- This 1993 Toyota MR2 features a CA smog-legal supercharged Toyota V6 engine swap, smaller supercharger pulley, larger injectors, and mass-airflow meter. It also has coil-overs, straight pipes, and a grin-demanding whine from behind you when you put your foot down.

This driver has the exact right mentality; it's not all about HP numbers and 0-60 times.. but rather about how the car makes you feel. Love the build.
DeployableMango considering the wieght 300 hp should give it a repectable actual # along with the feel. Personally I think 5 or 10 to 60 is a more important # in regards to how a car feels ( if it hooks good) if your not looking for drag racing and the launch needed to be effective. The car isn't riced out , the wheels are understated but awesome and look perfect on this body, the body style is amazing and timeless and at 10k, its fucking awesome and presumably it is reliable and relatively fuel efficient. I call it a 10 on the win scale in style plus bang for the buck.
But it IS about the HP numbers and times... Because if this car had 90hp and 16 second 0-60 times I doubt he would love the way it made him feel.
bliglum Right, 90HP in a Supercharged V6, genius.
Too true man. It's not always about numbers & speed. If it drives right and gives you a smile, thats good enough
My first thought too. Excact right mentality. Especially when its about a daily ride. Fantastic sound!
Love the SW20
You should let him review your AW11
Vagabond Falcon on One Take when?
I had a feeling
+carburetor55 - When it's cooling issues are fixed :P
Most dangerous car in the world eh? Idiot RC.
Those evo wheels look fresh on that car. Very nice build sir
I personally think they would look great on lots of cars, they've been in my top 3-5 "favorite wheels I've ever seen" ever since my mom got an Evo in 2004. It's a shame that Enkei doesn't seem to have made them except for the Mitsu OEM, in a perfect world you could get them in other sizes.
Probably the best choice of a wheel for the Evo, almost never understood why you'd swap them off an Evo for something else (besides size reasons, of course)... I agree, this build's really cool (or shall I say "wheelie-cool"?)!
Poor man's Evora. God the mr2 was an amazing platform. Need a 4th generation!
Boosted Toyota MR2 = Lotus Evora 400
Boosted Toyota 86 = Porsche Cayman
Boosted Toyota Supra = Ferrari 488
JP idk about those past two. Mid engines are something special. And the 488 is totally different than a Supra
You may be in luck, I think I heard something about a new MR2
Idk about the evora too. One thing is it is a budget build, but Evora 400 has 100 HP more plus it is so light and sorta has a back seat.
@MyName IsOllie You likely heard a rumor, or just somebody fanboying out.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota were to announce a new one. We know they're working on a new Supra, and they applied for a renewal on the trademarks for Celica with the US Patent and Trademark Office about a month ago. Some people have speculated that they'll just apply it to our version of the next generation 86, but with Scion and the tC gone, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new FWD sportster in the future (especially with Honda bringing over the Civic Type R). The upshot is, a new MR2 is far from impossible at this point. I could even see them doing some platform sharing with Lotus (whom they have a working relationship with) to expedite the process.
lmao He got a Camry motor to sound like a damn Lamborghini Countach
a lambo? really?
Yes, it actually does sound like a Countach lol
I'm sorry, have you ever heard a Countach?
It does genuinely sound like an old V12, which isn't surprising for a loud V6
don't be sorry for being a douche
Im a big fan of the Evora and a big fan of this guy's smog-legal build for UNDER $10K! What?!?!?!?
This is NOT helping my MR2 desires... Fuck this thing sounds awesome.
trust me
More MR2 sounds to not help: czcams.com/video/wimVvjEkyCQ/video.html
Not mine. Lol
It's a sick car bro.
Troggie42 czcams.com/video/Meat-VaF038/video.html v6's all sound weird
I love that no matter what, Matt always shares his professional, genuine opinion on what he thinks can be tweaked to make your car just that much better. So thank you Matt for not being afraid to tell the owners straight up what you think can be improved! Awesome ride!
MR2 is always the answer.
It doesn't work like that! ;)
I'm always more impressed when someone goes through the California BAR hoops to legally swap motors. Respect.
Dat SC whine... This is gotta be one of my favorite MR2 builds, yet. I love the idea of a fully-stock 3.0 plus TRD SC kit. Just the right amount of fun, while still appeasing the smog gods.
