  • "If Ukraine stay and fight and they buy some time for intelligence assets and surveillance assets to be brought on to the location, things are seen pretty easy and most forces, especially armour, have to disperse."
    The Russian push towards Kharkiv will struggle to put much further given Ukrainian resistance without further armour as Ukraine brings forward defensive equipment, says Dr Patrick Bury.

    Just wanted to say that the reason why Ukraine did not build defences right on the border with Russia is because the people making them would have been killed. The west has stated how Ukraine is not allowed to use western weapons on Russia, so the solution was quite simple. Build defences a few kilometres back so as not to be right under Russian noses first and foremost. Then if or when Russia did launch an attack, then Ukraine would have an area on Ukrainian territory, where they can use western weapons on the attacking Russians, thus not breaking the agreement made with the west. Plus the defences would be in place and not destroyed while people had tried to build them.

    Russia’s Achilles heal is that I doesn’t have an air power doctrine of any substance.
    Russia has only fought one modern high intensity conflict against a near peer rival, before Ukraine. That was WW11.
    And the allies had massively degraded the German Air Force before the Soviets went on the offensive. So the only other Russian high intensity conflict Russia has fought was largely a land war.
    So Russia will never attain air superiority over Ukraine. (Particularly with F16’s on the way).
    And without air power, armour will always be vulnerable. Russia will not be able to launch an effective offensive.

    It would be nice if Ukraine could reach out and hit SU-34's at altitude 50 miles back before they deploy those glide bombs. Russia can still afford Jet Fuel and Glide Bomb Kits. But what it would have trouble replacing is the Jets and the crews to fly them.
    They use to move a Patriot battery around at night near Donbas trying to hit Russian aviation over the Sea of Azov and it worked for a couple of weeks. But loose one Patriot Battery and everyone's freaking out. They cost the equivalent of tens of Bradley IFV's or maybe a hundred of those M777 field cannon.
    The cost of supplying Patriot missiles to Ukraine is approximately $1.1 billion. This includes $400 million for the system itself and $690 million for the missiles1. The U.S. Army operates 15 Patriot battalions,
    Depending on the variant and contract, the M777 ranges in the 2-3 Million dollar price. Which is why I wanted Biden to be sending the M777 and the M101 Howitzers way back in 2021 but he was too busy packing up and leaving Afghanistan. Those cheaper and technically much more easy to operate and move around the battle field plus to arm would have meant that Ukraine would have had a very big artillery force by end of 2021 for the cost of ONE Patriot battery with missiles. I was also dreaming of the M142 mobile artillery with the longer range ATACMS being in Ukraine in 2021 too. Just that kind of reach and mobility would have been a great kind of layered artillery force that would have made Russia more vulnerable.
    But let's face it Biden is no Military General. He's a lawyer. I always say, you can't win wars fighting with Lawyers. Maybe that's it. Biden is not trying to win anything. He's just hoping Putin will stop, or the Europeans will be stronger. But except for the French, British, Poles and the Baltics and Romania too, much of Europe is just trying to adapt to the new business environment without cheap Russian gas.

    • @RichardTaylor1630
      @RichardTaylor1630 Před 13 dny

      Excellent comment, but Biden was not even an effective lawyer. He practiced law only for a couple of years, switching from a corporate law firm to a stint as public defender. He ran for the Senate in 1972 when he was 29, and won, mostly on good looks and charm against an incumbent more than twice his age. For the next 52 years - professional politician and hustler.

    The lies will catch up to you. We all know Russia can produce a couple hundred tanks a month. Some newly manufactured the rest rebuilds of existing tanks. Ukraine is completely reliant on the west for armor. They received 31 abrams, 14 challengers and abou 80 leos 2. Many of these were destroyed in the last summer offensive. The leo 1s promised need complete rebuilds which wasn't done before handing some to Ukraine. That has delayed the delivery date for the majority of the leo 1s. Captured tanks make up the bulk of their forces now but that number is dwindling since Russia isn't using tanks in the numbers it once did at the beginning of the war. Tanks are now outdated on the Ukraine battlefield because of drones.
