    Working with your homemade floss drops reminded me when my grandmother and mother would use matchbooks to wrap their skeins around. To a little kid, the matchbooks would be somewhat educational because my dad would get them at restaurants, businesses, etc., in different areas of Missouri and Illinois.

    i just keep them in the skein for storage and put them on drops for a project because otherwise they can get super tangled. if there are leftovers from projects already in drops I put them in one of my storage bags (I have one for every century. all 100 something I have, all 200, etc.) so they don't move as much and therefore don't tangle up. i recommend this method

      Haha, yay! Yeah I am still really happy with this setup tbh although have got quite lazy about actually putting the floss drops back in place once I'm finished with them. Of course, that was an issue with the old bobbin box too so it's definitely on me and not the storage system 😅

  • @lauracoleman8114
    @lauracoleman8114 Před 4 měsíci

    I'm a loop starter as well. I pull the skein until I can meet the 2 ends together, then loop it on to itself again. I do this 3 or 4 times until I'm at the length I work with. Then I loop it onto my drop, snipping the loops at the opposite end. It uses the whole skein with no odd bits to deal with.

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 4 měsíci

      I got into embroidery and knitting around the time I was 8. My mom was really into fiber arts since she was a kid. She also taught me how to crochet, weave, spin wool, sew, and my grandma taught me how to smock. My mom learned the basics of bobbin lace from her grandma, and I always wished she would teach me, but by the time I came along she hadn't done it in years and wasn't confident enough to teach me. Thank goodness for CZcams 😊. I'm 33 for reference

    My grandmother taught me to keep my thread relatively short so it won't tangle as much. I've always used floss that was no longer than 18 inches. When I get a new skein, I fold the entire length in half, repeatedly until I've got the strand length right. Then I put the floss onto floss drops. My son found directions on online to make me custom floss drops with his 3D printer. He even makes them purple, my favorite color!

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před 10 měsíci

      Definitely considered 3d printing mine, so far I've surprisingly had no problems at all with these cardboard ones being damaged (maybe because they're doubled up? idk) but if they ever do start to crumble, I'll probably give some printed ones a go. Sadly we can't do fancy colours though, all grey is a much less appealing prospect than your pretty ones!

    I started with bobbins too, but eventually found I hated winding them, so now they exist either in project bags or in a series of bags/bins depending on brand, use, number, and how many skeins I have (there's a paper tracking sheet in therein DMC bin as well). It's admittedly very complicated but it work well for my librarian brain, which needs everything put away "just so".
    Thanks for another great video. :D
    PS - My wife loved the "good enough for government work" because as a musician "good enough for jazz" has never sounded right to her. BTW, thanks for the congrats on the wedding! Down with bobbins! It's making me happy to find out they infuriate so many other people too, don't know why they're still the "default" that new stitchers pick up. Maybe we need to start some sort of grassroots educational campaign... 🤔

    Love your videos - I frequently go back to the one with the comparison of the pattern keeper & other software.
    At any rate, for floss storage, I came to the same conclusions that you did (hate bobbinating, I had to rearrange everything in the box every time I added a new color, I like to pull precut threads easily, floss not always cut to the right length, etc.). Plus, I am also cheap and the non-bobbin options cost more than I wanted to spend. Ultimately, I found a simple way to make the drops that only requires a couple of hole punches (no measuring, no cutting) and is pretty inexpensive.
    I bought blank white paper gift tags on Amazon - they come in a variety of shapes (I picked scalloped @ 2 3/8" wide) and, most importantly to me, have a hole already punched in the top which easily fits on a 2" or smaller binder ring for hanging. I got 200 of these tags for $8US on Amazon and they're pretty sturdy.
    I then used a 5/8" round hole punch (like the ones you have) & put a hole in the bottom to loop the floss like you do.
    I then added a third hole using a standard basic hole punch (1/8"?) for the random shorter unused threads (I put this near the top in one of the scallops).
    That's it.
    So, when I need to add a new skein to a drop, I just grab one of these tags, punch a couple of holes, write the color/number on both sides, and voila! I'm ready to add the floss & start stitching within a few minutes. And I can keep all of the supplies to do this in my notions bag - I don't have to pull out mats, scissors, rulers, etc.

      Ah thank you that's lovely to hear! And nice setup with the gift tags! I did consider doing similar but what can I say, I'm a sucker for a basic white rectangle. On the bright side there's a ton of the things left over in a little bag, so as my floss collection grows I can just grab them and tie on and hopefully not have to do any more hole punching for a very VERY long time! 😅

    I have found that folding an entire skein in half, then in half again, then into thirds creates the perfect length for me. I pull both tags off of the skein, put my left hand into the center of all of the loops, then unwind it all while holding one of the ends. Once I get to the other end, I hold the two ends together in one hand and "drag" them together until I reach the loop (now in half). Then I put the two ends and the loop together in one hand and "drag" once more until it's in half again. Then I ***don't know how to explain*** manipulate that length into thirds (ends up being about fingertip to shoulder length) and cut all of the loops at both ends. Confused yet? Anyway, I can cut all of my new skeins (in this fashion) to the same lengths, with only my hands and scissors; and no "extra" weird lengths. 😉Good luck deciphering that mess, lol. Stay safe and stitch happy.

