- Confused on how to optimize your buffs and debuffs in CotC? I don't blame you - there's a lot to figure out! Hopefully by the end of the video you'll have a good idea on how to best utilize your buffs and debuffs as well as how to craft your teams in a way that accommodates the various different caps!
Can't find Octopath CotC in your app store? You might not be in a valid region - Check out this video on how to proceed and download/install the game!

I dig this guide. Some thing that tripped me in it was the use of "Damage Up." I've found that when looking at skills, I see "Raise 'X' damage by Y%", or just "Raise 'x' damage." Like Wingate's stack w/ Fiore.
Definitively gonna have to watch that one again lol. I've found my favorite part of your videos is watching all of the future content in the background!
Huh Billy having a monster of a special probably plays into the octuplets run being possible…eventually. But I’m building the account for it now! Rerolled into 7, hopefully I can pull Menny soon!
I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos!
They have helped me grasp so many things in the short time the game has been out for global.
You are awesome 🙂
What a great guide! I hesitated at first, telling myself "not sure I'm gonna learn something but whatever"
Damn after all this, I can say "I didn't know sh**"
Thanks a lot! Plus, it was really well explained!
Amazing video, I am however not happy, because of the recent announcement that Prim will be the next banner traveler, but I will wait patiently for Daddy Albright to tell me how unparalleled his focus is.
This is day 9 of playing without Cyrus.
Thank you for this video! I have been wanting to build a team around Ice damage and I got really surprised by how much you were able to increase it! My highest damage so far is around 3 thousand, I got a long way to go😁
Just started the game as soon as I knew there was an OT mobile game haha... It's good to see we can count on someone to explain these kind of things in the future ! Thanks for this video
You make the best guides for CotC. Just commenting to bring this channel more attention.
Managed to snag 2x Lynette on the steps 3-5 of the Fiore/Sophia step up. Now desperately waiting for your Lynette video 😀
hey Shizukatz, a suggestion for further videos is to present what you are talking about exactly on the screen at the same time to aid in the explanation, for example @3:05 you are talking about how to distinguish the icon although you did explain it a visual would go a long way
thanks for your videos!
Oml i have been WAITING for this tyty!
Not understanding anything, but still whooshed by how you are able to explain such a complicated thing. Great job, dude
Thank you for the detailed explanation.
Since global version is completely out of order, hope we can get Cyrus a lot sooner.
Awesome videos! Keep it up, you're helping a ton with these videos! I'm already familiar with Octopath somehow, because I played the Console Version. Yet, there's so much to learn in CotC. Also, I've 2 awakening stones for Lynette.. Am I safe to use one and keep one for her future Special?
Yes, feel free to use one if you have 2 :)
@@ShizukatzCotC Thank you. Also, Viola's Awakening Stone can be used right away, or is it advised to save hers as well if you only have 1?
Would use her's right away. Lynette keeps hers specifically.
I love your guides and they are very helpful, but your buff/debuff guide is a little bit misleading. I was initially led to believe that there are 4 categories of buffs: Skill, Passive, Special, and Damage up. But a JP person corrected me and it's more like this:
There are 3 categories (Skill, Passive, and Special skill) and each category has 2 types of buff:
- Atk/Mag (E.Atk) up
- Weapon/Elemental dmg up
Debuffs also share the same categories and types. In other words, debuffs have the same 3 categories (Skill, Passive, Special skill) and each category has 2 types of debuff:
- Atk/Mag (E.Atk) down
- Weapon/Elemental def down
Therefore, there is 6 brackets of buffs and 6 brackets of debuffs, each with their own 30% cap. Special buffs/debuffs have unique rules as you pointed out.
When I first watched the video and heard you say "All sources of damage up share the same 30% cap", I thought that you meant skill, passive, and special damage up share the same 30% cap, when that is not the case at all. It's better if you explain it like this instead of treating damage up as its own category.
I've been awaiting this one, keep up the great content!
Appreciate the quality videos Shizu... now if only Square Enix will go easy on the banners...
Good to know that "more damage against x'd enemies" and generic damage up are same capped. I'm used to those boost calculated in multiplication in other games.
I've been using Sofia+Wingate for a while, although fortunately my Sofia is not 50 yet so she still "benefits" from Wingate.
