  • In this video I'm teaching you the easiest 2 ways to get up and down curbs safely. Curbs are an essential skill to have perfected if you want to street or city skate without incident.
    I demonstrate the correct ways and shows you 3 common mistakes which skaters make when starting to do curbs and how to fix them. This lesson also includes an easy first jumps drill. Filmed by @natsufrikroller

    I was just scared by a dog that chased me aggressively off a tall curb & I just stayed calm and rolled off of it. The fear of the angry dog & my ability to stay on balance & remain calm in my stance caused me to naturally just do it. Same experience with a big hill I was forced down by a car that cut me off, now it’s my favorite hill. ♥️💁‍♀️✌️

      Once when I was skiing, I suddenly realized there was a 10-foot drop in front of my that I had missed because of the way the sunlight was hitting the snow. I realized I had no time to avoid it or stop, so I just bent my knees a little and thought, "Well, I guess I'm about to break my legs." I ended up landing it perfectly and became addicted to jumps after that.

    Jump over, knees high, maybe a grab. Collect congratulations ;)
    Usefull though for beginners. Passive leg front, supportive leg back, weight on support leg and just roll. From my experience Curbs are just like bad concrete. You have to roll through in a stable position.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 4 lety +4

      Indeed thats a good comparison. However if you are rolling too slowly then the rolling off doesn't work and each skate clocks off the curb one by one and that can be a bit of a nightmare for beginners. So they need to have the stepping method first to use if they find they've not got enough speed to scissor off. It seems like nothing but many new curb skaters are afraid to use the correct amount of speed. Its a vicious circle. There are so many more methods for other levels yes....

    Great tutorial! Definitely best to approach curbs at a diagonal.
    I've went to step up curbs head on a few times without thinking about it and since I extend my leg so far forward it throws me off balance for a second! Plus when you put weight on your front foot in order to step up, it's already so far forward it tends to shoot further ahead and you start to do the splits!

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 4 lety +2

      I didn't include 90 degree curbs which is approaching head on. That needs scissor approach with weight on back foot. I call this move "The Pendulum" because you felt yourself, your head needs to make a forwards backwards movement as you step from the back foot in scissor, up the curb to front foot (bent knee!) and then back to back foot in scissor up the curb. Makes way more sense in a video. Try practicing that move on the flat without a curb. make the timing quick as you don't have much time to lift the front and then back skate before wheel hit curb...... This is all in my detailed How to Street Skate online course that Im still producing....

      Well spotted! It's so common. Watch again just before I take the wide step over the curb (3:36) in Problem 1, that I deviate from the skating line and aim more parallel to the curb. That skates parallel to the curb moment is fatal as the ONLY way down is a wide step and your weight has to move sideways. This is never a good idea on skates......so fix your skating line (bottle of water on floor) and stick towards! You'll when you do because it feels so smooth and like nothing happened.

    I'm a new quad skater and hope this principle transfers to quads. I figure I will also learn inline skating but I want to significantly improve my quad skills first so as to not confuse the different techniques. I like that Asha doesn't try to be cute and goofy in her tutorials. I've noticed with a couple of the good instructors here in America they try to hard to be entertaining. Different style, I suppose. I like Asha's style of teaching.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před rokem

      Yes the techniques and principles I share for inline tutorials work equally on quads, in fact I see it all as 90% identical, just stopping is slightly different when stoppers or heel brakes are used. But everything else is the same.
      I'm a coach and instructor and being entertaining isn't really my style. I'm slightly funny in real classes with real people but that's not my main aim. My main aim is to teach people to be better on their wheels. Glad you see this in me. You are meant to be my student that's for sure. I always say this is a channel for "Technique Geeks" like me.

    Even I always say it’s just a matter of time, but it’s safe to say tackle a new trick of different levels must follow slow to normal procedure, visualize what you are going to do, and try, no rush, make skating part of your life, may be once a day, may be once a week, as long as you do it consecutively, in the long run you’ll find the result. Good luck and be safe!

