Three Dog Night is one of those groups that will always make you smile. They never pull that bad feel crap. You just have to sing along!
IDK "Easy to be Hard" may be one of the saddest songs ever written.
I call it soft rock , but man they were so good ! đđœ
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Shambala" and "Black & White" !!!! Three lead singers in this 70s hit machine!
edit-- Chuck Negron on lead vocal, the one with the mustache.
Black and white is a great song
Chuck Negron is one of the best singers in rock history, grossly underrated and overlooked.
I love Shambala, always makes me smile!
@@TheHeatherjane agreed seeing them live is everything though to their playful nature how talented they are good stuff peace and love my friend have a wonderful day
until the end when I think Danny Hutton takes over
Two huge blessings to this band, meeting Hoyt Axton who wrote Joy to the World, and Never been to Spain. The second having Paul Williams let them record this timeless gem.
Hoyt Axton the actor? Thatâs awesome, I never knew that!! I loved him as a kid. I knew him as an actor and never realized he was a musician. Wow what a naive kid I was!
Paul Williams also wrote Out in the Country. Beautiful
@@shellzmoe8966 oh yes! he wrote songs covered by the Carpenters, Bowie, even Elvis! I consider his masterpiece, The Rainbow Connectionâ, from the Muppet Movie. He worked with Jim Henson on a couple projects. He also wrote the music and starred in the film, Phantom of the Paradise, and a few years ago even collaborated with Daft Punk! Heâs a real renaissance man. My favorite singer songwriter.
The Drumming is superb on this track.
Their live version of "Eli's Comin" is a must watch!!!
Yes!
Yes, it was so good!
This song was written by a man named Paul Williams. He is an actor and singer songwriter.
He had a role in the Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Played an Orangutan. He also was in Smokey and the Bandit. Little fellow.
I have always loved this song. Great reaction as always.
So true!!
He also wrote , "Evergreen" that Barbara Streisand had the huge hit with....
Paul Williams wrote the music for "Bugsy Malone" as well as sang a lot of the songs.
He wrote a beautiful song for the TV movie "boy in the plastic bubble" which starred a young John Travolta.
Also on Star Trek Voyager, he played the leader of a planet that had never invented music. Hilarious cameo that was appreciated only by people who remembered his appearance. Plus, everyone on the planet was short.
That great sound comes from 3 amazing lead singers Chuck, Cory, and Danny
One of their greatest songs. I don't think they have a bad song. Others have already mentioned many of their songs, but one to do if you hadn't already is "Never Been to Spain".
This is another Paul Williams masterpiece with Chuck Negron ( The man with the mustache) on lead
Paul Williams was a beast.....I'll never forget him crossing over into television as his portrayal of Dr. Loveless in the Wild Wild West television movie (1979)đ„đ„đ„đ„
I saw them 4 times between 1972 and 1975. They was HUGE back then, they could do no wrong. It wasn't a big hit for them,, but my favorite song of theirs is Celebrate.
Salivate??!!
I saw them too. My favorite song was celebrate also. They had a few good ones though!
Props
what about joy to the world ?
I'm fairly sure this was HIT in Australia.
We loved them.
They had a few HIT songs in OZ.
Out In The Country is my favorite 3 Dog Night song although any of their songs are worth A listen. They covered some of the great writer's songs, like Laura Nyro and Hoyt Axton, so their library is very strong.đ¶âđ
And Harry Nilsson, and Randy Newman, and John Hiatt.
Fun fact, this song has been sampled numerous times in rap songs
A Three Dog Night is a night so cold you need 3 dogs to keep you warm, always loved the origin of their name. great band
I believe it is an Inuit, or Alaskan phrase, agreed, 3 Dog Nigbt
I live further south....I have a 3 cat night, lol.
love Three Dog Night
Floyd Sneed was the drummer for this group. He was from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Floyd's older sister's husband - Tommy Chong - bought him a drum set and Floyd became his band's drummer. Tommy and Maxine's daughter - Rae Dawn Chong - became a pretty well known actress.
Tommy's band was called the Calgary Shades (Tommy played guitar) and they moved to Vancouver BC hoping to get a break in the music industry.
Bobby Taylor joined the revamped band and they became Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers.
While opening for Ike and Tina Turner - Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard of The Supremes heard them and helped them get signed to Motown records where they had a Top 40 hit song written by Tommy Chong called "Does Your Mama Know About Me?"
While touring in Chicago - a family group called The Jackson Five opened for them and Bobby Taylor brought them to Motown where they were signed to a record deal. Bobby produced their first two albums and unfortunately - due to promotional purposes - when they went to California Diana Ross was given the credit for "discovering" them.
Tommy met a draft dodger from the US in back in Vancouver called Cheech Marin and they created the comedy Duo Cheech and Chong.
Floyd went down to LA and was playing in a bar band when Chuck Negron and Tommy Hutton heard him playing and asked him to join a band they were forming which became Three Dog Night.
