San Diego-based trio Thee Sacred Souls made its mark at the Tiny Desk with satin vocals and vintage melodies. Paying homage to southern California Latino culture meeting American soul roots, the group's sweet fusion melodies brought history and love into the space.
The trio opened the concert with "Will I See You Again?," which tells the tale of a confused, forlorn lover with soft, harmony-laden lyrics and bouncy guitar and bass. Lead singer Josh Lane then pauses to share a message of love, the kind the band is focused on consistently extending. "Love Is The Way" paints a picturesque image of a sweet, timeless love fit to be celebrated top-down out the back of a low-rider. "Easier Said than Done" brings more reflective energy atop floaty high harmonies from Tiny Desk veteran Astyn Turr. With a transition to a horns-adorned "Love Comes Easy," the band hits even more of a groove before ending with the easy-listening "Can I Call You Rose?" The band brought what it does best: great melodies, romantic lyrics and a vibe that fills any space it plays with light and tranquility, fit for any era.

So happy to see this group gain recognition. It's a joy to have had Thee Sinceers do a Tiny Desk, and now Thee Sacred Souls! We just need a Durand Jones & Indications Tiny Desk now @NPR
I second that !!!!! Durand and Aaron Frazier

Hear! Hear! 🥰
Word.
I went to church with Josh and he was a regular at the coffee shop I worked at in my home town, that was over ten years ago. He told us all he was moving to San Diego and that was history, until now pulling up this video and going......wait a minute! I know that guy. Awesome stuff, glad to see he's killing it.
Getting to know someone like that before he blew up has to be the biggest flex us normal folk could have. Thanks for sharing👍🏿
He seems like such a genuine nice person.
Did you meet him in Sacramento?
My wife in from shopping all excited about a song she just heard titled can I call you rose.she is old school so I figured it was an old classic nope it only sounded old school it's a great song might become a classic one day. I love it keep singing about love that's what the world is in need of today more than anything peace and love to everyone.
Amazing story….😊😊
MY TEENAGER INTRODUCED ME TO THIS GROUP AND I SAID TO MYSELF “SELF YOU AND HUBBY HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB WITH HER MUSIC CHOICE. “
Mine too! Me too!
Sorry, but I can't hear you. Please speak a little louder.
I say the same when my kids start playing old school classics! -so proud!
The background vocalists are super dope.
Literally perfect!!!!!!!!!😭Thank you for pointing that out
Go check out their old backup singers, even better.
Do you remember their names? I think one of them were Tatiana, but I don’t remember. I saw them in Boston
@@SD-yw7iiTatiana & Jensine Benitez. No disrespect to the current vocals as they great. However, when they had these two IMO they were elite.
I got the old backup singers signatures on my LP when I saw them in Houston a while back. They really were dope and brought a nice vibe to the group.
Finally a right band goes viral from social media, these highly talented guys are deserve it❤️
Thank you for saying it. Nothing negative here!❤
I second that emotion..👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I am 61 years old and this group gives me an early 70's vibe! Extremely well done!!!!
YESSSSS!!!!
I'm 65 and it gives me... goosebumps!
Yes
This live version of “Can I call you rose” is chef kiss🥹🤌🏼
Yes
,👌🏻
👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
They have a sound you could hear in the 70s but it still feels so fresh. Love these guys, their debut album was amazing. They make music that heals the soul.
Album is fuego
It's called, "Souldies"
Sixties as well.
The 50s too!
When I first heard this group I thought it was some underground Marvin Gaye I haven’t heard before.
Thank you NPR. From the bottom of my heart for inviting all of the ones i wanna see here. Next Cleo Sol pls, + Thank you to Thee Sacred Souls, that was a blessing.
Cleo Sol is a must
Yesssss🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
AGREED
YESSSS we need Cleo Sol on here!!!
Omg yeeess!! I love her
I love that they are bringing back that old style again, like Marvin Gaye,The Isley Brothers and Donny Hathaway.
Yess
Yes I close my eyes and the music makes me feel good
I've been missing this 'sound' for a LONG time. That 50's, 60's, early 70's sound
The engineering on these Tiny Desk concerts is always so good! It can't be easy to make an office sound this good, so props to the audio team!
Best in the business
I second the compliment but you'd be surprised. I imagine the geometry of the room plus the clutter helps with isolating sound. Plus, great tracking equipment, top it off with the great recording/mixing engineers it might not be too tedious a task.
Good point.. However, I feel like that lead vocal mic sounds pretty thin and dry. I am missing that chamber reverb sound big time. I think this genre should be drenched in verb like their albums are. Just an observation no hate whatsoever!
@@LouieShowers I agree the reverb would help to bring a more finished sound to the mix but the way it sounds is fine for the live recording vibe
Josh Rogosin is a genius
0:00 Will I see you Again
5:40 Love is the Way
9:02 Easier Said than Done
12:14 Love Comes Easy
16:39 Can I Call You Rose?
You're a hero, thank you very much for this ❤️💯🎶👌🏿
Legend
Thank you love
Thanks 💖💐
this is wonderful 👏
seeing my best friend since 1st grade on keys on Tiny Desk is unreal
Pretty cool. Crushing it, too. We'll all accomplish what we want if we believe.
He is killing it!!!