      Haha, I totally followed that and know exactly what you mean and I'm not even lying, honest! Tbh it's probably just me overthinking as per, but the logic was that if I start using fancier brands than DMC, they might not come in the exact same lengths so having an external measurement would keep them all looking tidy. But that might be absolute nonsense, who knows! They do fit perfectly in the shelf space though so there's that 😅

    U have nailed it! My floss drops r just a little different in that I found some pretty pdfs on etsy and ran my cardstock thru the printer. After cutting apart (I, too, cut them fairly small - can’t remember the exact size, but very close to what you’ve cut yours) and ‘punching’ the holes, when ready to put a dmc on one, i totally flatten the dmc number thingy and tape it vertically to one side of the drop. I also purchased the little tiny dmc ‘number’ pack and the corresponding number is also adhered to the drop - so there are two ways of identifying what lives on the drop. I will say, though, that those little, tiny, number squares have, at times, removed themselves from the drop!
    FINALLY, I will say, that having used floss ziplocs for 30-some years, I put the floss on its corresponding drop as a project calls for that particular number - as much as I’d like to snap my fingers and have all on their drop (drops are ALL ready to go as needed - save their little dmc number wrap).
    Oh, another FINALLY - I suppose I’m forever held in the floss ziploc hell due to the fact that I have no less than 2 of every dmc number and many more of a boatload of them.😂

      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před rokem

      Lol even my new system is not immune from the curse of "also there's still a big sack of duplicate and off-brand floss hidden in a cupboard" so you're definitely not alone there! I did consider the ziploc bags but worried it might get super annoying with the rustling noise since I usually stitch while we watch tv. Maybe it would've been fine, who knows, but having the floss drops hanging up next to wear I'm sitting has been an absolute gamechanger.
      Give us ten, maybe twenty years and I'm sure all our old flosses will be used up and we'll be 100% onto the drops. Maybe. Ok give us thirty years to be sure... 😂

    Oh my goodness, I’m in the middle of doing almost the exact same thing! I cheated though and bought my floss drops from a craft store here in Australia. I’ve watched about a million videos on floss storage etc and one lady suggested unraveling the whole skein, pinch the two ends together and find the centre, then fold in half. Repeat until you get down to the length you like to work with. The length you need to cut will depend on whether you start with a loop or a knot or an away knot, hopefully this all makes sense.🤦‍♀️

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před rokem

      It does make sense! I know a lot of people do it that way but personally I got into my head about skeins maybe not being the exact same length (especially if I branch out into other brands) and therefore the lengths on the drops would be slightly different and apparently this was enough for my brain to go "no, you know what, we'll just put the extra effort in so they can all be the same" 😅

    I went 20 years without stitching anything, so my floss is still in the same bobbin box (and on the same bobbins) I put it in in the 90s! (A little water and the kinks smooth right out.) Ugh! Anyway, you've convinced me to reconsider leaving my floss on floss drops so I can easily "shop" for floss for my next project. You've brought up some very good points on the pros/cons of this. By the way, what and/or where did you get those under-the-shelf hooks? I'm not familiar with them.

I also have a cricut so I think I can quickly design these floss drops and the cricut will do all the cutting work! Question, I bought off brand floss on Amazon since it’s much cheaper. Are there cons to off brand floss?

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před rokem

      Welcome to the hobby! I've been down the off-brand road too and there are definitely some things to keep in mind.
      A lot of them claim to colour match to DMC but they very rarely seem to, so I wouldn't use them on a full coverage or a project where the exact shades are really important.
      They're also less likely to be colourfast and the last thing you want is for your threads to run when you wash the finished piece, so I'd advise a test run ESPECIALLY with dark colours on light fabric.
      The other things are more minor, like they're just generally not as good quality and will tangle more. But if you're anything like me the savings outweigh those little inconveniences 😅

    • @TheGiddyStitcher
      @TheGiddyStitcher  Před rokem +1

      Honestly it's just personal preference from trial and error! I like to loop start, which means I need each strand to be pretty long because I'll be folding it in half. But I also don't want it to be TOO long as then it'll be more likely to tangle. Currently they're all cut to 33 inches since I wrapped them around a piece of A3 cardboard to keep them uniform, and that's been working out great for me.

      Making the simple floss drops themselves took maybe about 3 hours, I sat down one afternoon and just got through them, although I did make a lot more than I needed just as futureproofing, and filming slows things down too.
      But obviously transferring everything from skeins to drops was the real timesink, it's hard to put an exact number on it but I just did a few here and there most nights for a week, and got the majority done during Friday and Saturday film nights. So maybe 12-15 hours total for that part? It was actually pretty relaxing, to be honest. I definitely wasn't paying full attention or trying to be super efficient but it does take a while!
