- Celebrating Lucille Ball on this episode of The Jim Masters Show LIVE! entertainment, lifestyle, talk show series with author and playwright Lee Tannen. Lee is the author of I Loved Lucy: My Friendship with Lucille Ball and creator of the play, I Loved Lucy. In 2001, St. Martin’s Press published in hardcover Lee’s autobiographical memoir I Loved Lucy; a funny and poignant story about his friendship with Lucille Ball in the last decade of her life.
It’s a very personal look into the private life or arguably the funniest entertainment icon of the 20th century; a “warts and all” portrait of a lady whose public persona is known worldwide. It immediately became a bestseller and the following year it was published in trade paperback. Lee also narrates the memoir as an audio book through audible.com. In 2010, Lee adapted I Loved Lucy for the stage where it premiered at The Laguna Playhouse. After extensive re-writes it premiered in London in 2016 off the West End at the prestigious Jermyn Street Theatre where it received critical acclaim and played to sold out houses for 15 weeks.
In July 2017 it transferred to the Art Theatre in London’s West End where it once again received very good reviews and played to packed houses for a 7 week run. Mr. Tannen’s other work includes a new libretto in 2007 for the stage adaptation of the classic children’s story Dr. Dolittle, starring and directed by ten time Tony Award winner Tommy Tune. A year earlier, Lee was a contributing writer for the Drama-Desk nominated musical The Audience produced by The Transport Group. In 2003, he was writer and Associate Director for Paparazzi, an original musical for Holland America Line directed by Tommy Tune. In 2001, Lee wrote and directed All The World’s a Stage, a star studded benefit for Variety Club at Carnegie Hall starring, among others, Barbara Cook, Nathan Lane and Tommy Tune and hosted by Jane Powell. Lee has also written special material for Joan Rivers, Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley MacLaine.

Have either of you been to Jamestown NY? ALSO, have you met impressionist Diane Vincent? If you close your eyes and just listen, she sounds just like LUCY. I have Lee's book. Great to see him in person. Love this program. At 69, Lucy still makes me laugh. My home is in upstate NY, not far from the ⚾️ Hall of Fame.!!!!!👍🙂🙂❤

Thank you so much for having Lee on with you this afternoon. I always loved watching “I Love Lucy” on t.v. When I could. There were things today that I learned about Lucille Ball that I never knew existed. Actually it really was a lot of fun to hear Lee talk about her and how much he loved and adored her. I giggled to myself when Lee was telling the story about how the bath tub overflowed and she was trying to suck up the water with a little hand held vacuum.. I really enjoyed this episode Jim and everyone of your shows that I get to listen to and watch when I get home after a long day at work. Your shows are truly an inspiration and a comfort for me to watch.