I heard a song called Can I Call You Rose, looked up the musicians, and became an instant fan. All their songs take me straight back to my childhood in the early 70's. Yup, I want to go back to that era effective immediately. Blessings up to Thee Sacred Souls! One Love!😊❤️🙏🏾
Wait that’s not a rendition of an older song? I thought they covered a song at first if not man they are BAD 🔥🔥
70s Motown...I love it...
👌🏻👍🏻😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰
Pure excellence. Hard to believe this wasn’t recorded in the 70s!
Factuality
OMG when I heard Can I Call You Rose, I said who’s the oldies group I’ve never heard of.
@@av8rKCM exactly what I thought. My boyfriend sent it and he’s really into all kinds of music I don’t know about. I just assumed he knew an older band. Then I saw the year recorded was the 2020’s and was like this must be a mistake lol
I swear!!
Ain’t nothing like real music, real instruments… refreshing and that’s not a shot at the beat makers
This sound is 60s 70s California Gold! This is what we call Lowrider oldies.
Man I feel like I’m in my uncles car in the 80’s on the way to school while he was playing the oldies from Motown. I’ll never forget the good feelings that music has brought me just like this music.
Reminiscent of Motown days, beautiful soulful music
Smokey and Marvin Gaye vibes
Totally! And the white guys with moustache as the band gives strong Muscle shoals vibes
@@rodrigomunozmarmolejo9337white guys with mustaches (me included) understand the hilarity of life. Worth interaction 95% of the time.
This is like a dream came true.....
Amen. 🙏🏼
🙏🏼!!
Hit me thinking my dad never played this song when he jammed. He would have loved this song. RIP 2014 (‘49)
I healed a little bit more just by listening to this today. Timing is Divine. Peace, Love & Gratitude to NPR & The Sacred Souls & anyone reading this comment. 🧡
I came here for a stem of “Rose” and now I got a bouquet 💐. Thank you Sacred Souls.
The background vocalists are carryinggg!! I’m glad this group is finally getting the recognition they deserve✨
The introduction before Love is the Way is just beautiful. Their vibrations are so high, I can feel the love coming through my screen and warming my soul 🧡💛
I called my mom today for the first time since October. I finally forgave both of us for hurting eachother, I haven't felt close to her since age 5. Your music brought me home to her love.
That is an amazing testimony. Much love to you and your mother.
The Power of music!
Yes, like they said an amazing testimony displaying the power of music! Blessings to you and mom.

The only song I need 😅
This rendition of Can I Call You Rose may be the most pure perfect song I've ever heard.
God, his voice. Hello again, Marvin. We missed you.
I just read the blurb written about where this sound comes from. It's funny, because for me, they bring back that old school mid 60's period I grew up with in NYC. . As soon as I heard it, the vibe lit me up with recognition.
No wayyyy, they made it to tiny desk, what a great friday🎉❤
Miss Escobar, can i call you Rose?!😉🌹🌹🌹
nice name george
This is the first time I've heard Sacred souls and i think they are excellent. As a man of a certain age this is reminiscent of the music i grew up on, well executed vocals top notch.💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Look up weak for your love
We call it, Souldies. Like lowrider oldies, but soulful vibes