I tried doing a build like this so many years ago, came to realize I didn't have time or money. But it's awesome seeing this being driven. Not too many MR2s are going this route anymore. Everyone wants to do a Kswap in them now a days
Great car! The MR2 always has been one of my favorite cars from the 90's in this case. Nice job done with the car. Matt, as usual great video! Keep going that way
Makes you think there might be more stuff hidden in the Toyota Racing catalog. Seems like an entertaining car.
Not really. All the hidden stuff is just roots superchargers on random V6s in different platforms.
thanks for review this and the other ones Matt. I've been thinking of buying one and swapping as a project and your questions to the owners really help
tst is best when you give feedback on how to make the car better. Really awesome to hear your perspective given how many different builds you've had seat time in.
Holy crap I've thought about this swap before, it's good to see it in action
Well done! I really love the fact that this is a daily driver and that some care was taken to make this car fully street legal with respect to emissions. I live in Cali, and that task is easier said than done!
This V6 swap is really good, honestly. Great choice!
Matt says, "awful lot like an Evora S engine" and judging from the comments people hear, "It has an Evora S engine". Please, people.
Spot on. As he says it makes him smile. The that beats making it stupid hp, and not being able to use it. Also nice standard looks.
This is the kind of car that I love.
Unique, beautiful, and that sound is just incredible.
WAAAAAAAY better than I would've expected an MR2 to sound ahaha.
It sounds like a spaceship with wheels!
Love it.
In Australian, we had the TRD Aurion (Camry) using the 3.5, and it was supercharged from the factory.
241 (Engine) Kilowatts all through the front wheels. Models were around 2008
I never used to like these but now finding lots of wantage for one!
Great looking and sounding car!
Really surprised the owner agreed with Matt that the engine is related to the 3.5 evora when this mr2 has the 3.0 older Camry v6. 3vz or 1mz 3.0 is being used here.
1compaqedr8 It's a 1MZ, the evora is a 2GR.
No, he said "like" a budget Evora. Doesn't mean it literally is.
2gr Fe is found in the camry and the sienna. Allegedly the motor bolts directly to the trans and makes excellent power. The 2grfse makes even more power and bolts right up and thats found in the Lexus gs/is350 and rx350
not allegedly, it bolts up no problems. Look at Frankenstein motorworks channel for instructions. The FSE ECU is unable to be hacked to disable the immobiliser.
Great project V6 Camry in a MR2. Driver's comments are right about the tuning, as it could be optimised. Nice budget too. For $10,000 its good value for money. Friend had one of these but the V6 was built with good rods, pistons, cams, ARP stuff, turbo and standalone ECU. Made an easy 900 HP he said and lots of torque. These V6 have lots of potential, and they are the best swap for the RWD conversions too. The 3SGTE turbo engine of this car is very potent too. Enjoyed this video.
I really like this, not overly modified, love the balance, great platform! 👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing video and an amazing owner. Can't believe he did everything himself and on such a tight budget. Brilliant!
I bought a 91 5sfe 5Speed a month ago, lovin it considering the reliability of these motors despite their lack of power, the handling is amazing
Seems like a nice daily driver...it sounds great!
This is the 1mz-fe 3.0 motor from the 90s-early 2000s Camry it made 188hp I think the supercharged ones made 220-240whp. The Elvora S I believe had the 3.5 2gr motor with 275hp roughly before the “S” supercharger model.
He's so dead set on making it smog-legal, but the car should fail a safety inspection due to no amber front side markers, no red rear side markers (looks like JDM tail lights that aren't DOT approved), and an aftermarket steering wheel removing the driver's air bag. California is stupid.
There is no light/reflector inspections in california. Only if a police officer notices and gives a shit about it. I just make sure that all my lights work . old post, but still
@@gildardo true, but same with SMOG after you get the car approved once. Especially since he does the work himself and said he's comfortable with wiring, swapping an ECU with a flashed tune isn't unfeasible. If he gets pulled over and the cop is a dick, he'll have to fix everything else and swapping an ecu at that point makes sense. If the whole car isn't CA legal then he may as well make his daily more fun.
Great build! MR2's have so much potential 😎
FYI: I've owned x 2 NA MR2's that didn't have power steering from the factory. Pretty rare, but they're out there. And GREAT CAR, BTW!!! I'm on my 6th MR2 and I'm such a fan. Currently rocking a beautiful stock '94 Turbo. Cheers from Cleveland~
matts honest constructive criticism is a high compliment. he doesn't comment like this on junkers. he's trying to help this guy make his car even better, and that advice given free is valuable!
