      If you paid very close attention, when Dean was singing to his hit everybody loves somebody sometime, whomever did the subtle on the video can't hear well because they wrote something instead of the true lyric when it was clearly what he was singing even if you never heard the song in you life.

    Dean Martin and Lucy were good friends in real life. She had a special nickname for him. She affectionately called him Ol' crooked finger! Dean said he never taped his hands back in his boxing days so it caused a lotta damage to his fingers. Greg Garrison once said that Dean was a little self conscious about his fingers during the taping of the Dean Martin Variety Show, so Dean tried to have a cigarette in his hand whenever possible. In my opinion, Dean Martin was and is THE BEST!

      Yes , "Kid Crochet" was a boxer, but that's not how his fingers got broken. An old-timer musician told the story of how (and why) Dino carried a pistol in his boot.
      Early in his career, Dean apparently made overtures to the wrong girl in the audience and had the crap beaten out of him, by a couple of goons who dragged him into the back alley of the club. They broke his hands pretty badly it seems. He once told a police officer that he always carried a gun, because that was never going to happen to him again!!!

      @@ericrichardson3408 Wrong. How silly some people are. He couldn't afford the tape needed for boxing, and so his fingers got broken. What a load of garbage. Dean is clearly not a creep with women, would not have "made overtures" to someone in the audience. The only time that happened was when he saw Jeanne, his future wife in the audience, eyes locked, and it was love at first sight.
      You've distorted a lovely story.

      You're absolutely right! Dean Martin did not like to rehears; and Lucy did. But the reason why he didn't like to rehearse was, not because he was lazy, but because he wanted to be spontaneous because when he worked with Jerry back in the day, the natural part of acting and leaving bloopers in etc. Is what made it work. However, Lucy knew this. And if Lucy wanted to rehearse, Dean would have respected that and definitely would have done so. It was a known fact in Hollywood the Dean was very good at remembering his lines. And not only that, he would also memorize the other actors lines as well. Both Dean and Lucy and their families were very, very, close. She even had Deans' wife in one of the I love Lucy's episodes back in the day. Even Dean's son Dino,and Lucy's son Desi, and another individual by the name of Billy Hensche we're in a band together many years ago.

There are very few Classic TV series from the inception of Television that she did not appear as an extra and a countless list of Classic Movies up until 1986. This is the ONLY time I have ever heard her utter a sound. Her ability to enrich a scene was so profound it wasn't until after 200 viewings of The Sound of Music that I realized she was the beautiful woman standing next to Captain Von Trapp during the "So Long Farewell" scene. That's a professional. She speaks at 17:02

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle Před 8 lety +6

      +Bryan Criddic Lucy took no direction from anybody, and that included her director, usually Jack Donahoe. Frank liked to do one take and move on. Each knowing the other as well as they did, they were wise not to work together.

    • @bryanismyname7583
      @bryanismyname7583 Před 8 lety +2

      It's funny, though. Her reputation as an actress is often filtered through the flop that was "Mame," but in the right role Lucy could be very good. I'd recommend her supporting work in the 1949 film "Easy Living" as evidence of this.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle Před 8 lety +3

      +Bryan Criddic Lucy was a good actress, but after I Love Lucy, she was- I hate to sound corny- higher on the food chain than actress, but legend-national monument, expected to be nothing else but herself. Notice that a lot of comments about her here, and on other Lucy sites, have nothing to do with acting, but her appearance, and just how much people love her.

      True enough. But even on her shows, she was willing to do things for a laugh that few women did in those times and she did it without losing any of her charm. That's why people loved her TV persona. Still, I wish she had been able to play more interesting roles in films. She rarely got the chance to do so. "Mame" was a mistake, but she probably could have done something. You could be right, though, that by the mid-sixties the audience probably just wanted her to be the way she was on TV.

      Bryan Criddic It seemed like it was only me, but I thought she was terrific in Stone Pillow, the last (and rare) time she played a non-Lucy character. I don't think she had any particular persona after I Love Lucy, where she was witty, manipulating, calculating, mischievous, romantic, non-conformist. In The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy, she was just a ditz who got into odd situations, often with guest stars, as seen here. I think the public's love for Lucille Ball was built upon I Love Lucy, and glad to see her in anything.
