    I have seen over 5 videos of different people trying to teach the forward crossover, and THIS is the only one that has managed to teach me. Your video has been the only one to actually break down the crossover into 3 parts. No other video taught me how to scoot, and that simple movement was so integral to my success, as well as the reset, and step. It all makes sense now. Thank you.

    Hands down you're the best at breaking it down. I skated from 6-12 years old. Roller hockey and speed skating classes. I did all this stuff without even thinking about it back then. Im 32 now. Waiting for my skates to come in the mail. Can't wait!

    This video not just explains crossover turning in great detail, it also explains the issue people have with the brakes on. I had the exact same issue but so far I could not find any other video talking about it. Great job with the explanation!

    So let me rehearse the steps you take in this video:
    1. Gliding on center edge, by scootering on the pushing foot. (You go straight ahead.)
    2. Gliding on outside edge, by scootering on the pushing foot. (You go either left or right.)
    3. The stepping turn: heading for crossover without actually doing it completely. ("Just to be inline", as you name it.)
    4. Several scoots, crossover and then gliding into toe roll. Great way of improving the pressure on the crossing leg. (And bending the front knee.)
    5. The crossover itself: 1.Push. 2. Cross. 3 Regroup.
    6. Underpush: extra speed after having made the crossover with the other leg.
    7. Heelstopper? No prob', as long as you bend your knees (enough.)
    Thank you Asha. :)

    Quick alternating crossovers from the right to left and vice versa is still one my most favourite skating moves as it can help you change direction fast as well as avoid objects quickly while still maintaining a good speed.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos Před 7 lety +6

      That is very true and it's also a great drill for working the weak side crossover in combo with the godo side. Speed is often an issue with the weak side not being ok at higher speeds, so starting slower is the secret. Changing direction with crossovers is the best feeling.....

  • @JvD1985

    I was was 11 (24years ago) when I skated for the last time.
    Couple off weeks ago I bought the Powerslides NEXT 125 and it's like riding a bicycle, you never forget it. Needed 5minutes of finding the trust that this would be a piece of cake I was skating like 24years ago. Even the forward crossover was no problem. I admit it was a bit scary to do it, but after 2 corners it was easy.
    You don't need to be a pro skater, its just a trusting issue to overcome, because the movemen itself isn't harder then skating itself.

    I’m a 65 y/o crazy dude from the even crazier U.S. of A. who is much more ‘balanced’ (in every sense of the word, alas) when I’m on my skates than during any pedestrian moment. To roll along the paved surfaces of the land is my moving meditation and my only way of achieving that blissful state known as ‘no mind’, when all the tumultuous and often traumatizing mental chatter just disappears and all is just blessed flow. The perfect antidote to PTSD. Yes!!! Asha you are awesome. Not JUST because you’re a beast on wheels, LOL, but because you have such passion and CHARACTER! Just the kind of person I feel I would get an infusion of ‘chi’ or ‘shaktipat’ or whatever the appropriate term for that transfer of vital life force would be, should I be fortunate enough to stand in close proximity to you and let that strong, passionate voice of yours wash over me and activate all the blissful skating energy that lays dormant within all whom, like myself, would rather roll than plod!!! LOVE you! And obviously your masterful teachings as well. Namaste, guru.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Před 5 lety

      Indeed.
      One of the things we use with novices in ice hockey, is simply having them waling from side to side while crossing over their feet. No forward motion, just waling side to side crossing over. 10 steps one way, then 10 steps the other way. One step forward and add a step in each direction. Once the rink has been crossed, the exercise is over, and we can usually go directly to alternating crossovers with three in each direction slowly slaloming traffic cones on the ice. This way you will also avoid developing a dominant side when crossing over. You can do something similar on grass. Simply learn your muscles to do the cross, that's the most important thing.

    I like to do alternate crossovers, that way you don't have to turn in circle (just zig zag forward, it's good to give muscles a little rest). In fact this was one of the very first moves that I learned and it came rather easy (maybe it's more difficult on 110mm and larger skates, though).

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos Před 7 lety

      Alternate crossovers are not an easy move so you must be a fairly natural 'beginner' as it's unusual for skaters to find that move easy. Yes it's a good move for training both sides and especially to develop your weaker side crossovers. Well done you.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Před 5 lety

      @@SkatefreshVideos
      While that is true, it's a rather important and good skill to have. One of the things that is important to remember, is that it's not about speed when learning alternating crossovers and crossovers. It's like learning a proper crossover. Instead of learning a "fast" step turn, I think it's better to learn a proper slow crossover. This will also force you to push with the inside skate, and you can even do it alternating as a novice. Put say 10 bottles of water in a line, with 3-4 yards between them. Start slow, and alternate between left and right with three crosses in each direction. This will not only teach you both directions and the direction change, it will also force you to push with the inside skate.

    Hi Asha, I see a lot of street skaters using cross overs not only to turn, but to pickup speed when accelerating forward. I tried doing that but always ends up turning and in danger of encroaching the boundaries of the track in which I am skating. I was wondering if you can make a tutorial for that technique?

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Před 5 lety

      You don't use crossovers to gain speed in a forward direction, it's for maintaining speed or accelerating in turns. Once you're straight, you do normal strides. One of the things we do in ice hockey, is using crossovers in direction changes after a stop. During the stop, the feet are turned 90 degrees in the direction your traveling, but once stopped, we just do one step over the inside foot and if needed, a second step again. After these two steps, we're going full blast with forward strides. If someone is using some kind of odd crossover to gain straight line speed, one can only wonder why. If it made sense, trust me, both speed skaters and NHL players would do it. After 30 years of skating, I can perform most moves, and using a crossover to gain straight line speed simply sounds wrong, and I've never seen it done.

    Don't know why exactly, but the regroup part is what kills me... I'm able to do it, but que outside of the ankle from the leg that is doing the regroup hurts a lot. After a few crossovers, my practicing day is practically ruined, and I can't barely skate anymore.
    I tried those 3 days ago, and I feel the outside of my ankle hurting til this day.
    Is there anything I might be doing wrong? I noticed that my feet turn a lot when doing that, though it feels why less than I see in your videos, and videos from other people... Normally, that's when my ankle hurts a lot, and imediatlly.
