Honestly, “I might need this later” and “this has some sort of value” are very common sentiments that lead to hoarding. I’ll get lost in it like my mom (genetics, baby!!) unless I swallow my anxiety and just throw away the damn trash I absolutely don’t need, and never will need. It’s *so* easy to get sucked in, especially if you have a mental illness like depression or OCD.

There's a Finnish youtuber named Aurikatariina who's a professional cleaner that shows her process for cleaning apartments like this. She even does some bad ones for free! I love her bc she's incredibly empathetic to her clients and focuses not on shaming them or making fun of the apartment, but on how fun it is for her to clean and how happy the client will be in their clean home :)
I highly recommend her channel if Mr. Moist wants any more cleaning content that's closer to cleaning straight trash than cleaning a hoard of unopened items.

@@NotOnDrugs Many people who hoard have mental illness, and it's a big step for them to both admit they have a problem and ask for outside help. Many clients in Aurikatariina's videos suffered from some sort of debilitating injury or personal loss that led to severe depression, and cleaning just wasn't a priority for someone in that state. Once they started to receive treatment and their life circumstances improved, they realized how much their unhealthy environment also made their mental health suffer. It is very hard to be kind to those to create their own terrible states sometimes, but everyone is going through something. Nobody who is doing fantastic wants a space like the one in this video. There is almost always some deeper issue at play.

@@NotOnDrugs I'm very sorry to hear that. The videos I'm talking about are usually not lifelong situations or ones like this, where some feels a compulsive need to buy a lot of things and hoard them. The situations I'm discussing are ones with clear indicators of mental distress with a clear starting point, where people are going through far bigger and overwhelming problems than cleaning their room, as silly as that may seem to someone who has good coping skills. Again, it is sometimes difficult to empathize with someone who created their own distressing situation, but it should be recognized that these people, both in this video and those featured on Aurikatariina's channel realized they had issues and couldn't tackle them alone. It can be very frightening for someone with a stigmatized issue to seek help even when they're ready to accept it, and I commend the clients in Aurikatariina's videos for doing so.

I cleaned a hoarders house before with one other person. Garbage is the easiest shit to clean. Pet damage is another story… We cleaned a small room that was used by several cats for a decade as a litter box. The entire room. The biggest thing that surprised me was how many garbage bags you need to fill to get rid of everything. I lost track at 200 or so. Dumpster wasn’t an option due to street restrictions. The memory of it clean afterwards was a feeling I’ll never forget. Also my uncle’s house, which had floor to ceiling containers in his bedroom with my deceased aunt’s clothing. After we removed everything, he was surprised that a window existed in the room. Help a hoarder if you can. The pushback will be fierce but be kind and persistent and they’ll be so happy when it’s done.

I have my makeup, my clothes, and my laptop pretty much. Those are the only things I really need. When I first moved into his apartment, I cleaned his whole kitchen for him. Had to throw away a whole bag of silverware that was in the sink hah. Unfortunately, he still has a lot of stuff, but it's not useless stuff either. He has a ton of tools, accessories for different devices and whatever other guy stuff he has. Problem is, we are building a TINY house right now, and I have no clue if he can truly part ways with a lot of it. He's not a certifiable hoarder, but he lets certain things pile up to the point it takes away from the serenity of the room, and he buys a lot of stuff. Our house is _really_ tiny, too lol. It will forever be present in the back of his mind, but therapy will help him learn a new thinking process that allows him to let go of a lot more. the trash is the kicker. cleaning gurus will tell you the first step you can do when overwhelmed that will make any room look 80% cleaner is to take the trash out of it. it's the least difficult step, one of the least boring, and yet you can wind up in such a situation mentally that even that is too taxing for a while.
getting rid of the shame is a big first step. the world is actually pretty damn hard despite what your parents might have told you. it may very well be because you were hearing 'clean your room' while you were struggling with other major anxieties that is the same reason you actually feel more relief from NOT cleaning now. but it only works short term, and you might have figured that out. don't feel ashamed, but if you're miserable and tired of it, find someone you trust and confide in them, or tell someone on the internet, and think about something small you could do ASAP to make it better. here's a guide for quickly doing the bare minimum on any room. try doing 5-10 mins on just step 1:
    1. get rid of all the obvious trash
    2. collect laundry or dishes and put where they belong (don't do them)
    3. starting with the largest flat surface, clear it off and wipe/dust/clean if needed -- put those items away
    4. repeat on all flat surfaces
    5. pick up everything off the floor
    6. now put the items from #5 away
you can dust and vacuum if you wanna be fancy about it. the key is that the largest amount of difference is made with the earliest, simplest steps. gl