Ain't it funny how things turn out?
I really enjoyed reading those tidbits of history.
Thanks
All three sing lead at times. They harmonize, something rare today. Near the end the guy singing backup is imitating a carnival barker. Shambala is probably my favorite of theirs.
My very first concert in 1973!! They have a long list of hits â€đ„đžđ¶ âOneâ âLiarâ âOut In The Countryâ âTry a Little Tendernessâ just to name a few â„ïž They had 3 vocalists all very capable of taking the lead đđŒ
They had a lot of hits back then. I think "Liar" is my favorite. Kind of a haunting vibe. We saw them at a festival in '72.
Yep guys they have a great sound with 3 strong singers either taking turns singing lead or all in harmony and a cracking band backing them up.
One of the most underrated bands!...They were awesome!...R.I.P Cory Wells!...Gone 7 years already way to soon!
This song was written by Paul Williams. It was first pitched to Karen and Richard Carpenter. They rejected the song and Paul pitched it to Three Dog Night. And, of course, the rest is history.
Witnessing how your musical appreciation has developed over time is so great. I loved this reaction. It made me wonder: Do y'all have a "song"? Like, they're playing "our song" kind of thing?
"Shambala", "Easy To Be Hard", "Celebrate", "The Show Must Go on", "Never Been To Spain", "One", "Black And White", "The Family Of Man", "Heaven Is In Your Mind", "Let Me Serenade You" and "Out In The Country" are among their best songs.
Fun facts:
Three Dog Night was the most successful music act on the Billboard Charts from 1969-1974.
This song was written by Paul Williams, who also wrote:
"Rainy Days And Mondays", "You And Me Against The World", ""Evergreen" and many other great hits.
Danny did the last part as a carnival barker.
he jokingly plays that part up live :)
Saw them live in 82 with all 3 Dogs, then saw Danny and Cory about a dozen times afterwards. Was going to see them in Memphis, and they canceled two weeks later Cory Passed. Havenât been interested in seeing them since
Watching the live vid of this song is a kick
This was a huge hit. Even my Dad liked it.
These guys were in such a zone in the 70's , hit after hit.
Should have watched the live version!!!!!!!!!!!
I almost never say this but there are a few live performances that really show their style , love this band but those videos will help you more understand the band. Keep rocking guys !
Boy you age yourself when you can remember singing these songs on radio when they came out ..life befor the internet !
Wife here..This song was HUGE when it came out..
7 years old when herd this 50 year old song in 1972.
Three dog night reference is a saying means how cold it is ! 1,2,3 Dogs to keep you warm !
Chuck Negron sung that one, the dark haired guy with the mustache. He sung 80% of their hits.
Yup, huge in the early 70s. Next song, gotta hear Black and White.
Got to see them about five years ago. One of the best concerts ever. Listen to âEliâs Coming.â
Maybe 2 Dog Night⊠Chuck Negron who sang lead on most of their top songs hasnât sang with them since 1985.
@@Rock_Snob 1 Dog Night. Unfortunately Cory Wells died back in 2015
Written by Paul Williams. He also wrote âRainy Days and Mondays.â â€
One of the top bands of the 70s. They polished up many previously released songs by other artists. "One" is a prime example.
The live version kills, check it!
My Mother's favorite song. Brings back so many memories.
Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide
I know all these songs growing up in the 60's and 70's. This is just the tip of the iceberg. You guys are beautiful. Thanks for appreciating all kinds of sounds. I do...
It's just a pop song about those old songs that we all listen to and hug our sweetie a little closer, because we know our love is just like that. Sometimes my girl and I will be listening to a song she's never heard before (guilty: my generation! - and she'll hear the lyrics and squeeze my hand :) ) Sweet song, sweet reaction.
You gotta watch the live version of this one.
I remember watching them on DON KIRSCHNER ROCK CONCERT, doing this very song.
part of the soundtrack of my childhood in the 70's
The Great Chuck Negron! No other voice like his!
I'm fairly sure this was HIT in Australia.
We loved them.
They had a few HIT songs in OZ
Written by the legendary Paul Williams. My favoritebsong written and recorded by Paul is 'Where Do I Go From Here,' which I would love to see you do.
My dad had 2 cassettes in his truck when I was a kid. We played this one out regularly.
This band was popular during my Mother's time and she was head-over-heals in love with the guy that has the giant moustache. She listened to them so much that I fell in love with them myself. They had many hits that I like but my two personal favorites are The Family of Man and Pieces of April. BTW - their name comes from the eskimos practice of sleeping with their dogs for the body heat, or so i've been told. A three dog night was apparently an especially cold night.
The best birthday present I've ever received was tickets to Three Dog Night. So much great music. Good times.
The guy with the mustache sings lead in this song
Vocalist Danny Hutton's girlfriend, actress June Fairchild (best known as the "Ajax Lady" from the Cheech and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a magazine article about Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night".
And Joy to the World is a gentle and great way to get psychedelic and a great song.
