- Reboots get a bad rap due to often being not good all of the time. But not all the time! Every now and then one really hits so we thought we'd add some of the best some of the best. We're talking the MCU Spider-Man, Star Trek 2009, X-Men: First Class, Man Of Steel, Godzilla, Dredd, Dune, Mission Impossible, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and more. Thanks for watching

James must be high on carbonated drink if he forgot The Mask of Zorro
It's so good it transcends being ranked.
you beat me to it.
That one is kind of a legacy sequel tho since it focuses on a new character taking on the mantle of Zorro, while the original Zorro plays more of a mentor role
@@centy64 It is double S, just like CZJ in that movie
To many Kombucha
Bumping down Batman Begins for the voice and Mission: Impossible for the hair is a classic move from the boys 😂
*RACHEL* , *I'M BATMAN*
Especially considering Bale didn’t have the stupid voice until TDK😂
I know it's bait and yet Batman Begins and the fucking drek that is Man of Steel in the same tier properly infuriated me for like half the video. Well done James and Maso!
@@nickhatesyoutubechangescasually saying “Batman Begins is just as good as Dark Knight” almost had me ready to type a comment. The rage baiting is strong in these boys.
@@paliboy93 That's insane... Begins is miles better.
The fact the editor needs a 'they forgot to rank it' box every time makes me laugh som much.
so much respect for karl urban for not taking the helmet off. that's true dedication to the craft
Dredd isn't a reboot. It's a new adaption of the comic. Stallone wanted to keep the helmet on too but his contract and the studio wouldn't let him.
@@scottneil1187 no shade on stallone, but i can't imagine most actors would be ok with not showing their face for an entire movie. the props go to urban as well as the filmmakers
@@ogtothat’s one reason I really love The Batman. Sure Pattinson has a couple scenes as just Bruce, but for the majority of that movie, he has the cowl on. Compared to any of the Spider-Man films where Peter had to take his mask off constantly
Yeah its marvelous that he never took it off. The CGI head replacement for The Boys is flawless you cant even tell. Truly dedicated that man.
@@Luke101 Even when he doesn't have the cowl he's often still covering his face
you know what would be a great reboot? me calling James old in the comments again, since he doesn't seem to read the comments anymore and there's no way it'd bother him. If there's no objections to this, I will proceed with this stellar reboot!
Like the beach?
@@gregc8831He must've gone there, yeah.
I like how they put I Am Legend on the Good Reboot list as a little joke.
I am legend is a fine movie
I was incredibly disappointed that the main character's name wasn't actually "Legend." Just complete false advertising.
@@JonnyBefullIt is a fine movie and a horrific adaptation of the source material. The Novella is good throughout but it is the ending that defines it. Then they threw that in the garbage. The CGI creatures also undermine the movie to some degree. They looked distractingly bad when it was released. But the “sole survivor” Will Smith section would have made for a nice movie on its own but makes for an underwhelming adaptation of I Am Legend.
dredd is an easy s-tier for me, recently rewatched it and goddamn that film still slaps so hard.
CASINO ROYALE is the best James Bond MOVIE, but it is by no means the best JAMES BOND movie. This makes perfect sense in my head.
I don’t get it
@@ketgalait’s the best movie in the James Bond franchise , but it’s not very “James bond”
In the same way the dark knight is the best Batman MOVIE, but the Batman is the best BATMAN movie
@@awsomeman350 Close, but not quite what I'm trying to say. When I first saw CASINO ROYALE in the theater, I leaned over to my brother and whispered, "This is a *real movie!*", and he immediately knew what I meant. It took itself seriously. It was written and directed like an actual film for grown-ups. James Bond was a human being. It was just a great film, regardless of its being a Bond movie.
The first James Bond movie I ever saw in a theater was OCTOPUSSY, so Roger Moore is my OG Bond and always will be. Those were big, bombastic, silly, borderline screwball films that had their own vibe. Nothing hit like a James Bond movie in the 70s and 80s, they were just silly, lunatic fun. CASINO ROYALE is spectacularly good, but it will never charm and delight me the way the pre-Craig franchise could. That's all I meant.
@@CDMVIDZ yeah that’s what I just said
The editing is great but I have to disagree with Laurence. They ranked Godzilla. They said that “the next one is an F” and the next one was Godzilla and they did not change it. And we all know that James and Maso never forget something so it is definitely an F in their ranking. ;)
Thanks for uploading this, I’m currently in hospital for emergency surgery and have been watching your whole back catalogue, happy to have some new content to enjoy 😊
Speedy recovery! 💐
Hope the surgery went well!!
