  • McDonald's is synonymous with fast-food in many parts of the world, but there is one country where it's failed to capture national attention. Iceland celebrated the fast-food chain when it entered in 1993, but a global economic collapse during the next 15 years forced McDonald's to exit the Nordic region. Watch this video to find out more.

The reason I heard was that the Icelandic proprietor quit going along with the franchises requirements to make the food exactly the way it was done on America. They wanted to include other things to offer the locals and it turned into a terrible mess. It was said, too, that the home office didn't receive their agreed to cut from Iceland and the man running the show at Mc D's only wanted the start up cash from America to help him set up a restaurant that he would then intentionally stiff them and do what he wanted and sell what he wanted, never planning on keeping it a McDonald's. So when America told him he had broken their contract he basically told them to screw off. When things got that bitter he told them, "Ok, sue me! " But I don't think they bothered and just went away. Is any of this true ? I'd really like to know.

Franchise requirements and the franchise contract is usually written........by Miami lawyers. It's pretty tight. If the owner "defaulted" on his franchise agreement it's on him, but the MCDonald's head office COULD have redacted the contract and then sold it to someone else, or kept the stores open at a loss, to keep the "name" in Iceland. they obviously chose not to., at that time.

From an old retired miner: The two tunnels were driven at the same time and are for the purpose of air circulation. Air is forced down one and comes back up the other. The crossovers with walls are made at intervals for the air to flow. As the tunnels progress, these have to be sealed off (called stoppings) to make the air go on to the next crossover.

Icelander here currently living in Japan, I'm an exchange student living in dorms and often hang out with the Americans and its ridiculous sometimes refuse to eat out or go get a tiny McDonald burger just cuz the food is too "expensive". One refused to go to a restaurant where she couldn't get anything for 10$ or less. Here I'm often eating out (too often) but I'm getting meals here for 10-20$ (food and drink usually alcoholic) and same meal in Iceland would cost up to 50$ if not more. Japan is also a island and has to import a lot, to me the strawberries here are cheap costing around 4-5$ a basket, same in Iceland would be 6-10$ even if locally grown. The Americans stutter at those prices. Don't seem to realise that not everything can be grown locally etc. In Iceland 6$ burger is something I would be very suspicious of because a good gas station burger is 7-8$ 10-12 if a a full meal fries and a drink.

Iceland is a rich country with high wages and some of the best living standards in the world, $6 for fast food is nothing to most who live and work there. America meanwhile has armies of poor people who are paid minimum wage or don't work, so cheap low quality food is very popular, I would even say mainstream culture. The fact that only 3 branches of Mcdonalds were opened shows that Iceland did not love their food. Quality is low and most people living there earn a good income...I am sure most were willing to pay more for a better meal, except during the 2008 financial crash when everyone in the country got screwed over.