Such an under-rated platform. Love these cars.
It's so crazy to see what the wildfire did to this area...
Awesome car though!
Bushfire - best thing to happen to the bush!
man, the 2GR doesn't get enough respect, when dressed up correctly it runs well and sounds great
I have had a gen 1 S/C and a gen 2 na and loved them both. Great car. I bought a solara new with a manual and S/C off my dealers floor. He always had the cool stuff
Dammit, it's like you have a direct link to my mind!
Sweet build, but I'm still in love with that Caldina swap.
its so funny how the V6 camry engine is actually an awesome engine.
I'd take Matt's input and opinion on a car over any other car journalist
cmon what about chris harris or james may both are geniuses in that aspect.
james is known as captain slow, but really he is an incredible driver and very VERY good at driving fast.
Ayyye there we go... back to the good stuff... love this car
Been a while since I've checked in on Smoking Tire videos.. what a awesome vehicle to get me back into it :)
He can still tune it with the stock ECU, just needs a split second wideband controller.
Love 2nd gen MR2's. This is a very clean sweet example with a nice swap. Id love to drive it.
That build seems like it's very well put together, and it looks and sounds great. This guy really knows what he's doing. So much envy.
Also, Matt is too soft.
Gosh the mr2's stance is so good..
The steering is electro-hydraulic (instead of an engine driven power steering pump, it's driven by an electric motor), it's not like modern electric steering.
No wonder why everybody wants them. Get hydro feel but runs it off the charging system.
props for trying to set him up with a potential dyno/ dyno tune.
Love these cars. Used to have one, wish I never sold it - time to start crawling through craigslist. ;/
This is a great build! I love it.
man i miss T tops...
Wow one take upload on friday, what a nice surprise!
Im sure someone already mentioned this but. Its an electric hydo pump for the steering rack. So still an hydraulic power steering.
They also didn't "all" come with it either. Plenty of models came with manual steering.
josh gaither like every single Canadian mr2
Mine has a manual rack
Sounded great on the drive off.
Is that a Sola Luna shift knob? Had one on my S14 240sx, loved it. Great video Matt, appreciate you throwing in some feedback.
The Evo wheels look pretty good on it.
So refreshing to see a car without tv screens in the interior. Sweet ride too.
The panel gap on the driver side of the hood would drive me nuts because the rest of the car is so perfect.
Interesting, but cmon how did u not Dyno and tune this ? That's a mandatory must.
CARB.
JP Cali sucks for us .. word
He said why in the video
watch the video because he answers this question
You can't remap the factory ecu on v6 Toyotas, I tried to tune my Aurion/ camry v6 and I didn't happen
So cool!! Sounds like a fantastic project
Regarding the stand-alone in Cali... For '93 the only thing that needs to happen during SMOG as far as the computer is concerned is that the check engine light must come on at start-up then shut-off once started. No scan, no plug, no nothing, for '93 it's all sniffer based.
I feel like there's gotta be a way to show that CEL on start-up with a standalone - I'm sure it depends on the company, but the requirements aren't hard. It's not like '96+ where you have to worry about a whole OBD-II protocol and what-not. Just a check engine light flash!
Watch this in Guyana South America. I'm the proud owner of a sw20 MR2 Limited JFK spec...great video!!
Out here in pittsburgh there is a shop doing 2JZ swaps in the mr2s.
Matt you need to do a K swapped MR2, those are crazy
BoostedBoiz Kyle already has one, Making around 500whp.
You must be new here
czcams.com/video/0a76haKChfg/video.html
lol that's a k swapped miata?
SuspiciousBento That's a Miata, lol. Look at some 800hp+ MR2's on 1320video.
That's just the JDM version of a LS swap
Matt, I would also like to suggest a lighter crank pulley (they were being made by NST performance at one point), water meth injection, and a 255lb fuel pump (or higher depending on the injector size), with those mods I've seen that V6 put down about 350-400 HP when properly tuned- However the bottom end can't handle that amount of boost (7-8 psi) for too long. Also since it's a 1MZFE, he could swap the bottom end with a 3MZFE out of a Lexus RX330, which is more stout in stock form. and an overbored Throttlebody, No need to change the ECU in his case....
That’s the complete opposite of what he wants with this car…
I love this uncommon swaps!
Very nicely done setup
Very nice clean build. I dig it.