@@Peeps7468 thanks Peeps 🙏 it’s going alright just had another mri today and going back for surgery tomorrow so it’s gonna be a week long thing, who knows maybe another caravan of garbage will be out by the time I’m discharged haha
@@EverythingPSPOfficial Again, good luck. I spent last weekend taking a family member to the hospital. 10.5hrs of waiting later, she had testing done that confirmed a burst appendix. Luckily she was able to get the appendix removed and antibiotics should take care of the rest. It all worked out, but a stressful period to go through. I hope it goes smoothly for you, and that you don't run out of backlog on CZcams to pass the time.
The Thing is a perfect movie, you are completely correct on that one.
No 80s chicks tho, that’s a bummer
except its definition as a reboot. it's nothing to do with the thing from another world, it's a separate adaptation of who goes there by john campbell
I liked when this was rebooted as Caravan of Cabbage
I had no idea it was the same director for GoldenEye and Casino Royale. He needs to direct the next one too
He also directed the Mask Of Zorro, which is great. Although he also directed Green Lantern which is....far from great
@@rorylynch7775 these are 2 of the absolute best bond films imo and both were the first films for a new bond. Turns out I've enjoyed a fair few of his films after checking his imdb, the only one I've seen that sucked was green lantern
He's in his 80's now and he hasn't helmed a film of Bond's size for over a decade [since 'Green Lantern'], most going to VOD but again, he's pulled it off twice before...
@@jamesatkinsonja him being in his 80s should probably change my mind but then Spielberg, Scorsese, Miller etc are still going strong. I'm certainly not expecting him to get the job. But those are my 2 favorite bond films
I loved X-men first class until I realized they killed Darwin but he adapts to survive
I love First Class but it has Marvel movie sin of wasting characters with cool powers. X-Men especially.
That was actually Darwin escaping the trap of having to be in the same room as Bryan Singer in the next movies. His powers are crazy enough to do that.
Some say he's not dead... He lives on in our hearts!
I'm always surprised to find out people liked X-men 1st class. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are leagues above the younger actors. Lightyears even. No one in the new cast is likable or fun to watch. I'm glad people enjoyed it, but man I can not relate.
@@RedCaio James McCavoy and Michael Fassbender were both amazing as younger versions of Charles and Erik. Especially Michael Fassbender he was so believable to be a younger Ian Magneto
It's a little known fact that Mr Sunday Movies was a reboot of Mr Sunday Content
Fright Night with Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell is also a great Reboot.
Fright Night 2 however is not!.
... Even though it's definitely a remake...
@@StewartFletcher Remake Shmemake
I can't believe it took me until 16:27 to realize this was a list of the best reboots (I guess I misread the title). I was sitting here so confused why every single reboot y'all chose to talk about was between S-B lmfao
Bale’s voice wasn’t bad in BB. It was The Dark Knight where they really amped up the gravely voice.
Better than Bane’s voice in the third one. 😂
@@Peeps7468 Lol no kidding. I can at least understand Bale in all 3.
I really appreciated that you guys made sure to tell everyone it was Morbin Time when you talked about vulture and morbius.
Me: "War of the Worlds is a god awful piece of--is that Justin Chatwin?"
Great way to start off the work week.
Thank you for posting this right as I’ve started my lunch break!
Read the title as "Best Robots" and I've never been so confused by the opening 30 seconds of anything ever.
I did the same thing. I was looking forward to celebrating our mechanical overlord
they actually did do a tier ranking of best movie robots ft. THE Bicentennial Man
Batman Begins is the best Batman movie.
It’s also did something we hadn’t seen before with Batman. The Matt Reeves one is good but it doesn’t break new ground.
Facts
When things that are based on source material gets another adaptation I don't consider it a reboot tbh
Yeah, half the movies on this list aren't really reboots.
i know batman getting a b is a joke but it still felt bad that it ended there even though i found the bit funny. kinda feels like i've got got by one of those "it's actually the movie joker" moments.
I saw John Carpenter's 'The Thing' when it came out as a teenager back in 1982. It's true no adult liked it, but pretty much everyone under thirty love the film. This is why it took 20 years for it to become a horror classic.
Not to be “that guy” but True Grit (2010) might be the best movie ever made
If it's so good why's it D tier?
Checkmate atheists
It’s so fucking good. Hailee Steinfeld is amazing. All those incredible veteran actors, all that crazy arcane dialogue and she owns every scene. I love that the Cohens made the story about Mattie and _her_ true grit.
