Aug. 6, 2018 | Bobby Carter -- There was a shift in Mac Miller's boisterous demeanor as he started the third of his three-song Tiny Desk set. It's the first time he's performed tracks from his new album, Swimming, in front of an audience. On "2009," he rubbed his chin with clinched eyes, looking like a young man who's beginning to crack the code. Backed by a piano loop and a string quartet, he reflected on his journey's peaks and valleys thus far.
I ain't asking why no more
I know I'll take it if it's mine
I don't stay inside the lines
It ain't 2009 no more
Yeah, I know what's behind that door
With nearly a decade under his belt at 26 years old, these words ring like an artist twice his age.
We were introduced to Mac Miller via 2011's XXL Freshman Class, which featured a special crop of MCs such as Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and YG, all of whom are now considered in the upper echelon of hip-hop. After his big splash, he's been able to find a groove and consistently release quality rap records, ultimately keeping his name in the conversation with the other young greats. His 2011 album, Blue Slide Park, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first independently distributed debut album to do so since 1995's Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound. These consecutive triumphs amassed plenty of fame, fortune and insurmountable obstacles, causing a stumble here and there. Throughout the years, however, Mac has brushed himself off and put it in the music.
For this performance, Mac Miller invited frequent collaborator Thundercat, who graced the Tiny Desk last year and will join Mac on tour this fall. Thundercat put on a dazzling shaker routine and played the deep centerpiece bass line on "What's The Use?" These Swimming iterations don't veer far away from the recorded versions, but here, his lyrics seem easier to interpret under live instrumentation.

Yeah same for me, I hope it's always here, need to save it somehow just in case
nothing in the world just makes me feel anything more than this beautiful music, its unbelievable how much this shot can effect your life
After a million listens, I just have to appreciate that I am a 55 year old man who grew up with rap music in every form and followed it throughout the years, but this is one of the few rap performances that actually work in the Tiny Desk format. Common did pretty well too, but rap just doesn't translate in this format as easily unless you are a master at both rap and musical performances. Mac was clearly both.
JID tiny desk was perfect too, Denzel Curry one was pretty good
Tobe Nwigwe was great as well.

My son just got me hooked on him. He bought a record player, and a Mac Miller vinyl (forgot the name) but we spent a rainy Sunday afternoon in his room listening to it, the warm sound from the vinyl, rain hitting the windows, and the bouncy, groovy tunes…it’s a memory with my son that I will hold in my heart forever ❤
@@laurenr8388 ❤️it!!
I was just thinking about this. I never realized how jazzy he got and his clever timing on the beat was great.
When he passed I couldn't listen to his music without feeling down. I decided to play his music today. I instantly felt happy but was bittersweet. I dont know why i didnt even know the guy but man he just seemed so familiar. R.I.P MAC.
he was a real one. obviously I never met him either, but this preformance is one for the books. you could really tell he was passionate about his lyrics, and they really hit home to many folks. RIP Mac

I’m having a tough day and the moment he says the world so small till it ain’t brought me so much ease
I'm Brazilian and just know Mac Miller this year... i've heard his albuns for one month, followed her on instagram and after more than one month I could undertand his is not alive. It was a shock to me, i really became a fan. It's a very weird feeling, missing a guy I didn't even follow his trajectory
Came here to pay my respects to the legend. Gone but never forgotten.

I can't hear 2009 and not cry. This is real art, 90 percent of rappers, good or not could never produce this
whats makes this song one of his best is he freestyled most of the song while in the studio. its straight from the heart

You can literally SEE the love between him and thundercat.
Sucks to know how many people around him loved him but he didn’t fix his path
It’s crazy, I never really appreciated his music. But after he died I heard 2009 and it hit me so hard that I felt it in my soul. Thanks Mac for being with us the time you could😢 13:35
Crazy . Me either now it's like I'm missing a friend
listen to it in the pitch black with headphones on. because he free styled that song in the pitch black beside his mic , when you listen to it like that , it hits even harder
Same the fact that I’m getting sober right now after 16 years. I heard the song recently even after being a Big Mac fan back in the day. But just hearing “it ain’t 2009 no more, yeah I know what’s behind that door” idk if that’s how he meant it but in regards to my addiction it’s helping me stay sober…like bro it ain’t 2009 no more it’s time to get clean.
2009 is so good that actually should be illegal…

Honestly his voice, if you listen closely, has almost the same inflection of amy winehouse. Its a tale as old as time. Briliance comes from the fires of a tortured soul. Its almost as if humans are unable to get "there" with out all that comes along with it. Its a terrible irony and truth. But it seems some people know that what they leave is greater then them staying around to see the long term impacts. R.i.p. Mac. Love.

@@masterroshimagazines4354 fuckin sucks its the ones that choose to be different that get taken so early
This is actually one of the best live performances of music ever its just so smooth the whole time ... Pretty much perfect ... Notnjust sayin that cuz hees gone but like u said his growth as an artist is amazing .. Ive never been a huge fan but ive always listened to him since about 2012 and hes evolved every album but this performance is on the level of the roots
Basic? Nothing basic about this man. He WAS THE GROOVE. Stupid Bitch .
I think even when he was making fun catchy sing along songs there was always something deeper in each of the tracks.
5years.. and still rocking.. will always come back here..
Always come back here when am feeling a bit down and it takes me away from it for a short while. Rip Mac
The smile on someone's face when that groove hits ... I felt this

@Karson Hill dude same I only started listening to mac a few days after he passed away and he’s been my favorite artist since then. I can always find myself relating to things he says and I see him as my father figure tbh since I grew up without a dad
@@Dante-mr1jm started listening in 2015 and felt late, long as you guys made it that’s all that matters

Amen, nothing but a legend and an angel 😇
yep, I remember being in High School and my cousin started listening to him before he hit the charts. Now that I reflect upon it, 2009 seems so far and so different. Despite the recession and being poor af, we still lived life.
