    I've got nothing to really base this on, but I always figured the Adjudicator was actually the bird "piloting" the chonk, kind of like a mech.

      That's exactly what it is. The demon controlling it obviously took an old heroes body, y'know seeing as SOS is where the old heroes were all buried , possessed it and the actual adjudicator itself is trapped at the top of a rotting, demon possessed corpse. pretty obvious stuff imo but then again, I play those games way too much.

    • @DajuOnYoutube
      @DajuOnYoutube Před 2 lety +23

      Well yeah, i'm pretty sure it's like a parasite that controls a big corpse so you're technically fighting the bird but can only reach it if the body falls over.
      Also I don't know how the sword sticking out of its gut could confuse him, the implication is obviously that before you showed up it had fought with someone else who stuck it there and injured it's otherwise super tough skin, pretty much suggesting that they were stronger than you because if you don't smack the wound it's basically immune to your attacks.

  • @reperfan4
    @reperfan4 Před 2 lety +156

    Alright, Demon's Souls is one of my favorite games of all time and since I can't find any other comments about it I'll explain the Adjudicator.
    To start with, it's important to note the level in which you find it and what went on there. The Shrine of Storms was a place where the tribe of Shadowmen conducted rituals by which they would more or less "process" the souls of the dead and then use those souls as an offering to their deity - The Storm King. Each boss in the world was a key figure in this "soul processing" ritual.
    To start with before explaining its role, the Adjudicator is not the big fat man. The Adjudicator is the crow itself. The big fat man is just a flesh puppet prepared for it so it could do it's duties. That duty being to examine new bodies brought to shrine and judge whether they were worthy sacrifices for the Storm King or not. Those that were deemed worthy were passed on to be offered to the Storm Ruler at the shrine below, while those that were deemed unworthy were eaten by the Adjudicator as a form of ritual cleansing, making sure that both the body and soul of the deceased were safely dealt with rather than being allowed to roam as vengeful spirits. That's why the Adjudicator's body wields meat cleavers that steal the life from enemies they hit, it's designed to consume both body and soul of those it devours.
    This ultimately turned the Adjudicator into a Demon, since in the world of Demon's Souls a "demon" is any being that is able to gain power by absorbing the souls of others into its own being. When the Shadowmen died out the Adjudicator lost its purpose as a being of judgement and instead devolved into one of gluttony and greed, consuming anything that came into it's reach rather than doing it's duty judiciously.

      To add onto what taylor w said, mara is the demon that is supposed to have tempted buddha, and failed to sway him to earthly pleasure. As well, they explain in one of the games that the shadows appear as gods/demons because they are a manifestation of human consciousness, and humans have worshiped stuff as long as human have existed. For the out of game reason, it is probably that having a character to base something on makes the design much easier then coming up with hundreds of new, unique characters with story and consistent design.

      The name comes from a buddhist demon, yes, but the visual design is based on the fact that its name also means penis in Japanese. This is taken one step further by having it resemble a wheeled shrine, possibly a reference to the Kanamara penis festival.

    For the first one; if the sword blades can rotate 360 degrees, it could use that like a propeller. Wouldn't really explain how it got off the ground, but baby steps. Now, if they didn't put that in, they could add it in a patch and it would be the wind up to an AOE attack. Just a thought.
    The adjudicator may be an awkward attempt at a deadly sin; Greed. If it's a shrine guardian meant to test the demon slayers and they fail so he eats them it could be a combo with pride. Both would explain his greater mass; the no head could be a blind point as in he doesn't see how greedy he really is - so it would also be an inverse criticism of his own flaws. Which as much as they've been the downfall of those before you, will also be his. Thinking just one more and I'll be strong enough... Then your MC comes along and, nope! I could also be entirely wrong and it's just some Dev with all the Lulz.
    As far as the contra entry - there are a lot of Devs that end up in the family way during development. I'd argue abstract expression of internalized fears due to impending parenthood and how many things cannot be controlled in the process, that can go wrong. But again, I don't get paid as that guy/girl's psychotherapist. I'd probably be much better off if I did though. (I'd hate to see that bill; it'd make me jealous)
    7 - copious amounts of LSD. That's all I got. How else would you make a hermit crab feel ten feet tall? o. O maybe we should just ask Alice? But then raccoons might get involved...
    I think the harder you look at the rest; the closer you get to the abyss. So I throw my hands up. I don't think you're supposed to look for an explanation for some of these Devs' ideas.
    Probably safer for your own sanity that way.

      Lack of sleep, however, seems like the most logical explanation. I've seen stuff, unexplainable stuff, due to my inability to sleep properly. Mix that in with massive amounts of stress and coffee, or other simulants, and you got yourself a cocktail of commotion for the brain. Those devs put up with way more than they should!

    Recently came back to this because I remembered a really out of there boss. In the game Radiata Stories, a JRPG for the PS2, there is a boss in the secret dungeon that is just completely out of place. So the dungeon is themed on the different elements of the game Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. At the end of each section you fight an elemental dragon. When you beat all four you unlock a new path which leads you to a 'hidden' dragon. At first you may think it is the Silver Dragon or maybe the Gold Dragon, it is neither. You find Radian. Radian is a 2D dragon that literally was created by a child. It is also one of the harder bosses of the game. It has belly flop attacks and attacks with speech bubbles. Radiata Stories isn't necessarily a serious game but this is one of the fights that really came out of left field. I will also mention the Gabriel boss fight in a later hidden dungeon but that is more awkward than batshit insane.

      Immediately after the fight, the entire party AND boss are suddenly shown in the normal world (which would be impossible if the villain just remade the universe/world) followed by the boss exploding while everyone else rushes out of the fallen moon before it blows up. We are then treated to cut-scenes showing the heroes returning home, and their "happily ever after" moments, which also couldn't happen if the world had been remade in the villain's image.

You could look at Hojo as "Shin-ra" but if you really follow the story hojo was always about his agenda, he even openly mocks the Shin-ra execs. At the end of the game you are in an Atari Asteroids-style shmup where you are fighting glowing orbs made out of the credited team names. More interesting still is that you can request the assistance of other players who have sacrificed their save games, then leaving you with the option to do the same.

    Shinra isn't just a modern day weapons development/power company.
    Research and development (ran by Hojo. The immoral Baby Daddy scientist), has been experimenting on the lifestreams energy as well as the calamity known as Jenova. Yielding machines like these, as well as some of the monsters throughout FFVII

IDK if it was an in game line, or in the owners manual or a strategy guide, but there is a line somewhere that tells you you can't hurt one of K Rool's minions. To just avoid them until they wear themself down. It's a relatively common trope in older games. How many bosses have you had to make charge into electrified columns or explosive barrels?

    Swordipede makes perfect sense. Say you have a giant reactor or massive important server room. Just flies up and down the walkways and slices everything in its path with no collateral damage.

    The Swordepede has a perfectly good use to Shin-ra. Do Recall before this era of "peace" Shin-ra was at war with Wutai. Wutai, a pastiche of every far-eastern country, has Jungles, huge chasms, and a great number of mountain ranges. A flying blade covered remote controlled or automated robot would be able to clear the Jungle, won't fall into pits and can traverse even the winding bridges from mountain to mountain. It's perfect and built to Purpose.
