  • With the premiere of the fifth SCREAM feature film just around the corner, now is the perfect time to look under the hood of the original 1996 classic -- which teamed screenwriter Kevin Williamson and legendary horror director Wes Craven for one of the highest-grossing, most beloved slasher franchises of all time. Not only did SCREAM usher in a new wave of slasher cinema in the late '90s, it also played a major role in the trend of postmodern "self-aware" horror that continues more than a quarter-century later.

The film was a box office success making $173 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget. The opening scene was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. When audiences saw the opening they thought Drew Barrymore was going to be the hero, but they were in for a shocking surprise.

I'll always remember the first time I saw Scream in the theater back in the 90s. It was such an amazing experience. The movie really was on another level for it's time. It had such a perfect blend of just about everything you could want from a slasher movie. Marco Beltrami's score is so wonderfully epic. Especially during Casey's death scene at the beginning of the movie. It helped to set a very unique ominous tone right from the start that carries throughout the movie and really helps balance the scares and laughs unlike other horror movie scores of the time. Overall Scream is a classic and one of Cravens best efforts. RIP, Wes.

So glad to see someone mention the score of this movie....I agree dude..the score was brilliant...it takes so much to be able to balance such a unique tone for the genre...the first and second were so masterfully done 👌

Scream works so well to this day because Kevin Williamson managed to write a film that was scary, gory, AND had memorable characters that we love and care about. Even the principal played by Henry Winkler makes a mark. I think the franchises success is due to the characters of Sidney, Gale, and Dewey being so strong, but Casey, Tatum, Stu, and Billy are all unforgettable as well. Just epic filmmaking all around from the whole team, and especially Wes.

The opening sequence with Drew Barrymore is iconic because it is a combination of a great stablished actress with a perfect script and dynamic filmmaking techniques making us feel her misery and dispair as if we were there with her in the house knowing that a psychopath is lurking outside.

Scream is defiantly an incredible film. One of the best films ever made. Helped bring life back into the horror genre when it was practically dead. Of course because of its success, the film had a lot of imitators, which seems to happen with any successful film. Great video!

I saw SCREAM when I was 13 in 2005. I actually saw the series out of order, seeing SCREAM 2 first. I was very smug and overconfident that the first movie wouldn’t scare me since I “knew the formula”. But my stomach seriously dropped when Drew’s character Casey runs through her house, locking the doors as the camera follows behind. That music, the cinematography…it was perfect.

Scream and Scream 2 were popular in my high school junior and senior years. Several teens wore the Ghostface masks at football games.

  • @Henners
    @Henners Před 2 lety +5

A few errors about the mask. It wasn’t found in a costume shop, it was a house they were scouting for locations to shoot in. They reached out to funworld but made the KNB mask in case funworld said no. It got to crunch time and they started filming with the KNB mask. The first day of shooting is also when funworld responded with the cost to use the mask (the license fee is reported to have been only 10K). Funworld didn’t call it Ghostface during production - they continued using the fantastic faces line because no one knew Scream would be a success. They renamed it the scream stalker in 1998 and didn’t use the Ghostface name until about 2001.

The story about finding the mask while location scouting was in a documentary about the series (I think Still Screaming?)
I don't remember if all the info about the name is stated in the same documentary or not. But I do think there's a video on YT of a collector going over all the masks used, and some of the naming info might've been in that...

I really don’t get when people say Scream 2 is just as good if not better then the original. All the characters including the killers were all so well written and entertaining the whole way through in Scream. Mickey is fun when he’s revealed as the killer in 2 but before that he’s pretty bland and I just hated the stage setting for a showdown. I know it was them being meta but it really was a dull location.

Scream was a big reference to black christmas, when a stranger calls with a twist of HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME.
Scream II basically randy referencing all the horrible college based slashers but also the good ones like The Dorm That Dripped Blood, graduation Day, etc. While those were good scream 2 reigns supreme along with Urban Legend for college slashers.
Scream 3 goes hollywood. To me that had a bit of originality especially miltons character.
Scream 4 back to woodsboro high. The scrram series took a lot of those classics and did it right im hyped for scream 5

My favourite piece of trivia was that Wes Craven lied to the MPAA to get the shot where Ghostface catches and stabs Casey. He told them that there was no alternate shot because Drew Barrymore was too emotional to film alternate coverage so there would be no way to explain why she went from running to lying on the ground with a stab wound. This was not true, but he just wanted the shot.

I love the fact that the movie that best parodies the slasher movie genre, while clearly being inspired the most by this movie, took the original title for this movie, Scary Movie... Of course the fact that Scream is itself a parody of the genre, while being of it, is another matter altogether.
Edit: Note that I'm referencing the first Scary Movie, not any of the awful sequels... Although it is VERY horror of them to have a great first movie followed by a bunch of bullshit sequels lol

Yeah that Barrymore is super toxic, but she knows that she's a box office draw that's why she refuses so much work. But it's for the best because every roll she spurns, launches a movie career. Case in point Neve Campbell, Juliane Moore, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon and so forth. Barrymore's opening scene launches the movie like a bottle rocket. Everything Barrymore touches turns to gold and she knows that and Hollywood knows that. Wes Craven was selfish in putting himself in that insider joke cameo montage. We the audience didn't have to see that. If he didn't show us his dick it's only because he'd get fined so we were protected in that manner. Jamie Kennedy is so full himself yeah he's funny but not that funny. Skeet Ulrich was great, he did to that movie what Depp did to NM on Elm street. The only complaint I have is that if the movie is set in small town America, I understand that Americans grow up with guns and ammo and know guns like a teenager knows cell phones. The killers aren't met by resistance only until the very end so that's the only error in the movie. Americans really shoot at any threat they see so no one really knows guns or they're not there in the Scream universe as an obstacle.
