Reign of Fire - Caravan of Garbage

- Reign Of Fire is an oft forgotten but somewhat pioneering action fantasy movie from 2002. Set in the distant future of 2020 it pits Christian Bale and Matthew Mcconaughey against an army of full on fire breathing dragons. The movie is something else in terms of scale, VFX work and action sequences. But does it hold up? We find out, that's the Caravan Of Garbage guarantee. I guess.

The scene where they act out Star Wars is still incredible
and the skydiving with dragons was kewl
“I’m your father!”
And all the kids go, “No!!”
Literally the only thing I remember about this movie
Where do bad folks go when they die?
Don't go to heaven where the angels fly,
Go watch Reign of Fire and fry,
Seem again til the fourth of July!
That's what Kurt Cobain really meant to sing during Unplugged
Every movie where someone acts out Star Wars to kids is incredible.
Including Return of The Jedi when 3PO acts it out to the Ewoks
I love this movie.
When Mcconaughey's character gets eaten, everything leading up to that makes you think, "Holy shit, this is about to be one of the most epic dragon kills of all time."
Then he gets eaten and you say "Oh, right, that makes sense."
100% agreed. When he jumps you have that inner dialogue, “he might actually pull this off.”
Then he dies and you’re like, “yea, that was stupid. Don’t know why I thought that would work.”
I remember being so hyped for this movie for that one scene then my Friend went and seen it and told me he just gets eaten lmao. I don't think I've ever watched it, just reviews on CZcams
oh yeah , reality ! :)
@@Kardinaal29some real "aim for the bushes" energy 😂
@@gking2709dude.. that would have been genuinely hilarious if you went to the movie hyped for that badass moment just to see him get eaten in half a second like nothing 😂
Crocodiles with Australian accents, when dragons arrive: “I’m just gonna go unda water.”
That killed me😄
I heard Bale treated the Dragons horribly on set. He’s apologized for it later....
The Last_Saint that scumbag
I believe it.
Honestly, this made me chuckle...nice!
"WELLLLLL GOOD FOR YOUUU"
😆😆😆
Modern Dragons owe alot to this movie. I wish there was more movies like this.
Love the Wyvern/Wyrm design. Always have. It’s just the absolute best for real-life dragon concepts.
I like the idea that different places have different dragons so Europe has the Wyvern, Asia has the Serpent type etc.
Daniel Clark-hughes actually Europe dragons have arms and legs with wings on their backs, kinda like a gargoyle
@@PittsburghSonido Wyverns (depicted on the Kingdom of Wessex's flag) had front legs but no backlegs, whereas these have backlegs and use their wings as front legs, like a bat. We'll call it the Bat-Dragon!
Laughs in welsh flag
"Dragon apocalypse movie" deserves to be a whole genre, like "zombie apocalypse movie". And yet somehow it began and ended with Reign of Fire (unless you count really crappy B-movies) and that's a shame.
generally, I miss unique apocalypse ideas. Like all we get is I guess a quiet place which is just "be quiet".
I want a load of subterranean troll people or Giant mutant frogs, anything would be welcome tbh
Remember D-War?
@@nicholastracy792 I do remember D-War. My point exactly.

