- Ben "From Canada" Chinapen is back with a look at Moneyball 2011. You know that movie that's about baseball but it's actually about statistics but don't worry it's not boring . He breaks down what makes this such an inspiring and well crafted narrative piece and why the performances including Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill are so great. He also does it in a way that only he knows how. By making a good video. Thanks for watching.

#Moneyball #BradPitt - Zábava
I’m actually working on another video arguing against the merits of Moneyball in the interest of being fair and balanced. It’s mostly about how there should be a space between Money and Ball.
That is a pretty big issue ? How can you watch a something with such a big error in the title Mr *.* Sunday Movies
Please don’t use the word “Slaps” outside of referring to music. Especially in a movie set in Oakland lol it’s disrespectful to the culture.
@@JonahEKoh nobody cares about Oakland culture except the people in Oakland. Maybe Richmond. And only some of them.

I don't get metaphors. They go over my head. My reflexes are too slow to catch them.
the movie show that he fail badly... just get good point but never win the championship...
@@campkira Because the mathematical system only works over a larger number of contests. Playoffs/World Series are a minute fraction (best 3/5 or 4/7 games) of a full baseball season (162 games) and thus far more subject to variables and randomness. It's like flipping a coin - flip it 162 times, and you're guaranteed to come up with a number close to 81 heads and 81 tails, but flip it 3 to 7 times, and it could come up heads or tails every time. In general, playoff and WS winners are dictated as much by chance as mathematical consistency.
I know it's a metaphor.

I very much understand. It's a super boring movie if you do not fundamentally relate with Brad Pitt from scene 1 onwards.
......who is Ben? How long has he been lurking in the shadows of this hilarious channel patiently waiting to garner more fans of Moneyball?
baseballl movie..
Can we also add how underrated of an actor Jonah Hill is? He is absolutely right about every character being great. But Jonah adds another level that is so relatable.
it's because jonah hill seems so normal and completely in character that it's easy to forget he's just playing a role. honestly one of his best performances
One of my favorite parts about this movie is that you see Brad Pitt's character change the way he does things. In the beginning he talks about not getting too close with the players so that they're easier to cut, but as the movie goes on he realizes he needs to change the way he does things too and he gets closer with his players. You can really see it in the scene where he has to cut somebody and you can tell it hurts him to do it.
The Streak montage is one of the best scenes in all of film. I get goosebumps every damn time.

Its such a great movie. It's funny how many of my favorite films are about baseball, yet I haven't watched it since the 80s.
I'm not sure why but this movie at the end makes me ball my eyes out knowing the fact that the money wasn't the issue and loving being in Oakland was him. the fact that he never won makes it that more emotional for me and it is undoubtedly my favorite sports film.
I’m baffled someone who refers to a “run” as a “point” loves this movie.
that triggered me
I think you're missing the run here.
@@RoryGlynn the main thing is that after the point, he went all the way to the end and got a touchdown!
In case you missed it, Ben doesn’t follow baseball.
I never watched a full baseball game in my life and I loved the movie when I saw it he describes why perfectly it's an underdog story that's real and shows how change is necessary and just sticking to the old ways can just lead to the rich getting richer.
"I made one decision in my life based on money. And I swore I would never do it again."
that one touched me, but the jonah hill line after was an absolute master piece, "you're not doing it for the money. you're doing it for what the money says. and it says what it says to any player that gets paid big money. that you're worth it....."
The best thing in youtube, is people being hype about things they love.
its amazing
i'm gonna watch this movie
Well said 🙂
As someone that doesn’t know much about baseball, Moneyball is one of my favourite movies ever
As a life long Bay Area baseball fan, let me tell you this movie fails at showing us who Billy Beane actually is. This movie makes him out to be a crusader for the little guy, when in reality he's a hard nosed businessman who puts money before winning every time. There's a reason why the poorer teams keep their payrolls low, so they can collect the checks from the collective bargaining agreement. If they spent more, they would get less subsidies and that would effect revenue stream. It's no secret, the poor teams choose to stay poor teams, all so they can play the poor old me card. Shit, the Giants spend tons of money and haven't had a good team in years.
seems like people who don't like baseball like this movie
@@SteefPip which is why Oakland was the first team to stop paying minor league players.
Ben, James should be paying you a lot of money.
Or at least some money.
Or pay him in "BALLS"?
I mean, he’s worth $900,000. He can spare it
Or AT LEAST let him out of his dungeon every once in a while.....

