And DON'T forget Kristen Dunst. She turned down the role of Penny. Actually, her Parents coaxed her out of it. Because they didn't like David Kellogg the director. He Made Cool as Ice.
Steve Carrel would've KILLED it as Gadget. It's a shame this movie turned out the way it did. I have fond memories of it as a kid, but going back, it just doesn't hold up. Far, far too whacky, even for an adaptation of a cartoon. The show was over the top, but also respected kid's intelligence enough and had Penny playin the role of the hero moreso than Gadget. If they reboot it, I'd love to see John Mullany in the title role.
You can tell the original cut of the film would have been slightly darker, possibly based more on the source material from the cartoon series - even the music in this trailer is pretty different than what was used as background music in the theatrical release. A live-action recreation of the cartoon series intro sequence would have been hilarious with Broderick's Gadget!
I dunno if I'd say it would be more in line with the source material, considering it still gets a lot of core elements from both in terms of how they are physically represented, and how they are written compared to the cartoon.

Inspector Gadget... Which features an origins story, duplicate Gadget gimick, and Dr. Claw's face? Just...why? Seriously, Dr. Claw was sinister and intimidating, being just as mysterous as he was menacing. He did not have a claw hand, and his voice sounded like Tony Danza ODed on Testosterone shots injected directly into his voibox after smoking 5 cartons of cheap cigarettes. Also, while the Gadget Mobile is cool, Dr. Claw has probably the best vehicles of all time: It's a car, a submarine, or a jet, has Air to Surface, Air to Air Missiles, forward and aft torpedo lauchers, on board global communcations, and interior seating fit for a high end gentleman's club, even if it was just for his cat. Penny is barely featured, even though she is a main character in the show, essential to the plot. Age wise can be adjusted of course, but she was blonde in the show, and hair dye is not too pricy for Hollywood. Her watch and Computer Book were the perfect ex-machina to wrap up plot problems too. Brain... Just... Poor Brain, another main character sidelined, despite that at least a third of every episode focused on Brain in his many disguises saving or being chased by Gadget. Would have been very entertaining to see some creativity bring that to a live action/CGI movie.
