64 machine. That can cause issues with some dev toolchains in my experience, not unsolvable but difficult to resolve.
But for standard consumer programs it works extremely well.
I have bought Parallels 18 standard 3 months ago, now they realized version 19. Would be nice to make some tests between version 18 and 19 if it's worth upgrading... Because upgrade also costs pretty penny, so would be nice to know if it's worth it
from what I’m hearing, it’s a subscription either way you go, is that right?
@LEINEHMARK well that’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Is there still a one-time fee you can pay for parallels then? Or just the older version?
@@stateportSound_wav nope. I bought it as classic standalone version.
@@DamirGrbic what version can I buy like that on m1 mac, with no subscription?
I have Parallels 18. Do you think the performance is better than 18v?
I’ve been wanting to switch to Mac but I need Java Applet / NPAPI support to access some tools provided by the company where I’m working. So, will Windows on Parallel runs Java Applet / NPAPI?
One more question, Alex. I only want Parallels and Microsoft on my Mac so I can use Articulate Storyline, and nothing else. Could you recommend which Parallels would be enough for me. Thank you.
is it still a huge battery hog? on one of my machines u could see the battery drain
Hey, nice Video! I have one Question. What du you use for Settings for CPU and RAM? And What is your Setting in the area calls „Hypervisor“ did you Set parallels or Windows? I have a Mac 2019 with 8cpu and 64 gb ram. I have the Problem that the windows work Slow. I dont know why….
Hey, does your parallels work with Windows 11 x86 or is it ARM version?
So I’m thinking about buying parallels, but when I go to windows settings it says that I need to buy a windows license from the Microsoft store. The parallels program its already is telling me to buy from their website? Which do I buy? Do I have to buy both?
Thanks a lot for this video! I have been very hesitant and worried about switching to a macbook from my Windows laptop. Please keep making these videos to encourage transitioning to Macbooks without losing on performance from the various apps.
Thanks for the video! I have a M3 Pro 36GB. Need Parallels and Windows to run CadLink for DTF printing on an Epson 8550. Do you think I'm safe buying the One Time Purchase version of Parallels, or do I need the annual plan? (Does the annual plan deny use after expiration, or can I continue to use the old version until I must upgrade for some other reason)?
If I’m running Parallels 19 on a 2021 M1pro MacBook Pro 1TB 16core CPU 16gb ram.
What’s the ideal windows allocation?
Just want to be able to run windows and some non Mac software on the machine.
No coding or anything intensive.
Wanting to keep the Mac Host OS running as smooth as possible. But not wanting to slack out on the windows side either.
Hello Alex, Can I use Parallel on M1 Macbook Pro. 16GB Unified Memory and 1TB Storage is good enough to use or run Parallels ? Thank you
I installed the virtual machine and it ran very well, however my space is very small on MacOS and I decided to clean the Windows installation files, but the disk utility still shows the 64GB allocated for this task. How can I solve this and get my original HD space back?
With parallels 19 and macOS Sonoma will gaming be better on windows or just the same as parallels 18?
I personally haven't seen anything indicating improvements. VMWare fusion has a Tech Preview that supports DX11 so there's alternative hypervisor for gaming that's free but it looks like gaming improvements are being made through compatibility layers and wine using Apple's GPTk (a testing tool being used by the community to accomplish some DX12 gaming) and crossover.
Can you test trial versions of Memoq and Sdl trados studio on windows virtual machine on macbook air m1. I am translator and I consider buying it and need to test compatibilty.
I have questions I install parallel on my MacBook 14 in m2 when I plug in my iPhone 15 Pro Max my music itune show up iPhone for backup. When I switched to windows 11 my iPhone 15 doesn’t show up on windows iTunes for backup. Do you know what the problem?
In parallel desktop busy account app shows that the processor is not adequate for running this app. Please help me out for this situation i have m2 mackbook air 16gb ram. pls help me out.
Do you happen to know if there's still a way to run Windows apps in the MacOS environment, I feel like it used to run like this 10-15 years ago, wondering if there's a setting in Parallels or something, that would let it FEEL like I'm using a Mac app, instead of running it inside the Windows window. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. You mentioned about CAD programs on parallels 19. If a ith sufficient RAM around 64 GB on macOS, and then allocating 16GB, or more to parallels 19, do you think it can run software as such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, rendering programs, etc as seamlessly as a high spec windows laptop?
i don’t use those packages myself, but from parallels own docs on the 19 release, they apparently focused a lot of their energy to support these better.
