This second-generation MR2 Turbo is a home brew project by owner Michael, who, in all honesty, just nailed it from every angle. It features a JDM 2.0T engine swap from a later Toyota Caldina, a properly dialed in suspension, and the end result is one of the more spectacular driving vehicles of any age or price point I've driven, really, ever.

And yet the fools of the internet won't like it because it doesn't make 700 hp. This is a damn near perfect canyon car.
320 HP is practically unusable in a 2750 lb car in most cases, unless you're on a track. That's insane power to weight ratio. Although my Tercel only weighs 1900 lbs stock, so I'm a little confused how the MR2 can weigh so much more? Of course it's literally twice the car, with better handling and way more potential, so I'm sure that extra weight is due to it being a better car.
@@Ritalie it will be the extra reinforcement etc, 900kgs is very light for a car you should turbo it 😉
But it WILL make 700hp on the mr2 Turbo motor Or even more on a K-swapped honda motor.
asambi69 the MR2 will make 750+ with a 5SFE Bottom end mated to a 3SGTE head with forged internals, big turbo, fuel, bolt ons etc etc, however you can make almost the same with the k20, with a stock block they can handle up to 650+ which is pretty insane. They can sit pretty even at power level which is so dope
Most guys have never driven a high hp car and don't realize how bad too much hp can make a car that isn't designed for the power.
Guy really knows his car and Matt loved it.One of the best one takes yet :)
Michael S what about the s54 e30??
Michael S Evora?
Except the fact that the car is quite as hell.
Good old Mr.2
Its like a 1991 cayman 718.
Michael, but what about that VFR800 swapped Honda N600?
This owner knows his shit. Makes the video a lot more interesting to watch when the owner has soooo much things to talk about the car. Like, fuck the stickies in the MR2 forums, just watch this. THIS is the MR2 guide. lol
one of the prettiest japanese cars of the nineties (when done properly like this one)
fritzie p why qualify the statement with Japanese. It's one of the best looking cars period
fritzie p they are! I've owned 7 of them🤗
Ross Gerami my dad used to have a mk1 which is also quite nice
fritzie p yes but not in the looks department lol
Mini NSX, and in a way its better.
I always wanted an MR2 turbo when I was young. This serves as a bitter sweet reminder of the company Toyota used to be.
The GT86 is pretty cool, and the S-FR looks interesting. And they have a Supra coming out pretty soon...
Zanpa, they've been saying that about the Supra for years. I wonder if they'll even make it.
They already made it. The new Supra was on display at the Stockholm Auto Show this year, along with news that they will begin production on that car this year for its worldwide release in 2019. Which I'm excited as fuck for, and really nervous.
But besides that, Toyota never really stopped making top-notch sport/driver cars. They just switched them over to Scion and Lexus for a while. The MR2 was around forever BECAUSE it was cool as hell and cheap, the SC300 and SC400 are still spankin' Beemers, the Celica was a fuckin steal for decades, the GT-86 is a sick platform, the Altezza(IS) series is great, the ISF and RSF are fantastic cars, the LC is gorgeous and absolutely incredible to drive, and the LFA is one of the most badass super cars of all time. Especially the Roadster. Hell, the entire F-Sport lineup is pretty fuckin great, and u can even make a TC fast and nimble with minimum effort. Toyota never stopped making performance-minded vehicles. They just put them where they made sense. A $35k TT Toyota, IN THE 90'S(*cough Supra cough*), did not make sense. I remember when the '97 Supra came out. I saw the price tag and thought the dealer was on coke.lol
For the people that don't understand inflation, $35k for a Toyota in the 90's is like $70k+ for a Toyota today. And not a fully built Land Cruiser. Just a normal ass tuner with basic options.haha
you can still buy one just might take awhile to find the right one. Dont give up
Well they're remembering those days clearly.. The all new Corolla has a multi-link rear suspension setup and the torsion beam is finally fucking gone hopefully never to return again. This means toyota lovers now finally have an accessible canvas from which to personalize and build upon.
"Dude, this is cool!"
That's what we all want to hear if Matt were to drive our car. Kudos to the owner and that's one sweet MR2.
