BEST "Performance" Mid Length - Thunderbolt Harley Ingleby Mid6 Tolhurst Surfboard Review

  • Pulling in several attributes of a performance shortboard into a mid length, the Mid6 is likely the best performance mid length available. Features like the performance entry rocker, pulled in pin tail, 6 channels bottom, and a 5 fin configuration allows you to ride it as a thruster or quad or maybe even a 2+1, it's basically a longer shortboard made for bigger steeper waves.
Watch ‪@harleyingleby‬ and Kevin Schultz ‪@firewiresurfboards‬ just tear up waves, it's rather impressive.

Had this board for a long while now & its a weapon. I'm 64 & basically surfed my entire life on boards just like this.
You have to get right back on the tail. You'll know it's the right spot because this board will go vertical & or drive.....fast.
As for the hold.... when you're in a situation where you feel like things aren't going well or your not going to make it go full banzai, engage the rail & next thing it's "poof" you're out & thinking how the fuck did that just happen!!!!! It truly is the magic stick.
I've got a heap of boards but my 2 faithful travellers are the mid 6 & the seaside & beyond..... both 7'.
    For me, the perfect quiver.

Had my 7'0 mid 6 for about a year and love it in good surf. I am 6'4" and 185lbs, so it is definitely a short board for me. I agree with everything you said about the board. I like it so much that I am thinking about getting a 7'10" mid 6 as well (partly because I am a few months off turning 70 and I thought it would help with my wave count on more crowded days🤣). Keep up the great reviews.

I dig this board so much, I got it in the 7'0" and 7'6". The rocker, rails, outline, and contours work well in beach break, which I surf 99% of the time. I use the 7'0" as a daily driver. I use the 7'6" when I need extra paddle power.

Interesting comment about where you're standing. I had exactly the same revelation! At first I had the pad right back like you would on a thruster.
I torn the pad off and moved it forward. Now i have it placed so the kick is right on the trailing edges of my quad set. Now, i can just jam my foot in there when it's time to turn. I no longer have that inch or more of wondering where my foot is.
When i had the pad right on the tail, my rail game suffered because I would often be standing far behind the quads.
I've never had much success standing behind all my fins.

Harley rides all lengths boards so whatever he rides he just looks natural on all he's probably just on 6 foot id say . Only going by seeing him in the surf.

Great video! Love seeing the barrels and performance turns, especially for a mid length. Wondering how it compares to Moe, Sunday, Seaside and Beyond, etc.? The 7’0” seems like pretty nice compromise in terms of performance, paddling power and still could duck dive when needed. Mid lengths are a pretty diverse category, but a lot of them seem geared more to shorter longboard than slightly bigger high performance shortboard.

Always enjoy your content. Keep up the good work. The Mid 6 is up there when looking at the performance end of the scale for mid lengths but its Achilles heel in steeper drops is the wide nose. So far the pinnacle for me after riding a plethora of mid lengths (including all the boards you mentioned) over the last 20 years is the Lost crowd killer. It's firmly on the shortboard end of the spectrum for better waves. Since Firewire and Thunderbolt have parted ways supply of the Mid 6 will be drying up. One thing prospective buyers should be made aware of is that they have a Thunderbolt logo with tiny writing on it that shows its country of manufacture as China. Considering they are premium priced boards this is a bummer.

Man, I'm so stoked to see you finally got a hold of the Mid6. I really love mine but you touched on a couple of things I totally agree with. I'm 5"11 and 170lbs. I have the 7'0 and I wish I would've gotten the 7'6 or even the 7'10. I like riding a board I have to man handle and the 7'0 is right at my minimum. I love the way the board rides and surfs. Very responsive and it reminds me of my old short board 6'4. Which is why I'd prefer the bigger of the 3. The board is spoon shaped which doesn't much matter I find when the waves are pumping and has power. When it gets small and week, you really got to get up on the nose to get the spoon nose to engage to catch waves. This living in Florida was a struggle for me. Something I'm not use to but once you figure that out, the only limitations to this board is your imagination..I find with the quad set up it's more forgiving with back foot placement but as a thruster you really need to be on the tail. The thruster comes in handy when it's big and pumping to give it more stability and drive. I find tho I keep going back to the quad. So stoked you reviewed this board. I don't know if it's the board or your surfing has improved but you're fuckin rippin man!! I think the more you play with it the less your back foot movements will become less of an issue. Great video Thome. Thank you very much. 🤙

I don't ride midlengths Bec they're user friendly. I ride them Bec the new short boards are like Skimboards with fins. I compare them and midlengths to bass boats and cigarette boats. The planing surface on these new short boards is very small. They fit Pros and skateboarders very well. But someone like me, that doesn't really surf that way, I'm almost forced to ride a midlength. My legs are strong and I push right through the small boards. They feel like I need 1 for each foot. This HI Mid6 gives me the best of both worlds. Everyone should be careful they're not getting caught up in trends. Find what works for you.