@ShizukatzCotC Great guide! Does boost/using bp affect buffs and debuffs?
I ~really~ like the way buffs and debuffs stack in this game; severity AND duration stacking is awesome! I also actually love the 30% caps, it forces some creativity and thinking rather than just stacking the same buff up to 100-200%. A very fine and informative video, thanks again!
What was the approximate timeline for Specials being introduced in JP? I'm quite eager for them.
Roughly around 1st Anniversary I believe. Bit of a ways off but will be a really exciting addition when it hits!
Are you going to be putting out individual guides for every 5* or just the S tier ones?
Nicely done and nice account
Time to rush out the Primrose guide video, since apparently that's the next unit we are getting. Global banner schedule is bonkers.
EN server is the wild wild west
Thanks for this amazing video. Question
So, Ultimates duration have their own duration that doesnt stack with any buffs that I already have.
Lynette's ultimate has a duration of 2 turns (So if she acts last [in a full thief team for example], my thiefs will benefit from her ultimate only 1 turn, right?)
So, special attacks came out when ?
Since GL server is crazy wild with the banners and content, i wonder how they will deal with it.
Last quick question, how to unlock them ?
I was hesitating about awakening viola to +2.
Thank you for the video, champ !
Would it be possible to add a Primrose comparison in the Lynette guide? Seems she will be coming to the game this week
great guide!
question: if sofia received a skill based ice damage buff would that increase the damage considering she already has the passive ice damage buff of 30%? I'm in doubt because of the damage up cap
Yes, it would, but such an ability doesn't exist yet :)
nice video.
Hey man waiting on your vídeo about primrose! I know she is good but cant decide about pull or dont ... im ftp and i have only 1.1k gems .... any advice? Ty i dont have lyneett, i do have fiora, sofia and viola.
Do you have a reference guide of all the different buff/debuff and also ailment icons. I get lost of what’s what exactly.
Buff and debuff matters a lot without them you will do no damage and you will be very vulnerable
Awesome video. Very informative, however I noticed 2 inaccuracies, I would love if you could clarify them.
1. For active buffs/debuffs, after applying them from 2 sources to hit the cap, do I have to re-apply both to maintain buff at cap or like with duration - any single one maintains capped buff ?
2. Doesn't DMG UP also have subcategories for weapon/elemental specific ? In case of Scarecrow/Wingate, giving him a emblem accessory doesn't hit DMG UP cap if he uses wind attacks, since bow DMG doesn't apply there. Or am I wrong ?
1. You do not have to reapply both. Reapplying either one will extend the duration for the full potency of the buff.
2. Yes you are correct. Basically the Dmg Ups will stack as long as it is the applicable damage type. Sorry for the confusion.
How does Theo's status resist passive work? It says it gives 50% to paired allies, so I'm assuming that the 30% cap doesn't apply to status resistance?
Ailment Resistance simply gives what it says, it doesn't abide by the 30% caps like the buffs and debuffs explained in the video.
Sorry for a new comment on an older video, Shizukatz, but how did you generate that in-battle buff description list for your Cyrus that is shown in the thumbnail? Is that feature missing for EN right now? Thanks in advance.
Yea this is currently JP only I believe.
It's accessed by clicking a character then clicking the topleft corner diamond where the turn counter would normally be.
Ones that are same unit and same % still stack if they're on different skills right?
e.g Sophia's -15% ice resist on wild icewind and raging icewind stack together for 30%?
Also do passive and active buffs of the same type will stack together normally with potency up to 30% and duration? or do each have their own 30?
They do stack up to 30%, yes.
As for Passive and Active buffs of the same type - they go towards their own 30%.
Do passive resistances work the same way? E.g. Gilderoy has 20% Wind resistance from passives. Buffing him with Theo's 20% Wind resistance and Mabel's 15% Wind resistance, does he reach 56% Wind resistance (20% multiplicative with 30%)?
Assuming he can receive resistance from other sources, is it possible to reach 100% Wind resistance and become immune to the element?
Do you think you could make a video on the 3 stars? I went back to watch your vid on the 4 star characters and noticed that you mention some of them. I was wondering if you could give your evaluation on all of the 3 stars. If it's not too much trouble of course. Also when i went to pull for heathcote i got viola(whom you stated would be useful long in the run)instead. Should i keep pulling for heathcote? After all, the reason i went for him is because i wanted one more 5 star and i did get one, just not him. One more thing, how do i gain access to the nut manual? it doesn't show up in the exchange for me. Do i need to complete more of the story? Sorry for the long comment.