I held on to like 12 mini pringles cans for about two years and I only got rid of them when I couldn’t take them with me to college. I held on to water bottles, empty boxes, glass drinks, bottle tops, pill bottles, and a lot more. I was convinced that I would find a use for everything eventually. I never left dishes in my room thankfully. I still struggle with the urge, but I’m a lot better now. I did it even as a child. I would hide milkshakes and cups and plates under my bed to the point where I wasn’t allowed to eat in my room. It’s honestly a huge struggle when you get extremely distressed and panicky when trying to get rid of things. I feel so bad for people who have to struggle with hoarding involving food.

      @kg6801 Před rokem

@sinofcringe True, it's not a simple diagnosis, there's a bit of a spectrum and it's not all about the desire to keep things for whatever reason. It's also about the inability to take action to get rid of things, at the time or later when there's some build up, it can be "I'll get rid of this thing later", as opposed to "I need to keep this thing because xyz". You're right, overwhelm when things build up is a huge part of it, and that stress can actually increase particular reactions, so that need to keep things (or inability to get rid of something now) can sometimes seem to come out of nowhere and morph into weird things you would never have seen yourself doing. It's a combination of a lot of things, but yes, not all things are necessarily hoarding disorder but a result of other issues, but at the same time, they can also shift and become something more recognisably hoarding.

At my worst these videos are pretty spot on, give me a good mental health day and it's clean in a matter of hours. These people just need support from friends and family.

I volenteer for kids cancer charities and stuff since I can afford to be unpaid. But when I'm doing nothing I sorta fall apart. I made sure I got stuck in with cleaning my apartment with my sister (took us 7 hours) and honestly, I've been far better since and it was probs the best bday present of all time.

It may not've been spotless, but if someone were to come into my room, it sure wouldn't look like that. I appreciate this guy acknowledging the problem and doing something about it. I used to let crap pile in my house to the point it took like most of the day to clean up. Then I felt amazing having a clean house. Then after living with my ex, she was a bit crazy about cleaning and really whipped me into shape about cleaning regularly and I built up that habit. If you tidy up every day by throwing things away after a meal, doing the dishes every night, etc. it really makes it easier to keep the house nice.
Then if you do the other stuff like vacuuming every other week, dusting once a month, cleaning the bathroom every other week, it makes everything much easier and faster because nothing ever gets that dirty. If you let dirt and dust pile on, it takes longer to clean it. Plus most women really dig a guy with a clean house.

He had bad depression at the time and it shows more with how nonchalantly filthy his house was. He'd just drop shit on the floor accidentally but not even try to pick it up unless it was extremely important (like his wallet and keys). Helped him clean up around the house a few years ago. Like I'm arguably a low-level hoarder and have a lot of junk cluttering everything up, but one thing I absolutely can't handle is rotting food or other organic matter laying around (I have a really strong sense of smell, so I notice it quickly), and pretty much any dairy product is on the top of the list. I remember back in high school someone left a full thermos of coffee with cream forgotten in the crevice of a classroom, and then one day it was knocked over after months of no one seeing it, and let me tell, it probably would've been *less* horrible if someone had just straight up puked in class, the smell of 3+ month putrefied cream still haunts me to this day.

My paternal aunt who lives with my family is like this. She hoards useful/usable stuff, especially clothes. Boxes and bags of them. They may not be useful/usable to her personally, but she strongly feels the urge to save or preserve them under her care. If we try to forcibly remove them from her room or our porch and repackage them to be shipped away for charity etc and don't do it immediately, she will take them all back. Stuff or clothes we want to throw away but is still somewhat functional, she'll check one by one and "steal" them to be a part of her collection. Edit to add: She'll even go around the neighborhood to make connections with people and asks around for their unwanted clothes so she could maybe use them later or distribute them to other people she knows. She won't volunteer them up for charity or sell them, as she'd rather give them to us or people she knows. But most of those clothes and stuff, she'll keep for years on end.

Never saw the inside but at my old apartment the unit under us was filled almost to the ceiling with all kinds of garbage. We had gnat problems because of them. Milk cartons were visible from the window, some empty some not. I have absolutely no clue what was going on in that apartment.

i feel really bad for the person who lives in that apartment, i hope that they get the help that they need and stop living in such a depressing and sad state.
