BADBADNOTGOOD: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bobby Carter | January 23, 2017 - BADBADNOTGOOD made a name for itself by reworking songs from the likes of Nas and Ol' Dirty Bastard, eventually catching the attention of Odd Future leader Tyler, the Creator. The masses took notice in 2015 when the group produced an entire LP for Ghostface Killah, Sour Soul. BADBADNOTGOOD has been called a hip-hop ensemble, but its foundation is clearly jazz, which provides a gateway to countless genres. On IV, the group allows that gateway to widen, adding soul and funk to the repertoire.
Still only in their 20s, the band's members never seemed intimidated by the intimate nature of the Tiny Desk; if anything, it accentuated their enthusiasm. This was their zone. They played three selections from IV - including "Cashmere," which only slightly veered from the studio version, and "In Your Eyes," which features Charlotte Day Wilson's vocals. The tight arrangement allowed Wilson to hover gently above the instrumentation, showing off the band's most promising work to date. It was a pleasure to have BADBADNOTGOOD at the desk for IV - and exciting to imagine what's in store for V, VI and beyond.
IV is available now:

Fun fact: these guys arranged "Get You" by Daniel Caesar. Bassline, drums, and all. They're on the recording.
Are you serious
@@paulchristensen6168 Yup.
thanks for sharing that! i had no clue
And 'After The Storm' with Bootsy Collins, Kali Uchis and Tyler, The Creator
DANGGGG *round of applause* they are invincible my guy
Charlotte Day Wilsons voice is so beautiful.
MCHawkJunior Charlie Day >>> Charlotte Day
Dayman has the best voice of all
I literally aspire to sound like her, but also like myself
sounds like jordan rakei a bit
Hell yeah! That’s how I heard about this band. I was listening to college radio and they played that very same song. Been hooked ever since.
This drummer is so freakin' delicate and precise I love it. The whole band is serving the song.
I know right, he doesn't do a lot but he doesn't need to. His touch on the snares and cymbals are so precise and full of color
Being a delicate and precise? I can't help but get tunnel-hearing.
@@tomyurkovicok, leave then.
@@star16me I apologize for how that probably read and my typo didn't help.
I meant that when I hear a drummer that plays with great dynamics and accuracy, I can't help but focus on their playing. Truly, I didn't mean any disrespect.
My daughter was playing a song upstairs and me being a bassist really liked the bassline. The song was Time Moves Slow. I decided to dig a little deeper into this band and this was not what I was expecting. Go hed youngsta's. You guys (and Lady) make beautiful music. Your bassist is outstanding! Glad my daughter put me up on ya'll. I hear LA by SiR in this too btw.
Yes that song is awsome!! You dtr has great taste in music
Good for your daughter :)
Same here
your daughter is the real MVP here.... lil sis got refined taste which is good to see
I thought they were a prison band. How each can they make that soulful sound mixed with pain.
i would say this was good good not bad
And 2 years after your comment brian i would say this is as good good as it gets!!!!
wow, thanks for an overused comment
Infectious Fungi cmon man this comment is 3 years old let me live
@@brianneagle7283 I have no life therefore you shouldn't either, now we shalt duelt to the death
brian neegle man I had to laugh cause at first when I read your comment, slight chuckle but I had heard that joke before . . .
I thought to myself he's going to get lambasted by some bored person for being unoriginal . . Then I notice that your comment is 3 years old and I'm like 'oh that's fine then. I may even be witnessing the progenitor of this joke'
And then I saw your recent exchange, laughed again, that's my story, thx for listening
they have such a good bassist. i wish they would raise his sound a small amount.
I like it as well. It's a very old school motown sound
Adam J Ready he's got great feel. does the muted groove thing really well.
My fav member of the band for sure. He's nasty
Listen "Weight off" from them, that bass yo!
I agree that their bassist is great but oh boy! that drummer is sick
Man, this live performance of "In Your Eyes" is even better than the studio version!
Agreed 😊
so far
Hm, wouldn't be the 1st time for great music ...
Its as good! But this is live which makes it even more impressive! Great vocals and dope track
When a group live performance is better their studio, you know they are badass
Who else was blown away the first time hearing this singer?
Definitely
We had that track at our wedding 💜
When she hits it I automaticly cry the first time I heard.
Incredible talent.
@@adamkowalczyk7429 I had a similar experience. Had no expectations, then I get butterflies/tingly and audibly "Wow" the instant she starts... I am mostly into instrumental stuff. Not many vocalists hit me like that.
This is Incredible. BADBADNOTGOOD has never made a bad song. I would Absolutely love to see Hiatus Kaiyote, Little Dragon & Kamasi Washington.
KAMASI WASHINGTON
K J yes lawd
Omg we have the same taste in music
yoooo you going to bbng, little dragon and flying lotus?
