Hey everyone. Thanks for the comments. Once again I woke up to about 200 of them so it'll take some time to respond to everyone plus I'm practicing more riffs. haha. Anyhow I know I play Dyers Eve funny. When I was 15 I bought the AJFA tab book and it sucked but I didn't knot it at the time. The main riff for Blackened was literally written x 7 x 7 x 787 on one string. Anyhow I learned Dyers Eve from that same book and have failed to update it to the straight version. It's good to know that the real version is less difficult. ;)
Those tab books are filled with mistakes man
There was an issue of Guitar World years ago where Kirk Hammett goes over a bunch of Metallics licks and almost all of them were different from the tab books.
I was gonna say because you don’t pull off from the third fret
Fantastic dude love your videos and tutorials AND your love and reverence for the mighty Metallica. I wish Metallica would do a heavier than hell itself rendition of Sabbaths “Lord of this World” - one of the heaviest catchiest coolest riffs /song ever by the creator Mr Iommi. Better yet- have Iommi join Metallica for the version! My head and ears would explode!
aw man, i thought you were going to rank all 37 riffs from the song 'and justice for all.'
BeBopScraBoo Yeah that's confusing
Well he could do it with a dream theater song
Ikr lol there are so many riffs in that song though actually
Lmao
Seriously...
Growing conspiracy
Right arm is killing me
Frayed riffs of sanity
Hear them calling me
The Hardest Metallica album in my opinion!
It's not just your opinion, Metallica themselves rarely play anything on this album because it is too hard for them now
Calin Nita they can easily play, its just blrong to play livr cus os long songs, except for harvester and blackened and one, they flow pretty well
@@recipoldinasty No, Dyers Eve is probably their hardest song ever.
It's nerve racking
@TigMon They don't play and justice for all often because it's such a long song
People don't understand, how so much of Metallica is melodic and technical. I think it's amazing.
Thank you.
That's what I miss when looking for other technical thrash records in search of a similar sound, many albums like Contradictions Collapse can match AJFA for technicality, but they just don't have the melody and soul that this album has.
AJFA was the proggiest they ever got.
The song and justice for all deserves way more love
True. Dyers eve though.
its myfav song
@John Callenbach no such thing as too long
@@tcg1_qc james himself thinks its overdone. sooo.
i disagree tho haha i love it.
@@davidjaymz64 me too I think they could of shorten it but I still love it for it is
#1 riff is Blackened bridge. Yeah! I think this is one of the meanest riffs of Metallica.
The riff after is better, right before the solo.
You mean the frayed ends of sanity riff is 1#. I know it’s an opinion but the frayed ends of sanity is the best song on the album
The riff under Frayed Ends solo is very underrated, it's a crazy riff
Absolutely! Shame it's hidden under a solo.
that is an absolute genius masterpiece! It is incredible how it goes unoticed by so many, just like battery, dyers eve and so many others
It’s so good!
All "to live is to die" clean parts are GREAT! One of the most underrated metallica songs, I guess. Great content, by the way!
Whole album is equally great in my opinion
84-96 Metallica is great
Fun Fact: When James plays his solo on to live is to die you can actually hear bass! It's the only part of the album with audible bass
@@payblo2734actually you can hear the bass throughout the whole album if you have headphones with decent quality, but they basically removed all the bass out of the bass if you know what I mean and left the mids. So it’s like another guitar track which it makes it super hard to hear and he basically plays the same thing as James the whole time. You can clearly hear bass at the end of blackened as well
These videos have made me inspired to play more Metallica, would love to see more videos like this.
Metallica has been my only inspiration since 1992. Oh yea, also the year of my Divorce.
That tiny Marshall amp is cranking out some serious tone man! 🤘🤘🤘
Those of you that thought he's serious. Mike is using a kemper
I was just being funny! I know he wasn't using the little marshall amp!
kinda sounds like one tho ngl
Lmfao
The pre solo parts that Kirk writes are so good.
Kirk doesn't write pre solo parts
@@LowRiderFuckYou damage inc, kirk wrote that riff and is an Amazing riff, one of the heaviest of metallica
How do I like this twice
James Sappington make another CZcams account
You can spend some money on Pakistani like farms.
I like the grin at 7:44 that's the "I feel super cool playing this" face.
Maybe im a bit frisky, but this «series» is going to be your most watched videos 👍 Have a nice weekend man!
Frayed Ends of Sanity is THE ultimate riff song. It has so many excellent riffs w/ odd timing and pure balls. The "under the solo riff" is my favorite all-time riff and I'd never even noticed it till the Justice box set came out a few years ago. Really wish it'd had its own moment to shine.
My favourite riff is #37 rip
Same lol
Mine is 36 :(
I would have put the Blackend intro riff #1, one of the most chillful and memorable intros of all time! (I mean, the very first riff, even though it's on reverse xD)
@@gsav-o1539 I would consider it a riff, even though it's only played once. But you can recreate it, so there's that
That album has amazing riffs. I was always amazed how various Metallica riffs are. Especially the clean bits! They're genius with their clean melodies
That pre solo riff of frayed ends of sanity is prolly my favorite riff by Metallica
Same for me
My favorite is the "under solo riff" but pre is right w/ it. So underappreciated.
