You're absolutely right, everyone here deserves credit for being amazing and talented musicians. I think where the whole Jill thing comes in is that the band's popularity kinda blew up after she became a member... probably not in small part due to the fact that a metal band with a violinist is different. Although many UM fans will mention Jill often, I'm sure they'll all agree that Fuki is one of the hardest working vocalists in J-metal, Shiren is a virtuoso on guitar and an amazing composer, Jinya is also a very talented guitarist, Ogawa is a terrific bassist in both metal and jazz, and Fumiya the drummer is most likely not human to play the way he does.
Fans may mention Jill more often than the rest of the band, but the other members do so also. When they did their album as Quadratum without Fuki and Shiren, the title was "Loud Playing Workshop". The band joked that it was actually "Jill Promotion Workshop". So I doubt it bothers them much.

The one person that does not like the "Jill Promotion Workshop" is Jill, and I think that's why the band do it, to tease her.

I would even go as far as to say that this is Shiren's (guitarist stage left/screen right) and Fuki's (vocalist) band, they were a 2-piece originally and played together for years before the others came in. I believe Jil joined last of all of them (although she played with them as a guest before). But yes, all 6 of them are very good musicians without a doubt. I think most people who chant about Jill (like I have done as well in the past) see how good all the others are as well, it's just that Jill is very unique and an easy name to remember.
I love Fumiya as a drummer, he is very tight for the speed he plays and has shown in the past that he can play different styles (with UM and Galneryus, I haven't checked out his work with other bands). Owaga is a great bassist, he is a jazz bassist from what I have read and while he can be somewhat overpowered with 2 guitars and a violin next to him, you can see and hear he is very talented. Jinya is also an amazing guitar player in his own right, you can clearly hear it in this track and in many others.
And for everyone who thinks that only Jill is worth mentioning in this band and doesn't see the musicianship of the others, I would point them to the live version of their cover of The Dance of Eternity by Dream Theater which they did in front of an audience during at least one of their shows. I don't think you can get through this track live without being amazing musicians. That only leaves the original 2 Shiren and Fuki as they aren't involved in that cover, but there is plenty of evidence in other tracks that they are amazing at what they do as well.

That live performance is quite high up the queue, hopefully we'll see it in the next 6 months.

Thanks for the great request and reaction. I love Unlucky Morpheus, especially seeing them live. They are amazing performers, incredibly tight as a band. It's so satisfying and entertaining that anyone can take the spotlight at any time, and then someone else takes over from the left and right, back and forth. Having said that, I never thought I would love a violinist in a heavy metal band until I saw Jill. I've been a metalhead, attending many different bands' concerts, but now when I see Unlucky Morpheus live, I find myself right in front of Jill. Everyone knows she plays incredibly, but I also adore her showmanship. She's such a badass. 🤘

The name of the vocalist is Fuyuki Tenge (FUKI) 🤘She and guitarist, composer and producer Shiren founded the band, that they are describing as ,,Technical Melodic Speed Metal”

I don't disagree that the whole band should be recognised, but then again, Jill is the only one who's name you've remembered😉🤣

I actually didn't notice the vibrato much until you pointed it out. 😆Unfortunately, after that the frequency of it (of its use, not sonic frequency) was a little distracting.
Also, I've been curious about something, David. If part of a song has multiple feel changes with two to four measures each, but does that in a pattern (like in each verse or each pre-chorus, so it's consistent), do you think it would still be distracting?

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  Před rokem +1

It would depend on the tempo. If it's a really fast song, and the changes fly by without giving the listener a chance to even identify the pattern or get into the groove of it, it is a big distraction in my opinion. If the tempo is slow enough to catch on to the pattern and get into the groove of the pattern, then personally I find it much more enjoyable.

