What you often hear with ABBA, Twon, is an undercurrent of inspiration from classical music. Disco really shouldn't be timeless, but ABBA's is...and that's why. In particular, they use a ton of baroque style counterpoint...

Hello, i'm so glad to see you with a first reaction to ABBA
this is ABBA, the swedish pop group leads in 70s, decade after BEATLES
ABBA, as BEATLES, was so versatility in genres and styles of music, had sad ir melancholic songs like these, or happiest and dancing songs with catchy melodies and poweful chorus
    ABBA (1972/82) was two couples:
    Agnetha (blonde singer) &
    Björn (guitarist songwriter)
    Benny (pianist songwriter) &
    Anni Frid (brunette singer)
"The winner takes it all" (1980) is for me the best interpretation of a song that I heard in all my life by any singer or band
It is interpretation, because it is more than just singing, it is also acting and transmitting, and the lead singer Agnetha does all that and on a superlative level
Beyond the morbid that the story of this song produces (the lyrics about a divorce, written by the guitarist Björn and sung by his ex-wife, the blonde Agnetha), the structure reflects a change: it is the first time in all ABBA songs that whoever has the leading voice has been alone from beginning to end,
She goes one way and the choirs go the other (they do not add up, they remain in the background)
and in the end She is left alone passive and exposed, while the chorus and the music finish so up
That is why I feel that Agnetha does an extraordinary performance (extraordinary: out of the ordinary)
Her face is very expressive and accompanies the various tones and nuances of her majestic vocalization.
"The winner takes it all" is a great song, it's in my ABBA Top 5
It is the favorite of British fans,
but fundamentally is the one chose
    by Björn and Agnetha
And their own words is the one that is worth more
I wish You continue to react ABBA
I suggest the ballad pop "Chiquitita"
premier in Concert for UNICEF 1979
    czcams.com/video/oMIw_y9uRT8/video.html
    (ABBA donated royalties to UNICEF)
This song is different in style,
so You can check it and see the versatily of ABBA in music

ABBA was a group from Sweden--two married couples. They were extremely successful, internationally. I think they had multiple #1 songs in almost every European, Australian, & American markets. When they started, the two singers (the women) couldn't speak English & had to sing phonetically...but they learned English.
Neither marriage survived the success. She & her husband divorced first. Her husband was the one without the beard. He wrote this song for her to sing while they were going through the divorce. A very personal song for her.

nice to see your first reaction to ABBA songs
this is a Masterpiece of ABBA
a deep lyrics about divorce by the guitarist Björn
And a fantasic interpretation by the lead singer
Agnetha FĂ€ltskog (his ex wife) with her emotional and powerful voice
in the same album of 1980, the opening track was "Super trouper"
with the lead voice by the other singer, the brunette Frida
You could check it to react and see the different voices of ABBA
both songs was #1 in UK Official Charts

ABBA we're the consumate professionals & Perfectionists, they worked & worked until they got it right. They we're fairly big in America but colossal around the rest of the world. One of the biggest selling bands of all time globally. Nine No 1 singles in The UK alone at the time when vinyl sales we're at their peak. A few years ago they were offered 1 Billion Dollars to reform and do some concerts but they turned it down. It's been almost 30yrs since they split but they still sell around 4 million albums worldwide every year. Two hit movies (Mamma Mia & Mamma Mia - Here We Go Again" & a mega-successful stage show again called Mamma Mia & you've never heard of them!!! Hmmmm, anyway this is a wonderful song about a woman in a relationship who "Played by the rules" & got cheated on. It knocked her confidence & she has encountered that person again and is now sadly reflecting on it all. This song was No8 for three weeks in The US & is a classic. Many people have covered this but none have ever come close to Agnetha, she own's it.

I see a LOT of reactors making this mistake and I try to point it out whenever possible. The name of the group is NOT Abba. It is ABBA...all capital letters. It is an acronym for the first letter in each member's first name: Anni-frid, Benny, Bjorn & Agnetha.

The singer is Agnetha Faltskog, she had a huge solo career aside from being in one of the biggest groups of all time, Abba. She put out lots of excellent solo albums. In 2013 she had a huge hit with the song “When You Really Loved Someone”, the video for it is on CZcams. She was 63 and her voice sounded exactly like it did in the 70’s, she also looks amazing.

Try Listening to the Lyrics!! The Song/Video is a True story about her husband's affair/divorce (He's in the video. He's at the table) and he wrote the song. Now that's messed up! đŸ’”đŸ˜„

      It's not a true story
      It's a lyrics of a divorce
(a fiction that included part of their personal relation)

Bjorn did not have an affair. There were other reasons he and Agnetha divorced.