Starting a petition to have this film renamed "The Greyest Showman"
This is the greyest shooow!
#WeeklyPlanetPosters
YESSS, PLS
Went to the comments to post that they came so close to saying "The Greyest Showman", but didn't.
But seriously, it is annoying to not use color when you can, BUT, we do still get black and white flicks, so what's the big deal? Pretend it's bl.&wh.
The bit about crocodiles really got me for some reason.
Me too, I kept giggling about it for like another 5 minutes
The absolute smugness behind "It's the perfect crime"
I honestly don't love this movie, but damn: to its credit, movies like this just don't get made today. Super risky, not based on an established franchise or source material, relatively left-field concept. Can certainly appreciate that in today's context of seemingly endless sequels, reboots and franchises.
(I dont want to mis-characterise myself as some "movies were better back in the day" boomer, plenty of great unique movies facilitated thanks to streaming nowadays, but the fact something like this was on billboards and the side of buses and shit when I was a kid blows my mind in retrospect)
Agreed!
Isn’t it such an odd age of film? I cringed when I heard they were making a third Bad Boys film. Lol! Dumb movies like this made up the 2000s.
Btw, I loved the video game of this movie. Or was it the other way around?
As someone who's never seen this movie, it looks really cool. Sadly marvel killed these weird one-off action movie ideas so everything is a big franchise. And if it doesn't make a billion dollars it failed, not like we could just spend less money on them or anything
@@DavySolaris don't worry i did not interpret this as a boomer comment, it suprisingly is easy to tell boomer comments apart from people who are not boomers, I hope this did not offend anyone born who is from the boomer time
You made a great point!!! I miss those times!
Let's hope Tenet does well at the box office BTW.
All I remember about this movie is a guy jumping off a building to attack a dragon with an ax, and ever since the day I saw that, I knew THAT was how I wanted to go out.
Also, damn, those dragons look really good, for 2002.
LMAO that's only scene I remember when I think about this movie to. That shot was in the trailer
You should watch Corridor Crew’s VFX Artists React where they talk about this movie. Don’t remember which episode it was but it was only a week or two ago.
The good news is, it is easy to get an axe and jump off a building. However, I don't know where you will get the dragon.
So you're telling me Christian Bale did TWO movies with kid Joffrey?
Cast him in Thor 4.
@@anubusx Fhour
Sonuvabitch.
Kid Joffrey?
He probably bullied him into becoming evil. His real life King Robert
I need to rewatch this movie. It's incredible how much it contributed to the whole "realistic-looking dragons" in TV and cinema.
I watched it again just yesterday. It’s great. Dragons here are treated as they should be: “Nukes must’ve done this” - “Nukes didn’t do that”. They’re terrifying and awe-inspiring. There’s only one shot in the movie where you can see them not from the characters perspective. The only thing I don’t really like about them is sound-design. It’s somehow doesn’t fit. But overall, gosh I love those dragons!
@@DimaJeydarI always loved that shot where the dragon is just sitting on top of the castle sending an absolutely pulverising amount of fire down through the top of it like a chimney.
"What I really appreciate about the opening is he gets some of the Dragon fluid in his eyes"

That sounds wrong

~ Matthew Mcconaughey the dragon-slayer ~
The man can lay down a monologue.
Let me stand next to your fire.
McConaughey was a beast in that role
*Gets eaten like Quint and Samuel Jackson*
🤣👍
Gerard Butler is in the movie too as Bale's friend who inevitably dies
I thought I was the only person on earth that liked this movie when it came out. Glad to know there are others out there with taste
It's one of my all time fav... First movie whereby I truly loved dragons...😁
Nope, as a kid, me and my siblings watched this movie sooooo much😂
I've loved Reign of Fire since I was a kid. Such an inventive film.
My heart sank when I saw “Reign of Fire” in the thumbnail- glad to see you don’t actually think it’s garbage - love this film lol
Expectations subverted.
The scene after he goes to invade London, when the dragon goes back to the castle. Bales acting in the scenes along with his co is still superb to this day. One of my all time favorite movies. (edit) or the scene where they are stealing tomatoes they are not ripe and some had just barely started to grow, but the actors rush them stripping them away from the vine and eating them like they were candy. Really drove home how desperate the situation was for them; shocked you didn’t mention the fire fighting scene in the vineyard tense and ingenious with stakes. Damn this movies good.
Next superhero showdown: Matt vs Ben. Not in their ability to edit but in a physical battle to the death. (Plot twist, Ben is already dead!)
Me vs. Zombie Ben and also Mitch is there but WHOSE SIDE WILL HE CHOOSE??
Matt wins
Gabriel Leka Ah, but I AM American. And I played half-field flag football for like 2 whole years when I was a kid. So.
@kirk brackmann Damn you M.Night Shamalamalama and your plot twists.
This movie is a spiritual sequel to Pete's Dragon.
I hope some random hobos had legal ownership of the final dragon in this movie.
I adore this movie. Cheesy bits and all. The axe dive moment is easily in my top 10 badass moments
What a way to go
Mine too! Epic
This was the first DVD I owned. I don't know anyone that's even heard of it. It's a solid 7.5/10, had restraint showing off dragons, consistent rules of universe, and characters were good enough. Story was good enough.
I've been arguing for years that these are the best dragon effects and still hold up after so many years.
Recently rewatched this, I was amazed at how good the dragons still look, I thought it was going to be a case of rose tinted glasses but they still hold up. The ps2 game was also lots of fun
There was a ps2 game?
Yeah there was video game of this what was cool about it you can play as the dragon and as the human you can drive different vehicle
More like grey-tinted spectacles.
The game was great
This film had a great premise for sure, some of the execution hasn't aged well but I'm glad it seems to be getting more recognition these days.
Check out, the prestige and sunshine.
Thoughts sunshine, masons favourite movie
@@heartless604 Sunshine is overrated tripe.

