Unless you’ve been tailing me the whole time, it’s like you have someone else keeping an eye on me.” His next shot was a bluff, since he’d already heard as much from Ryuzu. Garfiel’s pupils narrowed. “The third and final guess is what links the first and the second together. It’s the girl who looks just like Ryuzu that I saw in the forest. That girl-oof.”
He basically calls out on his bullshit, acting like he knows everything. He was Also testing to see how far it would take for Garfiel to get mad enough to kill him.
Which is why garf was confused, that Subaru was trying to push him so hard that he would kill him.

You missed that dialogue subtlety, but it wasn't directed towards Emilia that he would save her. It was towards Satella. I think you completely ignored that page of the LN XD

Hard to tell if it that's true, here in the LN is kinda vague, but in the WN is made extra clear that he was speaking about Emilia, so I guess it's fair to say that's the same in the LN.
