    Canes attendance: What really started the turnaround was the team beating the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Capitals, in a thrilling seven game series in the 2019 playoffs. They then swept the Islanders before losing to the heavily favored Bruins in the conference final. That was then the fans really began believing the team had turned itself around.

      The coaching in the years before Canes made the playoffs was dismal..when Rod was the patient assistant. What a difference when he came on board as Head Coach!
      Justin Williams did a nice final couple seasons there..and maybe his late game heroics in his career..the successor to that uniqueness still to come for this team.
      Fans have been treated to a lot of fun seasons to watch since. Certain the management will continue to improve on things. They have alluded to this. 🥅🏒🎯🌟✅

    In my opinion, we can go 1 of 2 routes in the rebuild:
    1. Go all in on high end offensive talent, and skimp on the goalie - the idea behind this approach is that you might not get great goaltending or defensive effort, but your high end talent will get you so many goals it won't even matter. Colorado or Edmonton style.
    2. Stick with the current system, where we have a bunch of players that are jack of all trades but master of none. However, if we stick with this system we ABSOLUTELY need high end goaltending because we will not be scoring enough goals to outpace mediocre goaltending. And we will need those crucial saves to keep us in games, especially during the playoffs.

    • @MisterVercetti
      @MisterVercetti Před 20 dny +4

      Colorado's not really a good example, since they're a bit more well-rounded than full-on offense. I'd say the best analogues are Edmonton and Toronto, and just ask either of those teams how well the "all-in on offense" strategy has worked for them.

    • @SimRacerSteve82
      @SimRacerSteve82 Před 20 dny +22

      Was just going to say this. Goal scoring wasn't the issue in the way it has been in the past. In the past they just would stop scoring all together. This year was the PP and the goaltending. I tend not to fuss about goaltending, but Freddy literally kept falling on his ass. 4 goals, and nearly 5, were caused by him losing his footing or his post.
      If the Canes score just 4 more PP goals, which would have made them 5-21(still less than their reg season %) OR Freddy stops those 4 goals, we likely win the series in 5 or 6 in the same manner the Rangers won.

    The Hurricanes are a well built and well coached team, with huge depth, but without enough game breakers to put them over the top when they need someone to step up compared to the teams they meet after the first round of the playoffs. That and the spent the season as the only NHL team without an AHL farm team, which can impact your prospects, both in terms of development and callup transition.
    This season they have a ton of bodies to either resign and/or replace, including their head coach. Talk about the owner low balling Brind'Amour, despite what the GM wanted to do, will have a lot of teams lining up to talk to him if he's available. Andersen has been good, but getting old and gets injured a lot. The decisions they make in the offseason, starting with their coaching situation, will likely be the most important offseason in a long time for this franchise.

Freddie wasn’t the problem, he had a few moments but the game 6 collapse absolutely wasn’t him. Large notes: Kuznetsov wasn’t the guy, love him but Guentzel is who this system needs. Guys who have played their own kind of style just don’t really fit short term. Rod should’ve put 86 with 59 more often. Those two had small moments of success the little bit they were together. Grand scheme: Canes play man on fire all year. Playoffs show up and they don’t have that next gear. There’s no Kreider, there’s no guy that takes it and makes it his game. As a Hurricanes fan, this year’s ending had a very different feeling. I think the abrupt 180 degree turnaround in the elimination game is causing a lot of emotional reactions that don’t make a lot of sense. Also in years past it felt like the team was building toward something, whereas now there’s not a clear answer as to where they can expect improvement to come from…
    Re: Freddie, I think most fans were feeling that he earned the starter’s crease, but he hadn’t proven that he could be an every game starter. Some of the mistakes he made (particularly the falling over) could be attributed to fatigue/health. So it’s really frustrating that a very capable backup in Kochetkov who proved he could serve the team well only got 2 total games in the 2 rounds.
    I have no idea what’s going to happen with next year’s team; I think Necas is the big name that’s most likely to be the odd man out in terms of cap room. Jarvis is probably the one most likely to stay. I think Brady Skjei is a higher priority than Pesce, but I think Pesce is likely to be less expensive due to his unfortunate injury situation and not being as much of a scorer. Teravainen’s fate is anyone’s guess; he’s a huge part of the team identity but is he seen as part of the core going forward? Martinook really should be back; though my guess is the signing will be another Dundon special (unnecessarily drawn out and dramatic).
    And Rod Brind’Amour will be back; he will retire before leaving NC to coach somewhere else. That’s not hyperbole; Raleigh is his home (his wife has strong roots there too) and he doesn’t want to live somewhere else.

