  • Variegated floss can look confusing, but it's actually easy to get some really cool effects. In this video we'll look at some different methods for cross stitching with variegated thread, using DMC Coloris as an example.

    I used variagated greens in a landscape, grass fields, vanishing into the distance. Worked really well! I did whole stitches and the colour changes were really subtle.

    Great info! I have never used variegated yarn/floss except in a sweater I crocheted for my dog🐶. You offered lots of possibilities! I will definitely try this soon. Thanks.

      You're very welcome! I used to be so scared of variegated yarn, honestly, but now I use it all the time for socks because socks can be whatever crazy colour and nobody thinks you're weird 😂

    I read all the below comments and agree with You and the many…..that these are fun…..it was very clever to show the many possibilities plus……I loved the last piece you shared…..what a gorgeous presentation it becomes…..

      Thanks! That last one is definitely my favourite, probably because I'm a solid colour girl so the really contrasty colour changes aren't necessarily always to my taste! It's good to know how to tone that down a bit and bring everything together more smoothly.

    Oh thank you for this! I do always wonder with the different ways of variations. I've got a few hand dyed skeins but aside from a patch of sun I've been too scared to use them lol 😂 the last one where you blended with the dark fuschia looking colour looked fab and made me realise that I can do the same thing with some hand dyed sick yarn I have that I wasnt too keen on 👌 saves wasting it or gifting away x

      There are so many options, honestly, it definitely can be a bit overwhelming! My approach is generally just to try stuff, and remember there's no "wrong" there's just "didn't quite like the effect so ripped it out and did it a different way instead" 😅 Great idea with the yarn too, it's the exact same principle!

    This is a great resource for beginners! :D
    Personally I really enjoy using variegated thread. My favourite method is the fifth one you described, however the first time I tried variegated thread I used the first method. I used DMC Colours #4500 for a flowering spring bush look. It was really affective.

      Shockingly, given that I just made a whole video about it, I've not even really used variegated much outside of blackwork. Too cheap to pay for the fancy colourways, you see! 😅 But yeah I love the effects you can get for naturally varied textures like greenery, works really well 👍

    I didn't even know I wanted/needed to learn about this. I am kind of intimidated by the idea of variegated (and since I'm pretty committed to only doing stamped cross stitch it's not really an issue). But nevertheless I was intrigued by this video! I liked the last two done with the same variegated skein best.

      Well maybe you didn't need to know it right now, but on that fateful day when you finally do encounter a pattern calling for variegated at least you'll know what to do with it 😆

    Thank you so much for this great video! I own a few variegated threads but don’t really know what to do with them. This definitely helps!

    That was a video I needed to see! I did not know how to use variagated floss. I have seen several people using it, but I don't like the stripes in for example animalfur. Your 5th and 6th block show how that can be different. And block 7! Wow, what a good idea! Thanks so much for this video 🪡

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes I think it can be a bit overwhelming precisely *because* there are so many ways to use it. If I had infinite prep time I could've come up with another 10 or so random experiments easily! Glad it was helpful :)

  • @x-stitchandchill

    Love this! I tend to stay away from variagated thread because I don't know how it would turn out. Good to know some of the options!

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Best way to find out is to experiment, right? 😀 Sadly I didn't have enough time to stitch up more of the near-infinite options, but hopefully this was enough to give people an idea.

    Great video! I love how you experiment with things. I'm definitely going to use a variegated thread next time I do some blackwork stitching as yours looked so pretty.

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I really do love it with blackwork but it can be great for regular cross stitch too. Really cool in silhouette patterns for example, that are all supposed to be one colour. Experimenting is the only way to find out what you like, though! :)

    Thanks for the video. I change up how I stitch with variegated floss depending on the project and how variegated it is. I have always made the full cross before going to the next stitch though. In one project it told me to go around in a spiral. I really liked that effect.

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yes the direction you complete your stitches in makes such a big difference! I just went with horizontal here but spirals, diagonals, all kinds of cool effects to be found with this stuff. Thanks for watching while you probably should've been preparing for your trip, hope you're having a great time 😀

    I got a bulk pack of jp coats black and white from walmart. The white thread is fine. The black thread that whole lot disintegrates like your varigated. Don't know what causes it but it seems to be a pretty regular thing with all brands of floss.

      Oh interesting! I remember at the time I was wondering if this was just A Thing with DMC Coloris but everyone I asked said no, so I think it was just a bad batch since DMC are usually such good quality. Shame you had the same issue, it's so frustrating to try and use!

    I am so intimidated by variegated thread. I have projects that I have purchased everything I need but haven't even touched yet because I'm afraid of doing something wrong. I think I need to try blocking it out like you did and just go for it.