Thought the same thing! Haha
I corrected him every time he said it
I cringe when I hear “point” or “points” mentioned.
However, Thanks for the video. Great job 😁
I feel that is more to make things accessible to a non-fan of baseball. And the statistics they use to value a player dont just equal runs.
@@DCVM93 I think non-baseball fans can understand the concept of runs pretty easily. And I know plenty about how sabermetrics are used, but he specifically said that they use them to determine which players score the most points (in reference to runs) and nothing else in sabermetrics is referred to as "points". I wasn't correcting him or anything, it just amused me as a baseball fan.
"You know how the MLB works, it's rigged, some teams have more money than others"
Thank God this man has no idea how European football works....
there's a reason Mexico refuses to sell any good players to Europe
As a baseball and european football fan, and a fan of a big market baseball team and a smaller European team, I think baseball is much worse. At least with european football teams that can't win the championship still have something to compete for by trying not to get relegated. Small market baseball teams, like some european football teams, will wander in the proverbial desert for years, with no true direction. The one good thing about baseball though is that small market franchises can sometimes win it all, like the Kansas City Royals in 2015, and it's more likely than a team like Leicester winning the prem.
The fact that this movie straight up doesn't exist in Australia
He’s also wrong Oakland is a huge market, it’s just the owners refused to spend money and keep their players
@@LearnedSophistryIs it really though? The bay area has two teams. Oakland by itself is a pretty small city. The metropolitan area itself may be an argument but out of markets with two teams Chicago would rank right above it with almost twice the population.

Great line. Love the West Wing.
Perfect review of the film, you broke everything down perfectly. This film also showcases just how damn good Brad Pitt can be if he's trying.

Ok, ok, you've convinced me; I'll give this one a spin. Never been a "sports movie" kinda guy, so I'd have a natural inclination to give this one a wide berth.
Good job, Ben. We love you too.
It's well worth it! I'd also recommend Coach Carter and The Blind Side as two other sports movies which are good without knowing anything about the sport.
It's worth a watch
Warrior is the Best Sports movie imo..
Also not a Sports Movie kinda guy, but I loved Moneyball the first time I saw it.
I think you can enjoy anything when someone passionately explains why something they love is so good
“sports movie” is a very specific type of movie. While moneyball has the underdog trope going for it in that category and of course baseball being the crux of the story it’s not the same feel good story that most sport movies go for that is derived from the demographics existing love of sports.
I love this movie for many of the same reasons, and it's really cool that someone who doesnt like baseball likes this movie too.
HOWEVER....the fact that the movie painted Art Howe as a villain and completely left out that the A's had the AL MVP and three dominant starters on the team is a crime that cannot be ignored
It's drama. There had to be some conflict. If everyone was portrayed as going along with it, the movie wouldn't be as good. I have to think Art was involved with the process of moving towards a more stat-based team and having to play the players even though it might not have made sense. But who knows. Art was not a great manager, overall.
Yeah but I'm glad it's a little inaccurate. The things this film are trying to tell us wouldn't be as inspiring or strong if they told the more realistic story.
Art Howe was very hurt by the way he was portrayed. That is just plain wrong.
“Scores the winning point” Damn this guy really doesn’t watch baseball
GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLL!!!
1 run = 1 point.
Stop looking for things to get mad about. Points and runs are synonymous

