I grew up in Edmonton, a born and bred Oilers fan... My next favorite team was always the Kings.. I just love the classic logo and the black and white.. I dunno.. Maybe cause Gretzky was on the kings for a while too, right after Edmonton...
I hope things turn around for the Kings next year or the year after. Best of luck!

I mean this in the nicest way possible, I really don't want this match up again in round one....lol. It's the stupid divisional system that keeps making this happen. Capitals and Penguins played each what, at least four years in a row? I get that they're trying to push rivalries, but it really gets so tiresome to play the same team every year, even if it favors your team.

Im an Oilers guy who's been in it for the long haul in this Oilers vs Kings trilogy and I have to say that I think Kempe was the only really outstanding Kings player throughout all 3 series. Kopitar and Doughty have their moments but Kempe was consistently their most dangerous player. Dude has a sick release, he makes you nervous when he has time in the offensive zone. Unfortunately though, too much of the rest of the roster went AWOL.
I was particularly surprised at how ineffective Danault and Moore were this year and that is not to mention how brutal PLD was. The Kings are at a crossroads, it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

As a King's fan congratulations to the Oilers, I think the best change has been Paul Coffey and Kris Knoblauch's strategy along with the overall improved poise and play of the Edmonton Oilers. I don't think the Kings are any worse than the last 2 years, but something about the Oilers going up 1-0 and going up 4-2 and then switching to a really defensive style really makes me think this might be their year. If the Oilers are down the Oilers can play an open style of hockey, but when they are up they completely switch to something similar to what my Kings would do in the regular season.

Not in a limbo at all tbh. The Kings weren't even picked to make the playoffs last year and overachieved. They're still a year or two away from their Cup window, lots of young players 21-23 years old (Byfield, Clarke, Spence, Portillo) who all made huge strides this year.
If the Oilers don't win it all this year they're going to panic. Nine years and counting of McDavid/Draisaitl and absolutely nothing to show for it, there's your limbo...

As a Kings fan I don’t know what we do from here. We are maxed out at the cap and we don’t have an elite player. If you have an elite player you might be able to contain McDavid. We traded faber and a first for fiala and vilardi iafallo and a 2nd for PLD. We traded our best assets and got worse two years in a row. No pp goal means you don’t have enough elite talent. Kopitar is 38 years old. He should not be your best player. But he is.

I don't know about that. As an Oilers fan, I really really like Kempe and Byfield, Doughty and Kopitar are still excellent players, and there's a few coming up. The PLD trade was brutal, the extension was worse, but I don't think it's bleak at all for the Kings.

    • @CC-of5xl
      @CC-of5xl Před 16 dny +3

Elite players have nothing to do with containing Mcdavid. It's about team systems. Kings are a top defensive team but their style is just too slow to stop Mcdavid and Draisaitl. The only strategy that's worked against the Oilers is to just outscore them. I mean even the Avs didn't hold Mcdavid back the year they won. He was still over a ppg and they did everything they could to contain him as a team.

Good series coming from an Oilers fan. What do you think is the change that needs to be made? It seems the Kings are in a really weird spot. Both goalies were on one-year deals, you have some aging stars that are playing well enough to remain good, but not good enough to succeed, and now you have a rising star in Byfield who looks like will continue to flourish, if surrounded by good players. Why goalies keep coming out of the net when they know that kind of thing is a possibility (like it literally JUST happened again in the Isles series) is mind boggling lmao. I thought that might just be the type of flukey crap to push this one to a 6th game. Thankfully, LA kept giving away free goals with penalties so that one didn't matter all that much in the end. I genuinely don’t get how much copium the Kings fans were huffing tonight. If it aint the Oilers being PP merchants and the refs being paid off it’s about momentum like… You got scored on first in 5v5 and proceeded to get a lucky bounce which is the only reason you were in this game to begin with and you keep insisting that THESE are the reasons you lost the series? I mean come on… the Kings had zero offence during the entire serie and they couldn’t go through the Oilers trap when they were playing defensive. Your special units were horrific and the Oilers had a combined % of 153% at some point in this serie. (the NHL average is around 107% for the pk% and pp% combined). Like i’m sorry but no matter how many bullshit fucking excuses you want to spew out there the Kings were never in this serie. That’s just it. There wasn’t a challenge.

