August 15, 2016 by BOBBY CARTER • Good luck trying to classify Anderson .Paak and his band The Free Nationals. Much of their sound is layered atop a soulful hip-hop foundation; from there, your safest bet is to call it a hodgepodge of genres in the best way possible. Guitarist Jose Rios and bassist Kelsey Gonzalez inject a hard-rock edge into the Hi-Tek-produced "Come Down," this set's opening number. When you hear them play the first few jazz chords of "Heart Don't Stand A Chance," it's hard to simply call this R&B.
It's been a slow build for .Paak, who released a few mixtapes before his 2014 debut album Venice. This year has marked his official breakout with Malibu, on which he did what so many in his position fail to do: He capitalized. After bursting into the spotlight with his appearances on Dr. Dre's Compton LP, he immediately prepped the release of Malibu. The album sculpted an entirely new lane for Anderson .Paak. He can rhyme with best of 'em, and his vocal styling, reminiscent of '70s and '80s greats, is invigorating when set against today's tender R&B elite. Before all that, he's a drummer-slash-bandleader.
I've experienced three separate presentations of this band. First, there's the recorded version, on which .Paak collaborates with some of hip-hop's finest producers. Then, their tight stage show hits you in the chest with 90-plus minutes of pure energy. In the midst of a whirlwind tour, they stopped by the Tiny Desk and reworked three cuts from Malibu, along with an audience request that shocked even them. They stripped down and pulled back just enough to fill the room.

The fact that Anderson can rap against the beat while perfectly keeping time on the drums is the clearest indication of his insane talent
and with the insane pocket too! will always work towards playing like this
@@cringusmingus he's talented beyond measure
Listen to the high hat patten during Heart Don't Stand a Chance. It's not an easy 4/4 eighth note pattern, he's doing some slinky J. Dilla style un-quantized drums feel and he just nails it on the drums and vocally simultaneously. Unreal.
Without looking at them too lol
To do stuff like this something has to be automated, like you can’t think about two things at once. Meaning his drumming is automated, for your drumming to be that good automated means you’re crazy good imagine how good he is with full focus on the drums, crazy
i don't think people understand how crazy hard it is to sing and play an instrument at the same time. .paak doesn't only rap and play an instrument, he's going at two different rhythms at the same time through rapping and drumming. it takes an immense level of skill. i'm so in awe
It’s incredibly difficult Amazing
This is crazy difficult. He is talented, but also years of practice
surely its just muscle memory? Hes done it enough times. Correct me if im wrong though :-)
@@krisjones1341 well yeah of course at this point after doing music for that long but i’m saying it’s hard in general. your average person cannot do both
@@krisjones1341at its core it is just muscle memory, but so much practice over an extended period of time is what it comes down to! Putting effort and time into what it takes to acquire a skill. it’s the drive
Honestly this performance is Grammy worthy. there should be a category for live one take music.

I’m not a drummer but singing and trying to keep up with the beat at the same time is definitely something an expert could do the drums is the main piece he’s insanely talented
you are wrong I think he is great but he is rushing some parts the tempo is off
@@Fellowrser nah man, his drum parts take advantage of flams and accents. he isn't off, it's just how the groove is set. most rnb songs from the 90's did that a lot
I was just thrilled to see me and him use the same drumsticks!
Theres a youtube drummer/teacher who reviewed part of this performance and said the same thing.

Deff 🤙
all about practice, it was impossible to me before to play simple ukulele chords and sing at the same time, now its nothing.
Obviously this is way more impressive, but same premise.
I s'pose the brain is wired to the rhythm of language so it takes work to separate drums and words. I can't play bass and sing.
I love it ❤️
Personally I find it easier to drum and sing than to play other instruments, guess it depends on your musical journey you know?
It’s incredible how much better this tiny desk concert sounds compared to the studio recordings
true
Tautoko bro, totally agree. Wife and me both agree that this paired back live tiny desk is superb. And superior to the album.

The best tiny desk ever, Anderson is so smooth and so talented. The origins of his influence are so varied yet so evident, it’s jazzy, bluesy, old skool R&B, disco and what you get listeners hear as a hip hop beat is just a beat from all of the above influences. Long live King Anderson

I mean, NPR is mostly publicly owned so if you're in America, chances are some of your tax money made this happen
That is exactly what I want to say. OMG.
Just discovering NPR station and played this 15 min clip abt 3 times already. Great job fellas!
That's what the capitalism wants you to think, bro, music should be free
99% of drummers could play these grooves but not many can play with that feel and backbeat so effortlessly. Add in that he's also doing this while focusing on singing, lyrics, messing with Jose, leading the band through song structure/improvised sections etc. What a weapon.
That's what you call Prince type s***, 💯👍🥁🎸🎤🎹
His touch and feel is so evident. Can’t teach that, hard work pays off.
Yeah, that's what people aren't really understanding. The feel and the cohesion are insane.
Right?
I could possibly play this
As a drummer, his playing without vocals are so lovely and high quality.
When you consider he is also the vocalist this is just remarkable.
Another person that can do these things at a remarkable level is Scarlett Stevens of San Cisco. Totally different vibe but kills the drums and vocals simultaneously.
Anderson paak is what I call a musician 🔥🔥
Imagine being able to play drums and rap/sing at the same time. Phenomenal talent.
AND make it look so easy the whole time!! I’d be so stressed
Extremely multitalented musicians used to be relatively commonplace in the industry, especially in the 60s-70s, but sadly, they're a rare breed these days.
@@GreenGretel its not that they're rare, its just that they don't get enough exposure
As a drummer I cannot begin to describe how impressive this is. Just playing the songs on time will take such a huge part of your brain and body, and that's without any cool fills/improv. And now throw impeccable vocals on top, and it becomes THAT much harder. Dude is a human metronome.
It's not rare...🙄

yah like an employee
I had that thought
I didn't know Anderson .Paak until now. Wow. This made me a big fan right off the rip! Thanks for all the new music I get to enjoy!!!!
You can feel the soul in his voice 🔥
playing drums and singing is hard. paak is talented!
Not that hard. I honestly think playing with the guitar is harder.
Depends on what youre playing
It all depends of the rhytm of playing.
Right. A simple 4/4 beat like this isn't hard at all though. I like seeing singers who play drums though. Aaron Gillespie is my favorite.
Honestly with the right hand pattern (even though its 4/4) in this one, singing does become a challenge. Its easy with quarter notes as you've got space to sing
the fact he can balance so many rhythms at once with so much EASE, playing drums is possibly the hardest thing to pair with singing and he makes it look like a breeze, pure music from this dude just cool all the way through
yeah that was very impressive
As I read your comment he sang, “don’t I make it look easy, don’t I make it look good?!”.
nah thats easy
@@arnavkapadia6947 do it then
@@arnavkapadia6947 to make it groovy and be sexy like he does. Trust me, I record plenty of drummers and most of them can‘t.
i played this once at an afterhour for a couple of friends who were high on molly and we had to stop listening to music altogether afterwards because nothing else could compare. they set the bar too high, we just sat there mesmerized by this amount of talent and swagger.