Thanks, I really appreciate the in-depth comment. I saw Harley surfing the 7'10 and as usual, he was killing it. I DMed Harley and he said that next year they're coming out with something and the way he was talking makes me feel it's going to be something a little shorter. Good for me at my height and weight. I didn't talk about the construction much if at all, lol. But I do like the fender bolt. It looks like something that would last for a very long time. I definitely may have to get my own mid-6 at this point.

I bought the 7’4” HI Moe last December in Puerto Rico , cause I buckled my 7’10” CI Tuff Lite Water Hog. I have the FCS2 large reactor quad fin set up . Very loose , feels skaty at times cause of the wider tail and flat rocker. Taking it back to PR next week. Now after seeing this video on the mid 6 , this shape and rocker profile is better suited if waves become steep and bigger. I am really happy with the thunderbolt technology! great question. my S&B is 6'8 and 38L. It paddles well. The Mid6 was 7' and 40L. comparing them both, even though the S&B is 2L less, it felt like it paddled better. Not by much but barely and a lot likely has to do with where the wide point is and how much flatter it is in rocker. as for surfing, two different feels. the Mid6 is performance while the S&B is nice flowy carves and flow. really drawn out turns. Hard to say exactly since I surfed them in different conditions but in general the above is my opinion

different. The Mid6 is a legit step up. The type of board you would take out in double overhead waves. With the rocker, it can handle really hollow waves. The S&B work better in bigger softer waves. not so great in punchy conditions. I would not put them in the same category of boards so not sure I could choose one. I checked it out, online pics that is and it looks pretty sweet. doesn't seem like something that i'll find easily unless I order it. zero surf funds at the moment, been putting away for the GWT (Great White Twin), not sure it is a real board yet but supposed to release in November. Also have some family vacations lined up that completely drained me. But you think that twin over the plasmic or twinsman?

I've made my case with Harley. I sent him a message. Although it doesn't seem like they plan on doing anything with that, he did mention they have some really cool things happening next year. I saw a promo video that looked like there was a smaller board, a new model, in the works. :) fingers crossed.

@@ThomyeSurfs I’m sure you’ve seen Harley’s new Mid 6 mini and Moe mini… all the smaller lengths and liters you wished for (and even smaller) (and great two reviews btw)… SO, now the question to you is that you get to pick one Mid 6 mini (6.4 or 6.8) and one Moe mini (6.6 or 6.10), what dims you picking? or would stay with 7.0 and 7.2 respectively? interestingly the 6.8 Mid 6 mini is 1L less than the 7.0, but adding a 1/16 of thickness-worthy tradeoff IMO. Honestly, I want to sell my 7.0 and 7.2 and get all four of the mini dims for different conditions 😂. I’m 5.10, and like you, always wanted smaller dims, but now I have too many choices!

@@rjcplus9 Most definitely getting the 6'4 and 6'6 respectively. I do like how he kept a bulk of the volume. I was doing the math and thought they might not have enough volume if he kept the proportions. I told my wife, that it was only fair that I get both since I reviewed their older brothers. Can't ignore the little siblings. :) She rolled her eyes at me.

I tried to demo a few times, but every day I got my hands on the board, the surf didn't cooperate. From what few waves I could tell, it reminds me of the Dominator (original round tail). Still open to review it once I get through some of my other loaner boards.

I'm looking for a new performance mid. Do you have any advice for me? i'm looking at the mid 6, CI mid, Ci m23 and Ci mid twin

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 7 měsíci

For straight performance I would say the mid-6. Just the thin set up alone although the m23 is likely very similar. See I mid and the CI twin I think are in a different category. The CI mid is a great retro cruiser fun carvey board but not high performance. But it also depends on what you define as performance. The twin is probably more performance but it's still a twin so a different feel all together

I haven't tried the midstrength yet. But off the top of my head, it's a smaller package. I will have to investigate.