Second best line: "she never went away. What do you think? That they put her on storage untill they need her for another movie?"
I actually really enjoy this movie. Whenever someone says Matt McConaughey isn't badass, I show them this.
I think everyone that is only familiar with his later movies are shocked to see what he did for that role back then 🙋🇺🇲🛠️🇷🇺
Reign Of Fire’s dragons walked so Game of Thrones dragons could run. Or...fly.
Iv never heard of this film but man the dragons remind me a hell of a lot of GoT dragons
Eden Jay Collins agreed. Drogon in particular looks like it took a lot of inspiration from the bull dragon in reign of fire.
Pretty much every dragon uses the bat look nowadays. The four legged ones look too much like cows with wings.

Why do you call Ultimate Thor "Thor Ultimate"?
That really bothers me
He looks like Ragnar from Vikings
He really does look like Thor ultimate
Thor ultimate was the best version
Sorry.. I'm just trying to annoy someone three years after the fact 😂
This is still my favourite movie - parlty because its one of few apocalyptic movies set in Britain that really portrays how grim it is being in Britain, but mostly because its got fucking dragons.
Aren't most post apocalyptic British movies grim!?
this movie didnt decide to be grey, everything is just grey here
What are you talking about the dragons practically gave the UK a makeover for this movie. It's literally every ugly duckling movie when the girl protagonist discovers make-up and hair straighteners.
There´s a Dragonheart direct to video sequel coming out THIS YEAR. Yep, they´re still making those
Have to imagine there's a lot of overlap between people who watch Dragonheart sequels and the people who buy little dragon-with-crystal-ball figurines at the mall
@@Drforrester31 love those little things
Oh god.. I gotta watch it. Even if I hate it
Not like we have a lot of movies to look forward to this year. Dr doolittle is in the top five worldwide box office for 2020.
Dragonheart is still one of my personal favorite movies of all time... but I think I saw the sequel way back when, but I don’t remember it, and NEVER saw it again... and that was when I was a kid who couldn’t tell bad cinema from good. So that tells me something about the real quality of those DH sequels.
I loved Reign of Fire. still watch it every so often
You joke about "Dragon from Dragonheart," but his name was actually "Draco." Which...is just..."dragon."
"Hello, my name is Hominid Human."
Draco says his real name is unpronounceable by humans, but he gets interrupted before he can actually say it out loud, so we just have to take his word for it.
To be fair, if I were in a movie and my character's name was Van Zan I'd probably just go by that name for the rest of my life
Free Bird!!!
When I was a kid my mom took me to see eight legged freaks and this but after eight legged freaks my mom said "that's enough crap for one day" and we went home
Aw, but there’s always room for crappy movies
same thing happened when i went with my dad to see the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
This is such a underrated movie. Just recently rewatched it and it still holds up.
I fondly remember this as the first movie I ever watched on Netflix.
This film was a perfect allegory for my last relationship. First we were happy, then we were Matthew McConaughey soaring through the air with an axe at a Dragon, then it was over and left me confused.
This is a great example of people taking a B-movie premise and elevating it with effort and creativity, and they were lucky to get some lead actors who were about to break out in a major way. Also, setting the grayest movie ever in the UK is just good filmmaking
My family was obsessed with this movie - great actors (think about how much this would cost to cast nowadays), great premise, genuine thrills, and a fantastic dragon design that makes them menacing visceral creatures as opposed to mystical and mysterious (like a lot of other dragons). I miss movies like this, they're fun, the actors took it seriously in terms of emotion, and clearly the people behind the film were giving it their all to create a story worth telling.
I remember seeing this late at night on TV some night and I was surprised I'd never heard it, it's actually super cool and it's one of my fave movies
I absolutely agree, not a great movie but it's SO fun to watch. Hella enjoyable.
I can't believe Matt killed Ben in the Reign of Fire finale, amazing
They filmed a bunch of this near where I lived in Ireland and I remember there was a big argument with the local army barracks because the set was built around old church ruins (think celtic tombs and stuff) and they were afraid the filmmakers would damage it. Then the foot and mouth scare hit and the army kept shutting the set down (due to a quarantine) and my dad who was a soldier at the time said he had to do security for it all. He saw all the actors but hadn't a clue who they were.
I've never heard of this but still watching because it's you two.
It's worth a watch
I would argue that Toothless is the most realistically accurate dragon created for cinema.
Idk why but the crocodile bit really got me
Also I think it's funny we see the editors on this channel more than James and Maso... the hosts (presenters?)
I really like this one. Not a masterpiece, but fun.
I saw this once at a friend's house in like 2006. I was like 90% certain it was a childlike fever dream.
I can't explain it... I just really, really love everything about this movie.
THANK YOU. To me, this remains the scariest, most realistic, and overall best dragon design I have ever seen.
Jack Gleeson was also in The Dark Knight with Christian Bale 😲
Wasn't it Batman Begins?
This film was amazing, super underrated.
This really is one of the most under appreciated movies of it's time, I don't think anyone's really seen it, it was a flop at the box office and hasn't gained the cult following it deserves. It's not a life changing film or anything, but it is really well done, it's a totally solid movie and those aren't as common as we might think.
The Hungarian title actually was '2020: Reign of Fire'
Somehow a dragon apocalypse seems better than the one we are living now
Russell Harrell isn’t it funny how just about every other apocalypse scenario feels preferable?
This blew my mind as a kid, I remember the dragons genuinely scaring me
I loved this movie as a kid. It’s a fun one-off action flick with great actors and solid special effects.
I’m always amazed how few people know it though.
I always love the reactions played out by one of the kids watching the S.Wars play. He's really going for it.
Wait. You're telling me the guy who directed the masterpiece of SoCal-meets-Wisconsin rollerblading 90's perfection, "Airborne", ALSO made the peak of Dragon schlock?...