OK the rant. I totally agree with you about what you said, but as someone who maybe a bit guilty of pushing Jill to the front, let me just say that I do also think the other members are as good.
The rest of the band are some of the best out there. I could go on about Fuki, but there are a lot of people that do not like the vibrato she does, personally I love it, and think the range of it is a bit unique in rock/metal, but there is no point saying how great Fuki is, to someone that does not like the way that she sings.
Shiren and Jinya, they both have to be in the top 10 guitarists in Japan, but that is subjective, depending on what you like and look for.
Ogawa on bass, is another that maybe one of the best in Japan, and not far behind BOH. But he suffers with what most bassist suffer with, pushed to the back and overlooked by people, for the guitarists.
Fumiya is a beast behind the drum kit, and again maybe one of the best out there.
The thing is that nearly every band has one of these, and depending on taste, where they'd be ranked. Some band may have one or 2 members that stand out, normally the guitarist and the singer. But Unlucky Morpheus also have Jill, something that is pretty unique, and she does add something to the band, which you can tell, if you ever here any of the re-recorded songs they have done to include Jill in them. And because there is not really any others to compare Jill to, it's not subjective to taste of who is the better.
But Unlucky Morpheus are not the only ones that suffer with the problem of 1 member being pushed over the others. Take Nightwish, everyone raves about Floor, it's not Floor and her band, it's Nightwish. Disturbed and David Draiman, Galneryus and Syu (Fumiya was a member for a few years), Band Maid it's either Misa or Kanami and I could go on.
As humans we tend to point out the major selling points of a band, be it what ever member of the band it is, and Jill just happens to be that person for Unlucky Morpheus. And like with the other bands, if the other members were not any good, we would not be talking about the members that stand out, or make the band unique.

I think David for the most part likes her singing (power, projection, range, etc) the only thing he criticizes is the vibrato, that's the only complaint I can remember from the multiple times he reacted to not only Unlucky Morpheus, but also Light Bringer and Doll$boxx. It depends on the song/performance I guess.

    • @BeccaVinesz
      @BeccaVinesz Před měsícem

Honestly I kinda disagree with that, it’s true that guitarists for example are pushed over but even Syu said that as much as everyone believes 1 member sell the band is false in nature, instead he says even if ofc he as a guitarist wants to stand out but the singer should be the main communicator & focus, with everyone having fair recognition, & SHO is probably the strongest representator of Galneryus in reality despite Syu being frequently mentioned.

First things first, thanks for reacting to this song and I'm glad you dug it, David.
Doing so many bands can't be easy to remember names even of bands you've reacted to multiple times. Maybe people repeated Jill's name a lot not just because she's a genius musician but to make sure you remember her name (it also worked with MISA and Miho for a lot of people). I'll try and help again with the names you don't know or don't remember
    -----------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------------
Fuki - She's the vocalist, also the vocalist of Light Bringer, Doll$boxx, Fuki Commune, Dragon Guardian and many other past projects.
Out of every member in this band, you reacted to her the most in the channel(Light Bringer, Doll$boxx and Unlucky Morpheus are the bands with her that you covered so far).
Just try to remember whenever you're doing Unlucky Morpheus/Light Bringer/Doll$boxx reactions that the vocalist is the same person and the name is:
Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki Fuki 😆.
Fuki Commune is self explanatory by the name of the band(her solo project) and whenever there's something in the queue saying "featuring Fuki", that's her as well.
    -----------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Now for the gentlemen
Shiren - Purple guitar player that also does vocals sometimes (growling but also clean style). He founded the band alongside Fuki. He has also played in many bands like Undead Corporation (played for both Unlucky Morpheus and Undead Corporation at the same time till 2015), Icaru's Cry, Babymetal and many others.
Jinya - The other guitar player, he also played in other bands including Undead Corporation
Ogawa - The bass player. Jazz background, was the only member from the band that wasn't into metal before.
Fumiya - The drummer. One of the very best and you've seen him in some Galneryus songs. He was playing in Galneryus and UM at the same time from 2016 till 2020.