Oilers put the Kings to bed (and off to their summer) for the third straight year in round 1. This time it only took 5 games (last year it took 6 and the year before 7). There are some stats that glare right at you on this one. Kings 57 hits to the Oilers 27. Kings 34 faceoff wins to the Oilers 24. Oilers 1/5 on the PP and 100% on the PK (again) but 2 goals came within seconds of the PP ending. Oilers 9 giveaways to LA's 4. Oilers 13 Takeaways to the Kings 2 and a huge one for me Oilers 22 blocks vs the Kings 12. The Kings had challenges getting it even TO Skinner.
The first LA goal was an unlucky bounce and the last one they had pulled their goalie for a man advantage (then after closing within one they take a stupid penalty and poof go their chances). The first Leon goal took a review to confirm as Riddich has the puck in his glove but the glove had crossed the goal line so PP goal. The Oilers owned the special teams battle in this series. Their PK remained 100% throughout and they got a lot of goals on the PP. Fiala took an embellishment penalty while saying "I believe I can fly" after a short Foegele hook (so we got coincidental minors there). I mean this isn't football (what some call soccer) where embellishment is an art form (typically paint by numbers done by the totally blind with the cap still on the marker but...).
Hope you enjoyed the stats and take care all.

I'm happy that all these flukey goals are going in now and not later down the line when the Oilers can't afford them. Game one was filled with horrible bounces off the D, broken stick to a clear 2 on 1 then tonight with that gift off the stantion. Skinners numbers may not show this, and his off game in game two didn't help, but he really shut the Kings down. With all the doubt some Oiler fans have about him in the Playoffs from last year, I hope those weird ones dry up and he continues to play really, really well.

Honestly, not a shocking result. The Oilers are a better team than last year, ESPECIALLY defensively thanks to Coffey, which only makes Skinner look better. The Kings the last two games had some really decent puck and zone possession time, but that doesn't actually mean anything if the Oilers collapse on the puck well and take away the danger areas and thus you can't get any good looks at all.
And the Oilers on the PP are just ... NASTY. They move the puck so smoothly, SOOO many options, McDavid can move around wherever he wants opening up lanes, Drai is always in his office so teams always have to keep him in mind, but you've also got that big Bouche bomb option from the point which is fast and accurate. Hyman is continuing to cook. There was a brief time when the Kings collapsed three defenders on the net and it stopped the Oilers for literally one PP until McDavid moved around and solved it. It's like watching the octopus with the corked bottle with a fish inside. You know it's only a matter of time until he solves the problem and gets that fish out.
If it wasn't for crazy bounces and freaky strange goals, the series easily could have been a sweep.

Unfortunately it played a factor in the outcome of this game. That being said, to win the cup you need to win games with "bad officiating" its just the nature of it, its part of the reason special teams are play such a big factor in the playoffs and the kings pk was just horrendous, not going far with a pk like that lol! Not too sure LA would've been any happier with Dallas at this point tbh. Their one hope would've been getting Nashville's spot.

I never liked the fans heckling the goalie. Sure, if he’s a player who wanted out or left a team for more money, I guess it’s passable. Some random opposition goalie? It’s childish, especially if they haven’t done anything except be the opposition goalie. If they tripped or slashed one of your team’s players, fine. But otherwise, why? Cheer for your team, get angry when the other team actually does something cheap or dirty, but because they exist? Quite frankly, if you listen to guys like Zadorov, it fires some guys up and you might not want to do that.

I agree. I don't know why that has been a thing. Winnipeg and Vancouver have also been doing it. And we're seeing what karma can deliver there. Peg should've been worried about their own net, and the Nucks fans seem to be turning Saros into the monster version of Saros. Not what they want.

Could have been a great series. But the refs might as well have worn Oilers jerseys. Bad calls out of nowhere against the Kings and obvious Oiler penalties missed/overlooked. & not just game 5. Congrats to Oilers, PP is amazing. But the 5 on 5 was great hockey. Shame for it to be decided by controversial calls.

Kings decided to play dirty instead of playing actual hockey, so they got called. That's how it works. They're by far the most dirty and chippy bunch of diving whiners in the NHL. It's very satisfying punting them out again. Hope to do the same next year, except in 4.

I think this is the only game in the series where Kings fans could have a case for some bad calls, the rest of the games were pretty well reffed. It makes it look way more lopsided when one team is super successful on the PP, and the other team gets none.

@@gideonvictor I watched it just fine, there were a lot of things that could have been called both ways, but they only called 1 penalty against each team. @@gideonvictor If you're trying an odd way of saying I think that there were more missed calls than calls made, then yeah, there were certainly more calls that weren't made than calls that were made. Without even having to put any thought into it, there was an attempted breakout by McDavid where he was clearly held up without the puck that prevented a clear scoring chance that normally would have been an interference penalty. Like I said, the refs chose to have a game where they didn't make any calls, which clearly favors the Kings who were running around trying to impose their will physically.