Okay but the WOA version of Visual Studio 2022 still have limitations from what I know. For example, is QT fully supported? You can't compile a project from parallels as far as I know
Just wondering will the heavy software like solidwork run faster on VM
Question about parallelization. I am mostly a Mac user and 80% of my work is coding, maths and writing papers, my Mac is good for that (I got a 14” MacBook Pro base model, so 16gb ram 512 ssd). But there is a part of my work where I have to run CFD simulations in ANSYS and Solidworks. These take weeks to run so I offload them to my work pc that’s a beast (desktop worth more than 10k), but I need to have a way to run smaller simulations in my own pc prior to offloading the full ones. For this reason I have been using a windows laptop, but it’s becoming cumbersome as it is heavy and I don’t want to carry two laptops.
I am thinking of upgrading my Mac to an M2 Max 64 GB one and run parallels to install ANSYS there (it is not available for Mac), and allocate 8 cores and 32-48GB to the VM (leaving basically something like a MacBook Air equivalent performance for the base which is more than enough most of the times. I am not gonna run AI training and ANSYS at the same time 😂).
Do you think that allocating so many resources in the VM is worth it, or no matter how much I allocate it will still be very slow?
My current windows laptop is 32 GB i9-8950h, so similar specs to what I’ll allocate to the VM.
I really want to have one laptop instead of two but I am worried about how good it is going to be considering that it is going to be crazy expensive (the spec that I am thinking is like 4k).
It will probably be fine but you will have to try it out yourself first. Prob will have to buy, test and then return if unhappy because you have such a specific use case. Also, M3 max will be coming out in 2024 and be a 50% or more performance boost. It will have 12 performance cores (50% more than m2 pro and max) and will be 3nm. They are also increasing the base ram of all models.
@AZisk have you run into issues where windows software is only compiled for intel and won't run or runs so slowly it is unusable? That is what I was hearing when Parallels first came out... Have we gotten to the point where that is no longer an issue via Parallels or Windows ARM translation of intel software?
anything that still has x86 dependencies will still suffer the windows translation layer. however, if you’re on linux, then Parallels 19 now supports x86 translation via Rosetta, which is way better. might do a vid on this soon
@@AZisk That would be great to see what your experience has been (benchmarks?) and what you have found still even needs the translation.
5:35 QEMU is completely free and allows you to run x86 Windows on ARM devices like the macbook. It might be harder to setup.

it is really slooooow
Can I use Parallels on a MacBook Air with the same effectiveness and efficiency?
Can you please compare parallels 19 to VMware fusion (it's free) for excel/vba/visual studio
Probably parallels is faster but how much is the question, if it's only marginal then we can consider VMware fusion
I am someone that has used VM's for may years. This iteration of windows deployments on a type 2 hypervisors is one of the best I've ever seen on a type 2. Hell, in generally really. I normally wouldn't even pay with there typical being free means of runnig VM's, but on a mac, this was done VERY well that even complete newbies would hwve zero issues wifh ninimal effort.
I hand it to you parallels.

do anyone use parallels for solidworks, because im a student and, I need it to train for exams. So can anyone tell me if it works good or should i buy a windows pc?
Questions:
- I got the new 48gb M3 MAX. If I got parallels installed but not using it, I guess no RAM is allocated to Windows until I start it?
Meaning. If Windows is shut down, I have the full power of the Mac for things like video editing and so?
Is there also a possibility to use it with freeware like UTM or VMWARE Fusion?
For security issues (pentest mode), its better to isolate the VM? With the isolate mode, we cant copy and paste into the VM.
security and usability are always at war :)
But is there a Hypervisor available in the virtualized Windows 11?
I saw with this update, they implemented allowing Linux VM's to use Rosetta 2. I'm very curious how that is now and plan on giving it a try here in the future. (unless the new Fedora Asahi Remix release takes care of everything I could ask for)
yes, this looks promising

Hi Alex! Have you tried running a .Net Framework 4.0 console app on windows with parallels on an M1/M2?
i haven’t, but a console app is just a console app. There is no reason not to run it under the latest framework (unless you have x64 dependencies or accessing some old APIs). The latest framework runs really well
Hi Alex, hope this message finds you well, I’m looking for a recommendation for wireless headsets that you reviewed a while ago and you interlaced it within your video. I've been using Parallels since version 8. I love it so much.
do you recommend if i buy the one time purchase or subscription?
is it good for playing?
Video idea/request : Make a video with windows 11 development tests (not wsl) like java/android/npm/c++/C# big projects builds. Parallels with windows probably OK too. And compare speeds in windows with Windows Defender ON (default) and then fully OFF(turn off Realtime protection, Self Protection and everything else you find there). From my experience, results could be drastic sometimes. Especially in multicore/multiprocess scenarios.
Note that for quick tests its easier to turn Defender off temporarily in settings, because if you want to add full exclusions you need to add EVERY dev-related path as "folder exclusion" AND "process exclusions" or Defender will still scan it and slow it down.
how I wish I could run SQL Server in Parallels... this and the data tools are the only things holding it back.
Great video!
