- Sage, scholar, Vizier to Sennacherib and Esarhaddon in the capital city of Nineveh during the Neo-Assyrian Empire, the great counselor Ahikar represented an archetype to countless generations of peoples in the Ancient Near East.
Whether Ahikar actually existed or not will most likely never be known, but his legend lives on in his many proverbs and wise sayings. And it wasn't only the Neo-Assyrians who extolled his virtues. Versions of his legend have been found as far afield as Ancient Egypt and as recently as the Ottoman Empire. Come take a deep dive with us into a world of political intrigue, paternal devotion, betrayal, and revenge.

“Oh my Son, be not afraid of thy Lord who created thee, lest he be silent to thee” this is interesting, a lot of modern religions teach to be God-fearing. Thanks DW. Miss ya Nick
The fear of the Lord, means to depart from evil. Also to be aware that the most high sees everything.
Good point! That’s the difference with modern State instituted religions and ancient religion. Today religion is imposed on people instead of giving people what one cares for in religion which is liberation and freedom.
Religion is ambrosia not this or that milk honey wine so there is meat.Be bold before the lord, how somewhere else. You cant even give phobos a down hill nudge,so quantity.cold trap.poe
Might I recommend that you consider reading my reply (placed above - presuming that it has not been deleted by the video creators)?
What that very statement means is that the Assyrians knew, worshipped, and loved God, Almighty.
Great work. Thanks for keeping it going. Missing you Nick.
Thank you so much. What I found very instructive was this part: 'Oh, most high God, o creator of the heavens
and of the earth, o creator of all created things, I beseech thee to give me a boy that I may be consoled by him, that he may be present at my death, that he may close my eyes and that he may bury me.' Then, there came to him a voice saying, 'Inasmuch as thou hast relied first of all on graven images and hast offered sacrifices to them, for this reason thou shalt remain childless thy life long, but take Nadan, thy sister's son, and make him thy child and teach him thy learning.' [5:00] [12:50]
This was amazing!! Thank you for sharing wisdom I would have never heard any other time. I’m truly grateful to have heard this! Peace
RIP Nick
Love your voice over DW! Great work as always man. You bring life to the ancient world.

Have you ever heard about the mythical story of "Zahaak and Kavi Ahangaran - ZahAAk and Chief of blacksmiths"? However this story has some mythical charactors but the whole story is based on a very important historical event. In fact Zahaak is Astyages the fourth and the last Kay "King" of Medes empire. He was the son of Cyaxares the third Kay of Medes and the conqueror of Nynava with his eleven alied tribes including Nabu Polasar of Babylon. Cyaxares son of Faraortes has ened the "War of Gods" however was worshiping fire himself. This two Medes kings are the main characters of the great book of Shahnameh which is also under the influane of Greek tragic theater. King Astyages is well known for western historians. It is so interesting that in entire mythical story nothing is mythical about Kavi The blacksmith's character. He carries a flag and a big size mob of people following him to Astiages's palace. We learned in history that Astyages was dethroned and exiled to Hircania ( Gorgan) for ten years. In 539 B.C.E. after the fall of Babylon he was allowed to returne to Babylon. He was not allowed to enter to the city of Ecbatana. In 549 B.C.E. Astyages was over throned by a revolutionary act of people in Ecbatana. A coucil of seven person elected Cyrus the great to rule the land.
It seems like the videos on this channel used to be a lot shorter and more to-the-point, but I am loving the thoroughness of these new ones... I mean, I know the old guy passed away, bless his soul, (+κύριε ελέησον+), so maybe this new guy has more time and energy? I appreciate the effort, although due to my limited free-time, I now have to watch these videos in chunks instead of all at once... More is definitely better; I'm glad this channel has survived and grown stronger. Keep up the good work! 👍😁❤️
A fine story. Do not plant a fine seed in a head which is already full of rocks.
Oh I could watch that a couple of times! I love your reading.
Loved it! Thanks!
Hearing this made me realize that Time Travel exists. It was so well done!
Thank you for sharing with us the ancient wisdom, valid for eternity. It reminds me of Proverbs!
I might even believe it’s copied from Sumer like the flood story, the Bible’s many stories are very similar to the Sumerian ones

