CORRUPTION IN PARAGUAY- The Effects of It and How to Work around It

- Although we love Paraguay as a whole for the freedom and liberty, corruption is very real. And if you know what corruption looks like, it's visible everywhere.
I could have covered this more extensively but didn't want the video to get too long so I chose the places where it effects the day-to-day life in Paraguay more.
These include
- many businesses not having the required food handling certification from health and safety
- highway patrol officers bribing motorists
- highway building guidelines not being met during construction, and
- government employees making it difficult to obtain any government issued document in order to try and have you bribe them.
As you can imagine, the corruption has costed the government, and the people, a lot of opportunities for growth in their economy and productivity.
But, it's not impossible to navigate around most of these as long as one knows how to spot it.
Sorry for your loss Thank you for your honesty about the problems there.
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing as well as the unvarnished observations and experiences thus far in Paraguay.
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching!
We miss you already! Glad to see you back to sharing your knowledge ❤
We miss you too! ❤️
Thanks for all your videos, may your heart heal quickly. ❤
fascinating stuff!
Thanks, this outline was very clear.
Corruption is and will destroy this country, please stay always open eyed to not get scammed or from thiefs. Im paraguayan studying economy and speaking 4 foreing languages, I still dont getting a job! mentioning this just to proof how bad is the corruption thing here. i will start working as medical interpreter remote for a foreing country company. But always considering to travel probably to Europe. wish you the best always !
Thanks for your Videos! Which Paraguay Expat Groups do you use and which would you recommend?
You’re welcome. I’m in a group called Expats in Paraguay, it has 7.3k members.
Atleast the taxes are low, it would be especially bad if they had High Corruption and High Taxes
Yes! That it is.
sorry for your loss, glad you went home to be there
Thank you. So are we!
Hello Mrs. Wiebe! Sorry about the loss of your dad. Thank you for reporting the corruption that exists in Paraguay. Keep safe
Thank you!
I agree. The toll roads in Paraguay are maintained by private companies. They are a world better than the public roads, just like mentioned here,
Condolences to you and may your Dad rest in peace.
Thank you!
My condolences
Thank you.
I guess thats the price you pay to live in Paraguay is low taxes. If you want all these fixed, the governement would need to increase taxes to pay for all these upgrades.
For sure, every place has their pros and cons.
Latin America....
“Costed” doesn’t exist. The past tense is also “cost”
I guess it’s starting to show I’ve spoken a lot more German in the past year to year and a half lol starting to mix up my words in English a little here and there as well in daily conversations.
Platdeutsch isn’t meine mutter sprache. Da Sind viele Deutsche leute in diesen gegend. Noch viele mehr in Hohenau.
How much do they want for a bride?
My experience is that they would not directly ask you for anything and just tell you that they will write you a ticket. This means you will have to go and spend time at the police station, pay for the ticket, maybe even have your vehicle impounded, etc. In other words, a pain you know where. So a lot of local drivers suggest themselves the bribe to the officer just to be let go, and over time it becomes a vicious circle. Having said all that, I have been stopped in "developed" countries and have paid hundreds of dollars for "speeding" when I know it really wasn't a big deal at all, maybe just a few miles over the speed limit, i.e., no different than the cars passing me by. In developed countries (I won't mention names), this ticketing thing becomes a money raising operation for the local police, undoubtedly. So, there are 2 sides to the coin,
There is not a set amount they will ask for. They say it’s a certain amount for writing a ticket or somewhat lower if you pay it right there right away.
WOAH! You mean BRIBE, right???
You're not selling women to be wives, are you?
🤭
@@Frieda_Wiebe Then, it has changed some, and this is a new tactic they use; thank you for the clarification,
@mutiny_on_the_bounty I wasn't aware they sold brides!!