Unfortunately not all visual studio project types can run under visual studio arm64
SSDT is unsupported 😢
This is also my concern. VS for arm and for Mac isn’t the same fully as it is on PC’s
Hi Alex. Excellent videos!!! I owned a M2 MacBook pro with 10 cores and 32 gigs which I use tu run scientific computing using julia. I need to do some small hydraulic simulations on EPANET that runs only on windows. I try to find on their web site if EPANET will work on parallels with arm architecture but couldn't find an answer. Would you help me? Thanks a lot
Since we have an ARM Windows 11, I ask myself why Apple doesn't make it possible to install thru BootCamp as we usually did in Intel Macs?
It's on windows not apple to do that.
Agree except in my case as a heavy excel user here - tried again with a mbp for the last month, excel for mac is missing features and parallels windows excel is fine but keyboard shortcuts conflict with native mac ones, had to switch back the work machine to a windows laptop
This! If you use VMs or even RDP you can basically forget to use shortcuts as they are messed up by conflicting Mac os ones. Funny how no one seems to mention this

We LOVED this video, Alex! Great work and we are so glad you are enjoying Parallels Desktop!
What is the advantage of Parallels over VirtualBox besides performance? I find VirtualBox to be fast enough; is there some other reason I should use Prallels?
Games and anything 3D related should run a lot better
VMWare works pretty well and it’s free. Can you tell a really good difference for parallels? I use for gaming
I use Paralles since Version 2. I love it, too. Thank you for sharing this video.
How much have you paid for it since you began?? 🥴 Greedy crap
Does the parallel already include the Windows11 software or is this purchased separately?
Includes a non activated copy
I wanted to get the M1 for solely using IT related labs, windows Server system, EVE-NG etc. But M1 doesnt aupport well. (vmware workstation/fusion)
Being able to run more and more x86/x64 programs on W11 on an M1 with parallels is also pretty great. Been on the beta with W11 arm for a while and it has improved a lot this year.
How about the older stuff like older .NET Framework apps? I deal with a fair chunk of legacy code in my consultancy work.
I just bought an older macbook pro with an i9 processor and was thinking of going back to windows pc I think you just saved the day. I can just put this parallels on my Mac as I like the mac for design work but I like windows for tabbing and having multiple browser windows running.
You could consider VMWare Fusion as an alternative to Parallels. The problems he refers to in the video relate to the Apple Silicon version of VMWare, the Intel version works great.
Sadly UTM can't even pass-through graphics as of now. So yea, very good summary including that Parallels has market dominance.
So can anybody tell how smooth is the gaming experience on Mac? Also, some of the applications that I use require at least 16 GB of RAM and 8 GB of graphic card. Is it doable using a Mac? Or the configuration will be too expensive? Integrated graphics are not usually recommended and I do need a dedicated graphic card. So can any Mac user tell if a MacBook will be fine for such tasks. Also if I install a Windows then it would need more space. which means further upgrading the configuration, not to mention the size of outputs generated through work. Any suggestion? TIA 🙂
If you want too game get a PC or console. Mac isn't for gaming really. Won't compare to windows there.
Bro, please make a video on --how to use any app in full screen , overlapping the notch bar (basically in macbook air m2 and upgraded line up models)
Hi alex can you make a video on how to
install ubuntu as a dual boot on the recent MacBook pro 14
My development how are an X1 Carbon maxed out and an M2 MacBook Air. I love them both but I find the MacBook to be quite heavy compared with the Thinkpad. I will say it is very fast. I just wish there was better support from MS for Windows in parallels. More of the other Windows dev tools on M2
I've had a question for a while. Is it theoretically possible to run x86_64 Windows on Apple silicone Macs?
yes, qemu
@@pyra3466 First time finding out about it.
Is it actually good or nah?
Great video as usual! Will it virtualize legacy Windows Server products like Win 2012r2 (intel) that some of us must still support unfortunately ?
No, unfortunately on Apple Silicon it is not possible to emulate x86 OS’es with Parallels or VMware (yet)
@@moow950 That's what I suspected. I still need my Intel MBP. ugh.
So why is VMWare Fusion not right there?
Then there's me, running wx-widgets in visual studio, photoshop, and studio one on a 4GB RAM, 8th gen core i3 laptop, good times. 😁
Is the visualized windows a x64 or arme arch?
Thanks for the video! Do you still think Parallels is better than Boot Camp?-never mind I just found out boot Camp doesn't work with M1 chips
This guy is legit, spilling good advice like gold!
Is SQL Server now working in windows on arm?
As far as I can tell, no. SQL Server 2014 x86 runs fine in Parallels Windows 11. 2016 and up are all x86_64 only, and won’t install. You can run x86_64 SQL Server 2019 and 2022 in a Docker container but that only gets you the database engine, no SSIS, etcetera.
Were you connected to the wall power for the Asus laptop?
yes, you HAVE to be.