MR2 Turbo... one of the most underrated cars of the 90s. They are so bad ass!
Nothing better than "built not bought" builds. Respect.
because the parts were free
and so was the donor.
This is my favorite MR2 video. The owner knows the car inside and out and I love the mixing and matching of parts from other cars. This is one of the most optimal cars i’ve ever seen.
This is what TST is all about
Props to the prius driver!
Voice of Reason he hopped over like he was avoiding a bomb lol
Scared AF😂
Everyone knows when the shades go down it's go time for Matt 😎
funkingitup sunglasses shades ! Get your head out of the toilet big fella
A friend of mine used to have a 1993 stock MR2 Turbo. Then in 1999, he sold it and bought that first gen Boxster. Back then I told him that he was making a big mistake. I still do!
One of Matt's reviews that I watched from end to end.
It is great when the owner builds the car entirely himself from the ground up and knows everything about it! Huge props to him!
Great sound on entry launch.
These are my favorite One Takes. Owner loves his car, Matt loves the car, and owner is overjoyed for Matt to be driving his car. Good job man.
still really want one of these. Aged extremely well.
Finally - a hot rodder who didn't make the brakes an AFTERTHOUGHT. My favorite humor moment in his videos (aka how to tell he's dealing with an amateur) - someone who rattles on for six minutes about the engine, but when Matt asks about brakes, cue the blank look on the guy's face. Priceless.
Great job on the MR2!
As a Rev 3 mr2 Turbo owner myself ( UK ) I can also agree that Porterfield R4S pads with decent discs and serviced 93+ callipers make an awesome brake setup, I also threw in braided lines and the same Motul fluid he's using. This guys done a real nice job on his build. Great cars, Ive driven a few other tuner style cars and nothing gives the feedback and that the MR2 sw20
seems to give. Will probably never sell mine. that and I've put well over 25k into it lol.
Pity that the US never got the Caldina... a 260 HP AWD wagon in 1997(!)
Polychromophilia outback?? 😔
Jason Smith What US-spec Subaru wagon made nearly that much power, let alone in 1997? AFAIK, the WRX wagon (which didn't arrive until 2002) was the most powerful wagon of that era Subaru ever exported to the US, and that topped out at ~230 HP.
I'm pretty sure everywhere else but the US go the Subaru Legacy (Liberty here in Australia) with the twin turbo 2.0 which was 99 - 03 as the B4 sedan and GT-B wagon. I have an 02 Liberty Outback with a full GT-B running gear and suspension conversion that makes 310hp at the crank on 98 unleaded with nothing more than a little tune.
The US didn't get the TT engine because the second turbo sits right where your steering would come through, so the popular mod is WRX swap the standard Impreza wagon.
Polychromophilia It's not 1997. It's 2001. 1997 came with the 4afe. Get your facts right!
Polychromophilia didnt know this, will look into it. In terms of the Outback I was referring to all-wheel drive and manual capabilities.
I remember driving a 1993 MR2 Turbo brand new back in the day. I still think that this was the first exotic car I ever drove. With 320-350hp on the motor this must be amazing!
One of the best MR2's out there.
I was looking for one a few years back and had a hard time finding a good one.
Loved this so much, watched it twice
Way to go Mike! It's always nice seeing/hearing your car at work, glad to see others enjoy it as well! You've done a hell of a job on your MR2.
@9:24 Power is the last thing in the equation. Mike you are my hero. OMG. again balance is the proper way to mod.
I need to say I have been using search tempest/auto tempest for years and it works great! This isn't just an add, it is something Matt really likes.
These platform size cars with 300 to 350-ish HP is where its at. Good suspension and its a fun beast.
The owner makes the vid in some cases - this is one of them. Matt asks anything about the car and he knows exactly what it has/is because he's the one who got his hands dirty and did it.
The phrase "car guy" is thrown around a lot but this guy is the reality of it.
My first comment for TST. Matt. I think you do just such a great job!! Really appreciate your energy and ability to connect with me a viewer and the dudes you have on. I share your stuff all the time for the comments I have just made. Never any BS. Just fun loving real raw driving! Peace
I like this. To many people just don't know when to stop on power. They do a bit of handling mods and keep adding power/boost until it blows up or goes so fast they wreck.