Yeah their songs are GOODGOODNOTBAD
props to the audio engineers... super crisp
no bass at all tho
@@iverson3858 I hear the bass just fine on my studio monitors.
@@burnstudios seriously comparing studio monitors with a gaming headset? lol
@@burnstudios im using dt770s and it sounds super full and punchy!
@@iverson3858 On a good pair of headphones or speakers the bass is good.
Returning here again and again. How can a group so young have such a mature, rich sound ?
They met at music schools and have been playing, arranging, and recording together for like 10-12 years
Jazz schools.
Level of musicianship is off the charts
There's no stronger drug than MUSIC.
Then you havent done DMT lol
@@bas_ee lol dmt is way on the other end of the spectrum.
badbadDOOM would be amazing
he's featured on one of the songs off SOUR SOUL
Luke Cherchenko That's where I got the idea.
They also did a remix of "Guv'nor" with him, which isn't even really a remix because it's got completely new DOOM verses. Its fucking amazing.
JJDoom Deluxe Edition, if I´m not mistaken.
it's on dangerdoom
good to know the boys from Malcolm in the middle are doing alright
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, you do have to be talented to mock of these guys
LOL
bahahahaaha
With McLovin on the keys
hahahahahahaha the krelboynes

I will never forget seeing these guys live playing with Arthur Verocai here in Brazil. It was mind blowing.
CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON!! what. a. voice.
Eli Pardue yessss
Voice wow speak special me cool Awesome skills beautiful music spoke word flow vibe soul neo
Honestly some parts reminded me a ton of Coltrane, love it
DTschoppy Agreed. That last tune gives me a Coltrane/McCoy Tyner vibe.
What? What parts?
The first tune made me think of Miles Davis.
@@kuhnhan ditto
Glad to see this oncoming generation, jazz needs this!
They have a chemistry and cohesiveness that is palpable.. and it’s what makes an amazing group/band.. they are in sync with each other
That second tune.... Wow! Such a soulful voice.
FINALLY.
invite hiatus kaiyote next, please? :D
would love to see that
THIS!
feisarino abitama YES
YESSSS!!!!!!
Y'know its crazy, at a tiny pub show I went to I saw the singer from Hiatus Kaiyote. I didn't even know they were from Melbourne (my city), lol. Turns out the singer that I went to see was friends with the singer from Hiatus Kaiyote.
I love this band's drummer sooooo much
I love seeing soprano saxophone used in such cool music. A lovely instrument!! And such a lovely jazzy use of intonation and pitch bending :) Love these guys
Mann all incredibly talented, especially that kid playing flute sax and guitar, wow
kills on the tambourine and cowbell as well
Lap clarinet!
Also*
If I'm not mistaken he also plays piano and drums too very talented guy.
Can't believe I have never heard of these guys. I haven't been this excited about a new band since I discovered Vulfpeck. Speaking of, when do they get a Tiny Desk?
I would highly recommend researching some of their earlier work if you're a fan! They got their start covering some of hip hop's more popular productions and incorporating their background in jazz.
Try Listening to "Get You" by Daniel Caesar. They Produced that track as well and alot more for that artist
They did a spectacular collaboration with Ghostface Killah from Wu Tang!! Project is called Sour Soul. Personal favourite off of that album is Gunshowers!!!
mjohnson510 these guys produced that song???? I love that song so much
Kevin A yep! And I think two other tracks of Daniel.
i gotta be honest. i did not expect Charlotte Day Wilson to look like that.
She does sound like she could be a big grown woman, not a young little blondie ;)
yeah, she's taller than I imagined.
Sim Stander yeah I’m almost upset lmao
yeah, those earrings..
@@animezae she probably sees these comments. that's not kind.
Spectacular performance and amazing timbre Charlotte !!
21 minute holiday in my heart. Beautiful.
ive been a fan of these guys since the original 3 were recording their sessions in Humber Collage practice rooms! Legendary Canadian group right here
I love you all bringing real music back, so talented, just so awesome....
I fell in love with music all over again now.
Well, built a house from this melody. I am living in it forever now.
What a nice visualization
That’s romantic
I love how the first song went off into a full blown Love Supreme style improv. These dudes are the real deal!
the piano on cashmere is just too fulfilling, too good
That bass tone sounds awesome!
What a good surprise to see them here!
This fill-in pianist for Matt is actually pretty badass. Brings a different color to their music.
But he doesn't shake his head enough
his beat is different but I like Matt's.
Lee Nuxunumo 😆
Lee Nuxunumo yeah red
not my Roderick
I have listened to in your eyes a million times. It’s my favourite and makes me cry everytime
My ears feel so blessed!