To gain the nut manual, you must reach Clearbrook. Just keep doing the Master of All questline. You Entreat the item from an old man.
As for Heathcote, Shizu made a video on him. He's not really worth it.
@@RealRamaladni I see thanks for the information.
How does elemental resistance work? Sophia’s Wild Icewind lowers ice resistance by 15%. Does that mean she deals an extra 15% ice damage on any enemy with this debuff? Do all enemies have innate elemental resistance that can be lowered?
Each enemy has their own innate resistance stats, yes. Typically that stat is just the same across all elements, but they need to be separate in order to be able to lower each separate elemental resistance via debuffs.
Do buffs, buff characters or rows? I feel like since I have lynette, the best play is almost always to be swapping her in and out every turn, but if buffs are character based and not row based, any buffs to her or whoevers behind/front of her get largely wasted, throw in constant switching for healing/boosting, and I haven't been using buffs much since people rarely stay out long enough to take advantage of them before they're swapping, but if the buffs are row based and not character based, that would make them far more useful.
Buffs are applied to the character, not the row. Obviously yes it does mean that whoever is behind Lynette doesn't benefit from the 20% buff, but they can still be affected by the 10% passive buff.
This is another reason why Lynette is best suited to pair with a non-Damage oriented unit such as a healer or debuffer (like Theo or Viola as examples in the video).
@@ShizukatzCotC Okay, that's what I figured, really appreciate the confirmation and all your great content!
Will there be a video about smithing, I’ve gotten a few innocent weapons yesterday
And are innocent weapons better then meteorite weapons?
How i get , skilled hunters emblem?
come back ! and update this . u have a whole year worth of content pending
I've tried doing max buff for p.atk up for 2 rounds. It didn't increase the number of rounds it remained 2.
Since then I've kinda been avoiding buffs for now
What chara/skill was it?
@@ShizukatzCotC Idk it was on launch day and chars I haven't used since then. I just know it was 2 turn p.atk
Does regen item and theons regen stack up??? Or if i use theo only his regen will work?
They stack.
Does accessory buffs such as wind rune stack with passive skills such as wind argument?
They do indeed. And as mentioned in the video, the two share a 30% Cap. So on a character such as Sofia who already gets 30% Ice Damage Up, an Ice Rune would be useless on her.
@@ShizukatzCotC Got it. Thanks for the clarification! Really appreciate it!
when you use this many debuffs tho cant you use a nuke that the boss is not weak to and kill them anyway. idk how viable it is late game but ive been doing like aslyte viola lynette sofia and its just been taking everything out
It becomes much less viable late game, as you surmised.
Quick question, so can Sofia's 2 hit and 3 hit ice resist skill stack with each other?
It stacks the duration.
It stacks both in effectiveness and duration. Using both will lower the enemy's Ice Def Down by 30%.
Ah, I thought you were asking if the individual hits of the skill stacked together. I didn't think of using both skills separately!
Thanks a lot, i just replaced the 2 hit for the 3 hit, ill put them together now with the nuke then
Ok so if I have a 10% def up skill that lasts for 2 turns, and I apply a 20% def up skill that lasts for 2 turns after the first one, that will get you to 30% def up for 4 turns, and when you re-apply any of those you'll still have the 30% plus the extra turns you applying? I thought i had to re-apply both buffs, like they are running in different instances of the same buff icon? Hard to explain lol.
You are 100% correct. Anything you reapply afterwards will just extend the duration. The only time you have to reapply everything is if the entire buff runs out.
@@ShizukatzCotC Thanks, I had a great teacher.
How did you save 15,000 rubies!!??!
Hes playing since the release so 2 years already, unless is buying crystal from jp server
He never pulls Lmao but when he pulls he gets lucky pulls a lot in JP so far there is 148 travelers. 119/148 with seldom pulling is very very lucky draw.
How to do u have 16k gems
JP version has been out for 1 year 9 months.
You said you would be more careful with you background videos... Thanks you for the spoil. :/ Thank for the video guide too.