These special effects have held up amazing. This is a rare effects driven movie that hasnt aged in the sightest. Everyone needs to just do whatever they did..
Not many have the courage to admit, but this was the beginning of the McConaughey-sance
Awww I was hoping you'd cover the game! It was actually pretty fun.
This is one of the first movies my mom bought in the transition from VHS to DVD. Always loved it as a kid.
I loved this movie so much when it came out. It was my introduction to a lot of those main actors. Seeing the helicopter halo dive scene in theatres as a kid was freaking intense! I felt like I was diving through the clouds myself lol

Such a classic. Probobly the best dragon movie actually. I remember when I was 12 and just watched anything with a dragon. If a game had a dragon. I wanted it, but this is still my favorite.
I'm so glad you guys covered this movie. It's been one of my favorite early 2000s movies ever since I saw it when it came out on DVD. I'm about halfway through this video, but I have to pause it just to tell you that I absolutely LOVE the fact that you're giving the design and animation of the dragons as much cred as you are. Because they do look fantastic!
I saw this in the cinema way back when, and I remember coming out of that really impressed by the dragons, and feeling that they were made for realism rather than show. The technical explanation for the fire was so natural and easy, and it makes sense!
"Everything's grey, why is everything grey, is it all the ash?"
It was filmed in Ireland.
It's funny, you showed a clip of the Road, a film famous for being set in a world that constantly has ash fall from the sky. Cormac McCarthy got the idea from when he spent a holiday in Ireland and how grey it was.

I really enjoyed this film I actually saw it in theatres when I was 13 years old. If I'm not mistaken it was a summer release. I'll always remember seeing this movie in theatres because a fight broke out in the audience literally following the fight scene between Bale and Matthew Machonahey. This guy was drunk and made this other guy upset and caused a scene. They were removed and the audience members including myself and my parents got free movie tickets for the inconvenient distraction. Quite honestly it added to my joyful experience seeing the film. Got me pumped for the climax lol
You need to do a review of Dragonheart and all the sequels. They are still making them, they had one come out in February this year.
