Sound mixer Steve Thompson didn't have to imagine. He had to live with enduring through the production of the album. His only regret was that he didn't record a studio mix of his own behind the backs of Lars and James. He was going to, but didn't, as it wasn't his album to produce. Due to the "garage-style" he could have produced his own mix in only two days. Now, the original recordings are too degraded to mix a new master, and Steve has been kicking himself in the ass ever since.

Sick and tired of hearing people say playing bass with a pick is cheating. This man laid down some of the heaviest, tightest bass grooves the metal world has ever seen. This man was the heart and soul of Metallica for 14 years, and wasn't appreciated for his efforts until years after he left the band. His creative drive was stifled, he was told to shut up and color, and if not for him, Metallica probably wouldn't have played ANY Kill Em All live in those 14 years. Put some respect on this man's name, because Jason Newsted did it all with a pick in his hand.
Playing bass with a pick is cheating! LOL
It's a matter of preference, but to my ear the pick adds aggression to the sound, which in the context of a metal band, is something you want. Just my opinion.
It's just a different style. More of favorite bands have bassist that use pics 🤷
Jason’s tone was sick on this album. Too bad we never heard it.
Type "and Justice for Jason..." then tell me the results...
I agree, Justice album in full is great, I'm not the greatest fan of Jason, but on this album he did really strong bass lines and he's very precise player (if he can adjust his precise momentums to Lars drumming:))

The only thing I can say negatively about Jason on this record is that he pretty much just followed Jame's rhythm guitar riffs identically. He never strayed off a little like Cliff did with his lil flares and runs. But that's apples to oranges I suppose. Jason fit Metallica like a f'ing glove and the Justice tour was the best metal performance I ever witnessed live. I feel very lucky to have seen both Cliff and Jason play. That is what bass is for.. To make the guitars and the music sound powerful. It's not for ego queens to impress people. It's for musicians who want to contribute to the music sounding great. That's why Jason is my favourite metallica bassist, and also because of his awesome vocals
You can see in the video documentation of the Black album that Jason wasn’t really welcome to mix it up on the bass a lot.
James and Lars kept a lock on him and his influence.
Especially James.
He didn’t invite any of his ideas in and complained about him the most after it all went down.
But, you can see in the Black album documentation that It was mostly James who stunted him. Jakes wanted him to follow the guitars.
And then would later blame Jason by not doing anything but following the guitar.
Ultimately why Jason left.
But……..
That was Metallica.
James and Lars
Then Kirk
Barely Jason
And that's the perfect bass as it should be.

Thanks to posts like this the fans who “know”, hopefully he knows how appreciated he is for his Metal contributions on bass.
I would have rather said criminally overrated
you can see how talented he is. Also for fans; I recommend Jason's audition records with the band.
So they definitely have the bass tracks. So why can’t the just remix this album and turn the bass up? This is my favorite Metallica record, but the absence of bass makes it a nine out of 10 instead of a 10 out of 10.
As I hear the bass almost always follows the lead, so maybe the bass is already there in the recording masked with the lead guitars. If you raise the bass volume you would overcrowd the mix or change the tone of the bass itself
There was a release of the album with the bass tuned back up.

This is awesome, thanks for posting.
Jason is beating the shit out of those strings. There’s a sharper attack because of the pick which sounds a bit more gnarly than the muted thud Cliff had from playing finger style. Listen to Jason’s audition recording, he sounds absolutely viscous. He even plays some counterpoint fills that don’t ape the guitars so it clearly shows he is capable of playing outside of Jame’s riffs. It’s a crime of the highest order to ghost his playing the way they did. This performance is easily on par with any of the other classics of the genre. This is world class bass playing…
It’s a re-recorded performance my friend, the bass was almost non existent in the original and wouldn’t be able to be extracted.
