In Earth's early days, it was slammed by protoplanet Theia. This left our world spinning on a tilted axis. But what if the Theia crash had flipped Earth 90 degrees? And why could living in Alaska help you live on a sideways Earth?

if earth started to spin side ways before life existed, life would evolve to adapt and would be completely different from any life today.
That's what I was thinking.. things evolved the way they did cuz of the conditions we have..
He said that all the ice would melt. but wouldn't the just melt form the pole experiencing summer and form on the poles experiencing winter? in this case, the pole with summer will cause the sea levels to rise, and the pole with winter would lower the sea levels, neutralizing each other, so it won'tbe that dramatic. Also the variation would decrease the nearer the equator gets, at the equator there would be a never-ending sunset .
4:59 they even made a run about it. During the summer solstice they do something called the "Midnight Sun Fun Run"
This is my favourite channel. I especially like it when you explain everything so nicely. I wish you a lot of success with the channel and happy life
Props to the cameraman for capturing Earth's impact with that mini planet. How else would we know all of this.
If the Earth's tilt was 90°, the area between the poles would be like a form of twilight zone. While the poles would be getting scorched and frozen over and over, the twilight zone may have relatively normal temperatures. Areas like North Africa, Central America, & Southeast Asia would be in the twilight zone.
Yes. I came here to say that
Kris Music my comment somewhere
I dont think you got that right. Sideways the equator would be always hot and poles always cold. The ammount of radiation reflected by our atmosphere is responsible for our seaons. Not the distance to the sun. Yes on the outer of the elipse the equator and tropicals would have their winter time, like now.... 5 degree less than usual and stormy/rainy. Its... its just wrong
@@mallobag Actually, that's wrong too. All parts of the planet would experience extreme seasons, with the equator experiencing the least extreme.
Every video you post after watching it I feel excited and smarter ☺
Uranus: time for you to feel my awful pain
Earth: *PLS NOOOOO :(*
I think you forgot to mention about the period of the transition of summer to winter and winter to summer.

If mars-sized planet were to collide with earth, there will be nothing but asteroid belt left behind. Earth originally had formed together with Saturn as it closely shares its axial tilt, before Sun captured Saturn with earth and seasons as we know began. Saturn transformed from brown dwarf into gas giant due to mass loss in cometary flaring. Physicist Wal Thornhill talks about it in Star Proto-Saturn video.
Earth’s gravity is still stronger than Mars’s gravity. While Earth would definitely lose some it’s mass, it wouldn’t be enough to completely destroy the Earth.
Cities would have to be shielded with some kind of dome structure.
Love your videos mate
It reminds us how we all have won the lottery. We are very lucky creatures. Then to be born in the 20th/early 21st century we’ve won the lottery a second time having all the best accommodations in life.
Love the deadly yet interesting scenarios, keep it up!!
Fun episode as always. Will the world be any different if the tilt was 180°? Like north on south pole & vice versa..!
Thanks for stopping by!
then the Earth will be upside down if it tilted 180 degrees
If the earth is tilted at 90 degrees, the equator would get 3 months of twilight follow by 3 months of regular day/night cycle, follow by another 3 months of twilight and then another 3 months of day/night cycle.
Excellent educational video 🌎

At 8 minutes and 48 Seconds on this video you see an image of PRECIADOS STREET in Madrid (Spain-Europe), a very Commercial Street with several Big Stores like FNAC, EL CORTE INGLÉS, SFERA....at the end of the image there is CALLAO SQUARE and GRAN VÍA STREET. I know this area very well since I have lived in Madrid pretty much all of my life.
If we were tilted sideways would there still be a narrow strip around the world that would feel either spring or fall like the entire year and look like a sun set or sun rise all year?
Love your channel! Do you know where can i find those background music?
Awesome video, Keep it up.
As long as earth is rotating, it will resist to any significant changes to axial tilt since planets rotate like gyro and will hold on to its axial tilt, unless collision overcomes that resistance or planet stops rotating. See "Gyroscopes in space" video by astronauts at ESA.
See NASA SR 71 Flight control instrumentation verification. All references and controls references based on a flat, stationary, non-rotating Earth.
A tidally locked Earth would cause extreme temperatures, making it inhabitable.
I'm wondering what would happen to the countries living in the equator, if the earth tilt 90°?
They would get temperate-zone seasons like Earth does now, with winter during both solstices, and summer at both equinoxes.
You should do a "What if all humans all of a sudden vanished from the planet," and talk about what would happen in the days months, years, decades, and centuries afterward.
pretty sure they did.
Already done

There was a show called "life after people"
Hiii ur vids so cool and thought provoking...
What if the collision didn't happen in the first place
collision with Theia also gave us the moon, so it would bear more consequences than just not happening. no tides would be a problem afaik
ongoing presence of Theia would require a trojan position afaik. you can place 2 objects in same orbit and both remain stable but they have to keep 60 degrees distance, if i remember correctly.
such a close Theia would be an obvious object of interest of observation and space travels. as it would stay in the goldilocks zone of sun like us: very interesting if any sort of live would bloom there too, completely separate from us.
What if Thea became Earth's moon instead of colliding with the planet?
@@evertonporter7887 depends on distance but tides would be weird, i guess
more a binary planet system than planet+moon
By the way, 80 - 100 degrees means Celsius in this video. For my fellow Americans, that’s 176 - 212 Fahrenheit.
Love what if videos
Question: will it continue to tilt until it's perfectly straight overtime?
" Gargantuan " new word learnt thanks
Hello What If. You are making great videos and I like them. I have one question: During autumn and spring, I mean when the Earth is at the middle of summer and winter seasons wouldn't we have normal day and night?
Spring and fall would have normal day and night, yes.
So fricking interesting!!! 😃
And thank you so very much to be so awere about gluten!!! 🏆
When i was a kid I've been thinking that Antarctica was a tropical forest before. And europe/asia were burried in ice including yellow sea and black sea because there is a possibility that Earth's axis that time was different and it will gonna happened again in the future.
That’s why my family and I have a wood stove. It’s what saved us in the 2016 winter.
my toxic trait is thinking i would survive this
We should be thankful the earth tilts at a perfect angle because if it tilts too much or too little life on Earth would not be possible.
2:58 - is that image from the Weather Song music? (that greek music, you know)
Everyone: Earth