I'm sorry you lost your father from cancer. My girlfriend lives in Asuncion and she has cancer because I know it's a death sentence in Paraguay I sent her to Ecuador for treatment where even some Americans go for cancer treatment. I wouldn't live in Paraguay for ten minutes after what I know about that country and the corruption and the poor medical care in that country. The sooner I get my girlfriend and her sons out of that country the better I will feel. Today I got a message from her, she was in Quito getting her cancer treatment and she had to rush home because a group of Paraguayans broke into her apartment, tied her oldest son up and stole everything in the place, even their clothes. Paraguay is nothing but a rat hole because the police don't do anything about these break ins. Now she has to fly back to Ecuador to resume her treatments. It's a lucky thing I bought her insurance that covers all of her cancer treatments and problems that may exist after the treatments are finished. Paraguay is not the place to set up a business of any kind and it's not a good place to live, I don't care how cheap living is in that country.
@@Hugovaldez777Yeah, Germany a first world country that had leaders that were nothing but war mongers. Sorry but I was a war baby and I'll never forget what the Nazis did. I have been to Poland where the concentration camps are and I saw how wonderful the Germans were. As as I'm concerned I wouldn't want a German national living close to me. They found a nice mark in Paraguay where people will bend their heads in front of them.
you should be ashamed to talk like that about another country that has been through so much if you are unhappy with how they do things then move
Was anything I said incorrect?
@@Frieda_WiebeNo you didn’t say anything incorrect. First so sorry for your loss and you are doing a great job with the videos. Keep up the great work and the information you provide is right on. You cannot please everyone. I have been to PY six times and I have seen it firsthand. My wife of 35 years was born in Paraguay and came to the USA as a teenager. So I know a little about what goes on. Overall I love Paraguay and it’s people are the best in my book. Continue what you do and I just found your channel a couple of days ago. Oh and I can’t forget about the food My favorite is everything lol
@@joececere4918 thank you for your kind words. I know there is no way to please everyone and yes, the food is great. No meat beats the Paraguay grass fed beef 🥩
Michael: YOU'RE the one who should be ashamed. You can't find anything factually wrong with what she said.
Very negative, skewed perspective. I am sorry for the country that has welcomed you in. 😞There's always Canada if it's that bad.
First: the country didn't welcome us in, we were born here so therefore this is our country.
Second: I'm here to tell the truth. This is not just what I see, rather this is how Paraguayans in general view this country also.
I would hate it if all I did was talk up the country, entice others to move here only for them to be hit with the reality of what this country actually is. I want everyone who is thinking of moving here to know the truth. I want them to know they're not moving to a Utopia.
@@Frieda_Wiebe You are not in a position to decree what other Paraguyan's think. Your opinion isn't that powerful. You produce a document from the USA calling Paraguay corrupt. No credibility there. You complain about the stingy food outlets that cater to people with little money. If you have your way they will be dragged into compliance and pass those costs onto their customers. Your comments about the corrupt situation with cedulas is disrespectful to those who going through the process. They don't need you pointing fingers at officials as they go through that. At least there's a pathway in Paraguay for those fleeing trashed countries like Canada.
Perhaps Canada is better. Where Police bash innocent protestors and the govt closes their bank accounts. Yeah, I agree, you should go there.
Totally agree with you and I am Paraguayan, descendant of Spaniards, Guaraní, Portuguese and French - descendant of the survivors of the two brutal wars our country endured. She doesn't speak for me nor my ancestors. I was very disappointed after watching this, we aren't perfect but this isn't a hellhole disguised as "Utopia" either.
If the country was that corrupt like she portrayed it it'd be worse than Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and North Korea, etc. All our countries have some degree of corruption, none are perfect, including Canada, the only difference is that we aren't hypocrite about it.
That's the problem of only consuming media that wants to turn the place in a woke-socialist unlivable sh*th*le; for them the country is worst than the apocalypse, they're always publishing negative propaganda for gullible people and so foreigners never learn about the existence of the country or are discouraged about this option.
Saludos.
PS: to the channel's owner, sorry for your loss.
@@helenanha4 I think anyone that has lived in Canada (or most Western countries) and calls Paraguay corrupt has blinkers on. As for corruption causing bad roads....well, at least Paraguay isn't taxing its people to death. And the food handling laws...give me a break. I'd rather an unlicensed food shop than eating gmo frankenfood. The biggest criminal in this world today is Trudeau. If you want to do a vid on corruption, start there.
as a Paraguayan, she doesn´t speak for me aswell....she is not in a position to talk about my country like that, we are in southamerica, corruption is in everywhere, not only in my country, maybe Canada is better for you and your standards ma´am.