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Right, most people just focus on the final result. While it's important to do so, to visualize yourself conquering the top, it's also important to enjoy the whole process of learning. The time to master something new varies from one person to another and going reckless from the get-go without prior small steps generates frustration, and it's the cause of falls and injuries.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety

      Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh. Why do you find it terrifying? If you can drop off curbs like Asha does in this video that's exactly the same feeling you have landing on flat pavement without a curb. The trick to stay stable while jumping is 1) to avoid what Asha calls 'the windmill of death' and 2) to use your legs as a spring, bending your knees before and after the jump. To pass over a crack, manhole, etc. you don't need to make a great effort, you just need the momentum provided by that 'spring' being released. You can practice that spring first on grass until you get confident, then static on tarmac, and then while moving. I guarantee you will not be terrified anymore. For more details check this other video czcams.com/video/YMC4ZQ42d_4/video.html

    I have aggressive skates (large oysi frames) and although I ride 4 wheels there's still a large H block gap that tends to get stuck on the curb when riding off, unless I'm going very fast. I usually can't seem to go too fast towards curbs on or off because the ground becomes too unstable. Either that or I go real fast and jump the whole thing. But I notice pro aggressive bladers have no issues with any type of curb. I guess I need more practice overall 🥴

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The problem may not be the H-block itself but the anti-rocker setup instead. Are you using a flat setup? With a flat setup there shouldn't be a problem. However, depending on the model, even with a flat setup the H-block may represent a big gap. In that case, just hop the curb. It doesn't need to be a high jump.

    Is Enrolling on your online courses really sufficient to get me gliding like you?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety

      Well, enrolling is the first step, then you need to watch the videos of the skills you are most interested in learning. Then you practice the exercises one by one each time you skate regularly, focussing on the things identified in the course. The common problems section of each skill will help you identify if you are making any mistakes and what to do to fix them. The process fo learning online has many aspects, but I can confirm that those skaters who go through this pages and do the work, put in the time practicing on skates, they get results and their skating improves faster than if they hadn't taken the course. Check outage testimonies on my website on each course page. Or maybe try out one of the courses for free using the free trials button and see if it's something you may want to invest in.
      The How to Skate series is where to start (beginner, intermediate or advanced level). Check online training at skatefresh.com

    I'm not sure if I'll be able to explain this well, but in Australia our kerb looks very different to that and.... I don't think that the same technique would work? They aren't square edged, they're concave like a quarter of a concrete pipe and about as wide as my blades are long. Some of them around my suburb even have a lip on the top edge of them to stop debris from being brushed off of the path into the gutter :/

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I don't understand well. You mean the kerb is made in a way it would actually stop you if you tried to go through it just by gliding over? So the edge doesn't let you go down but instead makes you go up? That sounds weird. Asha's been to Australia, but obviously not all cities are the same.

      @@SkatefreshVideos Oh I'm sorry I didn't see that anyone had replied to this.
      The top image in this Wikipedia page is almost the same as my area's kerb, but at the top of the one pictured it cuts down so that it's lower than the footpath - mine stick up to be a little bit higher than the footpath, then drop to the same kind of curved shape into the road.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kassel_kerb
      I assume my only/best way over these is to step up and down?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety

      @@sotnos1125 Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I can see it now, thanks! Well, in this case speed will be your best friend. If the protrusion is just slight you can glide over it in the scissors position and with certain speed gained beforehand. If it's prominent or with a straight profile then I'd say you should hop. It would be the same hop Asha explains in this video but instead of just going down you will go up first and then down. The more speed you have the more distance you will cover by hoping, but don't try to go super fast either. You don't need to jump high. If you never did it practice on grass, then on concrete until you get used to it. And remember to flex your knees before and after the hop, that is what gives you the height and the shock attenuation once you land. For an extended explanation about jumps check this czcams.com/video/YMC4ZQ42d_4/video.html
