- Cognition Labs just unveiled a new AI coding tool called Devin that is designed to automate the job of software engineers. Let's take a first look at Devin and see if it is a truly powerful tool or just artificial intelligence hype.

I'm in the software engineering field. My managers are pretty on top of AI Development as well as our director. (I work in the FAANG). I was sitting with my manager at lunch yesterday talking about whether or not Devin will get good enough to replace an actual person, and he said: "Nah, there definitely needs to be a human element when you develop software, you're not going anywhere. But [DIRECTOR] is convinced we should replace everyone below management with Devin-likes. It makes sense, absolutely little to no cost for maybe-quality engineering. All you'd need is just one dude with an ass in the seat to go over and verify the code and you can knock out 95% Of software engineers."
I've been in my job for like, 5 years now. Guess it's time to pick up a trade instead of tech cause it's clear to me this shit is a dead end.
Interesting. What exactly is the point of having managers if you have nobody to manage. That that point, what is even the point of having HR if there are no humans. All of this is unrealistic.

@@unlegitdev I have one and it works great. I didn't enjoy being the slave of the lawn.
It's funny how people not too long ago said AI will never be able to do this or that, and even if so it is decades away from being able to do it. It was obviously going to blow up quickly, since new AI tech can help make new and better AI tech. Like other say, it is basically exponential. It is coming for ~98% of jobs, and the few it won't take are mostly just the jobs running the AI's and probably a few outlier jobs, but most AI/androids will be able to do even some of the outlier jobs if not all of them. It took Sora and Devin for people to finally wake up, and even then some people I'm sure are still denying it. Most people can barely even imagine what will happen in a week, or even that day, so no surprise they can't comprehend something as complex as artificial intelligence.
yea nah, humans in the west rn are expensive but versatile. Any machine you make can usually only does 1 thing, a hammer hammers nails, an assembling machine assembles small parts, chatgpt writes and dall-e draws. The amount of money you have to spent to develop and produce just one machine can be ridiculous. Meanwhile humans can do pretty much anything with the right education. That’s why humans still stock shelves, better to spent just a lil money every month instead of bankrupting the company for a machine that may not even work.
And this rule only applies in the west… In other places where the worth of human life can be measured in single digit numbers it’s straight up cheaper to work humans to death than buy a machine. An example I heard was of a south african woman who was asked why she didn’t have a washing machine, her response: “My maid can do that.”
@@forkstaf1918 You do realize technology becomes cheaper over time, right? Your point is true now, but eventually tech will be so advanced that the things that are worth thousands or millions now will be a fraction of the price. Then eventually there will be companies that release high tech, like cheap androids (to us now it is high tech, for them then it will be the bottom of the barrel, they'll even be people bullying others for not having the advanced android version), for mere hundreds that are built to do many tasks. Technology is already starting to outpace us. Once it is advanced in many sectors, companies will start merging those together to create AI/androids that are capable of many, many things. Like, why does an AI have to be limited to doing one task? It doesn't. The only thing stopping it from doing other tasks is missing code. Not even far in the future there will be an AI that can answer "any" question, draw any picture, create any song, etc. This is only the infancy. When television first came out it had a few channels, but now look at it. It can have hundreds. Look at phones. They could only call people, but now you can use a browser to look up anything that exists on said browser, you can take pictures, video, play games, mod the hell out of it if you have the knack for it, etc. That doesn't look like one or two tasks, now does it? You're being narrow-minded and not thinking enough about how things will work long-term. It is always advancing, so to judge it now in the way you are is idiotic, or incredibly ignorant. All tech in its infancy is limited, but branches out more and more as it advances.

intelligence has always had value. it is the most valuable thing. it doesn't get replaced, you just aren't being intelligent enough. "brain strength" (storing a lot of information and procedures in your head) is not the same thing as real intelligence

I think even plumber and stuff is automatable

@@ayoCC Well, politics and courts are very automatable and it's been in the work for a long time. Russia literally has been pumping money into AI since a lot earlier than the hype, most likely to train a model of a Putin successor which is more efficient and can function after a dictator's death :)
The first thing humans invented was a tool to save labor. Humanity is marked by it's want to do less work. More results for less effort and risk.

Why crush grain with a rock if you can make an animal walk a circle a few times for 1000x the yield?

Of course devs are friends. Most art are digital these days. A lot of times artists and devs work closely together, like UXUI in frontend dev, etc, they just never realised they needed each other. Some devs have a very condescending attitude to artists. Of course, there's some of us who dual wield art and code like archay, like me. We know. The project manager has been replaced.
Yes, but Devin writes the whole thing in under a day, they identify what’s wrong and update the requirements and within the project schedule end up with something workable. - and that’s without reclassifying the project as research so they can spin up the next project as implementation, which gets reclassified as implementation phase 1…… etc.