This narration is amazing, thank you so much for posting this wonderful story 😁 - keeping in mind that quite a few lines are somewhat objectionable by modern standards. 😆
Wow. Loved it!
Unironically cool story, bro!
DW Draffen.nif I have misspelled, forgive me please. I heard your name in Nick's vids. I have watched your improving delivery over the years. Loved this one!
This was a great morality tale.
This is great I love it
so good
One of your Best videos. That style of narration is utterly beautiful. Did you receive formal training in narrating?
Can I ask what was used for background music and sound?
Just a suggestion, you'd be excellent at voiceover work for medieval/historical video games. You have an awesome voice for it.
Thank you, got hooked! Enchanted, nice work.
Ahikar was a great man
Such a wise man
Sill going strong I see!
Wisdom that should be taught in school's while young. This planet is being tore apart by greed. Needs are few but wants are many. ✌️
Let us be glad that the iconoclasts, and the malicious, were unable to smash the faces of all the sculptured portraits from antiquity.
Wow [spoilers]
----------------------
So he was so wise his speech could make an evil man bloat and explode, just wow. Caught me off guard there.
I have the Book of the Assyrian Saga, Akhiqar written in its original Assyrian language.
This sounds like proverbs or something like that.
My ancestors ❣️
Wow
Nick would be proud.
Oh my son
There are stories and principles in The Bible and Marcus Aurelius that are just responses or references to this story. Another example of a "wise man" producing a monstrous son.
Which story is oldest?
Cool story, poor cat!

King Lear - Antiquity edition
5 stars
Clearly, this tale must have been edited multiple times, particularly by the Ottomans. Why? Because I have been studying the history, mythology, mores, and tales from the Neo-Assyrian Empire for nearly 10 years - particularly under the rulers of the Sargonid dynasty (772-609 BCE). Therefore, I am certain that...
- no Assyrian and no Egyptian monarchs were monotheists (except for the heretic Akhenaten),
- the Assyrian kings hardly ever displayed mercy upon (perceived) traitors, and, especially,
- the Assyrian kings were never afraid of Egypt (which, during the reign of the great Sennacherib, was already in decline).
In fact, his son Esarhaddon defeated and conquered Egypt before his death in 669 BCE.
Consequently, while I do not question the existence of "The Story of Ahikar," I am certain that its contents must have been heavily reworked and rephrased circa 2,000 years before the inception of the Ottoman era (1299-1922).
Post Script-1
Rulers of the Sargonid dynasty:
- Sargon II (722-705 BCE)
- Sennacherib (705-681 BCE)
- Esarhaddon (681-669 BCE)
- Ashurbanipal (669-631 BCE), and
- the final incompetent kings of Assyria (631-609 BCE)
Post Script-2:
The Story of Ahikar, a folktale of Babylonian or Persian origin, is about a wise and moral man who supposedly served as one of the chief counselors of Sennacherib, king of Assyria; and there is no uniformity of detail vis-a-vis this moral-based tale of honor versus inequity...
Post Script-3:
I greatly admire and mourn this site's late creator: the unforgettable, great Nick!!!

