Love this episode. It's a throwback to MCM's older, more simple tutorial videos that grew the channel to what it is today. Please produce more of these.
Dash cams, they have been responsible for capturing all sorts of things on video, like meteors, wild animals, multiple car pile ups, insane driving... all things you won't see in this episode BUT by showing you legends how to install your very own dash cam yourself, you may be the person who captures something crazy from the dash of your ride. More likely you'll have days and days of extremely uneventful commuting in traffic.

Do dashcams work for Hondas? Because once I'm hitting VTEC I'll be going faster than light so that may make it so the camera can't record anything?

you guys should do a video on posi-taps or implement them in a video in some way. Those little things are so great for beginners when working with wires.

Ok So i was able to find out what dashcam you guys are using it's the Cowon AW1.
ha, I was thinking the packaging looked familiar (just recently bought a Cowon music player. Brand is really rare in Euroland)
+Brendan GoPro with dash mount works well, no GPS but they're cheap second hand.
Actually you can log GPS with a smartphone/tablet and overlay it on the vid.
Actually, its the AW2, the AW1 says HD on the front. The AW2 says Front+ on the front of the camera.

I think that they agreed to always crush their vehicles as something happened that lashbacked against them when they sold to the public, some guy claiming it was from mighty car mods as a one-of-a-kind or some shit like that. I'm not sure, but I don't think they'll be selling t' public. :(
You make a good point about the GPS. Anyone who's got a sat nav will know the sat nav says they're doing 3mph less than what you're actually doing. This has happened in every car I've driven. What I'm doing in a project is getting the speed from the OBD2 connector which is linked to a Raspberry Pi. At least then the speed reading will be accurate because it's coming from the car itself, turning the Pi in to a black box essentially.
Also, this video was screaming out for a collaboration with Tech Moan. He's got a fetish about dash cams.
From my understanding, your car's speedometer is not completely accurate, and is conservative by design. It's possible the speed your GPS is reporting is closer to reality. I could be wrong though.
manlolargh I don't think the GPS could be any more truer, as it's only accurate up to 10 meters I think. I've driven a Peugeot 107 up to a Honda CR-V and in all of the cars, regardless of size, the Sat Nav has read 3mph slower than the speedo of the car. Would be interesting to see if you're right though.
your speedo depends on things like tyre diameter to know how fast the car is going because it's just measuring rotational speed of the wheels. manufacturers are often conservative with the speedo calibration.
tire wear and actual tire size plays a part in speedo readings. even the correct sized tires from another manufacture can very quite a bit. the difference on my car between 24" tires and 26" tires is less then 5mph, stock size was 25.9" and is no longer avaliable.
overall, GPS will be far more accurate as it has quite a few less variables to be controlled.
But in the car I've driven the tyres have been standard to manufacturer specification. I'm not sure what the rule is outside of the UK, but here the Police give you 10% over the limit before they'll give you a ticket. But they want to now remove that so if you go over 30mph by even 1mph they want to hit you with a fine, and the reason they give is that the new cars compared to the older ones (which a lot of the rules are based on - the braking distance even today is based on how long it took a Ford Anglia to stop) are more accurate with the speedo's.
I love it that they always upload videos when I'm about to get my morning coffee. I always have a great day when I watch some MCM in the morning. Much love!

This video inspired me to finally chuck a camera into my '98 Legacy/Liberty wagon. I used a Viofo A119 for the 1440p goodness. I used a fuse tap on my radio fuse so the recording will start and stop with the ignition. I ran the wiring up the left side A pillar. I stuck a 12v to 5v usb converter in the ceiling above the map lights and cut a notch in the headliner to run the cable out. I stuck the camera on the passenger's side of the rearview mirror on the blue tint strip with the lens poking out. I used the GPS module, configured to put the GPS data as a separate metadata track in the video file but not burned into the video. Works great.