It's not Aliens so no.
The perfect sound at 8:39 Laurence is like "seriously???"
My soul ages a decade every time TMNT is not included in a list like this
As someone who has very fond memories of watching the 60's Ocean's Eleven with my dad growing up, I will not...stop the slander, it's completely justified, and that episode of CoG is better than the movie itself.
I know putting batman begins in the B tier was just a joke but I am deeply upset
The pink panther. Hands down that movie is a reboot.
Not a good one though. Unless you don't mean the Steve Martin one, and the 60s Pink Panther is somehow a reboot.
Would love a film that actually does the I Am Legend book justice
Love your videos, guys! Super fun, as always. Make my way back home from work more bearable 😂 Thank you!
Thanks mate! I hope your work becomes more bearable outside of these videos
Reboot Tier Ranking
S - Mike the TV
A - Megabyte
B - Dot Matrix
C - Bob
D - Hexadecimal
E - Killabyte
The User is the true S tier character.
I created this original comment all on my own.
@douglasblouir9185 I don't know, it seems like every time they lose a video game they completely quit and get a new one, so they're both bad at games and spoiled, F tier
Damn I didn't expect this comment. Well played I love it
The AndrAla erasure breaks my heart a bit.
I appreciate you considering bumblebee a reboot
The Thing came out the same month as E.T. And that apparently killed the picture in theaters. Audiences were apparently tired of cynicism in film. I heard this in the film commentary I think
Didn't help that Ebert gave it a horrible review, more proof that he didn't know anything about film.
yep, that's how it went down sadly
@@scottneil1187 Yeah, I don't get why Siskel and Ebert are still so highly regarded. They were both terrible critics and didn't pay attention to a lot of the movies they had to review.
Plenty of cynicism in 70s flicks. I’m not so sure The Thing suffers from this, it’s just a great horror flick.
@@chrisw6164 the thing is from 1982, not the '70s, and is notably nihilistic and bleak in tone
I've been a regular viewer/listener to the podcast for about four years now, and they still crack me up in the first 30 seconds of every video/podcast 😂
Every bit as well-reasoned and meticulously researched as I've come to expect from these guys. 10/10
You guys are the best, I look forward to every video you guys do, You guys are such a good team. You compliment each other tremendously.. Not to mention you guys are funny as hell!!! Oh yeah. Can you guys do a review on the movie The Warriors please from 1979 ? Thanks guys.
This list is on the money. I would sit through a movie with you lads.
Can vouch for the Caravan of Garbage episode about Oceans 11, definitely better than the movie. It's actually one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life and I rewatch it at least once every couple of months for a good laugh
I would argue that some of these are just new adaptations instead of reboots, but I don't feel like arguing so I'll just accept it and give the video a thumbs up. Keep up the good work, lads.
I rewatched those It movies a few days ago. I Loved them. Bloody excellent.
PLEASE DO MORE DREADFUL RATPACK MOVIES!!!!!
Guys and dolls was an amazing disaster
Great one guys, so many great call backs, ❤
Great video!
My favorite dynamic duo!
with all the subpar sequels, prequels, spinoffs, reboots, and remakes these days it is so refreshing to still have the new planet of the apes franchise continually making genuinely good films. just saw kingdom and while it may not be the best film of the series, it was still pretty great. for once, rather than being full of dread, i am hopefully excited for what comes next.
Little did they know their spider man indecision nearly got them capped by Lawrence.
“While you’re down there. Not there.” What a delightful joke James snuck in there without anyone noticing
dune not being S is crazy to me
Movie was absolute horseshit
Come on, James. Give godzilla a rank
My wife suggested we watch the horrendous Batman and Robin movie with Clooney and Schwarzenegger. We could not stop laughing.
I will forever defend that movie. I just love how ridiculously dumb and camp it is.
😂
@@Nodiee1 "TONIGHT, there's going to be a FREEZE in GAAAATHAM!"
@@Nodiee1 oh trust me I love that it is one giant early 2000's toy commercial 😂 seriously try to find a scene that doesn't lend itself wholly to merchandise that you would have bought as a kid and I'm sure did because let's be honest the early 2000's neon street gangs were just so cool 😂 I'm laughing but not joking even though I love how they're just hanging out in full skilly makeup and contacts in an abandoned warehouse.
@@FoxyAlphaRogerTango oh my favorite ice pun is probably "Everybody.... *Slight Smirk* CHILLLL!"
