I joined as a boy soldier/Royal Engineer in 1964, 60 years ago. The Royal Engineers and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) trained as one so we were trained the same as equipment mechanics/electricians. I recapbadged from RE to REME and my service included attachments to three RE units, 62, 28, 51, as a lance jack, staff sergeant and WO1 respectively. RE’s and REME worked alongside each other regardless of our Corps. Without doubt the best tours I had throughout my 26 year career.

Former Royal Engineer, qualified as Combat Engineer, Fitter Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, High Risk Search and RE Diver. Divers pay used to go up to £14 per day extra so considerably more than para pay and as a supervisor more like helicopter pilot pay. Basic diver pay is similar to para pay and you can have both if you pass the courses and are in the units. Sounds great but it is arduous, only 50% will pass the aptitude to get on the course. Then usually only 4 to 6 of a course of 30 will pass. Large number of divers are also already para or commando so gives you an idea of the standard of fitness. You will have to do a couple of years in your unit before you apply, but if you get there it is worth it.

Hi, recently been through Gib myself and completed my Phase 2.
I did the 10 week course you are describing. I knew this as my B3 course. After spending a few months in TV troop before going to my Phase 3 the new recruits at Gib (3 RSME) were being phased out of a B3 course and now do a B2 course which as far as I am aware is 12-14 weeks.
Unfortunately that’s all I know and I don’t know anyone who has done the new B2 as it was being phased in during the last weeks of me being there.

You can put your name down for it when your at gib or Chatham. They generally like to get blokes(and ladies) on arduous courses early in their career. However if a few years down the line in a normal unit you fancy it there's nothing stopping you applying. However, once you start climbing the ranks you might have to wait for a place in a unit for your rank.

The hardest part of what's now called phase 2, is saving enough money to go out on the lash down amazing Basingstoke. Go out and get p!$$3d new sappers, this is the real training when you get to your new Squadron. Good luck sprogs, listen to your drunk corporals!!!
