Even the cheapest pens for something like the reMarkable2 have an eraser and pressure sensitivity, and the user experience is night and day! - the tip is also a lot thinner and more precise and doesn't require charging. I haven't used my Apple Pencil 2 in months since getting the reMarkable as the fat tip and the feel (even with paperlike and/or custom tips) is just not there.
I think that Apple did this to compete with Logitech which was/is a great buy b/c not everyone (like me) cares about the pressure sensitivity feature.
I remember when I had the Apple Pencil 2 (before it died on me, and I've been Logitech crayon ever since) even with the double tap I still changed pens, erasers, etc. by tapping the screen :-)
Great job Chris, love your videos.
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day.
I had iPhone 11 Pro Max and bought a stylus for sketching / note taking. Switched to iPhone 13mini and iPad mini with Apple Pencil. If pencil worked with iPhone plus models would make it a worthwhile buy I think.
My USB-C Pencil came in today (I’ve been using a 1st gen prior), and I don’t really notice the lack of pressure sensitivity (at least, not yet), so that seems to be pretty good for me! Alas, if I really need the pressure sensitivity, I can just pull out my Pencil 1 and use that. Also good for a backup.
I am frustrated when there is no double tap
Seems like it lost all the features that require a Bluetooth connection. But kept the ones that works without it.
Makes me wonder if you can use it on other iPads without having to pair it every time.
Would make sense then for use in classrooms.
Thanks for the review. Just in case I missed it - Do I need to pair it everytime (using thr USB C cable) I get disconnected? Or does it get stored/saved in the Bluetooth device list like the Airpods? I don't mind manually pairing it via the Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices but I hope it does not require me to plug it with a USB C everytime I get disconnected. Hope you can clarify. Thank you.
My hunch is that this is to prep for the next iPad Pro with the camera in the center for proper landscape mode. In order to do that, they can’t have the magnets there. So… Time for a forward thinking pencil which will work with the next iPad Pro.
Just a guess. Who knows.
its a worse way to even do this, why not just move the wireless charger over to the side, a usb c port just makes it more annoying to pair to the ipad. Apple is going backwards in functionality just so it “looks” good
i have two ipads, if i purchase this pencil will i be able to freely switch between ipads with the pencil without having to continuously reconnect it to bluetooth? i would like to be able to write on my ipad pro and then on my ipad mini without having to magnetically reattach it to the side each time.
seems like a step backwards.... 2018 wireless charging placing it on the ipad... 2023 = cable?
Whose not buying the Gen 2 these days. My mind is blown.
Some people did due to the lack of feature on that USB c one
iPad 10 users ig
Umm… everyone who has an iPad that the gen 2 won’t work with, which is a lot of people. 😂

Hey Chris I enjoy your content, do you have any advice to a new CZcamsr in the tech niche?
Don’t start unless you’ll keep at it for 7-10 years… if you do that you’ll figure it out.
Good video but I’ll just get the gen 2 next week
This new Pencil is clearly aimed at owners of the base 10’th generation iPad, which has no charging coil built in to charge a Pencil anyway since the area is now occupied by the landscape camera. This Pencil is intended to replace the first generation Pencil, which is still for sale only because the 9’th generation iPad is still for sale. Once that iPad is retired, that Pencil will go away and the USB-Pencil and Pencil 2 will be the only ones left. However, if Apple does indeed make the camera landscape in the revised iPad Pros, expected in March of 2024, then the Pencil 2 will probably go away to be replaced by a full-featured Pencil 3 that will be able to charge in whatever new wireless method Apple comes up with for the new iPads.
As its stands now this pencil makes the lineup look weird. And I do agree this should have launched last year and that apple should also have removed the Apple Pencil 1 and iPad 9. From a consumer perspective that would have made much more sense. However I think apple just did this to sell out their stock of soon to be discontinued products. Once the Apple Pencil gen 1 is gone this usb c pencil makes much more sense as an entry product alongside iPad 10. I do believe apple will discontinue the iPad 9 and the Apple Pencil gen 1 in 2024.
I bought a knock-off pencil for my iPad. It looks and functions in exactly the same way as this one, but it also has wireless magnetic charging. It cost $10 brand new.
Link?
Does it still work while plugged in?
YES and it charges extremely quick!
Can you still draw with this pencil while is connected to the charging cable?
Yes…AND it charges extremely fast!
Definitely better than gen 1
It's kinda moot point now but, why couldn't have Apple designed the 1st gen Apple Pencil this way? Like where you plug the lightning cable into a lightning port. Also, will this Pencil work with 9th gen and older iPads that support the Apple Pencil? Cause this would be beneficial for someone who may only have an older iPad but are maybe thinking down the road of getting a USB C iPad.
No it’s only compatible with USB-C iPads
Its waste of money purchasing this who have pro ipad. Rather spend little more and get the apple gen 2 .
Big fuss over Chinese plastic.
Why 🤮