It def. looks like it would benefit from being setup with a softer suspension, but other than that: Love MR2s. Love this car :)
JohnnyNr5 I have BC Racing Coilovers in my Mk1 MR2 and they are not forgiving at all, but the feeling you get from them is worth it.
Agreed. BC Coils are cheap, I could never get mine just right on my wrx. Personally I'd just pick a different coilover and bite the bullet with corner balancing.
07wrxtr1 I paid $1000 for my Mk1 coilovers. BC Racing are the only decent ones available for the AW11.
Mine were good, a lot better than the megan racing ones I had on another car, but, I just couldn't get the results I wanted. Then again, it was an 07 wrx, which just wouldn't handle the way I wanted it to no matter what!! I'm sold on the idea of Ohlins/KW3's/Teins with edfc if I were to modify the 370z's suspension.
Matt seemed to be in a good mood today. Actually interested in the person's car as opposed to I see u for 10 minutes and that's it
Loved the look on Matts face after he tells the guy he should put it on a dyno.
Man this thing Sounds Great, Nice!!
Not a boat
Bud 215
Thank god
well somone didnt notice the inboard propeller....so that would mean yes. it is a boat by definition. dont ever talk shit about my boat again,
i love the mr2 reviews :D
Dat E30 in the back though can't wait for that one
I`m in the MR2 community and although I own a first gen this is the first time I hear that the second gen had Electronic assisted Steering... from Factory..
Marcos Gustavino cause it's not haha. The guest was incorrect. It's electric-hydraulic and not all of them had it, lots of mr2 also had manual steering.
Yeah, that was my nice way of saying the statement was incorrect, I`m sure Farah also doubted from that but he played along hehe
Awesome exhaust note, excellent car!
I would love to see you drive a car with a LS-V12. If you ever get the chance, please record it for us. Thank you Matt. :)
I’ve got an ‘89 Supercharged MR2 with the same shake under braking that Matt spoke of. He spoke of brake pad deposits on the discs(because I’m sure they’re not warped). My question is how can I get the deposits of the discs?
I am really surprised that he got that thing through the smog ref. I did a ton of research into doing a V8 swap in one of my trucks (1UZ into a toyota pickup) and even though the rules are more relaxed for trucks, it is still a heck of an undertaking. The rules (that are very vague) prohibit modifying the factory exhaust up to the outlet side of the cat at all, you also have to use the stock intake tract and airbox. And then there is the transmission regs. Some refs will green light trans swaps and auto to manual conversions, others demand that the factory trans from the donor car be utilized. In the end I decided I will be doing a pre 75 truck (smog exempt).
It’s called move Cali sucks! Lol beautiful state terrible leadership.
"Electric" power steering isn't entirely accurate to describe the car. It uses an electronic motor driven hydrolic pump. So it's still a hydrolic system.
"...and the widest rubbers possible"
"Does she rub?"
"Yeah when she's in the mood!"
Love how everyone in your videos look so nervous in the passenger seat.
Nice car and build, MR2 getting love over in the U.S.
Awesome engine sound!
Me and my brother had an rebuilt 4age in a 1986 mr2 t top it was a fun car thought about going to the 4zge supercharged motor and doing a head build and pulley upgrade never got alot to it though
Love the color. Nice creamy white. Very cool car good performance!
Matt says he should go to a specialist in set up and....dudidudiididi....he always has the best advice.
Is that an e30 m3 in the background? When does that one take come out?
I still am in lust for these cars!
I've got a 2000 Subaru 2.5rs coupe...should i get a jdm ej207 sti motor? Or Subaru svx eg33 flat 6 engine and if so, shoukd i build a high comp n/a, or turbo it?
Just saw this thing on Craigslist and I am gonna call him up in the morning lmao
Very nice ride. Love it!
How can you add a SC on a locked up ECU? I want to add a SC on my RSX but I know I have to have K-Pro cause my factory ECU is locked down. Why does it work on your car but not on mine?
Daang..this thing sounds lik an air cooled porsche 👍👍, awesome
Does anybody know the name of those wheels? I'm looking to buy a set for my mr2. They bump the look of the car up, while staying subtle.
The first time I saw an MR2 was when I was a kid in the early 90s, in the back of a super Nintendo box at a sears counter. Apparently in the picture it was rallying coming off a road jump and the wheels airborne. It was white too
Awesome set-up.. great build as a daily..
