It will NEVER cease to amaze me Emma. Not only by the amount of research you do, and the work involved producing these in-depth videos. And yet you still manage to produce extra content for us....while still managing to look like you should be on the front cover of Vogue.

I appreciate your compassionate focus on the true victim. It’s hard sometimes to feel the sympathy for someone who may not have done everything in life with the best intentions. Thank you for reminding me that even people who maybe are not the nicest still do not deserve to lose their lives to violence.

I don’t have split personality but I have antisocial/disassociation disorder. I can’t form friendships/relationships like a normal person. I’ve only felt love for 2 people in my life. My mother (she passed away from breast cancer) and my now ex wife. (We were together 15yrs married for 10) The rest of humanity could be removed from the living population and it wouldn’t effect me at all

Your mockery of TikTok had me rolling 😂 I can't stand it.
I personally suffer from debilitating anxiety from childhood and to see some people on there describing anxiety etc obviously have no clear understanding of how absolutely devastating it can be for your life when it gets out of control. I'm talking housebound level for myself... I'm getting better now slowly, after a very toxic long term relationship, and I have left all social media - I can tell you it's such a relief! If you suffer I've urge anyone to come away from it even for a short time. :)
Id love you to cover the physcological effects of social media and mental health - I would find it fascinating.
Awesome case as per usual. I would definitely categorise this as a premeditated murder for sure. X

That level of anxiety is *very* tough - I hear you. You may have already read it but the Panic Away Manual, which is a downloadable PDF, really helped me some years ago when I was having severe panic whenever I had to meet clients & was self medicating with an enormous amount of Valium. It worked for me completely. I wish you well on your journey - good luck!

I relate, I feel the same way when people claim to have autism and act like it's this mild quirk that barely affects their life. It really does misinform others who don't know better, or make them think legit regular cases like us are exaggerating rather than being realistic/honest.

But she had lots of support had a good career therefore income so no excuse unless it was at the time of the acknowledgment of the affairs or love child x then perhaps manslaughter but she planned every step and sat with his mum getting sympathy from her all the while that ladies son was feet from her in a shallow grave 😢no sorry no sympathy here x she could have and should have left his bed and moved on with her life and found someone who respected her but for battered wife (not pc I know) syndrome others would have heard about the abuse in most cases or seen her mood plummet over time x and that wasn’t the case x

    • @paulchristopher8634
      @paulchristopher8634 Před 2 měsíci +3

I’m not saying that this was payback time for all the years she had suffered from abuse from her partner. However I think there is more to this case than meets the eye.
Are you sure she wasn’t a psychopath. She had a split personality. One side was Fiona Beal and the other side a split personality ego she called Tulip. Furthermore her partners family was convinced that she was pure evil in the sense that his murder was planned with precision. It want the spirit of the moment, for example she went out and brought a utility knife, compost and some cable ties

Just because this woman appeared to have a good education, a reasonably well paid job and some support around her it does not mean she could break the cycle of emotional abuse. Would like to know what in her past made her emotionally blind and a permanent victim in her own mind.
What she did was horrific and her sentence was well deserved. But when Emma spoke of the rage " bubbling and festering in her it says to me that somewhere she learned to bottle stuff up.

I do not have DID with personalities. But I do blackout and have been diagnosed with trans global amnesia. It's very scary to not be able to trust your mind and to know that your brain shuts off. The ability to form a memory for certain amount of time really weird. I last experienced it 3 years ago and my kids thought i was having a stroke. Went to the hospital and for 9 hours. I couldn't remember a thing from the time I blacked out, the police, not the ambulance, not putting the dog away. Not the invasive tests to make sure it wasn't a stroke. It wasn't a heart attack like it, but I could remember everything up to that point. And I can remember everything from the first time. And I heard my daughter say oh she's back.