    I think two of the biggest mistakes Canes have made is keeping their goaltender situation as it is for too long and signing Kotkaniemi. Every year they either get injuries or bad performance or both from their goalies. And Kotkaniemi's cap hit has made it hard to get good 2nd line center every year. They fall to same pit holes every year. I hope they make drastic changes or they might loose their opportunity to Stanley cup.

    I believe that we had the talent to have beaten the Rangers but doubtful that we could have gone much farther because of injuries (Pesce), goal tending (Rod's stubborn insistence that Anderson carry the load), an an abysmal power play.
    Don Waddell has his plate full with a redesign of the team for next year. Several players need to be re-signed/extended: Chatfield, Martinook and Skjei for starters. I don't know if Jake Guentzel will re-sign but he would be a part of a potent first line with Aho & Svech. Pesce may not be worth as much as he thinks he is due to injuries but a team friendly extension would make sense. Would love to see us move Anderson if that's possible. I think KK is an enigma. As a fan since they arrived in '97, the RBA has hands down been their most consistently successful era so far. The other good/great seasons were flashes. However, like you pointed out, the playoff exits during his tenure bring about a lot of questions such as roster/players, coaching philosophies, and coaches. And the exits have been tied to special teams, offensive ineptness, and I can't discount injuries at the worst time(Svech, Andersen, Terravinen(sp?), Pesce, Fast...). Puck luck and hot goaltenders can only explain so much for the post season exits, but it curious that the playoff issues/trends only show there...and not really in the regular season. I really wonder if a roster overhaul to upgrade the talent is the best answer. But I think Rod has to look at his systems and playoff related breakdowns and change something, because it's been a consistent answer on the exits.

Guentzel is the multi-million dollar question.. I believe every effort should be made to sign him, as the Aho-Guentzel-Jarvis line was amazing (why did we not see it in the playoffs?!?!?)... I believe to offset cap limitations, we will at least see Morrow, and possibly Nadeau... Really the 2019 Boston series was the only one that wasn’t close.
    The 2020 Boston series was 2-1 Boston lead, and in game 4 the Canes had a 2-0 lead in the 3rd and lost that game in regulation. Then got into penalty trouble in game 5 after they lost all morale. They hold that lead and win game 4 it’s a 2-2 series and who knows what could be different.
    In 2021, Tampa was leading the series 2-1 and in game 4 the canes had a 2 goal lead in the 3rd period and lost the game in regulation. Again they hold on to the lead in that game, it’s a 2-2 series and coming back to Raleigh for game 5 with all the momentum. But this was the start of the coming across fantastic goalies on the top of their games. Also game 1 and 2 of this series were 1 goal extremely low scoring games.
    2022 was just a hard fought series with each team winning home games until game 7 when rangers won. Playing Igor on the top of his game
    2023 they came across Bobrovsky who was on one of the best goalie runs of recent history. And every single game was a 1 goal game. With game 1 going 4OT which is a 50/50 game, same thing with game 2 going to OT. That series just as easily could have gone 4-0 Canes sweep. Also doing this without Svech who was on a tear before his ACL tear
    This season, the canes had the tools, their power play dried up and gave up to many PP opportunities and allowed too many grade A chances to the best team in the league. This year was the chance. Also games 2 and 3 went to 2OT and OT respectively, this series I think should have gone NYR-CAR-CAR-CAR-CAR based on how the games actually were played. Not to mention the fact that the canes had another 2 goal lead in an elimination game and blew it. Had they held that lead and won game 6, they probably win game 7 against a fully mentally defeated rangers team

I would also try to sign Chatfield over any of the Dman they have due, Buyout KK and try to trade Freddie.. This team I feel, I'm biased but I feel with better goaltending, they are in the Cup finals this year but just being honest about it, Freddie was not good enough in the playoffs and alot of it was mechanics. Save percentage tells a story but a good goalie stops way more of those saves he didn't make. At least two softies in the last game for example. I think the stress is that if they do try to get another year out of Anderson, it will actually get worse and the team will have less confidence.. Its very, very hard to win it all. Just keep taking cracks at it and hopefully 1 year you breakthrough, similar to the 2018 caps. At least the Canes are constantly competing and making conference semis and conference finals, it could be alot worse