The stereo recording on that piano solo at 14:00... perfection
These renditions are pretty neat. I like how the new piano player is holding his own.
saw these guys at a jazz festival in portugal. absolute talent and they are so young, it was so great.. their music reaches so many genres and leland playing all that stuff really adds to their versatility
Every once in a while something truly awe inspiring comes along and I'm reminded of how awesome life can be even if the rest of your day is filled with madness in this confusing badbadnotgood world
Wow, they've been able to translate this album so well across many music platforms and now here on TIny Desk, and what feels like directly in my living room. The feeling their music evokes is purely magic.
Thanks for showing me another band to fall in love with, NPR.
Love It! I keep coming back and watching again and again.
It would be sick if they did their album with Ghostface Killah on here
I had to look up Charlotte Day Wilson cause gah damn.
they’re all so talented
Just saw their requests for offering in festivals and stuff, with all recyclable or compostable, and decided to check them up... Absolutely amazing!!!! Long live jazz
KEEPING JAZZ ALIVE!!!!! YESSS!!! I knew they'd be on here!!!
Tighter than a Vice, I'm hooked! TY 👌
love these guys, so glad they finally got their tiny desk spot
Always sparks deep inside. It's raining in San Francisco, and the world is beautiful with these guys in existence. How music has so much power in energizing the soul. Love love love.
what woman, what voice!!! I’m in love with this band, take my soul to another place
All these years, I've always imagined Charlotte Day Wilson being a black woman, such a powerful yet deep voice I never thought I'd hear from a white woman. So talented, touching and effortless for such an amazing chant. Amazing.
SAME!!! I just KNEW she was Black😲❤️
same 😂
Dem whiteys gettin bettah yah?!
*cough* a lil *cough* racist tho
@@drippinwet774 no it's not, black females tend to have deeper voices, it's just basic anatomy, i literally have a black person as my pfp, I'm black and don't hate anyone, you're just d*mb bro
I couldn't stop smiling while watching this. Truly amazing.
This literally brought me to tears - Charlotte's tone and the instrumentation of each member. I usually don't cry but everything felt so pure and gentle. Just magical.
PERFECT SOUND MISTER JOSH ! Every second of your sound engineering is just a big present for me. THANKS for all these Tiny desk concerts.
are you kidding me? Cashmere brought a whole wave of euphoria over me. that was crazy
Something Seems Off of 0l
Seriously. Loved the improv nature of it compared to their studio version; the way the piano drifts out at the end...my lord
When that sax kicks in.. oof
Her runs 🤯
So much soul, so much flow. Love it!
I come back to this at least once a month, legitimately. BBNG will forever be one of my favorite groups.
LOVE In Your Eyes. Thank you NPR for doing these videos. I've discovered so many great artists because of them.
Can we get Charlotte Day Wilson her own Tiny Desk?!??
that's gotta be coming up soon! her album is crazy good!!!!!
Wow, she sounds as good as the recording. Great to put faces to the sounds I've been jamming for the past 8 years
The way that "Cashmere" was played is something else, it accessed something inside me that is truly an inspiration to what I aspire to bring to people with music.
No ads!!!! Love this channel!
been a fan since BBNG 1 mixtape days glad to see they're blowing up
In love with Charlotte Day Wilson's voice...and Leland's jacket, too!
I'm super high and I swear Charlotte Day Wilson has just have me safe passage to another dimension. Highly recommend
Preach on ❤
120th time listening to this. I haven’t felt a story be told through music so beautifully in a long time. I have downloaded this in fear of it being taken away by YT. Eternally grateful for this work of art.
yessssss amazing i was *just* listening to their cover of dilla's fall in love.
Charlotte Day Wilson''s voice is mesmeric
Better n better every time I listen!!! How could u thumbs down these soulful cats!!!
Charlotte Day Wilson is unreal here
THAT VOICE ! Wooooow !!!!!!
This is incredible. Classy as hell.
crazy how young they are and all so talented. I love it!!! amazing what a generation inspired these young kids.
I don't understand people that give these tiny desk vids thumbs down.
The same people who tried to make Hobo Johnson a thing. It's madness
The piano in stereo sounds amazing
Even though they look 16, they play like masters. Even the vocalist looks so young!
They are so soulful. Everything about this is jut pleasing to my ears.
설레는 음악이다 …기분 좋아지는 베이스 라인

I couldn’t close my mouth til in your eyes finished, it is just so beautiful this performance, utterly brilliant
I haven't heard the boys play with vocals (apart from Tyler's spirited approach) but Charlotte works impeccably with their sound
Anyone else get chills every time they play Cashmere?

I was going through NPR's Tiny Desk Concert playlist and was thinking that it would be amazing if BBNG would have a concert too. And here it is! I'm so happy that they did this and I found it.