How sad, that must have been a scary journey to receive the diagnosis for that, I happened to read about one day as I’d watched a upload of Chase Hughes from The Behaviour Panel talk about his diagnosis of another rare brain disease. They sound quite similar. I hope you can stay well ❤My dads diagnosis of PLS, a rare form of MND also took years, his consultant always tells him at his check ups that his positive attitude to life & refusing to give in to his illness has kept the usual timeline of deterioration at bay, she tells him that he is her longest surviving patient! I thought that was quite shocking but dad even took that as a positive sign! Keep strong & take care. Sending you love x

Im not sure if you didnt know this or not but Emma was doing true crime here in the UK more than ten years ago. TV Documentaries such as Britains Darkest Taboos for example (there are several but I can't remember exactly but its easy enough to look them up.) She would comment per her psychology/counselling perspective. Theyre all well worth watching although they do also feature other brilliant professionals such as David Wilson (criminologist), Kerry Danes (crriminal psychologist) and the absolutely brilliant Laura Richards who was trained at Scotland Yard and FBI.

THANK YOU for speaking on a summary of the reality of Dissociative Identity Disorder. As someone who grew up with a parent diagnosed with DID, it at times can be very frustrating when people disregard or disrespect the diagnosis. *To note: Yes, alters in a system CAN be abusive (from experience), but I still acknowledge as someone who specializes in Research (inclusive of psychology) that not all pwDID have abusive behaviors. Some pwDID can distinguish between alters and have an “inner-world” amongst themselves, but to constantly be aware of which fracture/alter/part is fronting is highly unlikely. This is something that would be more obvious to the people around someone with DID, including a specialized therapist.
DID, BPD/ EUPD, and Schizophrenia are the top three most psychologically complex and distressing disorders to live with; They are immensely misunderstood and misrepresented and it is foul to pretend to have any of them.
Never fail to impress and be appreciated in your research and coverage of cases you speak on, Emma.
You’re my personal favorite crime journalist due to, yes, your diligence and dedication, but the addition of your personal experience and knowledge from working in the professional spaces that you have, and even your personal opinions. I know some may disagree with biases, but I can relate to them quite often and sincerely appreciate your acknowledgment of such.

Me too! It’s horrific! The suffering she endured in her short is heartbreaking. I watched about 15 videos with stories of extreme CA to children, little toddlers & innocent babies like Brianna. I had to take a break for a while & watch comedy to try & distract my mind from the awfulness of their suffering. As soon as I read your comment thoughts come back instantly. I’d never wish death on any child but the knowledge those little ones are at least pain free. So so sad…. 💔🤍❤️‍🩹

It’s such a devastating case. I always light a candle on her birthday each year. I just want her to be remembered and there’s nothing else that I can do. I’ve no idea how her mother who’s since been let out of prison, can live with herself. Some cases just stay with you and this was one of them.

This does my head in. The thought that if you plan it you know what your doing. That is SO not true. I don't even know where that thinking comes from. When people are that unwell they can have no capacity an plan something down to the letter.
When I was VERY poorly in 2018 an before I made plans, detailed plans to unalive my "dad" who believe me deserves it. I didn't have capacity. Legally, I was sectioned more the once because once I got that level of unwell I was trying to plan how to get to him, that's all that was in my head, nothing else, not my 5 beautiful amazing children, him...who ruined my life, my mums, my (half) sister an through that not a dad to my brothers. It caused things that are unimaginable to normal people. So yes you can absolutely make plans when your unwell. Now I'm well I would never do anything like that because his not worth my life or my childrens. An she was with him 17 year and I feel like you really played down his abuse like it's just something people do when the stressed an upset. If what she says is true you cannot imagine the torment and torture and psychological hell from been put down, called names, made to feel like nothing an it's well known just how hard women can find it to "just leave" if what she says is true iv no sympathy for him. Maybe don't abuse and treat people like utter shit an expert flowers in return. The victims are her and his mother. Not him. Not many people have been through upto 20 years of torture from words so haven't a clue what it can cause to someones psych. It CAN literally send you crazy.

I absolutely 10000% agree with this, no disrespect to emma. but abvsers are not just "ok person who may be kinda rude and hard to get along with" like we are talking about someone throwing trash out a car window or flipping off a grandma in traffic. its abvse. for nearly 20 years. he did monstrous things and met a monstrous end. if he did not knowingly and willingly abvse her, he would be alive.