Well done.
This review was fantastic. Glad to see the dynamic between these two genuine car guys.
Mad respect, one of the nicest Mr2's I've seen/heard of. This guy knows his stuff.
I was smiling throughout the whole video. Great build. Those 2 and a half years paid off. And it must be nice getting this type of feedback from Matt!
Great video, and outstanding car! I'm always happy to see another Gen4 3S-GTE swapped MR2 getting some love. These cars have gotten much more popular since I bought mine 5 years ago, and I only see them becoming more sought-after as time goes on.
Super clean swap. Sounds great, too! Thanks guys
Had a black 91 NA turbo swapped as well with a JDM engine, but kept it stock. Absolutely loved it and how raw it felt compared to cars nowadays. The car on this video looks and seems to be the perfect setup for an MR2 turbo! Kudos to the owner.
Wow. He built it himself as well and it seems so tight. Awesome car, MR2's RULE
so happy you done an mr2 turbo. i have a rev1 n\a now and am saving for a newer turbo. amazing job to the own for building it himself as well! thumbs up.
bug hits windshield 7:04
u mother pancit! Rip
u mother pancit!
damm you caught it 20 mins before me...I need to wake up earlier...
The dislikes were by the hit bugs lol
1 liek = i prayer
Where?
I almost never watch these to the end. Incredible One Take and car, this guy has so much passion. Thoroughly enjoyed this!
GUYS DID YOU SEE THE BUG HIT THE WINDSHIELD AT 7:04 I'M THE ONLY PERSON WHO NOTICED IT DUE TO MY VIGILANT VIEWING OF THESE CZcams VIDEOS. I WILL POINT OUT ALL FLAWS TO EVERYONE TO ASSERT MY SUPERIORITY IN OBSERVATION AND GIVE MYSELF AN EGO BOOST SINCE I CAN'T BOOST MYSELF OUT OF THIS CHAIR.
lol
LMAO
Random racist comment because my sexuality doesn't agree with your comment.
Eratiik Well, I sexually agree with your race. So...
Inaccurate and rather childish insult because I have no comeback comment.
Never clicked that fast at a video. Wonder car
Hey man, watching this makes me miss my MR2s that I owned back in the days especially the last one which was a 1996 MR2 Tubro GTS RHD imported from Japan with Gen3 3S-GTE engine making approx. 300 HP to the crank. I had some basic boltons as well and a geniune TOM's bodykit in white. It made the same sounds as yours even with a Blitz Blow Off. I think 3S-GTEs are the best sounding 2l 4 Zylinder motors ever. Keep enjoying it! You will never forget this car in your life trust me! Greetings from a used to be fellow MR2 owner.
Ah :) This gives me a good feeling. Never knew Matt could be so enamored with an Mr2.
My Mr2's sitting in the garage, awaiting a ton of work to make it ready for this year's Bear Mountain rally.
After viewing this video, I'm inspired to refine it further and tighten it up.
Bravo, good sir. You've represented the community in an outstanding manner.
YAAAYY, an actual full length One Take. Been missing the 10+ minute videos, 7/8 minutes isn't enough to really get my fix
Brilliant.
MR2s are so awesome both stock and as a platform.
I miss mine so much.
Luv and Peace.
What a great build, owner has done a ripper job, what a boss. This is what one-takes should be about!
That car sounds and looks great! Nice build, and a great review!
He sorted that thing perfectly! Great job
Nice! It must be MR2 season. I just got my bigger turbo in the mail finally for my '91 MR2, and I was just thinking "I wonder if Matt would appreciate a nice MR2 Turbo build when I get this done" and then this video is what I find.
Wow, first onetake I've watched all the way through in a while, props to a DIY garage swap/build
I loved this one take. The owner is smart and made all the right choices, including license plate!
And the car is just AWESOME. Those 90s japanese sports cars are so good.
Always loved the look of the MR2 thought that was so much better than the Del Sol.
vwgolfer187 the del sol was basicly a heavier civic with less space. dont get me wrong i Love Civics from the 90's. they are just One of the best fwd car of thier time if not the best but an mr2 is a different story.
