- Learn how to BRAKE on skates? Inline skating tutorial with 3 wheel skates
TRISKATING - means inline skating on 3 big wheels - is THE new skate trend. Powerslide as trendsetter and pioneer of this new big wave offering a wide range of TRISKATES for all kinds of disciplines - from speed skating to fitness skating, from freeskating to off-road skating.
We also care a lot about "safer skating" and therefore teamed up with Asha Kirkby from Skatefresh. Asha travels extensively offering skate workshops all over the world.
skatefresh.com/ offers online training in the form of instructional video courses in the themes of general skating, stopping techniques and fitness/speed skating (20% of which are available for free).
This series of "Three wheel skate tutorials" is split into episodes for absolute skate beginners, intermediate level skaters and advanced level skaters. Asha will demonstrate how to handle your Triskates and will teach you the different stopping techniques to make sure you have great fun with your new Triskates. We also plan a special series for kids also. Enjoy the videos and enjoy skating on Triskates!

Glad to see a triskate can have a heel brake, none of the ads show it.
Maybe it's not considered cool to use it, but I'd rather stop the way I'm used to than break my bones trying to look cool.
I'm 48, I should be careful with my body, and cool is overrated anyway.
all of our fitness skates do come with a brake + all of our urban skates can be upgarded with a perfectly fitting brake if needed. most of our team skaters prefer the non-brake version but of course, as you said, safety is key and we also prefer security and a safe stop over coolness. thanks for your support!
I am 45 and am just learning, too! I agree.
...just started and have never skated before, @@jartutoles9538 - I'm 55!
I’m 53. Wish me luck!
Same here! The wheel size looks great for our rough trails, but at 59 I am not up to T-braking learning curve.
I am a beginner and I really wan't to try your stopping trick in the next days. For some reason stopping is a lot harder than skating to me :D
agreed
Agreed!
Agreed
I think stopping is harder than skating for everybody. Same in skiing.
Can I have this woman narrate my life?
I learned so much. You are a great teacher for the people that haven't been skating for the last 15 years!! Got my new K2 Trio 100 LT!!
Hi everyone 🙏💞👋 Asha love your videos, precise and simple to understand. I'm 56 and have just bought my first inline skates from Extreme Skates Milton Queensland ❗ I'm very happy with them and Extreme Staff were fantastic. Starting off with pottering about in my kitchen with micro movements and practicing and learning from your techniques before I venture into the wider world.👍💞🙏
the sound of my brake always scares people infront of me
Lol
Ha ha
Asha is amazing!
thanks for your insights , getting these
You are awesome, your skills, your voice, everything. Thank you for this great lesson.
Going to try soft brake, I am a beginner on 3 wheels, thanks for the video
2:41 damn that backwards stride looks awesome, any tutorials on that? never seen anything like it
Tried it and finally learned how to stop with this video after trying a lot by myself and getting no where
I tottaly agree that the heel brake is important. For me, it's the best way to control my down hill speeds. For one, it's safer then T-dragging when I'm going 28 mph on short steep hills. I've only been skating for about 4 months now, I'm getting better at use the the slolom to slow down, but I will never take the break off. I'm 47 yrs old, I don't care about looking cool lol
Very good tutorial
Thanks!
Fantastic! Finally someone that showed the difference in wheel base length. That shows a lot. Maneuverability. Thank you. Question: With a four-wheeled skate rotating keeps wear and tear even. With a "tri", the front and rear obviously wear more. Have you felt any abnormal rocking because of the less wear in the middle wheel? Thank you again.
