Chef - A Movie REALLY About Iron Man

- Ben is back hot off editing three Iron Man Caravan Of Garbage videos and it got him thinking. Is there a relationship between the first two John Favreau directed movies and his follow up independent movie Chef, a creative genius stifled by a studio system. I mean Dustin Hoffman. Anyways it's a good video you shouldn't be reading this you should be watching it.

amazing essay Ben! An incredible analysis :) I'm a new subscriber - a fellow Canadian
Have you seen Chef?
2nd video of yours I've seen here on the channel, both of them phenomenal
As much as I love this channels regular content, I think your talents are being wasted if you just spend all your time editing videos for the guys
Ben is obviously reviewing this movie as a cry out over how Mr. Sunday Movies stifles his creativity in editing videos for them. He's forced to do it their way instead of the right way. Just like in Chef, he brought back cast members from the videos he's forced to produce (Mason in this case) and now his new channel is his Food Truck where he can finally be free to unleash his true talent..

Another important fact about Favreau: HE was the guy who pushed for RDJ getting cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man, against the studio who didn't want RDJ because of his whole drug abuse history and being in jail and all. He really had to fight for him and only after Stan Lee backed him up, the studio agreed.
Originally, they wanted Tom Cruise as Tony Stark.
John Favreau is the unsung MVP of launching the MCU
Tom Cruise? what?
@@porc1429 lol yeah no shit. Tom Cruise is an incredible actor but he really would’ve fucked up the MCU
Kevin Feige was fighting for him, too. Ike Perlmutter was the true villain of the early MCU.

I do remember when Jon went to the marvel execs and said, ‘ ITS FUCKING MOLTEN’

Tbh Scarjo is too good. I bought into her and him so strong in the first act that I kept waiting for them to get together.
All the cast was good. Percy wasn't annoying at all, John Leguizamo's character is the friend we all wished we had, Favreau himself does a good job, etc.. Just such a solid movie. And as a guy who likes to cook a lot, really enjoyable for the actual chef parts of it too!

Glad someone finally made this. I said the same thing in theaters to my friends and they thought I was crazy. Said I was "reading too much into it. It's a movie about food". I was so mad because it was so clear to me, and Favreau's scene where he talks honestly with his son about his craft " this is what I love to do" something like that, it's really him confessing to us the audience how much he loves making movies.

Wow, I often forget that Jon Favreau hasn't directed an MCU movie since Iron Man 2. Likely because we keep seeing him as Happy all the time, so it never feels like he left.
And man, I liked Chef before, but the whole Marvel discourse of the time completely flew over my head. I never realised there was a connection there, but as soon as you mentioned it in the beginning, the entire movie clicked into place, and now I'll never look at it the same way again.
Exactly because unlike other filmmakers who had falling outs with Marvel in their early years, he kept being creatively influenced as the role of executive producer and even plays a beloved reoccurring character.
I've been realizing the mediocrity and cookie cutter nature of the newer marvel movies, i completely agree with john wanting more creative freedom in these movies so im glad he isnt returning,
I am a fan of mcu and still is, but if feige aint gonna let directors and writers completely take full control and stop using the stupid 3 act formula with the cg battle in the end and the corny jokes every few seconds, more and more people arent gonna watch it and be fatigued
I watched jack howard and he mentioned something i completely agree on, The corny jokes worked for avengers because it was subversive for its time, you dont get that kind of superhero movies that don't take itself very seriously back then, but now mcu have rehashed this formula too much to the point that the subversive jokes becomes predictable and not subversive
Anyway, I'm not feeling phase 4, they will be good movies here and there, but overall, if you watch other shows and movies you'll realize how lacking these marvel movies are, feige needs a change of plans, make a movie like Joker and Logan, the crossover gimmick should take a backseat for a while, make a good movie without the need to shoehorn crossovers, corney jokes, cgi battle. Give us character study, touch greater subjects, give us creative action setpieces etc, in conclusion give a director enough freedom to do what they want
@@vanne-necashionofbread9095 After Eternals which had the most supposed freedom ever VS spiderman which was an even bigger crossover and jokes, maybe the restaurant owner was right.

8:13 I have infinite respect for Jon Faverau having a heavy sandvich background
one of my favorite little things about this movie is when he cooks for scarlett johansson. like you said it’s semi unrealistic for a conventionally unattractive man to just walk up and get it on with someone like scarlett, but obviously it always happens in these movies written by the star. but instead of that tired trope, he gets rejected and instead has to rely on a skill to turn her on. it’s kinda empowering for ugly dudes and much more realistic!
Jon Favreau is the success story I never would have predicted, and I love that for him. He's so incredibly talented.
I love where he's ended up. He's still picking up a big paycheque and working on a big franchise... but it's on something a lot more intimate and personal like The Mandalorian. And this had to be his choice to do too.
It's kind of wild how this man went from blockbuster movie directing to showrunning. Normally that would be seen as a big step down but The Mandalorian is so amazing that this dude is gonna be beloved for it for generations.

You are not alone.
This is why James Cameron makes his stuff his own way, on his own terms even if it takes decades for them to be completed.
Man the studio system sucks sometimes.
James Cameron the Alien movie dude? Googling.
You get to make a movie on someone else's dime. When you have enough clout or your own money, then you can do whatever you want. You have clout when you have a proven track record of success at the highest level, e.g., James Cameron, not Favreau back then but Favreau now. Even then, making a movie is a huge financial risk because the studios have to get a bunch of investors, i.e., it's not all their money going into the project, and failures make it harder for them to get investors for other movies. Success begets success; failures scare people.
Chef has been one of my favorite movies since it was released on Netflix and I've seen it probably a dozen times. Your iron man take completely blew my mind and transformed the movie for me; now I have a whole new way of watching it. I'm so blown away by this video essay, thank you for making it.

I think Hoffman's character is more representative of the committee that was in place that even Feige had to report to. That he almost quit over before getting full control of the MCU.

The perfect ending to this movie would have been a scene of the critic giving a flawless positive review of the food after his first tasting to his copy editor, who rips it up and says "good news isn't going to sell papers. Go write something controversial that's going to trend on twitter".
Holy shit that sounds like a good idea.

This was great! Chef is a movie that I had forgotten that I wanted to watch. Right before you began to explain the plot, I paused the video and watched the movie. You also did a great job in the first 3mins laying out your thesis, that I was watching the movie with that in mind. Not only was the movie delightful, but adding the extra layer about it the allegorical nature of the film made it even more fascinating ! I finished the movie, and came back to finish this video. Just rewatched this movie, and I'm two years into the film industry, almost three. I think another element that went into this movie was Cowboys and Aliens, another high profile blockbuster from Favreau. That's another film that came out around the same time as Iron Man 2 that also reeks of corporate "vision" and didn't impress the critics. Definitely a spot on breakdown, but I'd add Cowboys Vs Aliens to the mix. I'd say the first critical meal was Iron Man 2, but he was ready to try again in the studio system after that and made Cowboys Vs Aliens which also seemed to have similar issues and lead to him creating Chef after that.
