  • "One" is a song by Harry Nilsson from his 1968 album "Aerial Ballet". Nilsson wrote the song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep..." tone while writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes. A better-known cover version, recorded by "Three Dog Night" topped the charts in 1969.

ahh, the "falling asleep any second now" legendary backing track for the glorious mandola. I have some special kind of respect for people responsible for playing such melodically varied, almost baroque-sophisticated lines.

it's a fun tune - the Nilsson version didn't get enough airplay.

Not it did not and I am afraid I have to admit that I had not hear it until tonight after hearing your take on it and reading the notes. @@danbluedeer

What an amazing cover! This is the first time I've ever heard it as an instrumental, but I like it.

Awesome job Daniel! Did you know that the old phone busy tone is what inspired Harry to write this song?!

Sorry Daniel. I saw your video post at 4 am while sleeping on the couch battling COVID. I will check the notes next time before making a comment. It is surprising how many people don't know this song fact. My Ford Expedition has the same timing on the beeper when the door is open and I always wind up singing One to my wife!

sorry to hear about the COVID...I hope it doesn't last too long. That's amusing about your beeper. @@lessnodgrass1381

your choice of instruments for these arrangements always surprise me in the very best way.
Are you a fan of Jim Croce? i would love to hear what your take on some of his tracks. Him and Maury Muehleisen played off eachother so well. They're up their with Gordon Lightfoot in their ability to evoke emotion through fingerpicking

thanks! I enjoy the element of surprise in listening to others.
I'll give Croce a listen again - it's been a while - Time in a Bottle might be doable.

just for listening, i'd highly recommend his greatest hits. i think most people are exposed to Croce through Time in A Bottle, but my favourite has been "Photographs and Memories" & "I'll have to say i love you in a song"