This band is amazing! Just discovered them TODAY! Takes me back to an era before my time, but in my time! 80s baby
The first time i listen to this group and the only thing that comes to mind is: THANK YOU. My heart is overflowed with chill n joyous vibes 🤍☺️✨🌷🫧🙏🏼🌞
Oh my,...beautiful...the jamz, the voices,... harmonies,... your word and lyrics. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Thank you to the Internet for finally giving this group some love. I've been listening to them for a couple years now, it reminds me of being a kid in the late 80 early 90's sitting in my uncle's lowrider
This is magical! 😍 Was sad and a bit lonely on Mother’s Day (today). My kids are with their dad so I was left with my thoughts 🤦🏾♀️😂 but this has helped me to transcend that. No logic or reason… just transcendence! 🥰🙌🏾
Saw these guys in Copenhagen, even had the chance to talk with them afterwards. Truly sacred!
These guys are holding it down for San Diego!!! love to see it.
This group is amazing! Seriously their music take me in a trip so deep. Good vibes from Chile! 🇨🇱

Spotify algorithim blessed me two years ago with this group. Summer of 2022 was their album on repeat. Got to see them in Toronto soon after. Happy to see them getting more exposure.

Background vocals are angelic😍😍😍
Please check out the singer on the right: her name is Astyn Turrentine! I went to high school with her, and we went on some trips together. I asked her to sing to me before we fell asleep and it was truly angelic. She is a wonderful person! Check out her new solo song self portrait.
I just discovered this band and love everything I have heard..mix of old and new!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, VOICES OF LOVE AND A BAND TO MATCH. FIREEEEEEE!!!!
i was listening to will i see u again this whole time thinking it was a old song, not knowing it was a modern old school band!
Had the pleasure of seeing them live last year in April was lucky enough to meet all the members after the show got the record signed I even got a rose that Josh gives out at there live shows which is now pressed in the back of the Record all of the members where so lovely humble and genuine they really are pure souls and there running away track is a cult classic on the Bristol northern soul scene it’s so amazing to see so many people dance so joyfully to that stunning high energy track sacred souls you have my heart
Love you guys ❤
I never will be able to express my ongoing appreciation for Tiny Desk introducing me to artists I would otherwise miss out on.
P.S. In addition to giving me nostalgia overall, that Easier Said Than Done takes me straight to Smokey Robinson
The bass player every band needs.
Can I call you rose was the first song I heard from them but after watching this I have added every song they played to my playlist I love this band soooooo much and their energy.
Same. I want everyone to feel how I feel about it!
My intuition said is Friday music. After a nice joint. This is hitting in so many different way !! Lol
The melody, rhythm, heart and soul they put into their music. You can feel it. You can definitely feel it. Much love ❤
Hands down the best tiny desk I’ve ever seen. They bring such a unique sound it’s wonderful🥲 I don’t understand how a group could be so absolutely perfect together
It’s been awhile since I last a really, really tight band. Flawless. Gained a new fan. And that first song, my goodnesssss! Only way to describe it is like love at first sound!
Been waiting for this one!! Seriously one of my favorite bands! Saw them live and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had

I discovered „Can I call you Rose“ recently and made it one of my favorite songs of this year already. Pure beauty
I literally just discovered them on Spotify!!! What a pleasant surprise to see them on here. I love their old school sound
They opened & closed with my 2 favorite songs. What a great way to start a morning.
Thank you NPR & Thee Sacred Souls, I'm in love with this performance. I wish I could like it over and over. Love from a fellow sacred soul
One of the greatest live performances on the net ever!!!...they've captured my soul, ...Love from Cape Town SA
Been digging these guys for a few years now, cool to see them on Tiny! That first song was love at first hearing.
It's so rare so when it happens it's extra special!!
Wow. I just heard of Thee Sacred Souls yesterday. I heard this dope vibe(Future Lover)while watching Mr & Mrs Smith(prime). I Shazam it immediately. But to wake up this morning and they on my feed in Tiny Desk is amazing!!
Astyn Turr is such an amazing singer❤ I listen to the song One on One (she recorded together with Wildson) so very often and everytime she mesmerizes me with her tunefulness, rhythm, strain-free singing, effortless expressiveness and excellent vocal delivery with such ease. I hope she'll become a household name soon too. She deserves it. We ❤Astyn🎉
Right on, Sacred Souls ❤ 🕉
Oh my God, it reminds me of the seventies, the band is great, the vocals sound perfect, everything is great. Thanks Tiny Desk, for the great choice, I love it. From Brazil.
Found the video to Can I Call You Rose last night. I immediately fell in love with this band.
Respect how he gets low at the end of first jam, to get the focus on the backing singers.
These cats are the real deal.
😭😭😭I just woke up to this, I haven't even listened.. I'm already happy
So happy that they are getting the recognition they deserve. One of the best modern soul groups out there right now. Been following them for the past 4 years and they've gained a fan for life!