thanks for the feedback! about wear and tear: this always is connected strongly to your personal skating technique, if you push more from your toes or double push more often, skate backwards/fakie a lot and even frame positioning. we haven´t noticed any difference when changing wheels to a 4 wheel setup. best advice would be to check which wheel has the most wear and place it in the middle. if all done correctly, this will make your wheels last longer, both on 4 and 3 wheel skates =)
I was really thinking to return my shoes because I could not balance but after seing your videos I leart it thanks
glad to hear that, thanks!
May not matter at this point but its been very informative.
and of course, it's all about keeping your balance and that stance that matters.
Excellent explanation. And heel stop 2 is cool!
By the way, instead of saying "not to stop" in phase 2, you could consider saying "we practice slowing down".
I’m an advanced skater and about to finally move from intermediate skates I’ve used for years and years to roller derby elite alpha 110mm 3 wheel inline skates that don’t come with brakes and I love to go up and down large hills so I need to be able to brake
I love the heel brake out of all the stopping method.
It is good but unreliable when going really fast.
I saw this is a soft boot right ? It's will be good more hard boot or not for 3 wheel.
Wonderful asha. BIG Greet from Brussel roeselare..👍☺
should brake foot be in front or does it not matter?
Thanks great video.
glad we could help!
And now I know how to properly scissor 😀
Is there a drastic difference between 100s and 110s? Would it be worth the wait to hold off and get a 110 or if a 3 wheel 100 is available, go with those?
110 will roll more and be a little more comfortable on rought surface....
Awesome video as usual. I have one question! Hope you can help me, please. I am trying to resume rollerblading after so many years (>20 years)... Which kind of inline skates can you suggest me to get? The 3 or the 4 wheeler one?!?!! Also, I have seem some with the wheels' diameter bigger like the all the 3-wheeler but even in four-wheeler. Any difference in the diameter regarding the purpose? Thanks beforehand.
yes actually if you already know how to skate on 4 wheels .... you should try 3 wheels with bigger size it bring more easy speed and more comfort. Pascal Briand
ok... I've tried trail skating twice...I've only had my skates for a little over a month. it's a nightmare for me to transfer to/from trail to crosswalk skating. how do you deal with cracked/broken.pavement? our city honestly has lousy streets.
@Powerslide inline skates: thx Powerslide,, thx Asha .. (y)
Do you have any videos with ramp skating with the three wheels? And how hard are these wheels? For me, my experience, it is the harder the wheel, the more smoother the skating. On another post, Poweslide said tricks can be done with the larger 3 wheels.
have a look at our partner brand kizer and their 3 wheel ramp frames with a ufs mount: czcams.com/video/PpO7UMFUR9o/video.html
Are you able to stop in parallel slide with these three wheeler skates? or only the power slide as you demonstrated? although, you are not using the 125mm wheels, but could you do it with them? I skate with Powerslide Marathon 4 x 110, but I am unable to do the parallel slide with them.
I am currently injured with a serious hip problem so i can't do parallel Slide right now in any wheel sizes. It put too much strain on my injury. Personally I have always used the forwards entries into Powerslide because compared to the Parallel slide they are so much easier AND more effective. I like ease and efficiency over difficulty any time, but especially now when my body is suffering from an injury, I need to take it slightly easier. The larger wheels will make parallel slide more difficult to execute yes. Good luck!
I am sorry to hear about your injury, I bid you my earnest wishes for a prompt recovery. You have answered my query in any case. I was not requesting you to execute the slide, but simply asking if it could be done. Thanks!
Hi! Are there any brakes for PowerSlide Next 150 mm?
Hi, yes, have an SUV brake which also fits on the Powerslide Next Edge 150! It looks like this and is available: der-rollenshop.sportkanzler.de/Powerslide-Trinity-SUV-Brake
Can you post where to get quality wrist guards from? I ordered a pair and they were too stiff and uncomfortable