"Tim Curry was a really good IT" might be the new Frankenstein's Monster.
I think Casino Royale destroyed the Bond franchise because it's so incredibly good, they will never come close to that quality of film again and we will always be disappointed.
I love you guys for what you said about I AM LEGEND. I love, love, love the book and it has such an amazing ending and no adaptation has done it justice. The Will Smith one especially.
I enjoyed "3:10 to Yuma"(Its not a time stamp youtube! its a title!) Its got Alan Tudyk in it, that gives it a +1 to any movie for me. Also the badguy has a cool jacket and he goes "are you in a posse?" BLAM BLAM BLAM "I hate posses." that was cool. but also havent seen it since it came out like 17 years ago and never saw the original.
4:05 the boys make an error when attributing the B ranking to the stupid voice, when in fact it's obviously a B for Big Ears Batman
All of your opinions are correct. Thank you
"What's under the Fez?" really got me.
There’s an alternate universe where they made an Uncharted movie with Nathan Fillion around 2010 and it was so good that nothing bad ever happened in that universe again.
3:44
Of the Nolan, yes. But the best depiction of Gotham City is a toss up, between Batman 1989 and The Batman
They ranked Godzilla 'G' for 'Godzilla'.
Casino royale is an S, and I'm so glad casino royale was a stand alone movie.
“AGHH ROSEBUD!” 😂
Originally after this scene, he would yell out for his son, Rodney, because he knew he would die. But they cut it.
I always thought Charleton Heston's Omega Man was the first adaptation of I Am Legend
In reboots you should have had 2 ranks called "Killed It" one at the bottom where it literally killed the franchise before the reboot could take off, and one were they killed it in the good sense of knocking it out of the park.
They started to crack at Bumblebee, and really gave up at Godzilla 2014. Wouldnt have it any other way.
I like how they spent 10 seconds on DUNC
They forgot that Chirstian Bale doesn't do a voice in Batman Begins
I love The Thing, its an absolute S+++ for me, but it DOES have a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of the puppeteers head when you see the Dog Thing about to attack Childs. I love seeing it every time i watch it lol
Definitely F on I am Legend only because of the dog scene 🥺
Thanks again
Had to go back and watch that bumblebee Cybertron intro when they brought it up. 👌👌
rip james franco
ET, Rocky 3, Star Trek 2, Poltergeist, Blade Runner were all in theaters around the same time as The Thing. It never stood a chance.
All I remember from War of the Worlds is from Scary Movie 4.
I know it's not perfect but Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds is fantastic in my opinion. Yeah I know it's nothing like the book but I'm not the best reader and it was a pain to get through. Maybe not the best alien movie but a great disaster movie. The tremendous loss of life and struggle of all the humans in the movie just chills me to the bone. And honestly the opening and closing narration by Morgan Freeman are just *chefs kiss* MMM
Thanks for tormenting me by putting Batman Begins in B tier and acknowledging its misplacement the multiple times
3:10 to Yuma is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 come on guys review it
Have you guys seen Godzilla Minus One yet? It's astoundingly good. The Minus Color version was a cool idea too given the period. Saw it twice in Tokyo and once in the US in theaters.
I cant believe they spent 18 minutes and 31 seconds ranking and reranking 2019's the joker.
Only including good reboots is a weird choice for a tier list because you end up only using half of the tier list
I'm a die hard Trekkie. I will never understand the even/odd Trek take. 1 is way better than anyone gives it credit for. 2 and 3 should be watched as a single film. And 4 is terrible. I don't care about that Whale. And 5 is also better than its given credit for(but not much better than the general opinion. Just a smidge better)
Nobody really cares about Star Trek though, so it doesn’t really matter.
@MrOtistetrax I don't know how to respond to that. In the circles I run In Star Trek is deeply important. Plus all the real life gadgets and gizmos based on Trek Tech. The mobile cellular telephone is based on the Star Trek communicator. Also do you remember the late 90s. It was Star Trek fever. Talk Show hosts were Reacting to the Voyager finale. Idk, I think maybe you've just not seen the culture around it. I mean Trekkies basically created the first crop of fan conventions. I am curious who would've taken its place in culture. Maybe a big Asimov or Heinlein boom? Perhaps an adaptation of Foundation that isn't boring.
@@forty_two42 I’m sorry, mate. I was trolling you. And not even in a funny way. Now I just feel bad.