There’s been times my mum pulled me up on attitude/behaviours I’m not even aware of and it is so so hard to fix those things
I always feel awful afterwards but I’m not a danger to others. If anything I’m only a danger to myself

I find it to be an extra evil that many killers have when they try to use various mental health issues as a defense. Of course things like psychosis and delusions can cause people to do things they wouldn't have done if they weren't suffering that, but usually, people use autism or even depression as a defence and I think it's literally making victims out of people legitimately suffering from those things. Because it does halt the progress of the acceptance and understanding of those things.

As someone who was diagnosed with DID some 10-ish years ago, there are always some things I want brought up and this feels like a pretty safe avenue to do so? ftr though, none of this is important to read unless you really want to, and this is mostly working back through years of therapy at this point. My experience is not absolute, and honestly, its very possible that I don't have DID but rather one of the linked but very similar conditions (ala. DDD, C-PTSD, etc).
So, first off: There is actually a lot of argument within the psych community about whether or not DID is its own condition, or a presentation of C-PTSD, as many or even most of the symptoms are shared between the conditions: Including disassociation, derealization, etc. Another condition that fits into this ballpark is BPD, with research further exploring whether this condition is just another expression of C-PTSD. There is also discussion of a genetic component in the condition, and if that decides how your brain responds to trauma. The main distinguishing factors mostly seem to relate to the presence of other personalities, the degree of maladaptive daydreaming, and the extremity of experienced emotions (in regards to BPD, though I can't really speak too much on BPD).
As an aside, it is very uncommon to be diagnosed with DID before the age of 20 (at least in Oz). This is largely owing to the influence your hormones have on you during your development years, and the uncertainty that creates in regard to diagnosing long-term behaviours. If someone is claiming to have been diagnosed as a teenager, either they have incredibly extreme symptoms or they are lying.
Another thing is that not every individual with DID has alters in the sense of seperate identities. It's the most commonly depiction of the condition, but it's really only 1 presentation of it; More often, it tends to just correlate to the presence of 2+ distinct personalities. For example, you might have two versions of the same identity with the distinction being what memories they have, their personalities, and their likes/dislikes. This is especially common in people who have gone through the work of consolidating the personalities, as one of the things they teach you to do is to stop referring to alters by separate names and instead emphasize that they are all the same person. True consolidation is incredibly rare, so this is the more frequent end result where you're able to largely reign the condition in and exist as a consistent being.
As an aside, I really hate the way "switching" is presented in media and online in general. It may just be very distinct from my own experience, but it feels so... Hollow? Compared to the experiences of everyone I've ever talked to with the condition. It always presents as if there are very firm and clear lines between personalities, and as though they cannot inmesh. In reality, as with anything else in your brain, the lines are incredibly foggy and not always clear.
Others symptoms also include things like maladaptive daydreaming, or the presence of an internal world that the individual can't differentiate from the greater world outside. The ability to "switch off" almost and inhabit that internal world while your physical sense continues on is almost as big a diagnostic criteria as the presence of personalities. I will note that while daydreaming is a very common thing, and maladaptive daydreaming itself is very common across a lot of conditions, the main issue within DID/C-PTSD/related conditions tends to be the degree of it. It can genuinely reach a point where the person is unable to distinguish between the imaginary and the real, to a very serious and distressing degree. This was my own personal biggest issue.
A very important point with this kind of daydreaming as well is: You cannot control the internal world. There is no agency, or power, over how things unravel and occur. You are experiencing that world in much the same way you experience the real world, which further blurs the lines between the two. This lack of control is one of the main issues with this behaviour.
The lack of concisiousness and awarenss that Emma is describing in this video also tends to refer to fugue states. Fugue states DO occur within people with DID, but in my experience, they tend to be on the more extreme end of the condition. More often, it's not a complete lack of awareness but more like existing in a fog (SEE: Brain Fog and other similar terms/conditions).
Imagine you have one hand on a steering wheel, while someone else has both on it. Complete and utter lack of awareness is super uncommon, and you'll get a lot of warning signs in the build-up to the condition reaching that point.
If you start to experience fugue states, in general, reach out to someone immediately. They are not unique to DID, and they can be signs of greater issues in your mind.