PRetty sure they did on this one, but didnt show it. The camera they used is the Cowon AW2. Notice how it says Front+ on the front of the camera, that means it was part of the 2 camera auto capsule system.
Yea, I bet it's the same but I assume you hardwire it to the reverse light? This way, it comes on when you're in reverse gear
You want it on more often than that. What if someone rear ends you at a traffic light because they're going to fast? You wouldn't be in reverse gear but you sure as hell would want footage of it.

I fitted the NextBase 512g and it's an awesome bit of kit with really clear footage, map display, speed and g force. Also has parking mode so catches all the car park denters :)

I installed radar detectors in my 2013 Armada and 2014 Maxima. In Armada had to use an "add a fuse" to run the power wire to fuse box. In Maxima I used a wiretap that tapped into power rearview mirror. So much easier.

Iceland in the winter isn't actually very cold, it usually hovers around 32F or 0C... In comparison, in Chicago the temperature will often dip below 0F or -18C
I would've mentioned that some dash cams cater to an optional polarising lens which can be used to reduce or completely remove dash reflections. Great video none the less.

I would like to add that it's not a good idea to use cheap cards for storage, and periodically check its integrity in another device. They aren't subject to impacts as much as a hard drive, but they can fail - they have a finite amount of read / write cycles, something to consider if your particular camera starts recording from the moment you set off. Once it's "full" it will overwrite data as Marty described, it's the repetition that will eventually degrade the card. It's not a huge deal, but one worth keeping an eye on just in case.
I love mine and it has come in handy already. I have them in all my cars and my family members cars as well. Worth the investment and also the hard wire kit to tap into the fuse box instead of having a outlet being used all the time and to have a cleaner look with a cleaner install

In the one or two MCM videos I've had a go at doing it's a touch hard to keep up with the pace; I thought a subtle list might aide tortoise-brains like me.

You should have also mentioned that when picking the placement of the dash cam make sure that its within the wiper's reach so when its raining the dash cam isn't obstructed by water drops.
very handy stuff , notice that it mostly reacts to bass in your car like shocks of a crash , thats the experience i have in my car , so be mindful of what to buy if you have a heavy sound system
Dashcams are soooo necessary these days. I recommend them to all my friends and family. As a police officer of 11 years, I've rarely ever been to an accident where all parties agree it was one driver's fault. It's almost human instinct to immediately lie and protect yourself when you do something wrong so it's nice to have footage of an incident especially if the accident evidence doesn't easily point to one easy conclusion such as a fender bender usually does.
Yes was waiting for an episode like this, any chance there will be more on safety gear/ car security like this? More things than just your average alarm.
You can't just use any old micro sd card either. It has to be a class 6 card or above so it can handle the constant saving of 1080p footage. Some dashcams require a class 10 card even. 32GB is a good starting size but I wouldn't go any smaller.
You can get kits which basically add a 12v plug into your fusebox which is a little easier than the method shown by Marty & Moog. I had mine wired in at a garage really cheap because I have no idea when it comes to wiring.
If you're unsure what dashcam to get, go to the Techmoan CZcams channel, he reviews all sorts of electronics including dashcams, and has a section dedicated to them on his website.

another suggestion for the power sources that *might* save disturbing the trim so much is the interior light. typically, these cameras don't have a heavy amp draw so that should be well up to the job

Got one in my truck facing forward after nearly having the nose taken off several times and going to be putting another in the rear window facing back.
You guys forgot to mention is the computer program that may come with the camera as well for programming and reformatting the recording cards when they are full.
I always refresh the video after I watch it and see the difference in views, its amazing. When I first came here it was at 7 views and now its 1,837.

In hot climates Dash cams that come with Capacitors instead of batteries are a major plus since caps do not swell like batteries in the higher temps that the interior of cars see.
My two cents about GPS lag: One thing you can do about GPS lag in the cases of an accident is to actual pinpoint the position from the video and obtain the true GPS coordinates from a mobile-handheld GPS unit. The true GPS position can then be used to show actual position and speed can be calculated from the distance between the two positions and the time on the video.

You should do a video on doing this with a relay for when you need to make your own ignition wiring. Stuff like that becomes necessary once you have a lot of electronics to run! Relays are cool!