I want to learn to turn like you did in specifically 2min20s please make a video for it especially please
This is the Backwards Inverted Mohawk and I have already filmed a detailed lesson on this skill. You'll find it in the Skatefresh Advanced App on Android or iPhone. It's one of my favourite 'signature' moves. Glad you spotted it.

Let me know how you get on with the lesson.
When applications will be free I will upload
The Skatefresh apps are not free I'm afraid (they took me 14 months of work to make). If you'd like a free bundle of new videos sign up here for instant access and choose between Beginner/Improver level lessons or Intermediate/advanced.

Does anyone know the brand of her skates?
powerslide SWELL
Totally understand how the benefit of larger wheels influence roll and speed and the necessity to go to 3 wheels helps to allow the shorter wheel base distance for better maneuverability. However, I don't quite understand how a 'middle' wheel is better for power transfer. Please explain... Thanks.
Hi John,
The middle wheel helps with power transfer and turning because its located directly under the middle of your foot, allowing for more efficient striding. If you look up a pair of frames called "Wizard frames" (you can numerous "test them out" videos on youtube) you'll see that those frames were designed with a "natural rocker" setup, meaning that the third wheel is slightly elevated, allowing you to pivot and turn more effectively. Although those frames are designed to use 4 wheels, those concept is pretty much the same for these skates and those frames. :)
*you can find numerous....* sorry
can someone advise me on which to get? 100, 110 or 125mm wheels? Will mostly be using for cardio, speed and fun, distance..thank you in advance.
syuxzter me too. Im pissed nobody answered you
The 110 are for long distances and have the speed you need. The 125s are for more advanced skaters and the 100s arent as quick as the 110s. I hope i answered your question.
so, are these faster than 4 wheels of the same size? looking to upgrade my Tempest 90 c inlines with the 110 setup Rollerblade offers
no, these will not be faster then 4x same size wheels, but close to similar speed. the beauty of our triskates is that you are more agile with the same size wheels because of the shorter length in general. speed is equal, maybe a little bit less then on 4 wheels. BUT: usually because of the frame mounting and frame designs, the 3 wheel version is always lower than the 4 wheel version. so you gain not only agility but also lots of control by the lower center of gravity. if done right, you can skate bigger wheel sizes with triskates and be on the exact same hight than with smaller wheels on 4 wheels. = 3x110mm can be the same hight as 4x100mm and so on. for your 90mm version, a well designed 3x100 mm frame will be faster, same hight and more agile. 3x110 might be slightly higher then 4x90, still shorter and more agile, but 10 times faster.
That was such a magnificent explanation, and I apprectiate the information so so much! I'm going to try three wheeling it now for certain! The Rollerblade Urban Pack frame settup will probably be the direction for me. So excited and seriously, thank you very much!
these wheels she is using are they 125MM?? or 110mm??
does anyone know?
hello, she is on 110mm wheels
Heber Hernandez yes 110 mm all the way :) i just got my even 1 year later than this video
Crazy but i have never used my brake I always have the habit of removing it when I 1st get my skates
Cooool....
I don't even stand straight on the 3 wheelers skates. M banding again and again what should I do... Is it a sign that I may never learn 😔
You can off set the frame to compensate for your posture or practice with 1 skate on and 1 shoe and rotate it around. Gently push and lift your shoe foot and glide on 1 foot as straight as possible on your skate. This will help you build up your confidence, your connective tissues and your balancing muscles and help you skate on your skates with straight wheels. Furthermore make sure that your skates are tight enough as many people leave themselves too much loose which makes it very difficult to stay straight on the skates.
where can I buy this brake? I can't find it anywhere!
Peter Brown you can get it at inlinewarehouse.com
👍👍👍
can a beginner start with tri skates
no problem , triskate can have short frame that are very easy to manouevre
I noticed that skating up hill in my 3x100s are more difficult then 4x90s.
3X100 should be easier up hill than 4X90s and 4X100 should be harder than 4X90 due to the fact that 3X100 has less friction and thus less resistance to movement. You may need to relearn technique as the larger the wheel the higher up your center of gravity. Using the same positioning as your 90s will not give you the proper force and you have to dip down a bit more.
Where is the first video?
These were all filmed in Rio de Janeiro where I spend my winters.
Hi which powerslide skates are good for men.. not asking for professional one .. just want for daily practice..
the best skates are the ones that fit your feet right :-) for just daily inline skating sessions, try out our powerslide phuzion skate line, great in price-value and really really comfortable with great features & high quality parts.
Powerslide Inline skates kindly share the link for product... Actually my weight is 98kg so just want to get one that fit better
ok, if you are around 100kg of weight you might want to consider trying a pair of our urban skates for maximum support while skating
www.powerslide.com/Urban-Skates
my first thought would be hc evo pro skates, as those are heat moldable and will provide enough support for your feet
One more question is there any way to buy your products in india
we hope there is ;) please contact powerslide@powerslide.de for our dealer informations in india
Just powerslide or power stop.
what is the name of the skate asha has
?
asha was on an older model of the Powerslide Swell skates
how to skate from forward to backwards
Put “Asha Kirkby transitions” into the search field.
3:18 actual braking lesson starts
where can i buy triskates and what skates are used in this video
These are the Swell 110s Green by Powerslide. Try their website and any good skate shop should have them.
i was going to save up for some adapt skates but these are giving me doubts about the adapts , is the difference really that great between these skates and maybe any of the top range 4 wheel skates ?
i knw its a tricky question to ask as i cant even imagine how i would start complaining 2 top range skates but i thought its worth an ask as ur one of the few ICP level 3's out there
InlineWarehouse.com has them !!! :)
Is there any cheaper triskates out there as a way for me to try them out before i invest in high end ones like these ?
Yeah! We have Tri Skates starting at $159! Here is a link to our Powerslide skates where you can see those lower priced Tri Skates: www.inlinewarehouse.com/Powerslide_Inline_Skates_Men/catpage-PSSKAMEN.html