Outstanding album, and I believe Metallica most powerful one. The loss of Cliff leads the band to pour out their hearts and become much more vulnerable during justice. I love it, great job man!
Also to cancel all signs of there being a bass player on the album 😂
Congratulations on getting past the most difficult Metallica album, riffwise. I've been super into each of these videos, as a guitarist and a Metallica fan, and while you nailed the first three albums, I have to admit I wasn't sure how you were going to single out or play the epic riffs of ...and justice for all. The good news is now you get to relax your wrist for the next 4 albums. I hope you continue on with every Metallica album!
It was a long night. ;)
@@TheArtofGuitar nice job! BUT, there's no 2323232 in the main Dyers Eve riff, just straight 22222222 ;)
Best Metallica album I think
i’ll never get tired of to live is to die’s clean intro riff. some of the best stuff james ever wrote to be honest. i prefer it over the clean bridge riff :)
Actually I think that part was written by cliff!
@@connorross4336 I think it's the interlude riff that Cliff wrote.
@@maxlm07 James wrote the interlude
@@imagereflection4826 hi ali, good to see you here!
Eye of the Beholder is so underrated.
Lovely video! Inspires me to play more Metallica! \m/
The bridge in One after the final chorus and before the double bass part is the best riff on the whole album. The harmonies. Mean, powerful, so much grit yet so beautiful.
Bro the one that wasn’t on this list ? It’s so damn good . The one that sounds like you’re finna go to war listening to it ?😂
The best metallica album imo and one of the best of all time from start to finish, up there with rust in peace and operation mindcrime
I love your list. Mine would be a little different:
1) AJFA verse riff (E power chord into E and A open into E power chord then a rapid palm mute gives me the chills).
2) To Live Is To Die breakdown riff (clean).
3) Blackened main riff.
4) Blackened post-main riff.
5) Frayed Ends Of Sanity intro (the buildup is awesome).
6) ... I just realized how difficult it must have been for you to organize this list, I keep reordering things, so I'll stop here. Anyway, great job!
The Frayed Ends Of Sanity is one of my favorite, if not my all time favorite song of all time, and in my opinion the one of the best, possibly even the best song ever written on the face of the earth. It’s dark, mysterious, ominous yet powerful and meaningful lyrics. The badass rhythm guitar, the outstanding drum solo before the bridge riff... but then again, ...AJFA is the most badass album in all of history, in my opinion, and host to my favorite songs of all time. Perhaps sharing that spot with Metallica songs from other albums.
Wow I thought I was the only one to rank that exact album and that exact song as my No1 combined.
i love how fast your releasing these vids so could you make a megadeth one now
Every time you make a new Metallica video your tone improves. This is the best one yet. You’re getting that tight but big bass response and a lot of aggressive bite from the strings. I love the rawness of your passives pickups.
Now that I’ve watched this a few times. It sounds similar to the demo tone they used. Go listen to the demos and see what I’m talking about. Nice job mike.
You are the "One of a Million" players and teachers!......Wish i had 10% of your talent!......
Please give us a few more lessons! You are our absolutely favorite teacher on CZcams!
Thank you very much for you time you spend for streaming your videos.
You are amazing! Nice greetings from Vienna!
Dyers Eve main riff is supposed to be played as straight alternate picking , not 2-3-2-3-2-3 :D
Except for the intro ;). There it's like Mike plays it. Very hard to hear, though. Took me quite some time to hear it.
Florian Stumpf No it is always 2-2-2-2-2-2-2
@@florianstumpf4349 The only 2-3s are on the slower, downpicked parts like in the intro you mention.
James Hetfield himself said that it was 2-2-2-2-2-2 only
It's still good tho
I really love the Frayed Ends verse riff for some reason!
The whole song is full of amazing riffs. I recommend focusing on James' riff during Kirk's solo. It's so damn good!
@@Walamonga1313 one of James best work, love that part
Can’t help tapping along to these videos. Reminds me of the hours spent trying to learn these albums in my room with an epiphone sg and a laney amp 20 years ago. Great stuff. Made me pick up my guitar instantly.
I've enjoyed this series. Many others have too. You're an awesome teacher, and you've motivated thousands upon thousands of guitarists. I speak on the behalf of others when I say I appreciate and am inspired by your work. Don't stop what you're doing.
looking out for best st anger solos
Frayed ends riffs are criminally underrated
The ultimate riff song.
Thanks Man Great job, can't wait for more :D
37 ..And justice for all bass riffs ranked and performed
What bass? haha
@@TheArtofGuitar exactly
My goodness, the thick, aggressive tone, the cool guitar (love the color!)... so glad I had subbed to you!
You're doing an amazing job, man. Nice choices, although the Blackened main riff would always be my number one from this album. Again though, keep up the good work.
Tis a beauty, I think Jason wrote that right?
