  • Ian reviews the Skindog Ova Surfboard: www.boardshop.co.uk/surfboard...
The Skindog Ova mid length surfboard looks bloody amazing and surfs even better. Everyone knows about Ben Skinner AKA Skindog, unbelievably good surfer, really sound bloke and a definite eye for board design that is both functional and great to behold. We've been talking to Ben about a mid length with a difference and finally here it is, Ladies & Gentlemen...The Ova.
The modern Mid Length surfboard has to tick lots of boxes to satisfy the demanding modern surfer and rest assured the Ova does that. It has paddle power in spades to make sure you get your wave count in the crazy line ups we have today, flow and glide and down the line speed, and maybe most importantly the ability to get it turning from the middle of the board.
The design features have been well worked out as you would expect, there is a hull entry up from that rolls into a single then double concave and vee through the tail. this translates into early wave entry and quick acceleration. The rails are a 50/50 set up like a Flatracker running from the nose that blend into a harder edge mid way through the board, hence the ability to get it turning without having to be right over the fins. The board feels solid too, not heavy but well balanced, 6/4oz deck glassing means its got some longevity too.
The Ova mid length needs a 7" single and the outer fins from a medium thruster set to get the most out of it, obviously adjust for your weight or board size but for 6 10s to 7 2s this set up is ideal.
If we don't have the Skindog Ova surfboard you're looking for, or the stock dims don't work for you, just give us a ring on (44) 01243 674250 or email info@boardshop.co.uk and we'll happily discuss a custom order for you. We're also happy to consider taking your old or unwanted board as a trade-in against a new board! We're super stoked to be able to offer boards from one of the UKs best board builders.

Hey board shop - are you ever planning on getting some Morning of the Earth boards?

How does this compare to the outlier?

Very different boards. The outlier is a hull based mid length with a differeent DNA. You would have them together rather than one over the other.

Could you compare to the Moe?

      Wave range - OVA 8/10 - MOE 7.75/10
Both can go in a knee high wave. The OVA can handle a bigger wave with more ease but in the 1ft to 3ft range they are equal.
      Paddling
Both score 9.5/10 - These are two of the best paddlers out there!
      Wave entry
      OVA 9/10 - MOE 9.5/10
The Moe does have a very slightly easier and faster wave entry. As the scores show it is close.
      Speed - OVA 9/10 - MOE 8.5/10
The OVA is fast and fun. The Moe is still quick but a bit more controlled.
      Performance - OVA 8.5/10 - MOE 9/10
The Moe is great for performance. A board that paddles as fast and easy usually means performance is lost but this is not the case. The OVA is still easy and has performance but the Moe wins this one.
User friendly - 9/10 for both.
They are both really easy to surf!