@Alexander Supertramp I lost brain cells reading this
This is now probably one of my favorite film analyses I’ve ever seen
@SchafrillasProductions does some great analyses, too. Particularly Ratatouille and MegaMind
Paused the video halfway through to watch the movie, my eyes are now wet and i'm thinking about my own future and how much i should love the work i'm putting into my own dream, even if it feels extremely shitty now and i'm an endless ocean away from it.
This is one of the finer movies i've seen that most certainly deserves the prestigeous 10/10 score.
If a movie about baseball can make you appreciate the mundane then it's not really a movie about baseball at all, it's a movie about accepting life and the struggles in it.. by playing baseball!
I'm just a loser that didn't enjoy the ride!
I stopped this video around halfway and watched the movie too.
For me, I have never enjoyed the mundane challenges to reach a goal and have often looked for a shortcut or even an out. My life has dramatically changed lately and so will my attitude.
That’s why I and many Americans love baseball (obviously it’s fine if you don’t). It’s because it’s sort of a symbol of our childhoods- not because it’s always fun to watch (I’ve seen some boring games). I learned a lot of the lessons that made me who I am on the field, and met my friends there too. Money Ball is just a good allegory for the sort of lessons you could learn on the field or in any struggle.
If you don't cry during a great inspirational movie you're not human
@@rubbl3797 I didn't cry. Not because it wasn't inspiring or plays with the emotions. The reason why I didn't cry because it was a dramatic movie based on history. I am more watching the acting, scene placement and score. This movie still made me feel emotional even though it was a known outcome for the movie, now that for me is a masterpiece of movie making.
The Oakland A’s are my team even though they let me down time and time again this movie brings me back to those days when people had to appreciate what was going on in Oakland.
Yup, love my Chokeland A's! But hey we haven't lost a game this year!
This was our year 😢
Same. Even today's teams are constructed the same way and it gets us a first round playoff exit every time. It's starting to grow really stale, but when they first found this formula it was amazing and its amazing they still have as good of teams as they do even today
I'm from New Hampshire and therefore when this was going on I was a huge Red Sox fan waiting for us to break the curse. I didn't know anything about Billy Beane or what he was up to with the Oakland A's I just remember when we got Theo Epstein and made some big changes and it was revolutionary and ended the curse. So Moneyball has a special place in my heart too because it explains how the Red Sox finally did it. That ending is so prophetic. Of all the Baseball Professionals that thought Billy Beane was a joke, the Red Sox ownership understood exactly what he had done. He changed baseball forever.
“It’s not a cool movie to love, but it’s given me THE most value of any film” this is exactly why it’s been my favorite film of all time.

I'm a Mariners fan, and I sat back in amazement, with my hear in my hands. I love this movie, but it doesn't mention that the team was built mostly from scouting and their system. They never or barely mention Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Chavez, or Tejada. The part of the movie where the scout says, "we will teach them to play Oakland A's baseball" makes a lot of sense.

Definitely my favorite /sports/ movie. I thought the writing and directing felt very natural, especially when people speak over each other. I thought leaving takes like that in was a very interesting choice; in any other movie those would have been cut because they're not perfect, but that's how real conversations happen: you don't know everyone's line in real life.
I watched this film recently, and whilst I love sport, I have never been interested in baseball. But between the performances, the music and emotion, this movie was fucking amazing. 10/10, Pitt, Hill and Pratt are all awesome. The system also sought of works for many other sports. The use of the Might Rio Grande is fucking awesome. I love when Hill goes "I don't why I just lied there" XD

LOVED that film!), but mostly the meta viewpoint was just terrific. I got as emotional just listening to the themes you were revealing as I do watching the movie. Inspiring perspective. Thank you again!
Another interesting fact is that when he starts playing first base he's wearing an infielder glove, not a first base glove. Further highlighting that he's new to that position.
Bennnnnnn you are my dude!!!!! I can’t give this movie enough praise, everyone gives me shit about it but it’s my absolute favorite sports movie in the history of time. Good review bud 👌🏻
this was really good. and deep man. i mean you really see it all as a whole and with all its intricacies and depths beyond what i've ever experienced in a movie. I need to go watch this show again
Bloody good analysis! I continue to be drawn to this movie, for all the the reasons you mentioned and more, including the statistics! This movie actually inspires me.