Pau Williams was a prolific song writer in the 60-70s.
He also played Little Enos Burdette in "Smokey And The Bandit".
One of the hundreds of songs written by Paul Williams that few people realize are his. he performed it himself on the Muppet Show (he wrote a lot of music for the Muppets) and in a guest shot on The Odd Couple.
in the period from 1970 - 1975 (after the beatle's breakup) Three Dog Night was the biggest selling band in the world...
classic song!
The song was PUNCTUATED.
I really love the 'false' ending and the restart.
Theyâre so great.. part of my childhood đđ»đ»
This and "Eli's Coming" are my two favorite Three Dog Night songs. Two different vibes but two great songs.
You need to do 3 dog Night black and white! A group that could have 4 guys sing lead vocal ,Legend!!!
One of the biggest acts in the world at that time.
Chuck Negron (moustache) sang most of the lead parts, and he can go from a whispering, tender delivery to a super-powered tenor with a great hard falsetto.
Danny Hutton sang âJust a good âole songâ in the final jam. Cory Wells is the other lead, and sings Mama Told Me Not To Come.
The band stuck together for many years but never wrote any of their own songs.
They were great at taking existing songs that never succeeded, and making them huge.
OMG! I remember this song on AM radio when I was like, three! Infectious to this day. Long forgotten songs are like a scent you haven't smelled in years, they bring so MUCH flooding back! Music is the best legacy of the human race. Peace and blessings to your FAMILY!!âŻïž
Some songs (like this) never get old.
Three Dog Night was derived from the middle-east reality that it got cold in the winter evenings and dogs were frequently invited into households to keep them warm and it would be declared a "three dog night" to keep them warm.
I know, right? True story. Freaky name but great music!
From 1970 to 1976 Three Dog Night sold more records worldwide, Eclipsing even the Beatles.
3DN back in the early '70s were monsters up there with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Masterful hitmakers. Did you notice the proto-disco percussion at the end? Simon and Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" is my request. It's one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded.
Another great song by Three Dog Night is the show Must go On (album version) went to number one in 1974..
Lex and Brad , what about say take a ride , Out In The Country, by Three đ¶đ, Dog Night , whata ya say. Definitely got to do Out In The Country.đŻ.
Watch On Soundstage 1975. Danny was playing around and Chuck kicks Danny in the behind! That concert was absolutely amazing! So funny! There are 3 lead singers.
As a Canadian of a certain age this is my teen years. A cold cold night is a 3 Dog Night just to keep warm.
Great music there such a big band one hit after lots songs all hits
âEliâs Comingâ, live 1975!!!
Always a class act. Everytime!!
Pieces of April one my favorite songs, out of all their hits!
GREAT group from my youth
the road to shamballa ...
They have such true harmony. Just like the Eagles did, both bands made being a teenager then awesome!
You might want top see some of their live stuff. They play around, for the audience. Definitely worth a look.
Lex, ****the word that fits what you were looking for is "prosody".**** Prosody, in singing lyrics, has to do with how different segments of words, full words or string of words are emphasized or de-emphasized.
Emphasis or de-emphasis can most often be created through varying pitch, length of sound, loudness of sound, quality of sound and/or pausing before or after the sound.
I hope that helps!
The one with the mustache.
The dude with the mustache is singing this.
Such a talented band â€
Brad if you like Three Dog Night you will love the song "Out in the Country" from 1971. It has some good vocals and a "catchy" melody. It was a big hit back in the day. These guys are good.
Lex said "Devil woman", both Cliff Richard and Ringo Starr did songs by that name.
That is a cold beat on the verses. I'm surprised no one has ripped it off yet.
The lead singer is the guy with the mustache! I had a big crush on him!
If you're interested there are a bunch of videos on CZcams of them performing all of their hits from the seventies.
I'm watching this like I've seen it before CZcams is showing it as unseen then I remembered I watched this live đ
same guy who sings lead on "One" sings lead on this one
There is a live performance of this where the very dark-haired guy really goes off with the chorus in a James Cagney manner. You might want to look up James Cagney to see what I'm talking about.
Classic
So many you could pull/review..."The Show Must Go On", "Joy to the World", "Eli's Coming", "Liar", "Black and White", "Never Been to Spain"....and so on
Eskimos called it a 3 dog night when it was really cold and needed to use 3 dogs to keep them warm instead of 1 or 2 dogs đâđŠșđâđŠșđâđŠș
I bet I heard this 100 times at the city pool over a few summers. It was big pool side music. In our small town at least.
The story is that if it was a very cold night, then it was a 3 Dog Night.
The men around the campfire would sleep with the dogs to keep them warm.
I haven't heard this one in so long that I had forgotten it exists, but I remember loving this song and I still do. Whichever part of the group was most responsible for their arrangements was a genius / were geniuses.
One
Is a must listen
They are hilarious in their live concert videos! React to those if you haven't already! So underrated!!!!