It’s never really been my thing, but I’ll admit that Star Trek has made huge contributions to the culture and has been important to the way our modern tech has developed. Trekkies (or Trekkers) are just such an easy target, because they’re so passionate.
I hope you can forgive my lame attempt to score points off you. Have a good ‘un.
@@MrOtistetrax Holy cow - A sincere apology on the internet! Well done, MrOtistetrax. I tip my hat in your general direction 🎩
Same, I was raised on Trek and I have no idea where the odd/even thing came from- I did a rewatch of all the films last year and it didn't even vaguely support the odd/even thing!
Is there a way to do official requests, cuz with the Ripley limited series that just dropped on Netflix, seems like a nice time to explore the Ripley cinemeatic universe.
The even/odd good/bad Star Trek movie streak still works if you don't reset the count to one for the JJ films.
Star Trek is a complicated one. As a movie, it’s very solid, probably the best movie to watch if you have never seen any Star Trek (then watch Star Trek Beyond and then go back to TOS), but it is kind of dumb.
The villain travels back in time due to his planet being destroyed and instead of going to Romulus and telling his people that their sun will explode, he instead destroys Vulcan to punish Spock. Yes, I am aware that there is a deleted scene where the Klingons capture Nero and his crew, but deleted scenes aren’t canon. What logic is that villain plot?
Also Kirk is supposed to be a nerd until after he leaves Starfleet; he’s not Maverick, he’s like that nerdy guy that figures himself out in his 30s (we all know the type). I know, time travel changed his upbringing so he’s no longer the same guy, but there is a missed opportunity to make something different.
The internal scientific logic of it is also kind of terrible. Starships are built in space in Star Trek, not on Earth. I know, it’s a great visual, but is also very dumb because of gravity wells (space docks are used instead). The concept of solar system spanning teleportation is also dumb and kind of invalidates the entire concept of the entire show. If you can just teleport between planets, why do they need an Enterprise? This is more of an issue in Star Trek Into Darkness (a truly dreadful Star Trek film), but it just reinforces that this film was made for general audiences and not science fiction fans.
Star Trek is a good movie, but a pretty terrible Star Trek movie.
2009 feels like they desperately tried to make Trek 'macho' and 'cool' and in doing so stripped it of anything that made it coherent or interesting.
HOW DARE YOU PUT BATMAN BEGINS FROM AN S TO A B!! DAMN YOU MASON!!!
Damn I love the mummy… ❤
I’d watch an entire TV series of Rick and Benny.
Still I do really love the Mummy Returns, awful Rock awful CGI shit aside.
id say xmen first class is a prequel cuz you can still rationalize it with the og trilogy, days of future past is half reboot and half sequel but overall id say its a reboot
Hot take: Man of Steel > 1978 Superman
In terms of action sure, but nothing beats peak Christopher Reeve so no fucking way.
@@li-limandragon9287 your opinion. I just watched 1978 like last year but still love man of steel more. It’s more layered and detailed and not so basic cookie cutter
@@tmac731It’s not layered, it’s like a high budget AMV made by an edgy teenager who is making a presentation about Superman being like Jesus but got distracted and watched a bunch of Dragon Ball Z instead.
I do like MoS to a degree but it’s not in spitting distance of the Donner film for one reason alone: charm. It’s the same thing with Rebel Moon, I can’t care about the characters when they’re robots who trying be poetical. Even Dune which is just as somber as MoS, at least understands good charismatic acting direction.
The action is better than the 1978 film, sure that’s fine. Everything else, not even close. That’s not just my opinion either.
In the newest The Mummy, if you just pretend Tom Cruise is Nathan Drake, it's a way better Uncharted movie.
Citizen Thing
We got 4 movies in before they stopped doing a legit ranking… I thinks that’s a new record long
2:12 Considering that many Trekkers Love what they've done with Strange New Worlds with how flashy and Razzle dazZLE that is while keeping homage to the OG these movies are pretty on par
I am legend dvd had a bunch of animated shorts showing the outbreak day 0 events in different countries and it was pretty cool. This franchise needs the Apes treatment where the vampires are treated as the inhabitants of earth and the little groups of surviving humans are just pests to them. A movie where a lone human protagonist comes to terms with that would be pretty cool. Franchise potential because you can turn him into a Vamp and then do a campy sequel where he’s the fish out of water in vampire society and his new vampire gf brings him home to her conservative vampire parents.
There are so many to choose from. Halloween, Tomb Raider, TMNT... Yeesh
2:41 I wasn’t looking and I still knew it was First Class before he said so 😂