I like hearing history not constrained by Jewish, Christian or Muslim authors.
well this story is actually was told in the Quran just like it is, Muslim consider him as a Muslim, idk about Christians or Jews though.
@@wewenang5167 He was neither one. He was NOT a Jewish, Christian, or Muslim His God at that time was called
I'm new on this Chanel, very good educational
Sure sounds like the Byblos Baal, the Tower or Bridge to Heaven sounds like the Great Pyramid, seeing as the Quran relates that the Tower of Babel was built by Ahiram for Pharoah, so he could meet the God of Moses.
Its Astrological allegory, the Great Pyramid itself embodies the Metonic Calendar, as do all Megalithic sites around the world. Make of that what you will
I too have thought of the possibly of the Great Pyramid possibly being the Tower of Babel... The more info you find in the various tales around the world that depict the story, the more it seems definitive...Almost the entire description of every aspect fit perfectly with the story the ancient Egyptians (Khets) tell... after the fall of Atlantis heading east to Giza construct a massive structure that will remain throughout the ages even surviving cataclysms. Serving as a keeper of ancient knowledge, cosmology, geometrical mathematics of Earth, and allowing the spiritual ascension to the heavens. They develope a massive cultural metacenter around this multifunctional (watchtower) that is described by Horadotus as a "Wonder of the Ancient World." That becomes the most powerful and spectacular the world had ever seen....
Then they are dispersed around the world, separated by language and race etc.. and the world renowned city stops being constructed and is left to bury in the ground, later found by later cultures, mostly deconstructed to build and repair other structures, but reconstruction was attempted two separate times with the most recent being Alexander the Great only to be lost once more...
Think how we have this one highly advanced Great Pyramid... Then all around the world different constructions of, some spectacular, but mostly less advanced pyramids (you would think the cultures that were established after dispersement would try to replicate what they did with the original Tower, but with far less resources and knowledge)
It would explain the obvious decline in construction techniques and abilities over time... Reconstruction attempts at many of these sites by later civilizations, purposes of Giza and pyramids and fill in a massive amount of the holes in our understanding of the ancient culture connections and their mysteries 🤔💯
But who knows 🤷🏼
Why are ancient texts translated into KIng James Version style English?
They usually aren't.
Good question. This is a public domain translation from 1893. Many scholars of the time felt old texts should get this formal treatment. In a way I think it works, helping to remind line by line that we are dealing with a very different ancient culture. Of course, such stylistic choices have long ago fallen out of favor but this is still the best version I could find. I hope you enjoyed it anyway.
@@DWDraffin I did, I just found it curious. There is an academic reason to use older English and that is so you can properly translate the T/V distinctions, but I doubt they are using the T/V distinction correctly in this instance and are just using “liturgical” English out of reverence.
@@JeffNeelzebub well, the history of language is generally one of becoming gradually less formal and less complex (long before king James). I find this form of translation preserves some of that while still being readable. Modern translations on the other hand often seem jarring to me, unless they’ve been extensively rewritten, largely (but not exclusively) because their structure and (depending on translation) syntax are quite formal (and formulaic). To me modern language requires a modern form which can only be achieved if the stories are retold rather than translated (there only nuances ofc, there’s no such thing as a “pure” translation). A viable option for sure, but these “old sounding” translations are a great alternative imo.
@@eugenemartone7023 I agree, the older forms of translation seem to keep more of the poetic zeal one would expect to hear for modern audiences and the English language. It already sounds a lot different in Assyrian for sure or Aramaic.
Give your life to Christ, He loves you and will heal you, don’t put it off, the time is now!!
Eh... My former pastor tried that, but his cancer, I mean CV 19 was stronger, perhaps his healing days are long past... I feel giving my life to the creation The Great Creator bestowed my consciousness control of and seek as much of the same knowledge Yeshua might have studied that isn't kept from us, like most of what Yeshua taught and lived is...pays greater homage to The Creator 🙏
Christ had his life that was given to him and was far greater than mine surely will be, but it is mine and a small part of those it has and will encounter until my next journey 💯

This book is excluded from Bible ever wonder why did they do this ? Comment below what do you have to say why have book of ahikar is deleted from Bible
Nice the story at the end did not say amen what did it say great story did you guys know where the assyrians went they went to the punjab like the beinpals from.ashur benipal kahlon from.kalhu the tutt from tut the chahal amd bassi and basras. Nadaan is Punjabi word one that doesnt understand foolish or young and has learned or foolishly chooses to.be ignorant
The word, AMEN, is an Assyrian word that means "Believe". SO, you pray and by the end you say, AMEN, means "Believe".
The “Oh my son” truth sayings are not scripture. Typical semi wise sayings plagued that land whereas real scriptural truths did not. Such sayings were no doubt what Solomon was filled with without true scripture upholding the guru principle. That’s why Ethiopia inherited the ark of the covenant when Queen of Sheba came to meet Solomon and was disappointed that his reputation of being wise was just that just a reputation and he was not all that wise so she took the ark back with her to Ethiopia where it stays today. Besides showing gods favor having said to be attending the ark of the covenant the ark is now securely within an Ethiopian Christian ministry.
The God is Ashur the Land is Ashur the people are Ashur the language is ASHUR***Greater
Very true.
Pronunciation is very off especially with names and titles. Very annoying.
well unless he can speak fluent Arabic, Aramaic or Syriac, i supposed he can't really pronounce every semitic names and titles properly, because that is the original language of the people of Assyria during that times, it's very close to classical Arabic that is still spoken till today.
if there was an /were entrepreneurial person/people... compiled his teaching, redacted as needed.... and preached all those words.... put the man as philosophical leader... added some procedures and other bullshit.... there might be Ahikarian religion 😂😂😂
