  • TfL Rail and it's #PurpleTrain services run a service to the east of London and to the west out of Paddington, which is where I found myself to go to Zone 3 to Acton Main Line - the least used station on TfL Rail.
The station is currently being rebuilt with many improvements, but it's far from finished yet!
Here's the playlist with all the other stations in this series: www.youtube.co....

Acton is a busy area. A lot goes on here. Reasons for it being a quiet station (as someone who lives near Acton Main Line) is because we have the Central Line (North Acton Station), we have the over ground (Acton Central Station) and other underground lines such as East Acton and West Acton. We are spoilt for choice. Plus the 30 minute waiting time for each train makes it even worse. I guess with the new Elizabeth Line going into central London the station will become much less quiet.

Please be careful when trainspotting ! I live near a trainspotting sight where you can get a clean shot of public transport trains below the pedestrian / car bridge and a clean shot at industrial trains including the trains of the new elongated silk road (I'm from Germany where it now ends) on the neighboring bridge. There have been many time when people think trainspotters are jumpers because they get as close as they can to the edge or they walk backwards and nearly onto a busy road to get a wide shot of the trains.

Thanks Geoff for explaining to me why I get stuck at those temporary traffic lights for ages every time I get the bus from Acton.
One of the reasons the station is not used so much is that the factories over the road all started closing down in the 1980s. There used to be a Wall's Ice Cream factory on the opposite corner. It's always been an odd desolate station.

So excited to see my closest station on your channel! As someone who uses it once in a while, I can say that I was very dissapointed that the connection only goes twice an hour. It's by far the fastest way to get to Paddington/the city, but if you miss a train you're royally screwed. Thus I think a lot of people chose to take longer, but more frequently running routes by bus/tube. If the TFL rail would frequent the stop more often, it would definitely be my (and I think a lot more people that live around here) go to option to head into town!

But did you know that Hanson (the company, not the band) was once a bus company. When I was a kid, the house I lived in had a Hanson bus pass the front door every half hour. The guy who founded the bus company had a son (later to be known as Lord Hanson) who took the money the company got in the 1970s for selling its bus routes to West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, and used it to create the huge business empire that was the Hanson Group. That empire has mostly been split up since Lord Hanson's death, but the name still lives on in their aggregates business.
Perhaps one day you could do the least used ex-Hanson bus route. And use to pass on even more earworms to your viewers.

Geoff, you mentioned service pattern. When Crossrail started talking about journey times it was implied that all trains would stop at all stops. The geographical pattern of stations is very non-uniform. For example, there's a big gap each side of Paddington but some very close spacing elsewhere. For example, the gaps between Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath are less than a mile. All existing stations were/are being modernised for Crossrail but it would make sense if not all stations have the full service to keep journey times down.
Fun fact, the weight limit signs for the bridge used to be different! Now 18T from both directions, it used to be 17T from the west. You can still see this on Google streetview. Go back to 2012 which was around the time I looked at some urban realm ideas for Crossrail.

I can't remember the name of the model club that built it but it was sold by them in (I think) the late 1990s. Following another sale it was bought by a man living near Scunthorpe, who renamed the layout "Dragonby". It came back onto the exhibition circuit in the early 2000s and as far as I know it still is. However, its Acton Main Line roots are unmistakable.

You could talk about how TfL Rail doesn't improve the service and Crossrail won't. For some reason we're the only station that wasn't served by Heathrow Connect and now by the TfL Heathrow branch. I think with Crossrail we'll get two trains an hour to Hayes still (no improvement), and then one train to Maidenhead which happens once every two weeks but only on a Saturday with a full moon and when Brentford are playing at home in the league

Dec 2020 and not a lot has changed construction-wise. But we've had direct trains to LHR from Paddington stopping here every 30mins (now cancelled -presumably because few people are flying from Heathrow due to COVID). Let's hope that in 2021 we will see progress resume.

If Network Fails performance with the lifts at Totnes is an example of the arrival of step free access then Acton will be on a maglev line before the lifts work so dont hold your breath

I’m sure Acton Main Line had no Sunday service until TfL trains took over the routes. I stayed in the Holiday Inn in North Acton a few times. You can get good views from the station and all the GWR trains that wiz through. 😄. If you pick one of the upper rooms facing the A40.

I'm guessing station usage figure's will go up once barriers are fitted. I often wonder the difference between usage stats, and actual usage.

Geoff, In the 50's & 60's Acton Station was District Line & Piccadilly Line, Acton Station had a single track branch line to Acton Town run by the District Line. Just a one Carriage Unit to and from all day. Correct me if I am wrong on these details, Cheers.

The District/Piccadilly station was, and still is, Acton Town. The shuttle service ran to South Acton (on what is now the Overground) and closed in 1959.

I shall be using that very station three times today (11th Dec 2019) and then again the day after. On two of those occasions I will be have a companion.
This simply isn't in the same league as Finstock or Combe station near where I live in Oxfordshire. Acton mainline is, in comparison, buzzing with life.
nb. close to that station is the office of a man who was found to be exporting pharmaceutical drugs for lethal injections used in Arizona for executing inmates on death row. He was operating from the buildings of a driving school. An interesting sideline.
