I've always felt that its unfair for Ronaldo to be compared with Messi, one has God-given talent, the other is hardwork and discipline (which makes me appreciate Ronaldo more), but when it comes to what they offer on the pitch, Messi is waaay ahead of Ronaldo without even factoring in what both have achieved.
Ronaldo scores lots of goals because that is his only job. Messi scores just as many goals as a by-product of doing his real job.

In modern world cups they only score half the goals per game they did in the 1950s, in fact the goals per game in 2022 are still less than in 1966. The bad pitches and all the other poor science of those days hurt defenders much more than it hurt attackers. Defenders these days are so much fitter, faster and better organized. Go and have a look at the Maradona goal of the century and instead of watching Maradona, watch the "defending". It would be laugh out loud today, and would not be good enough from a pub team.

the reality is if you needed this final to decide, you don't know football. Messi has been clear of Ronaldo for a long time, a true artist with the ball and his vision. Ronaldo is good but a lot of his success was on the back of others. I never would have dreamt that something definitive could happen to end the Messi Vs Ronaldo debate. As of yesterday, he's the GOAT. All boxes are checked now. He needed a WC to surpass Maradona in the eyes of his countrymen and you have to have a WC to be in the upper echelon of the Pantheon. Messi's resumé, now complete with a WC, is superior to anyone else's.
For what they have both achieved in the game, they are both just incredible. But, for natural, raw footballing ability, technique and god given talent, Messi has always edged it. I am so glad that somebody else bought 'classical' composers to this discussion because Pele, Maradona and Messi all operated at vastly different times to each other.
The biggest indictment of Pele is that he played in the Brazilian league and not in Europe. If the economic landscape was then as it is today, we could say he was playing in a farmers league. However, Brazilian football was king in the mid-20th century. Money wasn't being spent on importing players as leagues tended to be quite homogenized in that era of time, so we will never know.
What can be said is that there would be no Maradona without Pele, and there would be no Messi/CR7 without either of them along with other greats like Cryuff, Best etc. And we will be saying this for Haaland and Mbappe when they reach the end of their race!

World Cup wins don’t define the greatest player, your club career does. You could be the best player of all time but born in Macedonia so have virtually zero chance of winning anything at international level. Pele never came to Europe and played it safe against sub standard teams in Brazil. The Brazil team Pele played in was by far the dominant team at the time with a team full of great players and didn’t have to carry the team like Messi did with Argentina. Plus, Pele only played the opening 2 games at the 1962 World Cup, so you can’t really give him 3 World Cup wins. Messi is the greatest no doubt.

I think C Ronaldo is a fantastic player. But he has campaigned to win Ballon D’Ors and to be recognised as the GOAT and this self promotion has worked to some degree and fuelled the debate of who is better Messi or Ronaldo. However, I have always felt that it is a false comparison, whilst Ronaldo is undoubtedly great, Messi is just on another level. He is the GOAT in my book and by some way and is a footballing genius (literally) in my opinion. Happy for people to make a case for CR7 to be in the top 5 best players ever, there are some good arguments for this, but he’s just miles behind Messi and lots of people would rank the likes of Maradona, Pele and even the Brazilian Ronaldo above him. Maybe he’s the second best player ever, maybe he’s the 4th or 5th?

Honestly this debate was over years ago. Just cause he's won the world cup does not mean he wasn't the best already. 17 years at this level of football is madness. I guess for those who were unsure, they are not anymore. The way Ronaldo acted does not mean he is not the best. He's not the best cause Messi exists, that's all. Best player should not have to do with a teams achievements. If any great player played for a low country team, they would have no chance of winning. There are many players who have been in very good teams who have many medals and trophies but it does not mean they are better than say Kane as an example because he hasn't really won anything.
There should be a criteria used for a individual and that should not include collective team efforts.
There are such criteria, and on those criteria, Messi is head and shoulders above anyone else who has ever played. But haters have been saying for years that he hasn't won a World Cup.

Messi and Ronaldo evolved as their pace dropped. I can't see mbappe having the same impact on games when he is in his 30s compared with Messi or Ronaldo until he left juventus.

Completely depends on what criteria you use to define greatest as is clear from the comments. I'm not sure Messi dragged an average team to glory time and again like Maradona did for club and country. On the flip side Messi has remained at his level well into his 30's whereas Maradona imploded due to lifestyle and company he kept.
CR7 is without doubt an incredible professional but I'm not sure he's a team player. He would have been better taking up an individual sport as his ego could start to tarnish his legacy.
There have been some amazing players that had huge impact on football beyond their playing career. Pele and Cruyff are just two that spring to mind.
In terms of the Messi Vs Ronaldo debate it's hard to argue for the latter when Messi has scored two goals in the world cup final. I can't see how Ronaldo can have any real impact in what career he has left.

During the timespan of Maradona's career, Argentina won four major international tournaments (2 WCs, 2 Copas) and Maradona was there for only one of them. Argentina won three major trophies without him, so it is just utter nonsense the way people claim they could do nothing without him. If you want to see an ordinary argentine team, look at them in 2014. Di Maria and Aguero both missing, and Higuaín as striker ffs. Or 2010 with Maradona as manager.

@@fk4410 You can make stats work for any argument you want to make. I agree that previous Argentina teams had some star players. They didn't have the long winning run that this side has had. Also when Maradona played the opposition was stronger (currently no strong Germany and Italy for example).
As to Champions League and domestic trophies Messi did it at one club only. The Spanish league is a 2 club league with Athletico Madrid doing wonders to stay with the big two. Winning the Italian league with Napoli was a much bigger achievement than Barcelona winning something. Messi has not won the Champions League for PSG. Ironically the French league being weak is what's helped Messi be fresh for this world cup.

No. Maradonna quite literally pulled Argentina through to the World Cup with his exploits on the field. Messi quite honestly played well and at times very well, but not on the level that Maradonna did.

And he played in an era when defenders were allowed to do more and weren’t limited with all the diva diving today and soft play.
