The thing I think gets overlooked the most is just how much people compare Messi to out and out strikers and completely ignore all facets of Messi’s game that aren’t directly just sticking the ball in the net just for the sake of making the comparison
Can we honestly say the players he is compared to today have the same ball control, the same awareness of their teammates, the same vision to play the ball, the same range of passing and the ability to turn 4 players inside out when surrounded, it’s like that’s never factored into the conversations

    • @Tunde....Ballack

Yeah, that's why the whole comparison with Ronaldo exists. In a sense Messi is a victim of his own goalscoring exploits. Players like Zidane, Ronaldinho, even Maradona, didn't need to score huge amounts of goals to be considered right up there, but Messi more than matches and surpasses these players depending on the aspect of the game you're looking at. But the goal scoring is what will always be looked at.
Prime example was last season with PSG, where he had primarily his deepest ever position. If you ignored surface level stats, and look at stats for a midfielder, like progressive passes, progressive carries, chance creation, through ball, line breaking passes, passes into the final third and so on, he was in the 99TH percentile of all players in Europe. He got 14 assists in 26 games with Mbappe missing a lot of chances he created, BUT because his goal scoring was a measly 11, he was considered as finished.
Another example that very little people realize, by May 2011, while Messi was disassembling Fergie's United, he was so good, that he was already being compared to Pele and Maradona as one of the best ever, that EVEN GARY NEVILLE, was saying it at the time, that he might be the best ever. Messi only had 196 goals and 82 assists then.
Now since been compared as one of the best ever, since that match, Messi has had *_597 goals and 268 assists_* in _*11 seasons*_, counting this one as 1 full season. That is just BONKERS!!. It means since then he has averaged 78-79 goal contribution per season.
_*Just think about that. He's being considered as one of the best ever, then he goes and contributes 80 goals a season for 11 straight years, and he's still being question*_. Of course this is all outside the chances created, the dribbles, the trophies and so on, and so on. GOAT!!!!

@@nathanieltucker96 Ronaldo became a striker from his final 4 - 5 years at real madrid, but even at Real madrid in his starting years and Juve, he was a forward. Ronaldo does not like starting as a center forward, which is why his starting position is usually wide. He relies on the forward to occupy the defenders while he expertly attacks any space that opens up inside the box.
So while his starting position was out wide, and he did get involved out wide, make no mistake Ronaldo perhaps had even more touches inside the box than Benzema. And without a doubt, what elevated him in that conversation was his scoring ability which mostly stemmed from well inside the box.
He was never a match with Messi in the other aspects of the game, and please, don't bring up assists. Forwards that have great link-up play have the ability to rack up assists, especially if they are a high volume scorer like Ronaldo what that level of consistency, and world class link-up. You don't believe me? Scholes spent his entire LIFE in the premier league, playing from a rookie till he was a "grey" old man, and yet Peter Crouch has more premier league assists than he does. Does this make crouch a better creator or playmaker than Scholes?

Messi is the GOAT of Football, Usain Bolt for Sprints, MJ for Basketball etc, just leave it at that. Messi is the best footballer, in terms of maintaining a high standard for a long time, that I've seen playing in my lifetime. Maradona and R9 had short spells at the same level, but didn't maintain it for over a decade like Messi has. Based on statistics and hearsay, Pele may have been as good as Messi or even better, but based on the compilations available of the best goals, dribbles etc. of Pele and Messi, the video evidence suggests that Messi is better.
I wouldn't say that Messi is the best sportsman ever. Not even of his generation. Messi has pretty much been sharing Ballon D'Or awards and Champions League winner medals with Ronaldo for most of his career, whereas Michael Phelps won at least 4 gold medals at every single Olympic Games between 2004 and 2016, which is on a completely different planet in terms of dominance. Similar things could be said for sportsmen like Bolt, Jordan, Tendulkar, Federer at one point or another. Messi just happens to be the best at football, which is the most popular sport in the world, but if basketball or tennis were number 1 then I don't think anybody would be suggesting Messi might be the best sportsman because there are many other footballers who are only slightly behind him in terms of skills and achievement.

Why are we always talking about goals with Messi? Heard nobody said Modric is bad because he only scored 5 goals a season. Messi has it all and now he is more of a playmaker, he play passes nobody can do so frequently, he is the best dribbler ever, he will become the greatest goalscorer ever and he is not even a striker, he will not become the best defender ever but. He is the best in everything attacking wise and when you can't agree with that look at his statics. Guy scored 92 goals in a year and that are only the goals.... Also it's unfair to talk so much about national teams. The France b team is probably still the best quality wise. Haaland is not a bad striker because Norway is not qualified it's still a team sport and Messi always played more back in Argentina, because the lack of creativity in the midfield so he obviously scored less

People mistakenly think that soccer is the most competitive team sport but actually it is not but it is the most popular though. America is the biggest sports market in the world. The NBA is like taking all the best soccer teams from Europe and around the world and put them in one market and let them compete, so actually an NBA champion is actually a world champion.Furthermore an NBA final is more competitive than a soccer World Cup final because all the teams are based in one country with all the resources that money can buy unlike in soccer where you have so many countries involved with less than desirable levels of funding and investment. The NBA is the ultimate concentration of talent, talent is not spread across like in soccer, so if you’re tall, strong, skilful etc there’s only one destination for you no matter what part of the world you come from. The following things make the NBA more competitive than soccer:(1)the smallest NBA market has a budget that can’t be compared to the smallest soccer team in European Champions League or the smallest country in the World Cup.(2)America being the most advanced country in the world has the best infrastructure, logistics etc which can’t be compared to the soccer World Cup where you have very poor countries with small budgets that which constrains a lot of things like access to the best coaches etc (3) The NBA is like a World Cup competition with over 28 teams or the European Champions League but better because anyone from anywhere in the world who’s the best is in the same sports market (biggest in the world). So it is like having Christiano Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandoski, Mbape, etc in the same market (4) An NBA championship team has to sweep (win 5) or win (7), this format gives the other team(losing) all the opportunities in the world to comeback and get a win in the next match, so an NBA champion team is a well and truly tested team unlike in soccer where it is only one match, I wish it was the best of three matches (series). Can you imagine France vs Argentina in a three match series. (5) An NBA champion has to win a conference final which has a series of matches, to me this is like soccer’s Champions League or a World Cup Champion. There could be more reasons but those are the main reasons.

Nba is never as competitve as european soccer. And Nba is just a leabgue of usa. Soccer market is bigger than any other sport and is about 43% of the entire markets of all sports. And soccers number of players is the largest in all sports and comes from all around world. In addition to it soccer is the most popular. So soccer is the most competitive.