Romario. Bonne chance. www.skatefresh.com/apps
thank you, but the application is not free
No Im sorry it is not. I worked full time on the apps for 10 months as they are the highest quality product in inline skating on the market. You won't find better online instruction. And none else teaches that move because Im one of the few people who uses it... Its really worth learning.
The actual braking lesson, which is only how to use the factory-supplied heel brake (not a powerstop, T-stop, hockey stop, etc), begins after the four minute sales pitch for Powerslide Inline Skates; the heel brake tutorial starts at 4:00 min
This is the beginner breaking video. The next one is lower intermediate level stopping. The videos are in a series and the skills featured will become progressively more difficult. If you are patient Im sure you will hopefully find the future videos more appropriate for you. We wanted to give a range of techniques in the tutorial series.
What a beatifull lady Asha, from Italy with love
mille grazie!
I would not use her stopping trick if you are a beginner if you bent backward you could fall
she also covers in another video the proper stance while skating. But when using the heel brake method. You do start to crouch down like she demonstrates. But it's always about balance and of course...practice! Over time I suspect you get better and better and don't have to do that as much.
Demn i bought three wheels skate without heel brake
why is she throwing her arms around like that? Can she not balance on those skates or is that how she always skates?
No she is just showing us how to stop she doesn't always skate like that.

How to correctly use the heel brake:
Step 1, remove the heel brake.
Step 2, stop some other way.
I would agree with you only when that person can safely balance on one skate for several metres (which is the pre-requisite skill for T-Stopping which is essential if you skate without a brake). The fact is the majority of skaters are not "naturals" and cannot balance on one skate for several metres until several months into their skating life, and in this time the heel brake certainly works to build their balancing skills, basic confidence and allows them to be safe when out practicing in those important few months.
You were probably one of the naturals who could stop with various methods when you first started. Well done for having it already. But your opinion is potentially dangerous for an average beginner adult to follow. In my experience. Different suggestions work for different people and it's unwise to blanket advise the removal of brakes.
Would you tell your friend to remove the brakes from their bicycle and tell them to rub their foot on the floor instead (like a T stop)? This is my favourite heel brake debate question.
It's one of my favourite topics.....as you can see.
Well if it helps people with low agility to learn than that's great but I never want to see an experienced skater use one. I would say that training wheels on a bike is a better analogy than the brakes (even though they are both brakes haha) because while they can be helpful in the beginning, you certainly don't want to have to rely on them forever. At speed a heel brake will pull you up after a good couple of meters but a hockey stop will pull you up instantly which may be enough to avoid that little kid that jumped out on the pathway.
I have read other peoples responses both neutral and seemingly angry on this topic, and I think your take is what makes you a good teacher. I am a teacher as well (not of skating), and a bad new skater. The understanding that people come with different skills and pick up different aspects of skating is very important for someone in your position and it is appreciated.
I am struggling with T-stops and slides are next to non-existent at this point, but I do keep trying. It is very reassuring to have a break on (don't always have it on) for when I need it. It is especially good for stopping in a straight like in pedestrian traffic if needed.
I am very excited to see where this attempt at learning to skate properly at 54 yo leads me.
Thanks for the great videos.
I can stop without a break but wheels are pricey:P Therefore I still choose to use a break for cruising.
Nonsense... I'm a natural I think, starting to learn powerstops after a week.... but what you do when you suddenly encounter a steep slope without space, drag your wheels down the whole way? It's also a great way to control speed for me if I'm tired because it doesnt't need much effort or concentration... If I can, I use other stopping methods, 'cause I hate the aweful sound it makes but that's no reason to take it off unless you ride stairs or ramps...

Dab
Large wheels do not accelerate faster.
Hockey stops are easier
I completely disagree with the heelbrake philosophy. I found it no easier to use as a beginner than the drag brake, and when you learn the heel brake first the only thing you're doing is creating an unnecessary dependancy on something that can limit your mobility.
I think dependency on any one skill or method is not advisable. But learning Stopping methods in a sequential order (from easy to more difficult) just makes sense and allows skills to be acquired one by one and more deeply. I would never want a skater to remain with just a heel brake if they had the capacity to learn and do more things.
I agree with you, Asha. The heel brake is a useful assurance when people are learning. It doesn't create a dependancy as long as you move on once you're feeling more confident. One good fall from a beginner without a heel brake and confidences are hard to build back up!
it's all about baby steps I'd say for this. I'm back into blading after a few years and I will say balance and proper stance are key. Learn the basics with balance. It's not going to be easy for us beginners, but learning is part of it. Once you've gotten good at heel brake then trying another method. But really learning to slow down/stop is what matters most despite the method.
people dont know how to heel brake? probably shouldn't be on skates. I think i learned that instinctively when I was 5 years old trying on my first pair of blades.