One of the best one takes yet
YES, one of my new favorite car vids from TST. I can tell Matt loves those well balanced cars like that one vid of the old skool civic awhile back I know because I enjoy my lightened and balanced S2k. It's a good feeling
This is a great one take!! MR2 enthusiast will love this!! The guy that built it is legit
Fantastic one-take, cool guy, amazing MR2. Great video
Epic take. Props to the builder. And if he's listening, on my '93 turbo I have stock sways and KW coils (with the roll correction and front camber/caster plates). You can set it quite comfy for the street but it's still great for track work.
Always wanted one of these back in the day. Nice build!
Great build, awesome driver interaction!
Auto tempest has helped me find every good condition mr2 /mr2 Spyder within my range and now I’m going to be buying the right one
You built my dream car :) So glad it it made the show.
one of the best looking engine swaps ive seen in a long time
Just adding to the many comments about how Awesome this builder is and how well he presented his ride.
one of my favorite cars i have seen on the one takes
I'm bummed this doesn't have the rare clutchless manual option- those are the shit
wasn't that only for the 3rd gen MR2?
hes jking
csl lol this is becoming a reoccuring joke
To the top with you!
w
Love to see a great home build. Super clean.
Always loved this MR2. Test drove one when new and it was a fun ride.
Nice little car! Good job!
I really enjoyed how much the dude enjoyed his own car, every car guy wishes to achieve that sort of happiness with their ride, its always awesome to see!
One of my fav cars. I really love this one. Great job on the car btw. Awesome one take. I really enjoyed the gear head conversation. easy thumbs up imo
So much YES in this video!
This is one the best One Takes ever.
Holy smokes. That's a nice build!
this is a really awesome drive; one of the best for sure
Very nice build!
"That's suuuper super interesting"
When you explain to her how VTEC works...
slashbashin Honda people don't talk to girls
@@norgepalm7315 Racing pilots don't need girlfriends.
I know I'm repeating, but this guy really knows how to build a car. Great job!
car passion.. reignited! thanks fellerz!
Well done Mike!
Best video I've seen in a while.
love the car, the owner and the review. well done !
Awesome and clean car! Love this episode. True car people doing it right.
More mr2's !! they are so much fun .. gt28rs setups to gt3082r pulls .. hearing the intake / turbo noises behind your head.. ahhhh music to my ears ..
Probably my favorite one yet, very good
Matt loved this car, sounded like a kid on Christmas :) glad he found a 2 that made him so happy!
Mad respect to this guy. The best way to Properly modify a car.
Matt really likes the car and that always make a great vid (even though its rare he has this much enthusiasm for a car)
This channel needs more of this.
I've always loved these. This guy is proud of his car and he should be
This is very cool! I need to do this one day.
Wow someone made something simple, and tasteful. Nice car.
a very well clean build. you never can go wrong with a toyota mr2 :)
THIS IS THE BEST ONE-TAKE TO DATE
you can see by the stunned look on Matts face he is in heaven with this car. To me this is everything a proper sports car should be, it's perfect, the owner is a legend!
Serious props! Mad respect to being built in his garage by himself!
Great car, great owner, communicates efficiently, doesn't blab on about nonsense, knows his stuff, turns his own wrenches. 10/10, would two-take.
great one take. looks like Matt really enjoyed it
The suspension works wonders. Stock MR2 Turbos are twitchy at the limit. Let off the throttle mid-corner and it gets squirrely, this one tucks right in. Great build.
even after 4 years, this has aged like fine wine. it makes me miss my steel/silver mist grey turbo i had right out of high school. not many of my friends knew much about it, and always clowned that it was such an old car at the time. that was until i told them to give it a go behind the wheel, and then they would understand why it was so special! for me, it was just a peppy sprinter with go-kart like handling with an hks ssqv that would always put a stupid fat grin on my face lol. the one thing i remember tho was that it did have the drawback of feeling very light on the front wheels, especially after about 120 mph. i think that can be minimized with front aero parts, but unfortunately i was t-boned and brought an end to my ownership. a big plus was that it was a 2-seater, which meant when it came for who was to drive that night when we all got together to go out on the weekends, i would never be part of that equation or argument LOL