That guitar fill that happens every last bar of that main Blackened riff is frustrating as hell. Especially the picking is so undoable for me now.
I love this Metallica riff series. I've been playing guitar for two years, and this has kindve been motivating me to learn more Metallica riffs
I had an SG for my first guitar. Thanks Dad. It's amazing how well the SG can replicate all the heavy rock sounds. And of course your skill as well. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this series.
Hey man the guitar tone sounds awesome. Nice sound and great playing!
Great series !! I must say ! Pls cover more bands too!!! Keep up the good work mike!!!
I've been waiting for this! Yes!!
I just want to say thankyou for making the video, even if it wasn't designed as a lesson, it helped me learn some riffs that I don't have the ability to figure out by ear (mainly the clean bit from 'one')
Awesome! Brilliant riffs, well played and great tone!
Killer tone match. That clean chorus tone is amazing
Unreal, you keep doing Metallica and your my favorite You Tube Guitarist Thank You.
Ive always called this the greatest album of all time
This video confirms that. What a STACKED album
Hellyeah Mike 🤘🏽🤘🏽 Good stuff brother
Never thought Metallica could sound so good on an SG.
Why? Metallica has played Gibson guitars with humbuckers off and on since the early 80s. The SG sounds almost the same as the Gibson Flying V
*What I'm really looking forward is: Death Magnetic riffs*
Yes! Such a sweet album, thanks for the insights! Good ranking BTW.
Thanks for the video, very good list and guitar tone. 6:38, I think that riff starts with open power chord every second time, it makes it sound much better and you get that circular riff effect
Awesome job again! MUYA 🤘🤘🤘
I need this type of video for each remaining Metallica album!
Good video, the sound is amazing!
Excellent. Such a great album. You shred. Keep it up
The clean intro and clean breakdown riff of To Live Is To Die will always be two of my favorite Metallica riffs.
I felt instantly betrayed when you put AJFA as your second lowest. That’s my favorite song off of ajfa :((
For me the intro riffs from The Frayed Ends of Sanity are some of the best, greetings from Mexico man
Really loving this series a lot.
Thank you for doing those. I’ll always have to put the Frayed Ends pre-solo as number one.
But I’m surprised you didn’t put the Blackened (post solo) riff in there. SO powerful when it comes back in.
Thank you for playing the Bb note on the Blackened bridge riff. Almost nobody I’ve seen on CZcams plays that note, and it sounds 100% heavier when you play the Bb/Eb instead of just the Eb.
Oh, and when I like to play the pre-verse riff for The Shortest Straw, I like to stick some chorus on top of the distorted guitar sound. IDK if the guys intended to do that in the studio, or if they were so full of beer that the tracks just aren’t tuned as well (it can happen lol), but it’s got this chorus-like effect that makes it sound cold and deadly and even more cool.
Mindblowing, amazing playing! Wish I could be as good as you some day...
I LOVE THE FRAYED ENDS OF SANITY VERSE RIFF. Thanks bro.
Anyone else love that block of clean guitar from 1:55 to 2:20? That was my absolute favorite part of this.
Yessss my favorite album. Keep it up dude 👍
You should have played these riffs longer. I keep watching and listening to them on the speakers over and over again.
The clean tone is gorgeous 😍
Nice one . Your SG is awesome.
Awesome video 🤘
Nicely played!
Dude that pre-chorus riff on shortest straw legit i thought had #1 potential and i saw it at #33! (i’m a guitarist too and greeting from St. Louis!🤘)
Love it 👍so much from justice that can he learned from beginner to advanced player, literally all styles, classic album.
I bought this album on vinyl when it came out in 88, always been one of favourites....... A true masterpiece
Amazing 🤘🏻
Nice vid ! Guitar isolated tracks on YT are the best tabs ;)
only video you need to take with you to an island. the best riffs from the best metal album ever written.
Epic riffs, nice tone too man.
i fell in love with the way you play the intro of to live is to die
Loved your Metallica riff series
Do pantera or Zeppelin next
Very well performed!
I clicked Like even before watching your riffs of AJFA!
Yes, i did watch MoP riffs
This is awesomeeee :D
Being my all-time favorite Metallica album, I sat headbanging in front of my computer with the biggest smile on my face. 💜
Thank you for making this can’t wait for the black album
The blackened riff after the solo is sooo awesome, and has to be my #1 but the bridge riff is also soooo goood!
And justice for all post solo riff is one of the most headbanging riffs
And Justice for You,you're the Man who have the balls to make a top 37 of this freaking album!
And you played Flipping Off the others just like Kirk Hammett plays! You're Awesome
And my favorite too, this the most technical album from Metallica
Beautiful sg man
COMPLETELY agree with the top 10!
And Justice For All . A true Masterpiece .
YES!!! That Blackend riff is very much deserving of the #1 spot. Justice is (my opinion) one of the best albums Metallica has ever dropped on us and that opening song is up there as one of... If not THEEE HEAVIEST tracks they ever wrote. Good on you mate!
Always been my favorite album by them, very heavy!
