Diego Maradona Tells Pele That Lionel Messi "Has No Personality" & Lacks Leadership

  • Pele and Maradona caused a stir at the Match of Friendship in Paris, France on Thursday (9th June) as they were overheard making less than flattering remarks about Lionel Messi.
Their personal feud might be over, but Diego Maradona and Pele might have just started another with no less a footballing figure than Lionel Messi.
The pair took part in a pre-Euro 2016 event in Paris on Friday called the 'Match of Friendship'.
But it's doubtful whether either will be receiving any friendly messages from the Barcelona and Argentina superstar for a while.
Unaware that their microphones were turned on, they were overheard describing Messi as 'lacking personality' and 'without leadership qualities' as they were waiting for the teams to walk out.
Maradona and Pele were involved in a bitter spat in 2000 after FIFA ran an online poll asking fans to pick their footballer of the 20th century.
Maradona easily won the vote, but FIFA thought the result was skewed too heavily towards younger fans and assembled an international jury to decide the issue.
They backed Pele, and that caused such a protest that FIFA were forced to split the award.
They named Pele and Maradona jointly as the two greatest players of all time.
"Pele won by forfeit," Maradona said at the time. "I had the vote of the people".
Angelo Peruzzi, Rio Ferdinand and Clarence Seedorf were among the list of former players to feature in Friday's kickabout.
For the record, Maradona netted twice, once from the spot and with the final kick of the game to make the result a diplomatic 8-8 draw.
Pele didn't take part in the game itself as he continues to recover from hip surgery.

Just for the record: The joke made by Pelé in the first sentence went unnoticed by Maradona, because he mixed Portuguese and Spanish. Pelé avoids touching Maradona's hand and says "they're going to say we have an affair". Priceless.

Game was rigged for Messi to win bro. Fifa wanted the clean boy scout Messi to win in order for his popularity to outshine the controversy of the Qatar World Cup. Look at all those "penalties" given to Argentina in all 3 games: Netherlands, Croatia, and France. Not a coincidence that all those penalties were extremely controversial. Not a single one clean. Referees didn't even check the Var, which is what made me realize what was going on. Even the Qatar leaders and Fifa president have said that Messi needed to win. And let's not get started on the fact that Messi already had a close relationship with Qatar (Barcelona/Qatar airlines and the fact Messi got paid millions for being a sponsor in Qatar in 2015). Holy sh%t

messi’s personality is introverted and yes it may not be fitting for a leadership role. but there can be silent but deadly leaders. leaders who lead by example and rather give instruction by explanation rather than shouting a whole bunch. messi has earned the respect of argentina and they will play for their country and their captain. and we’ve seen many times moments where messi gives talks at halftime or before the game to his mates and during the game he’d tell instructions to teammates individually. he has the ability to lead without leaving his introverted state. on the flip side you have great leaders like henderson who lead by words and motivation. both are effective depending on what kind of personality you have

personality is whats depicted as being loud and talkative, basically an extrovert. Messi is the opposite, he is an introvert - he doesnt seem loud or talkative, introverts by nature are quieter and listen more than they speak. they are more guarded and reserved around people that they dont know much - but are completely like an extrovert with people they know and family , so being loud with personality all the time is not necessarily what makes a good captain. Look at him now what a great leader he has become. His speeches during matches, the brotherhood he developed between Argentina players, if Maradona saw Messi today he'd cry with happiness. He developed himself to become Argentina's most successful leader with 3 international trophies including the world cup. Some people thought he's not a leader because of his silent emotional personality. Don't judge the book by its cover. He's a silent beast who pushed the team to the top of the world encouraging them constantly even after the loss of first match. He stands up for his team. His teammates love their captain so much. They'd go to war for him. Congrats world champion leo! 🏆🐐❤️

You made authority for yourselft, why you putting your authority and nostalgia above current players. There are now so many decent defender, there are so many great teams with great tactics so no matter how good you are without of team you would not do anything. Messi's dribbiling, vision, passes, shots are better than Maradona. Prime Messi changed the flow of the whole game hundreds of time. He played agains more skilled defenders, against much stronger teams, and he proving for 15 years that he is alien, even bunch of ducks in Argentina won Copa America, Maradon didn't. Before that they reached Copa America finals two times, and reached WC final. If Messi scored some goal in 2014 finale would it make for you difference ? And you would say that he as good as Maradona ? Hypocrite. Titles are too overrated for you. To win title you need good chemistry in the team, and bunch of luck. If they had luck enough to win Germany, you would say now different things lol ? One random goal separates you from calling Messi is at least equal to Maradona? You are ignorant. Messi did so many great things, I only judge by playing, Messi is playing much better than anybody else. I can only put prime R9 with Messi, no one else reached that level. And you judging only respecting authorities. If we follow your logic then Pele was a goat too? Pele was mediocre played, he scored a lot of goals, but he was not even 1/4 of Messi and 1/2 of Maradona. Mane Garrincha which of nobody talking about made more impact to Brazil winning WC than PELE. Continue to dream in your world of the past. Yeah it's always will be like that, dudes can't grow up and praising football players, cars, medicine, times only of the pasts. it is hard to define a leader. in spite of being an introvert, like most talented personalities are, he motivates and inspires players not only of his team, but also of others in general. this, to me , is a real leader. He may not shout and energize his teammates in the conventional way, but he does so subtly non the less.
its my belief that if he tries to become a "conventional" leader , then his play/ talent may get effected. as the saying goes, creativity thrives in solitude.
so i guess it is wrong to say Messi is not a leader, when he has influenced many footballers and non footballers around the globe than any other "conventional" leader

Says a guy who obviously never played competitive football before. That can work with your mates in a classroom or a lab (mayyybe), but not because its a good way to lead but because in general academians can be more understanding of such personalities. When you are in the heat of a big world cup game then show me your "creativity thrives in solitude".
You see it as if he needs to give up some of his energy and creativity to lead the team, but the fact is that he's giving up the fighting and team spirit for that extra "creativity". Maradona was someone who knew what it took to win on the biggest stage and did it anyway even if he looked less "aesthetic" than Messi. New amateur fans get fooled by this and intrepret it as if Messi has more talent on the ball than Maradona, but trust me Maradona could do things with the ball that noone could ever do.