love ur videos
How about this one:
WHAT IF: Earth rotated normally on its current axis, BUT it also rotated on a West/East axis ?
Would would that look like, and do ?
Would it balance our weather for the whole planet because the earth is constantly "mixing things up" - and distributing the sun's energy - constantly ?
Can you do a video on this scenario ?
I can imagine the earth tilting that much of a radius.
I Love your channel.
Nice video.
What If: uploads a video.
all life on earth: Ah Shit, here we go again...
5:04 "scorching 80-100 temperature"
Me: that's not too bad.
What if: "that's enough to boil water"
Me: oh, you mean Celsius. Sorry. I live in America.
They forget about weather and the ocean currents. Weather coverage may cover a lot of sun exposure drastically reducing the temp. But they did touch on the water levels, but even that would be short lived as the world pivoted and froze slowly as the poles changed. But yes humans would have to constantly move weekly to stay on the poles.
What if all roads are flat and straight?
For one, the weather would be different because of a change to the seasons.
I wonder how people just believe life came out of nowhere. Rationality and living creatures evolved in so advanced way from no where
For small minded people, they look for very easy answers sadly
How sad that people believe in a dumb book
@@dimensio_italian_magician so sad the people who don't know anything apart from few facts clear cut in environment thinks holy book to be dumb when they believe that a tornado striked and life came into existence. 😂

"jesus saved us"

What if we lived in a habitable gas torus? Like the one in Larry Niven’s “The Smoke Ring”.
one side is shivering and or probably freezing to death and the other is wearing spf 100 everyday, which one do you think its worse, temperatures you can deal with but you need a little bit of cold air, or, deal with the coldest temperatures you will ever feel and can most likely die to hypothermia?
your choice
If the Earth were spinning on its side, it would have a significant impact on the planet's climate and weather patterns. The tilt of the Earth's axis is what causes the seasons, with the northern and southern hemispheres experiencing opposite seasons at any given time. If the Earth were spinning on its side, the tilt would be different, which would change the way the sun's energy is distributed around the planet.
The change in the tilt of the Earth's axis would also affect the distribution of the sun's energy across the planet, which would change the climate and weather patterns. This could result in some areas experiencing extreme temperatures and weather conditions, while other areas may become much colder or drier.
The change in the tilt of the Earth's axis would also have a significant impact on the planet's ecosystems and the distribution of plant and animal life. It could cause significant changes in the habitats of many species, leading to extinctions, and altering the balance of nature.
It's important to note that the Earth's current axial tilt is a result of a complex interplay of factors, including the planet's orbit, rotation, and the gravitational pull of the Moon and other celestial bodies. Changing the tilt of the Earth's axis would require a massive amount of energy and it's highly unlikely that it would happen naturally.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If this happened, I would immediately move to Antarctica
Interesting thought.
What If the continents swapped positions?
Which ones would go where? You'll have to be more specific...

What if the sun rotated 10x Faster?
Uhh.. the Sun Is the center of the solar system and emits light from all sides. I don't think that It rotating faster could result in anything too bad.
Maybe more solar flares will come out
@@dimensio_italian_magician It will affect gravity
@@Kettlewhat21 how
I dont think you got that right.

Ahh now i got it. In the shorts it was poorly explained. You talk about permanent light. Yea the our planet would burn
Idea: What if all the planet's coliled with earth?
What if all magnets suddenly stopped working?
Wouldn’t they just build structures to protect the fields from the scorching Sun during the colder months? Even placing cities in a shield or bubble type of contraption to house the cities so them temperature could be regulated within?
If this scenario happened over a long time, yeah humanity would mobilize and adapt. Our brains and inventiveness are basically our animal super power.
U c God new this already
What if we put a giant dome around the moon like in Futurama (no not the lunar park I mean the one from the tv movie where they built a giant glass sphere around the earth)
What if the Earth and the Moon spun at the same speed or time?
moon is currently tidal locked; with any change in speed it would show us whole moon surface over time for a given location on earth.
but if Earth gets lazy and spins once every month only like moon does ? woah, this is a game changer. :)
great story for another "What If" for sure
what happens at the equator?
I hate when people try selling you stuff when u just want to relax .
WHAT IF The Earths rotation was East to West? Not stopping and changing direction, but be backwards from the start?
How you can believe the earth just happens to have the correct tilt instead of God making it that way is mind blowing!
It's impossible for this existence to be an accident
Shut up damn creationists. The bible is fake.
People invented "god" and wrote the "HoLy BoOkS".
What if earth was twice the size as it is today
more gravity which results in other human builds and maybe no air travel or even space programs :(
Then it should go on a diet and put the donuts away.
Anybody else laugh at the fact that the conclusion to 95 percent of these videos is “you will die” pretty much 😂
But the equator would be tempered, right?
